child. >> and bells ring for the brave passengers who stormed the cockpits on united flight 93 that crashed in pennsylvania. good evening, i'm ann notarangelo. america does not give in to fear. that is how president obama describes the 10-years since the 9/11 attacks. families of the victims gathered at the world trade center new york and got their first look at the memorial marking the spot where thousands died that day. randall pinkston with how the victims were honored. >> reporter: two beams of light illuminate the new york city sky lines, filling the void where the twin towers stood a decade ago. the tribute this light capped off a day of remembrance at the ground zero site, now featuring a memorial to the victims. their families are now able to touch the names of their loved ones. >> our courageous son, wells remi crow they are. >> relatives read all of the

names, 2983 victims. including those who died at the pentagon and in pennsylvania and in new york in 2001 and 1993. >> and my father, sebastian borke, who i never met bees can you say i was in my mom's belly. i love you, father. >> president bush shared a moment by the fountains and comforted family members. there were moments of silence to mark each of the plane crashes and the collapse of each tower. >> god bless every soul that we lost. >> reporter: the public will be able to visit the memorial starting monday. but the 10th anniversary opening reserved for families of the victims marry hen wood lost her son john. >> this particular anniversary has christaized the ten years that we have been mourning john and yet celebrating his life. >> reporter: john's sister ta ra whose birthday is today wore

ribbons marking the 10 years since the tragedy. momentos for those who were lost. randall pinkston, cbs news, new york. military jets scrambled today to escort an american airlines flight to new york city's jfk airport. flight 34 from los angeles landed safely. the reason for the scare, three people locked themselves in a laugh torrey. they were still in there when the jet landed. security officials interviewed passengers at the airport, a law enforcement source says the incident is not believed to be terrorism related. a tense situation at the metropolitan airport as well. they delayed three passengers of a frontier airlines flight after the crew reported suspicious activity on board. again, flight attendants said two people were spending an extraordinarily long time in a laugh torrey. officials sent two f-16 jets to shadow the flight until it landed safely. they taxied to a spot away from

the terminal and police took three people into custody. those passengers were questioned and released. well, in addition to ground zero, president obama paid his respects to the heroes of the flights that crashed into the pentagon in a field in pennsylvania. daniel nottingham on those ceremonies. >> reporter: president obama capped off a day of remembrance praising the country's resilience. >> president obama: it will be said that we kept the faith. that we tocc a painful below and we emerged stronger than before. >> reporter: he spoke at the concert of hope just hours after visiting all three 9/11 memorial sites. they placed wreaths, on the pentagon bench, one of the 134 victims. michael novo was working on the floor when flight 77 hit the pentagon. >> it's ten years and i just

start crying. a parent should not bury a child. >> an american flag is draped over the pentagon just as it was in the days following the attacks. vice-president i don't biden and defense sect leon panetta led the morning tribute to the victims. >> the terrorists who attacked the pentagon sought to weaken america, but they failed. >> reporter: bells tolled 175 miles away, after family and friends read the names of each perp who died when flight 93 crashed in shanksville, pennsylvania. earlier in the day, the president and first lady met with families of the 40 victims. and walked to the boulder that marks the spot where passengers helped bring down the plane. pentagon officials highlighted the contributions of american men and women since 9/11, saying millions have volunteered for military service, since the attacks.

in arlington, virginia, daniel nottingham, cbc 5. well those who died on flight 93 in pennsylvania were also remembered in a special ceremony in the bay area. >> hundreds of people gathered in union city to honor the heroes on that flight and their sacrifice. among those on flight 93, lauren grankolitz. she was three months pregnant with their first child. since then her husband has dedicate add birthing room in his wife's honor. he says time has helped him he'll but he still has the scar. memorial events were held all over the bay area including santa clara county. don knapp shows us where bagpipes played and doves flu. >> the commemoration of 9/11 attack victims was decidedly main street america in the oakville cemetery where the captain of flight 193, jayson werth, is buried. they gathered beneath a huge

american flag. there were con continue gents of police, firemen, and a motorcycle group, boy scouts and girl scouts, in santa clara, somewhat different looking but still american 9/11 commemoration took place. doves helped launch the community's muslim day of peace. american flags were on every table. ♪ oh, say can you see >> a 17-year-old girl sang, unaccompanied, the star spangled banner. gineen asun december urges her american friends to focus on not what divides but what includes them. >> lots of kids that day who lost their husbands and

