ready for another epic commute this afternoon. >> it's not good. they don't know the impact they're putting on everybody. >> well, good afternoon, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm brian hackney in today for michelle griego. a commute nightmare this morning and this could be only the beginning. thousands of cars bumper-to- bumper inching forward just trying to get to work this morning. take a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. usually at this hour of the day things are moving smoothly. there's something of a you about. the bart strike intensifies this afternoon. there's something of a backup. >> there is a rally outside oakland city hall. cate caugiran just spoke with union representatives from both rallies. cate? >> reporter: unfortunately, we still don't know as far as bart is concerned when negotiations will resume but right now they are coming together -- the different unions that are striking here in oakland, as part of a community or solidarity rally. you can take a look now. there are hundreds of bart

employees who walked off the job today joined by oakland city workers. union workers have been here since the early-morning hours with their signs, noisemakers and chants. [ chanting ] >> reporter: picketers took to the streets blocking off 14th and broadway just an hour ago. now all of them are assembled together and frank ogawa plaza. bart and union workers haven't found a compromise on the major sticking points: pay, pension, health, safety. in addition bart workers are joined by members from local 21 and city workers from seiu, including senior and youth center employees, street sweepers and pavers all the way to urban economic development. city workers plan to go back to work tomorrow but them to get their message heard at city hall. >> belongs to the people and we want it to be used in a manner

that benefits the citizen and be fair to the employees. currently, that's not the story. and the deception and the misinformation around the budget is ridiculous. >> for the past two years, our members have lost 27% in purchasing power and we are just asking to have some of that purchasing power restored. >> reporter: as for bart employees going back to work, that's not so certain. this morning, take a look at this commuters had to wait in long lines to take alternative methods of travel. some of them resorted to carpooling and ferries while others took advantage of the shuttles that bart offered and you're taking a look now again as we said all of those union workers back here, you know, converging here at frank ogawa plaza. as far as bart and the unions are concern, we said they are still unsure when the talks between bart management and two of its largest unions will resume. so we have to be prepared that this could happen again

tomorrow. reporting live in oakland, cate caugiran, back to you. and here's a look at some of the key issues in the bart strike. the union wants pay hikes of 21% over the next three years. but management is offering 8% over four years. bart wants its workers to pay a higher health insurance premium. agency also wants employees to contribute more towards their pensions. >> my word of advice to people would be to be patient, to find a different way to get around if you can, be flexible with your schedule. and if you can, work from home or take the day off and hope that this all works out soon. >> no word on when unions and officials will resume their talks. many usual bart riders boarded ac transit transbay buses to get to san francisco from alameda county but kpix 5's mike sugerman explains, this transit alternative may not last long. hey, mike. >> reporter: well, that's true, brian. can't get there from here if you took bart -- you can't take

bart. ac transit? it wasn't as bad as you might have thought. but they put off a strike just for a day and we don't know what's going to go on tomorrow. >> the only ones that are running in the morning right now are the s, o, z -- >> reporter: new bus riders learned the ropes quickly. >> i don't know where i'm going. >> i'm at a loss. >> reporter: no one was bart- ing under the bay so they bused it over. sometimes in much more comfort than they were used to. >> looks like a limo! comfortable seats in there and you're going to have the whole bus with three people. >> reporter: gordon lowe's counter-commute san francisco to concord on a west cat links out of hercules comfortable but time-consuming. >> i only spend an hour, hour 45 minutes commuting from door to door but this way i'm spending going to be closer to 3-plus hours, maybe 4. >> reporter: ac transit buses were take up the slack but

those drivers' contract expired last night, as well. there is a chance they might go on strike too. talks continue, buses continue to roll. buses more crowded than normal but not as jammed as they might have been. special bart shuttles were set up from walnut creek, el cerrito del norte, fremont, and dublin-pleasanton. they will return for the afternoon commute. >> i won't want to come back running. i think the bart strike what they're fighting for is good for what them but it's not good for us as people who catch the bus. i think it sucks. >> it's not good. they don't know the impact they are putting on everybody. i have no car. i rely on bart transportation and i have finals this week and you cannot redo finals. >> reporter: and if ac transit buses do go out on strike, it would be a complete mess because they picked up a lot of the slack for brian. at the moment even the drivers don't know. >> mike sugerman live in san francisco, appreciate it, mike. there were long lines this

