>> and he got it! >> your realtime captioner: linda marie macdonald. >> good morning, it's wednesday, it's september 4. good to have you on board. i'm frank mallicoat. >> and i'm michelle griego. time now is 5:00. we're following breaking news now out of the east bay. one person was killed in a fire in san leandro overnight. kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran spoke to a woman who tried to get the person out of the burning trailer. cate. >> reporter: michelle, we're told it was a dramatic scene when neighbors first arrived. we know that the fire investigator right now is here [ signal breakup ] this is a crime scene. you can take a look now still pretty busy out here at this mobile home park. as you mentioned earlier we did speak with one neighbor who was here. she saw smoke and actually tried to help the woman who was inside. >> are you okay? i don't know who she is. she said, no! i'm not! >> reporter: alameda county

fire says the fire started around 3:35 this morning. within minutes firefighters say they were on scene. they went into fast attack mode because they heard from neighbors that someone was inside. the neighbors say it was a woman. that's unconfirmed. neighbors said they got here before firefighters. we worked quickly to try and extinguish the flames from that trailer and they said they actually even tried to break the windows trying to get her out. neighbors said that this woman in fact was a hoarder but firefighters say there was a great amount of stuff inside again could not confirm that detail. we are told that the fire started in the back of the travel trailer. again investigators are still here on scene trying to figure out how this whole thing started in the first place so there is still a bit of work to be done here on scene. again, we'll be getting more details as -- we'll be providing you more information as we get it. live in san leandro, cate caugiran, kpix 5. let's check traffic and weather.

>> we'll start with the weather first. we have some patchy fog outside right now. looks like not a bad start to the day. not seeing the drizzle out toward the coastline. so we have some 50s and some 60s at this hour not as muggy around the bay area as we're seeing that subtropical moisture making its way eastward. so as we head in towards the afternoon, 83 in livermore, 38 in concord and 69 degrees spot on average in san francisco. much warmer weather is on the way. we'll talk about it coming up. let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> we'll check on the roads and westbound 580 just got your usual brake lights beginning already at 5:02 this morning out of tracy so the commute begins but through the livermore valley things are still moving at the limit. southbound 880 is still a little sluggish even though they had cleared that accident. it was approaching the oak street exit. they have cleared all those

cars to the oak street off- ramp. a few brake lights through downtown oakland. bay bridge no problems so far. we did see bigger-than-usual backups yesterday but i think there's just a lot of folks trying to check out the new views and the new eastern span that opened two days ago. that is traffic. back to you. >> thank you. the man convicted of holding three women captive for years was found dead in an ohio prison. officials say they found ariel castro hung in his jail cell. cbs news reporter susan mcginnis has the very latest developments from overnight. >> reporter: ariel castro the man responsible for holding three cleveland women captive for about a decade has apparently taken his own life. late last night, prison officials said inmate ariel castro was found hanging in his cell this evening at 9:20 p.m. at the correctional reception center in orient. shortly after, he was transporte to the hospital

where he was pronounced dead. a thorough review of the incident is under way." in late july ariel castro was sentenced to life in prison plus 1,000 years for the kidnapping, rape and torture of amanda berry, gina dejesus and michelle knight. a reporter talked with his aunt. she is concerned about how the girls will take the news of the suicide. >> then she also said, well, now he has to answer to god. that was it. he has to answer to god. >> reporter: the girls were kidnapped between 2002 and 2004 at ages 16, 14 and 20. they were rescued in may when amanda berry escaped from castro's home. neighbors say this is an appropriate end. >> i think he did those girls a favor by taking his own life because he took theirs. >> reporter: castro fathered a 6-year-old daughter with amanda berry during her catchivity. in new york, susan mcginnis, kpix 5. >> castro was taken off suicide watch in early june after it was determined he was not a risk and since then he had been

in protective custody checked by the guards every 30 minutes. union city police have released the identity of a man killed during a confrontation with officers. investigators say 46-year-old virgil worrell was screaming profanities, acting incoherently when police responded to reports of a man firing a gun saturday on can nita way off officers shot them after he pointed his gun at them. there is a call for a hearing into the way san francisco police investigate accidents involving bicycles. the request from a san francisco supervisor comes after a truck struck and killed a woman on a bike south of market last month. police say the truck driver was at fault but he hasn't been cited and the case has not gone to prosecutors. a bay area oyster farm suffered another set back in its fight to stay open. drakes bay oyster company plants and harvests at least a third of the state's oysters at point reyes. now it's a step closer to closing. the judges ruled yesterday to

