yeah, i bet it does. the good old days when you were just going out for ice cream and riding shotgun on the hope and change express [ laughter ] sucks when the responsibility is all yours, doesn't it? turns out there's a world of difference between taking an uber and driving an uber [ laughter ] president biden is set to sign a bill today that will increase the financial stability and reliability of the u.s. postal service. the bill is called the "pottery barn act of 2022. [ laughter ] ivanka trump reportedly met, yesterday, with the house committee investigating the january attack on the capitol, for nearly eight hours. oh, my god, you guys she did it she worked an eight-hour day [ laughter and applause i knew she could i knew she could a man on a southwest airlines flight was arrested over the weekend after he was allegedly caught masturbating on board he was caught after passengers heard clapping before the plane landed [ laughter ]

according to the latest numbers, the second season of the netflix series, "bridgerton," was watched for more than 250 million hours over the last week, which is a record for the most viewed english language show even though most people watched it on mute [ laughter ] and finally, today was national walking day. this news first reported by a sign in the subway and that was a monologue, everybody. [ cheers and applause we have a great show for you tonight. she's a talented actress you know from "21 bridges" and "factory girl. currently she's starring in "anatomy of a scandal," which begins streaming april 15th on netflix. sienna miller is here. so happy to have her back. and her album, "high," is out this friday. caitlyn smith is back on the show to perform for us [ cheers and applause it's going to be a great show. but before we get to all that, we got yet another disturbing glimpse of where the gop is headed this week, when donald trump endorsed sarah palin for a seat in congress and matt gaetz accused the military of focusing too much on wokeism. meanwhile, president biden proposed a new billionaire tax aimed at reining in america's massive wealth gap for more on this, it's time for "a closer look." ♪ [ cheers and applause >> seth: there is obviously a lot going on in the news this week trump's slow moving coup is continuing apace the u.s. and its allies announced new sanctions on russia's barbarism in ukraine. a new report says it's now or never to avert irreversible climate catastrophe. there's a new variant of a highly contagious respiratory virus swirling around out there. and on top of all that-- >> former alaska governor and one-time republican vice presidential nominee, sarah palin, announced that she's running for congress

former president donald trump has already endorsed her >> when you get there, assuming you get there, you understand that the media jackals are going to descend on you, and you're going to be walking down the halls to the cafeteria to go get a pepsi, and you're just going to be swarmed by these reporters sticking these little microphones and recording devices in your face governor palin -- palin congresswoman, are you prepared for that onslaught because it's going to be pretty vicious. >> you know, i would never be so cocky as to say, "bring it on. [ laughter ] but, yes, i anticipate that when i walk down that hall to get my diet dr pepper, sure [ light laughter ] the jackals are gonna be there doing their jackalin'. [ light laughter ] >> seth: so, if you've ever stood in front of a coke machine and wondered what kind of lunatic drinks diet dr pepper. [ laughter ] but, yes yes. jackals -- jackals will do their jackalin'. [ laughter ] and by the way, if you want to know what a jackal does, i'm the guy to ask

[ laughter ] it should be noted, i think palin is in for a rude awakening if she thinks she's still in the vanguard of wild and crazy republicans. palin showing up in congress now would be like me telling a bunch of high school kids about my wild days of sneaking out and drinking wine coolers in the woods, and then realizing i was talking to the kids from "euphoria. they'd be like, "cool, old man i put molly on my oatmeal. [ laughter ] in fact, as if to prove that sarah palin somehow would not be the craziest republican in congress if she won, florida congressman matt gaetz, who looks like he wished on a monkey's paw he'd make it in major league baseball and instead got mr. mets head -- [ laughter ] -- leveled a bunch of unhinged conspiracy theories at defense

secretary lloyd austin, yesterday, claiming the military cares more about critical race theory and wokeism than national defense. >> what in the $773 billion that you're requesting today is going to help you make assessments that are accurate in the face of so many blown calls? [ light laughter ] >> you've -- you've seen what's in our budget. you've seen how the budget matches the strategy and so i'll let that speak for itself >> everyone else in the world seems to be developing capabilities and being more strategic. we got time to embrace critical race theory at west point, to embrace socialism at the national defense university, to do mandatory pronoun training. do you assess- >> you know, it's -- again, this is the most capable, the most combat critical force in the world. it has been and it will be so going forward. and this budget helps us to do that >> not if we continue down this path not if we embrace socialism. you guys said that that russia would overrun ukraine in 36 days. you said that the taliban would be kept at bay for months.

