that matter on "kpix 5 news this morning. >> your realtime captioner: linda marie macdonald an ime is 5- i want to see that bridge story! good morning, it's wednesday, july 24. i'm brian hackney. mr. mallicoat is off. >> i'm michelle griego. time now is 5:00. let's check the weather with lawrence. >> good morning. the weather improving around the bay area today. of course last couple of days a little unsettled with showers. starting out with fog this morning thick at the coastline. some fog slipping inside the bay, as well. temperature-wise it is still a mild start to the day. 63 degrees in livermore. 61 in san jose. and 56 in san francisco. a lot of that subtropical moisture sweeping out of town still a chance of some leftover thunderstorms in the sierra nevada but we're done with it for now here in the bay area and that means we're going to see a very nice typical summer day. lots of sunshine in most spots. except at the coastline cool temperatures in the mid-60s in san francisco right on the

average today of 66. 91 and warmer into livermore and 82 in san jose. we'll have more on your weather coming up. let's check the roads with elizabeth. thanks, lawrence. this time we are going to check the drive along the peninsula specifically around sfo. there is roadwork northbound so just a heads up various lanes blocked. we are seeing a few slow sensors in the southbound direction, as well. so all the approaches to the bay bridge if you are driving through the east bay, highway 24, looks great all the way through the caldecott and no delays so far on 580 or highway 13. westbound 580 from the altamont pass just beginning to see our first delays now coming out of tracy and continuing to about north flynn. bart now has 21 trains all running on time. ace train number one also reporting no delay. that's your latest "timesaver traffic." back to you. >> thank you. developing news out of santa clara this morning. we're at the scene of a police investigation near reed's indoor gun range. you're looking live at this. police say they received a

silent alarm from that location. when officers showed up, they saw three people trying to flee the scene. police say the suspects were throwing guns and ammo out of their car window. all three people were arrested. that's all we know at this point. but as we gather more information, we'll let you know. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec is live in mobile5 with a first-of-its-kind crackdown to reduce crashes on i-80. >> reporter: i am here on mobile5. we are on i-80 eastbound right now. [ signal breakup ] >> we are having trouble with her signal so we'll check on that and get back to anne later this morning. a driver could be facing reckless driving and other charges after a series of crashes in san francisco yesterday afternoon. the last collision in the alamo square area sent four people to the hospital including the driver.

witnesses tell us she hit other cars sped down hayes street and ran a stop sign before the crash. police don't think drinking was involved. oakland's police chief explains why his department was caught off guard when protestors reacted to the george zimmerman acquittal earlier this month. chief sean whent told the city council it was an intelligence failure. dozens of protestors did this. they broke windows. they also bashed in windows, caused other damage to downtown businesses and the chief says they expected a big protest the day after the verdict was announced but not that night. >> we had a plan pour responding. however, when all the information that we were getting was all contrary to bringing people in that night the decision was made to bring them in the next night. >> reporter: you didn't anticipate any type of protest based on a verdict saturday afternoon? >> well, there's always the possibility that could happen and in behind side i would say we would do things differently. >> the chief says overtime for officers during the vandalism

will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. developing news out of the gulf of mexico. we're learning more about a fire that started on a blown- out gas rig. the well is about 60 miles southwest of grand isle, louisiana. this is what the rig looked like yesterday. we'll take a look at this picture with natural gas. you can see it spewing out of it. 44 workers were evacuated. no one was injured. the company, wild well control, is assessing how to bring the well under control. according to the the bureau of safety environmental enforcement only gas is flowing from the well, not oil. three years ago, an oil rig exploded in the gulf. it was the worst offshore disaster the u.s. has ever seen. deja vu for former new york congressman anthony weiner apologizing again for more explicit photos and messages. gossip website the dirty exposed other inappropriate online relationships. this time with a 22-year-old. weiner reportedly promised her many things including a job at