morning for people waiting to board alameda's main street ferry. service to san francisco has been beefed up. san francisco bay ferries are able to carry 50,000 passengers today instead of the usual 20,000. first boat at 6 a.m. had three times the usual passenger load. some bart riders say taking the ferry added hours to their commute and it was more crowded according to regular riders. >> normally i show up five minutes ahead of time and walk right on and never a line. >> reporter: today you're here 40 minutes early or so? >> yes, at least. i'm late. >> bart employees are a bunch of crybabies and they need to quit chair whining. they already make more than most of us. >> alameda is offering free shuttle service from a dozen satellite parking sites and ac transit bus stops. across the bay commuters in marin county had a less

stressful morning since they don't have bart. an additional 180 riders came to san francisco today. on the golden gate bridge there were fewer cars than an average monday. there's also little effect in santa clara county. bart doesn't operate in santa clara county not yet anyway. bart is offering free but limited bus service between san francisco and four other towns. >> kpix 5's sue kwon asked people at the dublin-pleasanton station how the shutdown changed their commute. >> reporter: i'm sue kwon at the dublin-pleasanton bart station where bart has set up one of four shuttle services going into san francisco. fremont, el cerrito, walnut creek and dublin-pleasanton, all those stations have these services set up. it is first come, first served and this is what passengers had to say about it this morning. >> i was here in '97 and i drove and it was a nightmare so i'm not doing that again. >> reporter: how many hours of extra prep time and transit time -- >> i got up at 4:00 this

morning. so who knows when i'll leave. >> what time is it right now? 5:30? i started 2.5 hours early today. >> reporter: when you board the bus, you'll get one of these, it's a ticket and you need this ticket to board the buses coming back from san francisco. the bus will board between 3 and 7 p.m. again, first come, first served. if you don't get a spot, you're out of luck. they have about 10 buses. so far five have left this morning with about 50 on board each bus. and it's been very calm. people are tired because they started the day early. but no problems so far to speak of here in dublin-pleasanton. sue kwon, kpix 5. bart passengers make up about 5% of the bay area's total commuters but without those trains running, major jams are certain. the last time there was a strike against bart that was back in 1997 and oh, by the way that lasts 6 days. there is one bit of good news on the strike front. ac transit union members are

a-c transit in addition to the bart strike here is something else that contributed to the commuter nightmare today. an ac transit bus was stalled on the right lane of the bay bridge at treasure island this morning. not good. the maze backed up for miles in all directions. wall street a good day for the dow up 117 with just a little over an hour left in the trading day. a fire in arizona is being called one of the worst disasters in wildfire history. out of control flames trapped and killed 19 firefighters. melanie woodrow reports. >> reporter: daylight revealed the destruction in yarnell,

arizona. thousands of acres charred, hundreds of homes burned to the ground. late sunday there was a tragic discovery, the bodies of 19 firefighters who were members of an elite team called the granite mountain hotshots. >> we are devastated. we just lost 19 of some of the finest people you'll ever meet. >> reporter: they were fighting on the front line of a wildfire that's still raging. the wind-driven flames suddenly changed direction toward the crew and the members tried to take shelter in small fireproof tents used in emergencies. each member of the crew was wearing a belt pack like this one. the firefighters dig a hole in the ground and then themselves up with this fire resistant material. it's only used in extreme emergencies. and it gives the firefighters about a 50/50 chance of survival. fire officials say some of the firefighters were found inside their shelters, others outside. one member of the crew escaped the flames and is being treated at a hospital.