you totally blew those calls and maybe we would be better at them if the national defense university actually worked a little more on strategy and a little less on wokeism >> has it occurred to you that russia has not overrun ukraine because of what we've done and our allies have done >> it seems the biden administration is trying to destroy our military by force feeding it wokeism >> seth: what is wrong with these people in their fevered swamp brains, do they genuinely believe our soldiers no longer know how to fire a rifle because they are buried in homework from pronoun class? does he think they arrive on the battlefield and the sergeant barks out, "all right, bravo team, go around the left flank and tell the enemy they're beautiful just the way they are. [ light laughter ] charlie team, circle those drums. the rest of you, into the prius. [ laughter ] also, i would just like to point out, i have no problem with tough questioning of our national security officials. and i'm all for cutting the defense budget it's massively inflated, and we can absolutely spend it better elsewhere. but that's not even what the scam artists, like gaetz, are asking for they just want to whine about wokeism and critical race theory they don't actually want to cut defense spending as gaetz made clear in this part

of the exchange where he claimed we were behind on a certain type of defense technology without providing much proof >> we're behind in hypersonics we failed to deter russia. last year, china flew more - >> so what do you mean we're behind in hypersonics? how do you -- how do you - >> okay, who's ahead in hypersonics? >> how do you -- how do you -- how do you make that assessment? >> i don't know. >> is it a one for one >> i make that assessment because china is fielding -- >> is it a one for one standard of developing hypersonics? >> -- hypersonic weapons systems and we are still developing them >> seth: "how do you know we're behind in hypersonics? "i don't know. "do you know what hypersonic is?" "i know that according to sarah palin, they do a lot of hypersonicin'. [ laughter ] these people, trump, palin, gaetz, marjorie taylor greene, are very much the present and the future of the republican party, which is terrifying for many reasons. for one thing, they all try to pass themselves off as pro-worker populists, while the left is actually going after elite wealth and trying to redistribute that money to better uses that would benefit poor and working americans for example, the biden administration is proposing a new minimum tax on billionaires. >> today, the biden administration expected to announce a new tax for billionaires the minimum income tax would

require households with more than $100 million to pay a rate of at least 20% of their full income >> a 20% minimum tax it applies only to the top 100th of 1%. 100th of 1% of the americans will pay this tax. i'm asking you one simple -- just pay your fair share pay your fair share, that's all. that's it. just your fair share and no one can argue that 20% for a billionaire is unfair. >> seth: i love when biden stares down the barrel of the camera and goes into his whisper voice. it feels like your future self time traveled here to warn you about something. [ light laughter ] "i'm telling you, you got to dump all your peloton stock. [ laughter ] and go get that mole looked at." now, i haven't spoken to any myself, but i can't imagine billionaires are happy about this >> damn right, we're not >> seth: what? wally, you're a billionaire? how? >> seth, 20 years ago i was visited by my future self and he told me to buy amazon stock. >> seth: why didn't you tell me?

[ light laughter ] i told me you'd say that [ laughter ] >> seth: all right anyway, billionaires and their allies in congress get so emotionally wounded. at even the suggestion that maybe our tax system favors the wealthy, like during biden's state of the union when he said trump's $2 trillion tax cuts largely benefited the top 1% which is true. and republicans audibly booed, leading to an awkward moment where chuck schumer preemptively stood up to clap the next line but was interrupted by the republican booing. >> unlike the $2 trillion tax cut passed in the previous administration, that benefited the top 1% of americans. the american rescue plan-- [ booing ] the american rescue plan helped working people and left no one behind