uphold a previous decision not to renew the farm's lease and instead return the area to the wilderness. the farm owner is considering asking the full court to review the decision. the bus line in san mateo county is looking to lower prices. samtrans will hold a public hearing on the proposed fare changes this afternoon. the plan is to lower day passes and offer group discounts to housing complexes and businesses in hopes of attracting more riders. the opening of the new bay bridge has bay area transportation officials looking forward to the next big thing. a couple of projects are in the works now. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec is in fremont this morning the starting point of one of those projects. anne?! >> reporter: yeah, because this right now is the end of the line for bart here in fremont. that is about to change. bart is moving south and that is just one of several big projects on the line right now for bay area transportation officials. let's take a live look right now. it's a beautiful new bay

bridge. that's the most recent accomplishment. $6.4billion and almost 24 years to complete. as this project wraps up this one is under way. the bart extension from fremont to san jose and santa clara. its going to be even more expensive than the bay bridge, about $7 billion. that won't be finished for several years. so as we have seen, there's a good chance of cost overruns over the years and then there's the mother of all public works projects, high-speed rail from san francisco to southern california costs now estimated between $65 billion and $80 billion. >> we have seen how tough it is to build big projects these days in our state with all the red tape and all the chances for people to belly ache about things. i think the high-speed rail project is going to have a lot of those same troubles in store. >> but the next big project is the fourth bore of the caldecott tunnel in the east bay. that could be open by the end of the month. we'll talk about that coming up in the next half hour.

>> a lot of big projects in the area. anne, is there any way to prevent costs from getting out of control? >> reporter: you know, the whole bay bridge project and how that went down is really going to be a case study in how to prevent things from getting so crazy in the future and there's actually a senate transportation committee that's going to be going through all of that with a fine tooth come. >> we'll see what comes out of that. anne makovec live in fremont, thank you. our exclusive kpix 5/surveyusa poll shows 73% of people right here in the bay area believe syria's guilty of that chemical attack but only 29% are in favor of air strikes. 23% say the united states should take no action. 39% say we should offer support only. despite what those polls show, though, the white house is moving forward with its plans to gain support from congress to strike syrian military targets. as wendy gillette reports, president obama hopes to drum up international support while overseas. >> reporter: a key senate committee could vote as early

days but temperatures will turn around. as we head in towards the weekend, some places will be getting hot outside. otherwise, patchy fog at the coast and inside the bay of temperatures in the 50s and the 60s. this afternoon a whole lot of sunshine again, and similar temperatures to yesterday, 80s inland and sunshine and mild conditions inside the bay with a lot of 60s and 70s, sun and clouds toward the coastline. low pressure off the coastline, temperatures slow to warm up over the next couple of days. but as long as it remains here it will keep the temperatures down a bit. near seasonal temperatures for now and high pressure builds in and temperatures heat up on the weekend. right now 89 sacramento. high country smoke and hot. 69 degrees in monterey bay today. south bay temperatures soaring into the 80s in many spots there. 70s toward mountain view and milpitas. 60s toward the coastline. 80s in the interior valleys in

beginning to build coming up over the altamont pass. your latest travel times. we'll give them to you coming up. good morning, everyone. it's wednesday, september 4. i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. it is 5:30. and we begin with some developing news overnight. a woman tried to save her neighbor trapped in a burning travel trailer but couldn't get her out in time. kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran is gathering more information from the scene. she is in san leandro, joins us now live with the latest. cate. >> reporter: frank, that woman says the flames really were just too overwhelming for her and the other neighbors who tried to save the elderly woman who lived inside. you can take a look right now. there are still firefighters, investigators here on scene trying to assess the area right here taking a look at that travel trailer you see here. the woman we spoke to says she came here after she smelled smoke, even spoke to the woman she says lived inside that travel trailer. >> so are you okay? i don't know who she is. she said, no, i'm not! >> reporter: now, those

neighbors struggled to try and help the woman inside. they looked for garden hoses, anything to try to put out the flames. unfortunately, they say, all the doors were locked and that woman that we spoke to says the victim is a disabled woman and was trapped inside. she told us that she and her son thought they were helping when they tried to break open the windows. >> my son came out and neighbors came out we were break the windows, and everything else, and it was just a little bit of smoke. and all of a sudden, it went up to a big, big smoke. big fire. >> reporter: alameda county fire says this started right around 3:35 this morning. they knocked out the fire quickly but they were not able to safe the person inside. -- they were not able to save the person inside. they first saw smoke in the back but firefighters don't know how it started. that's whatter their doing right now. they're still here on scene taking a look trying to comb through the ashes. we saw them inside that travel trailer looking for evidence that might give us an indication as to how this fire