>> it was terrible. i mean, the [ indiscernible ] was that big around -- embers were that big around and flying everywhere. >> reporter: he says his family's house they lived in for 26 years is gone. he escaped with a few precious items and knows he is not alone in this tragedy. >> my heart goes out to those 19 firemen that lost their lives, you know,. >> reporter: president obama called the 19 dead firefighters heroes. melanie woodrow for cbs news, congress, arizona. >> that's terrible. as so often happens investigators believe in this case lightning sparked the wildfire. so far, more than 200 homes have been destroyed there. president obama is in tanzania today on the last leg of his african trip. yesterday, mr. obama and his family visited robbin island the prison where nelson mandela was an inmate for some 2 decades nearly. the obamas stood saturday night the cell where mandela spent 18

years in prison. the former president of south africa is in critical condition on life support. if you're watching us, you know that it was scorching hot this weekend and today it's going to be hotter in parts of the bay area. here's video from chopper 5 yesterday over stinson beach in marin county full of people trying to beat the heat. with so much air-conditioning in use, though, the state's power supply is being put to the test so cal-iso has been calling for a flex alert for today and tomorrow. >> it's been some wear and tear on equipment as this heat wave picks up steam. >> people are encouraged to reduce energy use especially in the late afternoon. power usage is expected to peak at about 4:30 this afternoon. what was it a week ago it was raining in the bay area? >> we got an inch and a third of rain between monday and tuesday. >> amazing. >> and now we are smack-dab in

the middle of a heat wave in the 100s. you want to cool down? we have that fog making its way in through the golden gate right now but even that is mixing out. so you get the idea a big breakdown in temperatures. cooler at the coast. we have maxed out in san francisco at 77, now back to 71. 92 in livermore right now and 89 in concord. so we're heading up this afternoon. we have heat warnings up around most of the bay area except right along the coastline and just inside the bay. these oppressive temperatures going to last through about wednesday. then it looks like we'll start to cool things down a little bit. so high pressure is still locked in place here. it's cranking up hot desert air into the bay area even monsoonal clouds moving overhead but still hot temperatures in the interior milder at the coast and the bay. these numbers going to be impressive again this afternoon maybe not record-breaking but still very hot. 102 degrees expected in morgan hill 97 in campbell about 72 in half moon bay and about 88

degrees in fremont. east bay is where you're really going to feel the heat today up to 105 in brentwood, 105 antioch, 103 livermore, 104 pleasanton, inside the bay you get a little bit of that sea breeze ramping up and that's going to help keep the temperatures down about 82 degrees the max in oakland. about 98 and hot in santa rosa. so it's going to be hot during the day and overnight it's going to stay mild and that's why the heat warnings are up, not much time to recover from the heat. even some overnight lows down into the 70s and that's it so staying very, very mild. >> wow. >> at night. tomorrow could be hotter looks like the hot temperatures continue through wednesday and then it looks lick we start to cool down on the 4th of july. >> you're pushing the cooldown later in the week. >> looks like it's coming late so we need it though day after day of heat. >> four, five days in a row. thank you, lawrence. student loan rates are now

after crashing into a west oakland church last night. e high speed chase first stard four people were arrested after crashing into a west oakland church last night. the high-speed chase first started here in san francisco where the suspects were involved in a shooting. investigators say the group then fled to oakland and totaled the vehicle.

no one was in the church at the time. in pleasanton this morning a woman crashed into her condo when she was parking her van at st. michael's circle. she hit the gas instead of the brakes. the driver and her child who was also in the van were not injured. starting today, college students will be facing double the interest rate on new student stafford loans going from 3.4 to 6.8%. the house of representatives couldn't agree to stop the hike. the loan rate hike only affects new loans but lawmakers say that they can change the interest rate back to 3.4% but if they do that they are going to wait until after the 4th of july. as of today, shark fin soup is banned in california. it comes after a two-year battle between environmentalists and some chinese-american groups. restaurants or markets that sell shark fins will face up to $1,000 in fines. officials say millions of sharks are killed every year