includes a wealth tax for the richest people in the country. households with assets of more than $100 million would face a minimum tax of 20% so here to discuss is mick mulvaney. he's a former office of management and budget director and today i am pleased to welcome him as a cbs news contributor. so happy to have you here. thank you so much. you're the guy to ask about this >> seth: no, he's not. he's donald trump's former chief of staff he's not just some budget wonk who's giving nonpartisan advice. calling him a former office of management and budget director and leaving out the trump part is like saying, "there were a lot of jokes at the oscars that will smith did like. >> seth: absolutely. i mean, he looks -- he looks too good to be trusted >> yes yes, exactly >> seth: so you -- this is based on a book. had you read the book? >> i did not read the book >> seth: okay. >> i read the book after i'd read the six scripts, which were so compelling. >> seth: okay. >> and then, you know, that thing of an actor where you have to really do the research. all of that was done for me in the book >> seth: that's very nice. yes. >> like, all of the thoughts -- it was great it's a brilliant book. >> seth: and do you usually read a thriller like that is that a kind of book you turn to >> i love them, and i will take them on a holiday, but i always get guilt that i haven't read the classics, so i kind of punish myself with my reading. like, "why am i not reading 'hardy' that i have not read --" >> seth: got it. >> -- "instead of this really compelling addictive?" >> seth: this is very noble. so you're still -- you're still doing -- >> i mean, it takes me like ten years -- i've just finished "war and peace" like eight - >> seth: you did "war and peace"? >> i did it. >> seth: all right so this is fascinating to me, because i -- so i read "war and peace. >> don't ask me what happened. >> seth: okay, i won't >> i understood three words. but, yes, i read it. >> seth: so, but that's what i was gonna say. i read it in college, but it was a -- the whole course was war and peace. >> yeah. >> seth: so we had a professor that, sort of, held our hand through all of it. >> yes >> seth: and i would say, like, it was a great -- like having someone walk you through it, i'm like, "this is really great. >> yeah. >> seth: but i would also say, one, i don't remember anything that happened. [ laughter ]

and i can't imagine doing it alone on your own. so that's very impressive. >> it was -- you know, it was good it started in lockdown, it ended recently >> seth: okay. >> it's a long book. >> seth: it's a very long book >> but my god, that tolstoy can write a book >> seth: oh, you know what if you take anything away from this interview, "that tolstoy can write a book." [ laughter ] >> yeah. he's good with words >> seth: he's not too shabby it's a shame what happened to him is he still working? >> i don't know. i don't think so >> seth: i don't think so. that's hollywood for you they just -- they find the hot new thing, and they just move on [ laughter ] and you've got to -- this was a lockdown show as well, so you -- >> yes i got to leave - >> seth: yes >> -- the lockdown to go to work which -- which was really, really lucky >> seth: yeah. and you got to be in london as well, or i guess in england. it was -- did you shoot in london >> we shot atshepperton studios, which is outside of london and around london. >> seth: okay, great >> a bit of manchester it was great i was so ready to be around family and home. and i'd done the first bit in new york, which was intense. [ laughter ] so i was just ready to go back so we had this year. >> seth: and so were you in actual, sort of, courthouses, or were they courthouse sets? >> they were sets because of covid.

>> seth: yeah. >> they had to rebuild the old bailey and places like that, which they did perfectly like we have this incredible house. it was all a set i wanted to just, like, forklift it somewhere else, and live in it forever because it was so nice >> seth: did you -- i mean, the old bailey always, you know, it seems so historic. was that something when you grew up in london, did you, like, go there on field trips is that like a thing you do as a young -- >> nope. no no >> seth: no? >> we'd go to like the farm or - [ laughter ] you know, i wish we did. >> seth: yeah. >> you can actually go and sit it on real trials, which i've always - i've meant to do, but it's one of those things that i've never done >> seth: yeah. well you're too busy reading tolstoy. and, you know, you try to figure it out, and it's really fun and exciting it's like the best group of -- of people. like, i understand everyone's sincere goodbyes at the end of "snl." like, people are like, "oh, it's like the best week of my life. and you're like, "oh, i get it." it's like a lot of, like, incredible professionals and, like, brilliant writers and excellent cast, and it was a beautiful experience i'm happy i got to do it >> seth: yeah, and everybody -- you know, the goal is to take care of you, the host, and it's really - >> yeah. >> seth: you're like, it's a -- even when i went back, i'm like, "oh, this is really lovely everybody is thinking way more about me now than when i worked here." [ laughter ] >> yeah, that's nice yeah yeah, that is nice it's what i imagine, like the, you know, the first week of, like, foster care feels like [ laughter ] it's all, like, you know, spaghetti -- [ laughter ] >> seth: but it's fast, right? so you don't have a lot of time to think about "snl," but you do have a lot of time to think about a special. >> yeah. >> seth: and this is such a brilliant special.

