story behind this dazzling hollywood light show a busy monday ahead as "early today" starts right now. good to be with you on this morning. i'm frances rivera >> and i'm phillip mena. we begin with breaking news from new zealand. at least five people have died after a volcano erupted on white island, a popular tourist destination about 30 miles offshore about 50 people were in the area, and 23 have been transported to shore most have burn injuries. emergency crews are unable to reach the island right now and there is a possibility of more eruptions royal caribbea nbc news that they had guests touring the island today but they didn't share any additional details about the status of their passengers the stage is set for a historic showdown in washington as congress forges ahead with impeachment hearings ed to members of the intelligence committee will testify before the judiciary about their findings on whether president trump tried to pressure ukraine into investigating hians will then it's up to the judiciary each present their side. members to take the next steps

meanwhile the white house confirmed that it will not participate in any upcoming hearings calling the inquiry, quote, completely basis. nbc's tracie potts joins us. >> reporter: this is a process, and we continue to say this is a significant idea well, this one is because it's essentially final arguments before the judiciary committee with members of the intelligence committee breaking down their report what they found in the evidence, in the witnesses and then they could actually start writing articles of impeachment on that judiciary committee today. chairman nadler says he expects that it's probable that those articles will be completed this week and that the focus here is about protecting the next presidential election. >> this is a matter of urgency to deal with because we have to make sure that the next election is conducted with integrity and without foreign interference >> it's going to go nowhere.

and i think the american people know this is a waste of time >> reporter: meantime, the president's personal attorney rudy giuliani just back from ukrainpected to deliver some sort of statement or report e t sa findings there. frances? >> all right, tracie potts for us thank you. the fbi is expanding their investigation into the deadly shooting at the naval air station that left three people dead federal investigators say they are moving forward as if the shooting was an act of terror. they say the shooter mohammed alshamrani was a second lieutenant in the royal saudi air force and that he legally bought the gun he used in his shooting rampage we have also learned the gunman traveled to new york with some students >> reporter: well, the fbi still has a long investigation ahead they want to question any associates of alshamrani and they are asking anyone who has information to come forward. meanwhile people here in florida

are beginning to say good-bye. as pensacola gives salute to its fallen sailors, more questions are swirling about the shooter, 21 saudi national alshamrani >> our main goal right now is to confirm whether he acted alone or was he a part of a larger network. >> reporter: while officials have yet to determine the motive, they are investigating it as an act of terrorism. alshamrani who was killed in a shootout with deputies walked into this building with a glock 9-millimeter handgun and was the only gunman. investigators say there have been no arrests in the case. but law enforcement sources tell nbc in the week leading up to the shooting alshamrani showed three fellow classmates videos of previous mass shootings over dinner >> do you believe that anybody knew about this attack beforehand >> i am not prepared as we continue to investigate. there are several students who are providing information.
