well, guys, this is big. last night the january 6th commission revealed that during the capitol riots, the white house chief of staff got texts pleading for trump to calm things down from fox news anchors and donald trump jr. yeah trump ignored the advice of the closest to him and also don jr [ laughter ] trump was like, "if i replied to every text that said 'what you're doing is crazy,' i'd never get anything done. [ laughter ] yeah, it came out that fox news hosts were begging for trump do something. and today's fox news hosts lit tree on fire again just to change the subject [ laughter ] trump didn't want to hear it not only did trump ignore texts from the fox news, he also dropped them from his family cell phone plan. [ laughter ] that's right, white house chief of staff mark meadows was getting texts during the attack asking trump to intervene. for example, sean hannity texted, and this is real, "can he make a statement ask people to leave the capital?" yep, that's not all meadows

received several other messages that day, too for example, eric trump texted, "head stuck in capital staircase railing. send help! [ laughter ] next text, rudy guiliani, texted, "just showed up at capitol total landscaping. when's the rioting start?" [ laughter ] and finally president trump texted meadows, "just make sure they don't take away my twitter! [ laughter and applause crazy day all around crazy day all around some more news from washington the white house just announced their plan to add 500,000 charging stations for electric vehicles across the country. it's incredible. somehow, we can build half a a million charging stations, but we can't add a second outlet at la guardia [ laughter ] can i charge my phone? i just -- okay did you guys hear this today, the state of new york ordered former governor andrew cuomo to return the five million dollars he received from his book on leadership during the pandemic.

i think it's safe to say the drinking at the cuomo family christmas has already begun. [ laughter ] some business news after announcing their name change, facebook paid a bank in south dakota $60 million for the rights to their new name, "meta. it's making emotional because seeing a bank get $60 million is what christmas is all about [ laughter ] [ applause ] that's right, a bank now they're so rich, they don't even chain their pens to the table anymore. [ laughter ] "just take them! that's a montblanc just take it." i like how facebook was trying to rename their company something cool, but it was already being used by a bank in south dakota [ laughter ] well, this is encouraging. i read that despite supply chain issues, ups and the postal service have improved their on time deliveries compared to last year's holiday season that's right they now deliver that slip that says, "sorry we missed you right on time.

[ cheers and applause >> jimmy: it was so honest and it was so -- it -- i loved it. i told you as soon as i read it, i couldn't stop reading it i go, "oh, this is so -- it's so personal, but it's so also universal. >> yeah. i think that's what people got from it. people said, "hey, i see myself in you i see my stories in your stories. it kind of, lays out a map, a process. it's a process book. it is not a product book it's an approach to life with this rodeo we're all trying to get through. >> jimmy: yeah >> and trying to get our eight seconds on >> jimmy: yeah "greenlights" -- >> how can we -- how can we do our best to get it >> jimmy: you -- actually, you're -- you're coming out with a -- a journal now. >> yeah. >> jimmy: a companion journal to help people because i -- i think you were saying in the book, too. it's -- it's tough when you write -- to just tell someone, "hey, just write something down every -- every day or every night. >> a blank sheet of pape -- paper intimidates the heck out of us, right >> jimmy: yeah >> but journaling or writing things down, i've done it all my life, and it's how i wrote "greenlights," the book. immensely valuable i mean, i write things down to forget you write them down, you can forget them because they're in there.

[ laughter ] don't just go to the diary or the journal to write down when your frustrated and confused go to the journal to write down what you're doing in life when you're rolling, when you're catching green lights when you're in the flow because we will get out of flow again and it's nice to have a document to back and go, "whew! what was i doing when i was -- when i was cruising? >> jimmy: yeah, when life was perfect. >> you know, you see habits and you can change and recalibrate but yeah, it's a journal i got little nudges along the way to, kind of, help you and ask you some questions to write your story. >> jimmy: yeah >> the book of "greenlights" was my story this is for your story >> jimmy: yeah, i love that, buddy. that's awesome - [ cheers and applause congrats on that >> thank you >> jimmy: we also -- you were nice enough to zoom into us when we couldn't get any guests anywhere no one was allowed to travel or do anything. but there was talk of you, maybe, running for governor of texas. >> right >> jimmy: and you recently decided to not run for governor >> yeah. >> jimmy: can you walk us through that decision? >> whew! well, it was a two-year consideration that i came to the decision really over the last couple of months.

and i was asking myself the original question and trying to answer, "how and where and what can i do to be most useful to myself, to my family, and to the most amount of people? politics came up and it's a privileged one that i gave great consideration to. but at this point in my life -- with the things, i've got a 13-year-old, an 11-year-old, an 8-year-old. the life i'm living right now, the storytelling i want to keep doing. it's not the category for me at this point in my life. >> jimmy: it's still not ruling out future >> i'm not until i am. >> jimmy: okay >> someone told me that was a very mcconaughey answer the other day. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: "i'm not until i am. it's very -- yeah. yeah, that is. >> i'll -- i'll be keeping an eye open for -- >> jimmy: because i know -- you know, texas loves you. and when we -- when we did the show from texas, you were nice enough to come on the show and, gosh, you're beloved down there as well. you think people love you here, standing ovations, they love you there. >> it's a great state. >> jimmy: i know you put on a benefit concert. >> yeah. >> jimmy: with your wife called "we're texas." >> yeah. >> jimmy: after that rough, awful winter storm >> winter storm uri came through.

we're not used to winter storms like that in texas, okay >> jimmy: no >> we -- we were a bit awkward we weren't prepared and a lot of people were out of home a lot of people were out of school a lot of people needed some help because they didn't -- they didn't know how to deal with it. and so, we -- my foundation, which is the just keeping livin foundation, we got together and said, "we're not disaster relief, but want to be disaster relief?" we said, "let's go." and i headed to texas. i got on the phone camila got on the phone. 100% of the people we called, whether it was companies who donated, whether it was musicians who came in, everybody was a "yes." and the fie show on and we raised over $7.7 million rit there. you just stepped up and i go, "oh, my gosh what do you know about putting on a live concert? you're like, "nothing. >> it was, like, two takes today. you get -- no, you get one take you know, two maximum, and let's throw it together because you have to -- disaster relief, you have to move quickly because if you take your time to say, "oh, this has got to be perfect," something else is taking the front page news there is another disaster

coming you know so you need -- you need to jump on it quickly and get everyone together and take advantage of trying to get people to give at that time when it is front page news and they know people need help >> jimmy: i saw "hollywood reporter" gave you -- named you philanthropist of the year >> yeah. story that toad in the first -- one of the first scenes he's riding his vespa and he crashes and he doesn't break. he doesn't break character he doesn't go like, "oh, sorry guys." and paul made it clear like "you guys can never break. it's like, "you've never done this before. just never break." and so i take that as like gospel like, i'm like, "oh, the rules of acting. number one, don't break. >> jimmy: wow. [ light laughter ] >> number two, i don't know yet. those were the rules and so i'm in this truck it's the time and i'm so nervous. and we start driving and i don't know what happened i mean, again, bad driver. i must have done something to make a popping noise there was just a pop but i didn't think anything of it and then, all of a sudden, from the corner of the cab that we -- that, you know, in the truck, it started filling with smoke.
