broadcast center. this is abc7 news. >> out of a job. the 49ers star aldon smith was cut after being arrested for dui and vandalism. his fifth arrest since 2011. >> and tonight smith's former teammates are talking about his latest run in with the law. good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> smith was with san francisco for four seasons. he spent much of the time suspended. >> the niners held their regular practice this afternoon. katie was there and is live from levi stadium with the story. >> after practice players told me who ever takes overral done smet's position will have very big shoes to fill.

they are pulling for smith. anquan boldin and bethea say even though he is not a teammate, he is still a friend. >> for me it is not about football. it is making sure he is okay as a person. as a team though we have to move forward. at the end of the day, wish the best for him. >> players deny reports that there was trouble between smith and colin kaepernick off the field. >> i have to ask about the reports he and kaepernick were fighting over a woman. >> i don't know about that. >> i don't know anything about that until you just said it. >> kaepernick said it is not his car smith hit. police arrested the linebacker on thursday night on suspicion of dui, hit-and-run and vandalism. they say he hit a parked car at his apartment complex in santa clara. smith said this on his way out of jail. >> this wasn't a dui. the situation that happened could have been handled differently and i apologize to everybody i let down, and i apologize for how it played out.

as far as everything concerned it will work out how it is supposed to work out. >> in light of his previous problems it seemed he was doing better. >> his attitude, the way he talked, the way he interacted with people, he was making real strides. this is an unfortunate situation. >> they hope the strides can continue. >> he won't be playing football for the san francisco 49ers he will be supported and helped, and he will thought have to walk this path alone. >> smith is already on probation after two previous dui arrests and he could face jail time. he is scheduled to be arraigned. >> abc7 news. >> well, it is an action-packed weekend in san francisco. thousands are going to at&t park to see joel olsteen tomorrow. up to 50,000 are going to fort mason for the jpop summit. the big draw is outside

it turns breezy and cools down to 61 degrees. so really all you need is to pack a jacket or sweatshirt and have a great time. as we look at live doppler 7hd you will see what is setting up. we do have the low clouds starting to move in and pushing in toward the north bay we have the cloud closing in -- the clouds closing in on the coastline. as we head toward tomorrow morning it will start out gray and will it clear for sun? i will be back with a detailed look. dan? >> sandhya, thanks a lot. you can track the weather where you live for your smartphone. it is free on apple's app store or google play. we have more information at the san francisco fire department is reacting after the family of an airline crash victim dropped his lawsuit against the city. he died in the aftermath of the crash two years ago. she was ejected from the plane and covered in firefighting foam and run over by a responding fire truck.

her family isn't talking about the confidential settlement agreement. they released a statement saying i am hopeful the dismissal will bring closure and healing for the members to the events of the flight 214. governor brown has granted parole to a transgender inmate pay for sex assignment surgery. the state is appealing the ruling. it is unclear if norsworthy will still have the prison funded surgery before she is released. a lot of concern on the uc campus understandably after a student was robbed at gunpoint while walking on campus. abc7 news reporter alan wang with what police and school officials are doing about the rise in crime surrounding the campus. >> the campus of uc berkeley offers a certain sense of security. >> yeah, i generally feel that the campus is pretty safe for me to walk around. >> just after midnight this morning, a 20-year-old male

student was robbed at gunpoint while walking down speaker plaza next to hoss pavilion. the two men took his wallet and cell phone. uc berkeley police say armed robberies are not that common on campus, but people have been getting robbed about once a week in the neighborhoods just south and west of campus. >> in the outskirts of berkeley it is more common or coming now on to campus more. >> with the semester about to begin and more students populating the campus, the crimes of opportunity will be on the rise. that's why they are recommending bear walk. bear walk is a free door-to-door night safety service for students. >> you know, these things don't happen that often and it feels like maybe i should talk to bear walk. >> police recommend waking -- walking in groups and putting away electronic devices. thisy are checking to see if