>> thank you thank you. >> seth: and it's obviously so personal and i want to ask, because you've done specials before and you're going to do this one, what are the -- because, you know, the headline of the special is you come out as gay in this special. >> yeah. >> seth: and what is the -- when you embark on this special, what is the decision-making process to be like, "this is what this one's going to be about" >> i couldn't think of anything else i mean, that was like -- [ laughter ] i'm so gay, i just couldn't -- [ laughter ] like, what else? no, don't -- but i -- i actually - [ cheers and applause oh, thank you very - thank you very much. i have to -- i keep saying i'm gay in new york and people keep clapping [ laughter ] and it was so nice >> seth: yeah. >> but it's like, all right. >> seth: yeah, because you've been -- do you realize, you're like, "oh, you can't bank it when you go somewhere else"? [ light laughter ] >> yeah, yeah, yeah. y'all are just building me up, and i can't -- like, life doesn't work like that for the rest of it

it's very kind i'm learning how to receive love, and i actually need that i joke about it because it's a -- it's a thing i'm learning now, like, in life as a man. and it's definitely -- i need it to, like, supplement -- i think there's kind of a little bit of a rift with me and my family, and like, you know, that kind of core tribe so, like, i've been receiving love from strangers -- sexually and non-sexually [ laughter ] >> seth: it's nice to have a balance. >> no, but -- but it's been -- it's been -- it's been really nice i had a crazy -- a crazy drive here like a crazy drive here. i talked to my parents for the first time >> seth: oh, now this, i'm fascinated by this, because you talk especially about the fact that, you know, you did not come out to your mom in the special you had come out to her before >> yeah, well, kind of i have to renew it

like, if - [ light laughter ] like, my mom practices a lot of cognitive dissonance with it, and so it's like -- or denial, rather, and so i have to come out like -- like every other conversation [ laughter ] >> seth: so how did the conversation go? >> i don't know. i'm trying to -- what's the television version of it you know, i called in the car. i was nervous. she called today's my birthday, and - >> seth: happy birthday, buddy >> yeah, thank you [ cheers and applause see, that's too much that's already so much >> seth: now, i will notice, that was, like, twice as much applause that they gave you for being gay. >> yeah, yeah, yeah. maybe it's more my birthday than gay i am that's - anyway, i was nervous because it was a lot in the special, a lot of things that i was afraid to say to her and i said it in the special

and so she called, and i was nervous because my mom and my family can be very polite, and we can kind of, like, smile. i don't know if any of your families are like that, but like, just kind of smile through things and not talk about things there's a lot of elephants in the room i think my family lives inside an elephant, actually. [ laughter ] i think the elephant is the room [ light laughter ] and we're great performers [ laughter ] and i was afraid that the call would just be about my birthday, when i feel like there's obviously more pressing matters. and it was an emotional call, and she expressed a lot of love. so did my dad. and they made very strong calls for peace. so, it sounds like news about ukraine. [ laughter ] like, "we just want peace. [ laughter ]

like, that's what -- they're just like praying for peace and, you know - and it was almost very nice. it was very dramatic i was going by billboards of me, like, as the call was going, and like sirens are going off. it was really weird. and it was -- it was almost very nice until, you know, my mom said, like, you know, "i just -- these sins of tearing the family apart. and it just speaks to the -- kind of the core of the problem, you know, that there's this insurmountable mountain that we can't really get over. [ light laughter ] and it was real dramatic and then the driver was like, "all right, it's time to come out. and then i got out of the car, and now i'm here [ laughter ] so that's where i'm at >> seth: yeah. >> what's up with y'all, though? y'all good everybody cool [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause i'm all right. i'm all right. i'm good my bad for bringing this