a political website and chicago condo where they could meet and have sex. the new york mayoral candidate came forward apologizing yesterday with his wife by his side. >> there is no question that what i did was wrong. this behavior is behind me. i have apologized to my wife huma and i'm grateful she has worked through these issues with me. >> he resigned his house seat in 2011 after apologizing for sending x-rated photos and chats. until today he was neck and neck in the mayor's race. the "new york times" and the daily news are calling on the former congressman to drop out. the obama administration is warning the nation would be at risk of more terrorism if it stopped the nsa's massive surveillance of phone records. the national security agency chief alexander is on capitol

hill. >> what we're doing in the metadata program is finding a needal haystack. you need the haystack to find the needle in the haystack. >> another bill would withhold money from any military operations in syria another with egypt. a plan to cut student loan rates could be up for a vote in the senate today. the proposal supported by the white house would link interest rates to financial markets. rates would go down for the fall to 3.9% for undergrads but as the market improves, the rates would go up. interest rates on subsidized stafford loans doubled to 6.8% on july 1. the president's popularity in california is slipping. a new field poll finds his approval rating dropped 10 points in the golden state over the last five months. 52% of californians think president obama is doing a good job down from 62% in february. 57% say they still have a favorable overall opinion of him. now back to our top story,

kpix 5 reporter anne makovec reports from mobile5 on i-80. >> reporter: we just crossed intersection of 4 light traffic eastbound, more going westbound as you might imagine. what's also going on here on the highway for the next week is a campaign called the i-80 challenge. that is meaning a crackdown on a number of offenses with the goal to have zero fatalities on this highway between now and this time next week. that is a lofty goal because there's 2900 miles of i-80 from here in california all the way to new york so we have 10 state highway patrol agencies participating in this crackdown, looking for speeding, distracted driving, failure to signal, following too closely, not wearing a seatbelt, anything that could lead to a fatality.

these are all preventable. all these law enforcement agencies hope they're going to make an impact. >> so much vehicular travel on this roadway and the numbers of fatalities, injuries that occur each year are significant. and many of those which are avoidable. >> reporter: the number of fatalities actually increases during summer vacation. that is why they are doing this week long challenge this week. and someone apparently dies in a collision here on i-80 in just the california stretch once every 8 days. hopefully in the 2900-mile stretch there will be zero in the next week. back to you. >> that's anne makovec live. there is a serial peeping tom in san carlos and police are telling women to watch out. the san mateo county sheriff's office put out the alert last night. they say the man has been seen twice on the north side of town spying on women in the shower at night. authorities say to call the police if you see anything suspicious. other bay area headlines, the man charged with killing two women at a san francisco

jewelrymart is expected in court today. 23-year-old barry white from antioch is being held without bail for the murders on july 12. his arraignment was delayed because of a dispute over who will represent him. he wants his own lawyer to be paid for by the city rather than a public defender. a team with a focus on training black sailors is suing the america's cup the suit claims the host of the race rejected their application without reason. the group is requesting a chance to race against billionaire larry ellison's oracle team for the right to represent the u.s. it could delay the cup final races in september. 5:09. coming up, steroids scandal. can alex rodriguez avoid a lifetime suspension? >> the duke and duchess of cambridge, what hints we are

incredible video of southwe flight 345's hard landing io new york from tennessee on l investigators new this morning, a passenger recorded incredible video of southwest flight 345's hard land into new york from tennessee on monday. federal investigators are trying to figure out why the plane's nose landing gear collapsed as the plane touched down at laguardia. that's what it looked like. a lot of the passengers were shaken up but not the man who recorded this video. >> first time we come into new york and we crash, all right! >> well, he has a good attitude. at that time, brian foster didn't know that ten people had been injured. southwest reached out to passengers of flight 345. southwest is apologizing for the incident and agreed to refund those airfares. >> you're not supposed to have your phone on during landing. >> you make a good point although you could article that he didn't have the wireless part of it off. >> he was in airplane mode.