surveillance cameras captured the robbers. on the uc berkeley campus, alan wang, abc7 news. new at 11:00, police in oakland are sorting out a wild crash involving three cars and a building. it happened around 6:30 on macarthur boulevard. there are a couple of sideshow skidmarks in the area, but so far no word on whether this was related to a sideshow. a car was snarled. it was on the connector ramp to the god lupe parkway -- guadeloupe parkway. >> look at this. this car exploded this evening. the picture was posted on instagram with the bay area news group. it happened on seventh avenue in oakland. no word how the saab caught fire. the car obviously destroyed. evacuations have been lifted for most of the 13,000 people forced out of their homes from that massive fire

in lake county. people living in the spring valley area, wilbur springs and morgan valley are now allowed back into their homes. the rocky fire has destroyed 43 homes and 53 other buildings. more than 70,000 acres has burned. it is now 50% contained. crews are hoping for full containment sometime late next week. fire crews rescued injured dog. you can see it here from the rocky fire. the dog was suffering minor burns. the firefighters gave them food and water and waited until animal rescue arrived and took it to a local animal hospital. well, danger over your head. coming up next, glass is raining down on unsuspecting drivers. the new investigation into why sunroofs are exploding. >> and big changes are coming to a pepsi near you. why your next can may taste different. and there is thouing like a father's love -- and there is nothing like a father's love.

unanimous final sentencing. >> jurors in the colorado theater shooting were dismissed after failing to agree on a sentence for gunman james holmes. that was after less than seven hours of deliberations. one of the jurors said there was one lone holdout who did not want the death penalty. >> there was nothing further to discuss at that point. it only takes one. >> the 27-year-old will now spend the rest of his life in prison. >> i think it is outrageous. i still think death is justice for what that guy did. >> that's not justice.

now to an abc news investigation. a danger in your own car. sunroofs shattering without warning. shards of glass raining down on drivers. now a government agency is investigating. here is that story. >> reporter: kate says sunroof spontaneously exploded while waiting at a stop sign jie. it sounded like a gunshot. >> his roof shattered while driving on the highway. >> all of the glass caves in. boom. >> what's going on? >> most sunroofs are made of tempered glass that breaks into smaller, rounded pieces instead of sharp, dangerous shards. spontaneous shattering can happen if there is a manufacturing defect. >> it is an absolute -- in an instant the glass is broke ep. >> they -- this glass is broken. >> it is in the database

start off like with overcast skies pretty socked in along the north bay coast and into the north bay and along most of the coastline right now. the temperatures are in the low to mid60s just about every where except loss dwat toes in the -- los gatos in the upper 50s. do you remember the lightning storm? it was posted on my facebook page yesterday from east san jose, and it is an incredible picture there. some of the storms did drop rain. here is how much we received. salinas, 600. san jose .02. we were fortunate that despite the fact we had dry thunderstorms and dry lightning and the red flag warning we didn't see the fires getting touched off. right now from the exploratorium camera, overcast skies over the financial district fnlt partly to mostly cloudy overnight. mild to warm this weekend and it will be a little cooler early next week. here is a look at the water vapor imagery.

do you remember the system that brought us the thunderstorms? it is long gone. it is taking all of the instability with it. here is what we are setting up for. it is overcast in the morning and then low clouds will linger near the coastline with a nice breeze coming through. typical summertime conditions. sunshine for the inland and bayside communities. we will notice the temperatures will come up around the bay and inland. first thing tomorrow morning if you are doing a walk like ama is or if you have any outdoor plans, it will start off gray and a bit on the cool side. mid50s to low 60s as you head toward the afternoon hours. it was a lovely day and a little warmer tomorrow. 86 in the south bay and 88 gilroy and 81 san jose and 86 los gatos. cupertino and milpitas low 80s. 79 redwood city. 78 in menlo park. san mateo 75. 66 this pacifica with the low clouds lingering it may be a bit cooler at the coast. daly city 66. downtown san francisco 70.
