being by the name of alex. there is tension in the air right now that an end to this encampment, caused by this shooting, could be around the corner. >> we need a peaceful resolution to the encampment. i call on the campers to voluntarily leave. i call on the community to be united. we need the encampment closed. >> we're not going. >> reporter: the police say they haven't found a connection yet between the shooting and the campers. but the mayor and some councilmembers say that even if last night's shooting has nothing to do with "occupy," that it underscores this place is not safe. you just heard the mayor asking campers to leave peacefully as of last night as the investigation into the shooting continues. nobody has been arrested. some "occupy" protestors say the motive was a drug deal gone bad and some of them rushed to help as the victim was beaten by five men. >> some guys from the "occupy oakland" saw everything that was going on and i was part of that so we tried to rush to his

rescue. so we scream out there, they disperse, everybody go their way, he get up and was running. and they shot him three times. >> reporter: and again, he died within the hour after that shooting occurred. now, police sources say training exercises have been cancelled this week. that would obviously free up officers for a possible raid if they are going to close this encampment. back on frank ogawa plaza lights have been brought in. that's after there was some flip-flopping on electricity here at the encampment, some sort of breaker was tripped. they don't have electricity. but as you can see, the police at the insistence of campers did bring in some artificial lights. >> do we know for sure -- have any idea if the victim was part of the encampment and for that fact i know they're looking for suspects but do they have any clue if they were part of encampment as well? >> reporter: police say at this point they have not found any

connection between the victim or the shooter in this case with the encampment. but we know that there have been several fights in the encampment. and also, plenty of rumors going on around here that it may have had to do with a drug deal gone bad. >> ann averages you have been out there for weeks now. as far as you can see just from day to day, does the camp look any smaller since the mayor came out and asked people to leave voluntarily? >> reporter: not at all. it really does not. >> all right. anne makovec -- >> simple answer. >> -- live in oaklanders thank you. this afternoon, at frank ogawa plaza, a group of veterans plans to protest police brutality. they are holding a news conference and they will begin a protest march there. two iraq war veterans have been injured apparently by police at the "occupy" protest site and an organizer of today's protest says he wants officers held responsible for using force against the protestors. richmond's mayor plans to attend a rally to honor scott

olsen injured at "occupy oakland." she defends her decision to be there instead of a veterans day event at the richmond shipyards. >> a good way to really support veterans is to promote the values that veterans, many of them fought for, many of them died for. >> organizers of the veterans day memorial in richmond believe that the mayor has little respect for the country and its traditions. veterans day has roots that reach back to the end of world war i and the city of san jose has been honoring america's war vets since 1919. anser hassan joins us life from downtown san jose the staging area for today's big parade. good morning. >> good morning, frank. we're near hp pavilion which is the start of the parade and the staging area. no one is here this early. it is the 93rd annual veterans day parade and as always one of the nation's largest.

the parade begins at noon. it starts near the pavilion and moves east along santa clara to market. and then head south on market street ending at san carlos street. if you use these streets or heading to downtown, expect delays and road closures through downtown. it's designed to honor service members who have or are still serving our country. it all starts way memorial ceremony that starts at 11 a.m. at cesar chavez plaza. that's when world war i officially ended at 11 a.m. in 1918. the parade starts at noon. the rotary club is asking people to send in pictures to losgatosrotaryclub.org so people can enjoy them as part of the memorial day celebration, as well. >> anser hassan, hopefully the rain will hold up there. and this is a special year for

the annual veterans day ceremony in q the travel vietnam veterans memorial wall is on display. here's the truck bringing it in. it's slightly smaller replica of the permanent memorial wall on the nation's wall in washington, d.c. of all those who died in the vietnam war. the ceremony in cupertino begins at 11 a.m. president obama has a full schedule of events this veterans day. we have live pictures it show you. he is going to be here later taking part in the traditional wreath-laying ceremony at arlington national cemetery in virginia. looks like they are still preparing this morning. and then later he and first lady michelle obama will travel to san diego to visit the uss carl vinson. that's the navy aircraft carrier that carried osama bin laden's body for its burial at sea. then the obamas will attend a unique veterans day event aboard the ship, a college basketball game between north carolina and michigan state which is i believe a first-of- its-kind on the aircraft carrier. pretty cool stuff, huh? >> that is pretty cool. of course we have a lot of

activities here for veterans day. we told you about a few. hopefully the weather will hold up. >> not a rainout but scattered showers around the bay area, nothing too heavy. we have already seen a few showers moving through this mornings most of that some very light activity. some of it is north of concord into vacaville, scattered light showers in that area but the bigger band off the coastline doesn't look like it will move onshore but parts of it will rotate n as it does we'll see scattered showers on and off throughout the day. so yeah, things staying unsettled today. prepare for that. bring your umbrella. a light jacket with you too. the core of the low spinning off the coast means we are probably going to see most of the rain head south. still for right now you have 40s and 50s around most of the bay area although a cool 39 degrees in santa rosa. this afternoon going to stay cool for everyone 50s at the coastline. low to mid-60s inland. the good news is a few scattered showers for today but as we look toward the weekend