the duke and duchess of cambridge are spending the day in their new home in london still trying to figure out a name for the prince. cbs reporter tina kraus is at kensington palace where the queen just visited the future heir. exciting, tina. reporter: it sure is, brian and michelle. hello. yes, we understand now also after that 30-minute visit with this unnamed baby cambridge, that baby mom and dad, will and kate, have left the palace and we believe they may well be headed to bucklebury, that's kate's hometown just outside of london. of course, her parents are going to be excited to get some time with their new grandson. reporter: the queen of england arrived at kensington palace this morning to meet her great-grandson and futurer successor to the throne but queen elizabeth wasn't the first to get to see the newest member of the royal family. both sets of grandparents, prince charles and camilla as well as michael and carol

middleton, got their first look at the baby on tuesday. >> they're both doing really well. we're so thrilled. >> reporter: after that, william and kate more formally known as the duke and duchess of cambridge introduced their son to the world. they were beaming with pride just like any other first-time parents. [ screaming ] >> spent some time with him and any parent having probably know what it's feeling like. >> reporter: then dad secured his son's child seat in the suv and drove them to their new home at kensington palace. the baby prince's new home is set in a peaceful park and for a moment you feel like you're in the english countryside but it's actually right in the heart of london. >> it's a lovely place. i come here most mornings. it's a beautiful place, as you can see, when it's not raining. it's fantastic. the royal baby is, you know, right here in the middle. >> reporter: prince william spent much of his childhood living in the house and now he is back with his own family. he and kate have reportedly spent millions of dollars

refurbishing the home to get ready for their new arrival. and a touchup or two was probably needed. a royal spokesman says the palatial estate was last updated more than 50 years ago. we believe that prince william and kate at this point have not hired a nanny, although that could change in their near future. this couple wanting to be very hands-on. kate said yesterday that william changed the first nappy. that's a diaper, for you americans. >> i'm stunned that it's actually sunny and 75 degrees in london. and second, why -- i know this is a basic question, but they have had months and months to prepare, why haven't they decided on a name yet? what's taking them so long? >> reporter: oh, you know what? i just think it's an overwhelming task to figure out a name for this future king. i think they probably do have a name in mind. it's possible that they maybe

possibly ran that by the queen when she visited today. we expect in the next couple of days, we're led to believe, they will announce this sooner rather than later. technically the clock is ticking. they only have 41 more days to choose a name because every parent, royal or not, in britain must get his new child's name on the books within 42 days. >> tina, are there any summer travel plans for the new family? >> reporter: well, you know, people have already been talking about how will and kate surprised us. they surprised us by leaving so quickly. today we thought they would spend a few days here and then maybe head to bucklebury but they're a modern couple on the move. so yes, no firm travel plans in place but certainly it wouldn't surprise us if that happened sometime soon. australia has been hoping for a visit from them for a while. >> all right. well, tina kraus, live in london, thank you so much. and you can find more on the royal baby on our website,

[ laughter ] >> let's go live towards the golden gate bridge. quiet. lawrence will talk more about the forecast but we are seeing a lot of fog this morning pretty thick affecting your visibility this morning across the span coming from marin county. still light at the bay bridge. no hot spots on the roads so far this morning. it's a very nice drive into san francisco. and a quick check of the nimitz -- sorry, this is 580 approaching the dublin interchange. getting more crowded on the road. the drive time is still under a half hour from the altamont pass to the dublin interchange.

there is overnight roadwork eastbound 580 approaching hacienda. various lanes blocked. the latest drive time is right now up to 23 minutes, just changed. so that's coming from the altamont pass out towards 680 and the delay is actually farther east on 205 coming out of tracy. westbound highway 4 now sluggish. that just changed through antioch. so that "a" street to somersville commute, now it if you do it every day, starting to get a little busy. coming down the eastshore freeway no big delays yet through berkeley. that is your latest "timesaver traffic." for more on your forecast this morning, here's lawrence. >> yeah. some improving weather around the bay area today. no threat of showers outside. the subtropical moisture has moved out. low clouds are sneaking onshore. and that is very thick out toward the coastline. dense fog there. some of that fog beginning to sneak inside the bay,too. this afternoon mostly sunny skies inland, 90s in the interior valleys. 70s and mild inside the bay and you will see some 60s out