started. neighbors told us this woman who lived here was a hoarder but firefighters could not confirm this but they did tell us there was quite a bit of stuff inside making it very difficult for them to fight these flames. reporting live in san leandro, cate caugiran, kpix 5. some developing news out of ohio this morning where kidnapper ariel castro has died every the apparent suicide. guards found him in the prison last night. castro was pronounced dead at the hospital about an hour and a half later. last month castro was sentenced to life plus 1,000 years in prison for kidnapping three young women and raping them in a child home for nearly a decade . >> castro was taken off suicide watch in early june. since then he had been in protective custody and was checked by guards every 30 minutes. happening today, the same

jurors who convicted serial killer joseph naso has his sentencing hearing this morning in san rafael. naso was found guilty of killing four women in northern california in the late 1970s and early 1990s. president obama is in sweeten. he will meet with leaders from other -- in sweden. he will meet with leaders from the area and will meet with leaders in st. peter'sburg, russia. the senate foreign relations committee in washington could vote on authorizing military action against syria. bay area representatives aren't on board just yet. they have written to the national security advisor asking a series of questions

caldecott tunnel bringing conshohocken relief in the off peek direction between alameda and contra costa county. emergency monitoring and response systems included in the tunnel traffic could be moving through by the end of the month. this could cost up to $7 billion when it's all finished. we'll talk about the high- speed rail coming up in the next half hour. >> how about the barred extension? when do they hope to finish it in right now they are saying 2018 but they might have that

coming needs to pass a spending bill before october 1. today the federal reserve will release its latest assessment of the economy and major automakers are starting to post their august sales numbers. hotels are trying to get you to stay a little longer. but not just in their rooms, in their lobbies. lobbies are more often transforming into places to work, hang out with friends or have a drink. many hotel chains like marriott, starwood and hyatt are spending buildings to make their lobbies more user- friendly to translate into more alcohol sales and hopefully to entice people to pay more for rooms. frank and michelle? >> there's always a catch. >> yes. >> i understand there's a big auto recall to tell us about, too. >> reporter: toyota is recalling 370,000 vehicles for two issues. 200,000 for a hybrid system problem, another 169,000 may have an issue with an engine bolt. there are no reported accidents linked to either problem. back to you guys. >> thank you, wendy gillette of cbsmoneywatch.com.

it is 5:44 now. firefighters are making good progress against the "rim" fire all evacuation orders have been lifted. the fire burning in and around yosemite national park is now 80% contained. they made great progress and started 19 days ago and torched nearly 370 square miles. thousands of people in tuolumne and mar most sa counties were allowed back home finally yesterday. still no official cause but investigators believe people on a big illegal pot farm somehow may have started the fire. many worried the fire and smoke threatened the hetch hetchy for more than 2 million people in san francisco and on the peninsula for their water supply but yesterday we got an all-clear. time now 5:45. let's get a check on the roads with elizabeth. how's it looking? >> it's looking great. we don't have any major hot spots out there now. they did turn on the metering lights on the bay bridge. we'll talk about that in a minute. first a live look at the south

bay 101 near mckie. you see it definitely starting to get crowded in those northbound 101 lanes. the commute has definitely begun. here's a live look at traffic sensors through the altamont pass. westbound 580 begins to build out of tracy and continues past vasco road now. once you get closer towards the dublin interchange we are problem-free. if you are traveling along the peninsula, this is what it looks like pretty close to candlestick. no delay. 101 and 280 are both moving at the limit and checking the golden gate bridge and the richmond/san rafael bridge, actually it's a nice loop all the way around through marin county, southbound 101 all in the green this morning. so yeah, i was going to say that the bay bridge wasn't quite as backed up at this time yesterday since -- or this time today as we saw yesterday but they just turned the metering lights on at 5:44 this morning. so right now you can see some of the delays beginning to build but not too bad right now. it is starting to get a little crowded up the incline. we were relatively problem-free yesterday maybe slightly bigger backups than what we're used to but for right now we're just

seeing those delays begin. mass transit great options. no problems on bart, ace, muni and caltrain. that's the latest "timesaver traffic." for more on your forecast, here he is, here's lawrence. >> starting out with some patchy, dense fog this morning, visibilities down to about a quarter of a mile in the napa valley, half a mile into santa rosa. so if you are stepping outside right now, still some fog to contend with early on this morning but by the afternoon becoming mostly sunny. these temperatures going to be very nice in the afternoon, mild inside the bay, warm in some of the valleys but much warmer weather is on the way as we look toward the weekend. so we have some changes in the works. this area of low pressure very slow to move and it looks like going to be hanging out the next couple of days so that will hold the temperatures down and that means the numbers going to be near seasonal for the next couple of days but after that, it changes. high pressure starts to build in these numbers are really going to start to warm up on friday and into the weekend. we do have some clouds this morning, some possible delays at sfo but by the afternoon should be sunny and bright about 73 degrees. around the country, a couple of possible places where you could see some delays into houston,