paterno he saw another coach sexually abusing a boy at penn state. some believe paterno and top administrators should have done more in response. paterno of course fired this week and now there are calls for mcqueary to be fired, as well. >> i figure if you are going to fire joe paterno you should fire him because he did exactly the same them joe paterno did. >> the penn state campus has been calm since wednesday night when thousands of angry students rioted after the coach was fired. penn state plays nebraska tomorrow morning 9:00 our time. pittsburg police are looking to facebook for clues about a murder-suicide that ended with four people dead. a man apparently stressed out about his finances killed his family and then himself yesterday morning. police say the man called 911 telling the operator he was suicidal. a patrolman then found the bodies. officers say the man posted a message on his facebook account and left a note mentioning concerns about losing his home. no names have been released but

neighbors tell us the man lived with his wife and her parents. a street closed because of a gas line break is open again this morning in san francisco ambeale street was closed south of market last night after a pg&e crew broke a 16" gas pipeline. they hit it with a backhoe while working on the transbay terminal project. there was a temporary shelter in place but police say there's never any serious threat from the break. pg&e is laying off 225 workers. the "san francisco chronicle" says that the utility began the cuts wednesday and made the announcement to staff yesterday. the company is doing some reorganizing in the wake of last year's disaster in san bruno when an exploded pg&e gas pipeline killed eight people. ready for christmas shopping? black friday diehards can shop a little earlier now. retailers hope to one up everyone else on another

police are investigating a murder just yards from the let's check the day's top stories. police are investigating a murder just yards from the "occupy oakland" encampment outside city hall. witnesses say five men attacked the victim. the mayor is now asking campers to leave voluntarily. today several bay area cities will honor americans who have served the nation in times of war. one of the nation's biggest veterans day events is the annual parade in downtown san jose an event that began back in 1919. opening ceremonies begin at 11 a.m. stock futures are higher this morning on new hopes of a solution to the european debt crisis that we have heard so much about. the dow recovered more than 100 after big losses wednesday. a big finish in weather, right? >> we are going to get wet around the bay area today. bring your umbrella with you. things looking a little showery as you make your way in toward parts of the east bay right now

near fairfield. we do have some light showers headed in that direction but we are going to see more of this throughout the day today. doesn't look like a total rainout but you will see some occasional showers moving through so be prepared. skies going to stay mostly cloudy throughout the morning hours here if you are heading out the door, cloudy already. you have some scattered light showers toward the afternoon, chance of showers in the forecast and temperatures are going to only be in the 50s, maybe some mid-60s by the afternoon. here's a low off the coastline and the reason why we're just seeing showers is the main core of the low is diving to the south holding a lot of moisture at bay and drag it in towards southern california. we will see some occasional clouds and those showers spin up into the bay area but again, it's not going to be that real heavy rainfall. so that low off the coastline it is going to continue to drag to the south but before it leaves it will relief behind a few showers towards today and then looks like as we head toward the weekend things begin to dry out nicely. computer models picking up on the system and most of the moisture stays off the coast although you will see some bands onshore throughout the day today and into tonight.

by tomorrow the good news is most of that is done. just some partly cloudy skies and dry conditions. temperatures by the afternoon running up into the 50s toward the coastline. you will see some mid-60s into san jose and about 62 degrees in livermore. looking toward the weekend, thinking we're looking pretty good. partly cloudy skies on saturday, should be dry, more sunshine as we head in toward sunday and by monday and tuesday some great weather were some of the temperatures popping back up into the 70s toward the latter part of next week though clouds begin to move back in and we could see a chance of showers late in the week. that's a look at weather. let's check on traffic now with elizabeth. >> thank you, lawrence. >> we will take you out live towards silicon valley the westbound 237 commute out of milpitas fine towards san jose no big delays. we are expecting lighter traffic on veterans day. down san jose a live look at northbound 280 traffic looking great towards cupertino. 101 fine as well and top speeds as well up and down the guadalupe parkway. east bay 880 through oakland looks good as you pass the

extra 25 cents, another 25 cents if they use a transfer. and drivers would pay $3 more for parking fines. the idea will go before a governing board on monday. it's designed to make up for a two-year budget deficit of nearly $80 million. it is a camp-out for a cause this morning in san jose state university. it's the sixth annual poverty under the stars event at a statue garden. the event organizers say it's to remind people that a lot of americans are living in poverty even in wealthy metro areas like san jose. this doggone storynds happily with a wet pet rescued from an unplanned chilly dip in the bay. it happened along the embarcadero near the red java house. san francisco rescue crews got the man and dog out of water safely. despite the water temperatures in the 50s, the two were