toward the coastline with low clouds and fog. monsoonal clouds beginning to lift out. you can see some of that making its way out. it will be warmer for most of us today except at the coast low clouds and fog. some of that patchy fog stretching inside the bay on our futurecast fog product going to slowly break up and pull back toward the coastline. going to see that at the beaches the better part of the day not a whole lot of sunshine at the coast but plenty of sunshine in the bay and the valleys. hot into morgan hill with 93 degrees. 82 san jose. 77 hayward. i think we're going to see plenty of sunshine in many of the east bay valleys. 91 in livermore. 87 in pleasant hill. and about 83 degrees in the napa valley. inside the bay today, 73 degrees, lots of sunshine this afternoon in oakland. and about 66 in san francisco. looking out over the next couple of days, we are going to keep these temperatures fairly steady maybe cooling as the weak area of low pressure pushes toward the coastline. this weekend we could see more clouds. but right now holding steady a

we're live in santa clara where police arrested three suspects in connection to a robbery at a shooting range. we'll have the details coming up. plus, google's gift. what the tech giant is giving to san francisco today free of charge. >> thick fog settling in over parts of the bay area. warmer weather ahead. we'll talk about that coming up. we have bart delays on the pittsburg bay upon the line. we'll tell you about that coming up. it's wednesday morning july 24. i'm brian hackney. frank is off today. >> i'm michelle griego. time now is 5:30. cate caugiran is in santa clara gathering new information on a break-in at the bay area's largest indoor gun range. kate. >> reporter: there are two major holes in the business. this is probably one of the ways where the suspects tried

to enter the building. police are in the process of determining if the guns have been located. all suspects have been arrested and are in police custody. this happened at reed's indoor range just off of highway 101. according to the business's website it is the largest indoor shooting range in the bay area. and santa clara police say around 3:30 this morning three suspects tried to break in and in doing so, they set off a silent alarm. they threw guns and ammo presumably stolen from the range. they tried to flee on foot and they were arrested by police. three people are in custody. two men and one woman. we have shot video from the

inside. live in santa clara, cate caugiran, kpix 5. our mobile5 technology is taking us on i-80 this morning. kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran -- kpix 5 reporter anne makovec has more on the national crackdown. >> reporter: we just saw a chp officer on a motorcycle pass us and that's part of a crackdown that's going to be going on because they are on the lookout for a number of driving offenses. it's called the i-80 challenge and the goal is to have zero fatalities on i-80 between now and this time next week. the number of fatalities goes up during the summer months. they are looking for violations that causes preventable deaths, speeding, failing to signal, following too closely, not wearing a seatbelt. when we're talking i-80 it's

not just here in california. there are 2900 miles of i-80 between here in california and new york. so there are 10 state highway patrol agents participating in this challenge and hope to make n impact. >> still need to be reminded to set down the phone, to avoid the distractions, to slow down to increase the following distance and that's what this campaign is targeted to do. >> reporter: be on the lookout for the officers. they will be out in full force hoping to accomplish this goal of zero fatalities. anne makovec, kpix 5. two more alleged victims are linked to a daycare worker charged with sex crimes. detectives say at least two more girls ages 5 and 7 have

come forward saying 20-year-old nicholas [ indiscernible ] sexually abused them. the man was arrested mid-july on allegations of sexual contact with a six-year-old girl and sexual assault of a teenaged girl. san jose high school district plans to sue the testing group for throwing out scores. ets invalidated ap scores because of improper seating during the test. a community meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at mills high school. a disruption cleared richmond city council meeting. officers escorted people out. they didn't arrest anybody. it still isn't clear what prompted the disruption. the minimum wage in