>> seth: you mentioned about not having -- in the special, the body of the special, about not having sort of had that breakthrough with your mom but you did mention near the end of it, you knew she would watch it >> yeah. >> seth: and i thought that was -- that was a really lovely thing to hear, because obviously it seems like you might feel like some emotional limbo, but you also knew she loved you enough she wasn't going to not watch the special. is that something -- is she always engaged with your work like that as a fan >> yeah, well, that and they're all signed into my hbo max so - >> seth: yeah. [ laughter ] so it's like, "continue watching." >> it was on "up next. [ laughter ] yeah, like, you know, obviously just having a son on television, you know, means -- like, i told her i was getting out of the car to come in here. it's all kind of odd and surreal, because it's playing out like -- she'll watch this. >> seth: yeah. >> you know, this is -- you know, it's all -- you know

>> seth: it's also thematically -- it seemed like the way you approached it was, there was no way to do this special telling half or 75% or 80% of the truth, and not just your own truth, but a lot of -- you know, again, if there's a theme being, like, secrets, there were other secrets about people in your family. how have they responded to that element of it? >> measured slowly i got a really great text from my dad just really saying that he wanted to take responsibility for trauma he caused he apologized for a lot of the chaos. like, "i'm sorry for the chaos." my dad speaks very dramatically. it's nice, though. [ laughter ] and he's responded -- i don't think it's things that he's ever said out loud.

it's odd it's like -- i was -- i think kind of speaking for my family in many ways, just trying to free myself, at least, and hopefully my father. not to sound like odysseus, you know, but -- but, like, just trying to -- yeah yeah, just -- they -- they've responded, like -- it's slowly coming in. it's slowly coming in, i think >> seth: i also was fascinated -- not to ask a process question, but, you know, i often think of stand-up specials as different tracks on an album, whereas this seemed like one piece of music. >> yeah. >> seth: and i was wondering, like, how did you even work it on stage because it almost felt like it always had to be a whole and i should note that, you know, it's an hour, like most specials it went by very quickly for me, even though it was really intense and far weightier than what you expect from a stand-up special. but because it had this real lyric quality, which i think is both a credit to you and bo burnham, who did a beautiful job directing it

>> yeah. >> seth: so how did you ever work on it or was this a piece of comedy that you didn't work as much as maybe previous specials? >> i -- i actually -- it's odd it happened faster than my previous specials, in a way. this happened from december, like right before christmas. i was staying with bo, and i was actually sad because this dude didn't text me back, and so then i threw myself in to work, so, thanks, i guess. >> seth: yeah, yeah, yeah. [ laughter ] >> and just started going up and just talking about things i hadn't talked about before and at first they came out very free associative, but kind of the same rule in my work now that i have in therapy is just like, you know, don't lie. it would be a waste of time. and so it kind of came together quickly. like, the narrative and the arc and the story of it just kind of started making sense as i was saying it. but it happened -- it happened -- i went to various

cities, atlanta and san francisco and austin, and worked it out, and just me alone on stage and audiences kind of everywhere, kind of would chime in and, like, react in a way that i had never felt before as a performer. >> seth: yeah, but there's moments where the audience sort of asks you questions that are very thoughtful. >> yeah. >> seth: so it's like the opposite of heckling, right? >> yeah. >> seth: because they are actually, in a weird way, i felt like, "oh, they're channeling exactly what i'm thinking at this moment," and then you're responding to them did that happen everywhere you did it >> yeah, yeah, yeah. most places, it would be just moments where i would get these thoughtful -- i felt like i was giving the audiences the truth and all of me. there was always this wall i used to kind of present this brash persona as a comic, and

i -- i had to accept how much i needed the audience, like how important it is. like, i'm asking you to share this with me, and i'm sharing more of myself with audiences. and i feel like they responded in kind. and it was beautiful it's been very beautiful and it makes me want to perform more and yeah yeah -- i really - >> seth: well, it is -- it's really something to watch. i also want to say for anybody who hasn't seen yet, the payoff at the end completely caught me off guard. i'm so ashamed that i did not see the last joke coming >> really? >> seth: yeah! i can't believe it >> really? oh, that's nice. >> seth: it made me laugh so hard >> that'll be -- [ laughter ] >> seth: yeah. >> bo -- bo will like that i'll tell him.