how concorde police describe a carjacking suspect accused of making off with two cars. dustin edward cooper is wanted for violating parole. he is suspected of carjacking a vehicle in concorde this afternoon, police chased him for a time but stopped after cooper abandoned the vehicle and ran. police say he then car jacked another car, drove itty ratically and smashed it into several other cars. anyone with information about the incident is asked to call con court police. homocide detectives and fire investigators are looking into an early morning department fire where two people were found dead. it started around 1:00 a.m. in a building on cool lidge avenue. they say a man and a woman were killed. they have not been identified. investigators are looking into the possibility of foul play. the bodies appeared to have injuries not related to a fire. witnesses also reported seeing several people running away from a building after the fire started. mosquitos collected from south san jose have tested

positive for west nile virus and vector control says it will begin fogging this week. it will take place from hillsdale, it will last for several hours wednesday night. authoritiesest that between 1 to 3% of the mosquitos in southwest san jose are carrying the virus. meteorologist jim bernard joining us, getting off to a new week, how is it looking weather-wise. >> we're looking at a break in the thunderstorm activity across california through the day tomorrow, we saw a few build ups out over the east bay hills there tonight, but that's all moving on now. we look for partly cloudy skies this eveningsh coming patchy in the morning and giving way to mostly clear through the day as once again we see a slight warm up begin tomorrow and continue through mid-week across the bay. today's highs looked like this today as we saw significant cooling across the interior, 7 to 10 degrees with a 67 in santa rosa, 78 in fairfield, livermore 81, actually warmed

autopsy few degrees, around the bay it as we saw mid-to low 70s prevail for mostly bayside locations with muggy conditions prevailing as well. again, the weather-maker that's been parked off the southern california coast brought thunderstorms throughout southern california, now moving up into the northwest corner of the state. that is be depending to move and it should clear the state by tomorrow taking the threat of thunderstorms with it. so we'll look for partly cloudy skies, with minimal fog in the morning, as once again some easterly flow out there will bring a few high clouds into the area and keep the low clouds and fog to a minimum that should continue through mid-week. we'll see temperatures begin to warm starting tomorrow. mid-to upper 70s across the south bay into the low 80s, across morgan hill, we'll see more of the same, mid-to low 80s for the warmer locations, north bay should be up about 10 degrees tomorrow as well into that mid-to upper 70s range and low 70s by the time we head back to the water. taking a look at the five-day forecast here we see that trend

continue with warming expected through mid-week. nothing dramatic, now, just a brief warm-up here, back to near seasonal norms, thunderstorms moving out of the picture, and it looks like by the end of the week the low clouds and fog will be back to cool us down, and once again, to summarize the weather. >> beautiful beautiful week ahead. >> it has been interestling. >> all right. thank you very much. >> you bet. grade, they say their mission is to make sure people never forget. they say it's the largest overpass flag display in the state. three large sections of steel recovered from the world trade center were also on display. some people also chose to honor the memory of those lost by giving back. in alameda, an macoh village found people who were giving an important piece of themselves to others. >> i don't know what symbolizes the red, white, and blue right now, than to give. red blood. >> reporter: it's the way people showed their support right after the 9/11 attacks, and it's how they are memorial liesing the day today. >> i was so outraged 10 years ago by the travesty of what went on that i felt like i needed to do something. i mean every year. i mean it -- this is the time

that i give back to all those who died. >> reporter: dennis vale coo brought his 10-year-old daughter to this drive in alameda. she can't donate unsil till she is 16. she says then she will. i'm a helpful type of girl so i will do that then. >> what a better role model than a parent. it's not a big deal. >> reporter: but, in a way it is. >> giving of your heart, your soul, giving of your blood line. >> reporter: it's the same spirit that brought people to blood drives in droves right after the 9/11 attacks. there were long lines at centers all over the bay area. today in alameda there were less than 100 people giving blood, but every drop counts. >> the elk's lodge holds a semi- annual blood drive every september but, this year, they made sure that it would fall on 9/11. >> what a great day to do it. you know, this is something we can all do, and everybody should do it. >> reporter: in alameda, anne mackovic, cbc 5. images of the twin towers on fire, not how one man wants to remember them. next. his project to honor the towers the way they were. in a series of movie cameos.

so it's a celebration of that. >> reporter: celebrated with a cast ranging from superman to king kong. do you miss the twin towers? >> i do miss the twin towers a lot. >> reporter: amid all this missing, film buffs can't help telling him the clips he missed in his montage. they missed the simpson one, the one in which homer goes all the way to the top of the one tower desperate for a bathroom and when he finds it out of order he goes all the way to the top of the other tower. didn't see god spell either. a cast sang atop the world trade center as it was nearing completion in 1973. >> you must never be dispressed. [ singing ] >> reporter: there's plenty of sad irony in old film trips like this one from trading places. >> in this building it's either kill or be killed. >> reporter: after 9/11 the towers were removed from "the sopranos" open.