berkeley could be going up. berkeley's labor commission meets today to talk about it. it's recommending an increase from $8 an hour to $10.55. some restaurants want exemptions for employees who can earn hundreds a day in tips. >> right now we pay servers $8 an hour. okay? but they are the highest wage earners in the restaurant. there's 44 states in the union that have a tipped wage law where you don't have to pay tipped employees the full minimum wage. if you go to new york city, for example, or the state of new york, you pay your servers $2.15 an hour. >> some employers say they would have to cut back on benefit if the minimum wage goes up. soon you'll be able to enjoy the great outdoors in san francisco and have free wi-fi service at the same time. the plan is expected to be announced today. google plans to bring wireless

internet access to the area. they pay the $600,000. lawrence and i are disappointed because we never saw thunderstorms. >> no. we were hoping for it. everything has to go just right to get it. >> there was a chance. >> there was a slight chance. didn't happen but now we're clearing out the skies. for the folks who like sunshine and warmer weather, you will see more of that today although we are starting with thick fog at the coastline early on. otherwise mostly clear in the interior valleys. temperatures mild today 50s and sixes stepping outside. you can see that monsoonal moisture that brian was talking about, some of that sliding out. slight chance of thunderstorms over the sierra nevada. so watch out there. otherwise we are going to see clouds early on today. and a whole lot of sunshine by the afternoon. hot in morgan hill, about 93. about 82 in san jose. east bay numbers creeping back up into the 80s and the 90s. and then inside the bay, well, we'll see a pleasant 66 degrees in san francisco. and a very mild 73 degrees and sunny this afternoon into

oakland. there are delays starting at lafayette heading to pittsburg-bay point direction a stalled maintenance trucks on the traffic 15-minute delays lafayette to pittsburg but every other train line on time, muni, caltrain and ace no delays. let's go outside. here's a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. starting to see a few delays a couple of minutes deep in some of the cash lanes. but the fastrak lanes are good until they turn the metering lights then it's a different story. the east bay 880 in oakland, all the overnight roadwork from oakland down into hayward has been picked up. all lanes reopened nice flow of traffic both directions. that is your "timesaver traffic." back to you. >> thank you. 21-month-old daphne webb has been missing for two weeks. her father says someone took her from his suv on july 10

while he went inside a convenience store. daphne webb's family handed out flyers this weekend. her father was with volunteers searching for clues in the 21- month-old's disappearance. daphne was last seen wearing orange pajamas with pink hearts and pink socks. agents with the california department of justice arrested two state employees they say took bribes. the attorney general says 42- year-old stephanie clark and 62- year-old danny compton took bribes from a vendor to inflate quotes for office supplies. :00 works for fish & game, compton works for caltrans. all three are accused of bribery, conspiracy and misappropriating state funds. the names of the police officers questioned about using pepper spray at uc-davis may be revealed. the court says there is no reason to keep confidential the names of the officers who doused "occupy" wall street

a solid opening in 45 minutes. stock futures are up this morning. ashley morrison of cbsmoneywatch.com has all the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. an uneven day on wall street yesterday. the dow gained 22 points to close at yet another record high but the nasdaq dropped 21 points. apple both the streets. the tech giant reported they sold more iphones than expected but profits dropped 22%. still, those results topped expectations and shares jumped nearly 5% in after hours training. ceo tim cook added that apple will be releasing you this products in the upcoming months. ford is set to hire more workers than expected. they initially planned to high 2200 workers but will now hire 3,000 as demand for new vehicles continues to grow. the post office plans to phase

warming up toward the middle of next week. let's check the roads with elizabeth. thanks, lawrence. and we're just getting some updated information from bart about these delays. right now it's 10 to 15 minutes and it does include bart trains heading into san francisco. so it's on the pittsburg-bay point line. there is still a stalled vehicle on the tracks so 10- to 15-minute delays in both directions towards pittsburg and sfo. all other train lines are on time. muni, caltrain and as are reporting no delays so far this morning. quick check of the south bay, there is some debris reported in lanes northbound 880 approaching brokaw not much of a delay though through downtown. things look good. and your other east bay drive times westbound 580 definitely a little slow now through the livermore valley. but the nimitz in oakland 880 and the eastshore freeway nice and light. 19 minutes on westbound 80, for example, from the carquinez bridge to the maze.
