[ laughter ] the mystery behind a barge out on the bay just grows. all we know is looks like a floating construction project belongs to google. kpix 5's brian webb in an exclusive report got up close to investigate. reporter: we shove off for treasure island, destination the mysterious floating google barge and the secrets that lie within. something even san francisco's own mayor admits he has no idea about. >> no, they kept the secret from me, as well.

>> reporter: as we cruise up, almost close enough to touch, you can see cargo containers stacked four high with dark netting at one end on a barge some 250 feet long. theories range from a floating data center, retail store, a super secret laboratory, all the way to a floating paintball arena. the crew says they did some work on the project but are sworn to secrecy so we found our own expert an architect whose designed projects using shipping containers and building on water. >> at this scale for a floating structure it's the first i have heard of. >> reporter: joe says cargo containers are functional, cheap and by building on water, you're out of reach of many regulations. he thinks the theory of a data center cooled by sea water is interesting but his money is on a floating google shopping center. >> they wouldn't be doing something so visibly public with so much secrecy if they didn't want some kind of

private, the crowd stayed and parade for a child who could have been their own. >> this has to stop. no more. >> reporter: andria borba, kpix 5. >> yesterday more than 1,000 people marched to the sheriff's office in santa rosa to protest the killing of andy lopez. another march is planned in downtown santa rosa this afternoon. a california lawmaker wants to reintroduce a bill now requiring all toy guns to look like toys. state senator kevin deleon on the left originally made the proposal back in 2011. he wants fake guns to be translucent or brightly colored like that one. the nra and some toy companies fought the proposal. it never passed. ben tracy asked deleon about that. >> i imagine the people who make these toy guns say the point is for them to look real and no one wants a gun that's bright pink, yellow or orange. what do you say to that? >> we're talking about children's lives. we're talking about lives that have been cut short,

santa clara valley's best known creeks. a mile stretch of stevens creek in cupertino and sunnyvale, it's bone dry now and kiet do reports a lot of fish are dying as a result. reporter: hike down into stevens creek in sunnyvale and you'll see it doesn't look like much of a creek at all. >> as of last friday, we had no creek. >> reporter: he has lived next to the creek for 19 years. last week, he was shocked to see this. steelhead trout dead after a dried-out section of creek. it's a threatened species. 100 carcasses were mixed in with other fish and crawdads. it's a seafood bonanza for the birds and racoons. you're saying this turns into a raccoon buffet? >> raccoon and herons. >> reporter: it's happened suddenly. there's water in this photo taken october 19. and this is what it looks like nine days later. the santa clara valley water district has been releasing

water into the creek from local reservoirs but it's vanishing. >> it's been a dry year. we had been keeping the water going to fremont avenue and expected national water would continue to flow there so it's a little un-- we just don't know what happened. >> reporter: but he hiked the creekbed and found 29 dried-out pools and says if nothing is done, remaining pools could be lost. >> i don't consider myself an emotional person but after getting into that hike the other day, it was pretty sobering. it was sad. >> reporter: the water district says they will be cracking open a valve about a mile and a half up the creek that water will come from the delta and it will take some time for the fish to repopulate this area. in sunnyvale, kiet do, kpix 5. >> there's a possibility that water being pumped at two sites upstream is to blame. the valley water district has ordered a reduction of that pumping while it investigates. the window opens friday for the mavericks surf contest near half moon bay. the world's best big wave