the camp. anne makovec is in oakland where the protestors are not showing any signs of leaving. >> reporter: good morning. as you can see, at frank ogawa plaza still plenty of tents set up. the campers sleeping right now. we know a few of them did leave overnight. snow advisory but the encampment is in full effect. over here you can see a vigil that's set up for the man who was killed last night identified only as alex. i did just speak with one of the encampment members who said he was a visitor to the encampment. he came every other day and that's all we know about him at this point. police say they have not found a connection yet between the shooting and campers. the mayor and council says even if it had nothing to do with the "occupy" encampment, it under scores the place is not safe. they are asking campers to leave peacefully as the investigation into the shooting

continues. nobody has been arrested y . >> the risks are too great to have an encampment out there. i need my police forces in neighborhoods that traditionally have more violence and need the police more. it is time for the encampment to end. >> reporter: she is offering vouchers for homeless shelters for anyone who leaves this encampment on their own accord. the question remains, what if they don't? police sources say some training exercises have been cancelled which would free up officers for a possible raid. but police won't say if action is imminent yet. back out here live at frank ogawa plaza, you can see the city brought in lights overnight which is another example of some flip-flopping within city leadership because the lights and the electricity had been turned off to the encampment earlier this week and now as you saw, they do have these artificial lights brought in. so no one knows exactly what's going to happen yet or when

"occupy" santa rosa protestors can keep their camp outside city hall but there is a catch. each one has to apply for a permit to camp and they have to renew that permit after two weeks. the santa rosa city council passed that plan on a 5-2 vote at a special meeting. the city manager says she is considering hiring private security to patrol the camp. this morning richmond's mayor plans to attend a rally to honor scott olsen a veteran injured at "occupy oakland" a few weeks back. mayor gayle mclaughlin defends her decision to be at the "occupy" richmond gathering instead of going to an event at the shipyard. >> a good way to really support veterans is to promote the values that veterans, many of them fought for and died for. >> organizers of the veterans day memorial in richmond says

this looks good. it's a holiday. a lot of people are off work today so we are not expecting traffic to be as heavy as the typical friday. live look at the san mateo bridge. right side of the screen westbound 92 and bart continues to roll along on time of the it is running on a normal schedule today even despite the holiday but hey, parking it free at all bart stations across the bay area and ace, muni, caltrain, ferry, everything is on schedule. that is traffic. back to you. >> thank you. a football fan was stabbed after the raiders-chargers game in san diego. police say that the two men started fighting in the parking lot just outside of qualcomm stadium. the victim was treated at a hospital for a wound to his stomach but refused to describe his assailant to police. so far it does not appear that this fight had anything to do with the game. and there have been death threats that will keep an assistant football coach at penn state off the sidelines. mike mcqueary is the former graduate assistant who told head coach joe paterno that he saw former assistant coach

good morning, bay area. if you are headed out the door, things looking a little bit unsettled maybe a little wet out there so be prepared if you're headed out. ably the umbrella with you as we are seeing light -- bring the umbrella with you as we're seeing light showers. central valley green off the coast occasionally, moisture rolling off the cold front into the bay area. doesn't look like a rainout but looks like it will be unsettled throughout today. so right now skies mostly cloudy, temperatures mainly in the 40s and the 50s. scattered showers continuing this afternoon, temperatures 50s and 60s on the warm end. area of low pressure off the coast will continue to sag to the south. as it does, it's going to draw the moisture with it so not a real big rain event but what we'll see are occasional showers spinning up into the

jose. near alum rock exit this morning, both directions looks fine. pg&e crews are venting a gas line in san mateo county throughout the afternoon from belmont to san bruno between ralston and interstate 280. so they are warning people you could smell gas odor, hear loud noises, could sound like a jet engine so be prepared for the afternoon commute between the hours of 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. when they are doing that gas line venting. outside again here's a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. just some slight delays in some of the cash lanes. but overall, as you can see, not too bad of a drive into san francisco. if you are planning on parking in san francisco, the meters are in force. so it is a veterans day holiday so we do have some street closures, delays possible for much of the day between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., the veterans day parade so expect those delays between market street between

here in the bay area. the annual parade in downtown san jose an event that began way back in 1919. owning the dow recovered 113 points yesterday after wednesday's huge losses. asian and european markets are joining the party this morning encouraging news. u.s. stock futures are higher. stocks will be traded on veterans day but the bond market will be closed. muni is considering fare hikes. riders paying cash would pay an extra 25 cents and another 25 cents if they use a transfer. drivers will pay $3 more for parking fines. the idea will go before the governing board on monday. they are designed to make up for a two-year budget deficit of nearly $80 million. >> think parking is bad here? an extreme way to protect prime parking spots on one southern
