>> you see it everywhere. it's in tvs, ads, everything. the at sign and hashtag sign is ubiquitous. it's the biggest social media ipo since facebook and while mark zuckerberg's baby didn't break big the first time, experts say it's recent recovery and growth was a big cue for twitter to take a stroll on wall street. >> these events are really important because they set the mood and benchmark for other companies and when facebook had so many problems, after that, companies weren't getting funded the same. there was a sense that, oh-oh, companies aren't going to go public again so it took a lot of time. >> reporter: contract net's paul sloan says twitter took a lesson from facebook's failure and investors took notice. twitter is taking its business to the new york stock exchange valued higher than facebook despite the fact that the company is not making any profits. but once twitter goes public, sloan says management will have to make thanks that could trickle down to the app on your phone. >> you'll probably see all kinds of experiments going on

with different types of ads because the reality is, when you're public, you have to make money eventually and you have to show growth not just with users but in dollars. >> reporter: coming up in the next half hour, we are going to hear from kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks on hour twitter measures up to facebook and the challenges the social media site will face once it goes public. reporting live in san francisco, back to you in the studio. >> the company is offering 70 million shares in the ipo. if all shares are sold it will raise more than $2 billion. let's get a look at the roads now with liz. what's going on? >> back out to oakland, we have learned that the coroner just arrived on scene. early this morning, there was a fatal accident involving a pedestrian that ran out into the roadway, was hit and killed on westbound 580 on macarthur boulevard. the backups are relatively minimal fleet at least for this time of the morning jammed towards seminary but if the lanes continue to be blocked we don't have an estimated time of

opening. it could cause further delays. consider using the nimitz freeway, looks good from san leandro and a quick update on the bay bridge commute where they just switched on the metering lights. now the cash and fastrak lanes are stacking up quickly. that is your latest "kcbs traffic." for more on your forecast, here's lawrence. >> all right. if you are stepping outside right now, a lot of clouds moving overhead but that's actually making for mild conditions out the door right now. but what a change just from yesterday as high pressure is sliding eastward meaning cooler temperatures on the way. out the door we go, looking toward the bridge, low clouds over the bridge and some high clouds above, as well. with that in mind it looks like the temperatures staying mild early on this morning. 40s even some upper 50s into san francisco but by the afternoon, these temperatures slightly cooler than yesterday. still, low to mid-70s in much of the east bay a lot of 60s and 70s around the bay and 50s and 70s towards the coastline. developing news now.

the deaths of two transit men on bart tracks are putting the spotlight on employee safety issues at bart. today a state assembly committee will look into that accident. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec joins us with more. >> reporter: there was' memorial here for weeks. that is now gone but what happened here is not forgotten and it is going to be put under the microscope today by the state assembly committee on labor and employment. we're going to hear from bart workers and management. two bart workers were hit and killed by a train on october 19. they were on the track under what's called simple approval. basically, the understanding that you're responsible for your own safety provided no protection from trains and given no advance warning of approaching trains from bart. another worker died in 2008 also while working under "simple approval." bart was cited for that but continues to challenge that citation. interestingly enough, today's hearing was actually scheduled

before those two bart workers were killed last month. michelle and frank? >> anne, where does the federal investigation stand now? >> reporter: the national transportation safety board is continuing to investigate what happened here. that is going to be going on for the next several months. bart managers say that they are under strict orders from the ntsb not to talk specifics about that accident at this hearing. so it is going to be mainly based on this simple approval process. but obviously this is a large part of that. >> absolutely. okay, anne makovec live for us in walnut creek. thanks, anne. a sunnyvale mother and her two-week-old baby could be reunited today. two days after the newborn was taken from the bay area down to mexico, police say that henry guler-romero's dad kidnapped him tuesday after an argument with the mother despite a statewide amber alert 22-year- old mesut guler made it across the border into mexico. mexican police arrested him. the baby was apparently taken after an argument between his

parents. >> apparently there was a disagreement as to him wanting to move to new york and the mother did not want to move to new york and that's what precipitated the abduction from what we have gathered at this point. >> the baby is said to be in good health. still no word on when he might be reunited with his mother. pandora is staying put in oakland. the internet radio giant will unveil a new sign on a downtown headquarters today. pandora has been based in oakland from the start. the company says the sign is meant to show its commitment to the city. a new lawsuit will be filed today in the effort to keep city college of san francisco open. the save ccsf coalition will go to court this morning. the suit is aimed at blocking the recent decision to drop accreditation for the school. the san francisco city attorney filed a similar suit in august. ross william ulbricht the san francisco man web made his first court appearance in new

york yesterday. the 29-year-old was arrested last month. he is dread pirate roberts, police says the mastermind behind the website silk road that did more than $1 billion in illegal transactions. his lawyer says investigators have the wrong man. menlo park police looking for a witness in a dui accident that killed two people. it happened last month at chilco street. 54-year-old marjorie reitzell was allegedly drunk when she struck and killed a couple walking their dog. officers are looking for a white man driving a white ford explorer. they believe that man may have witnessed the accident. police are trying to determine if a hate crime charge could apply in the case of a bus passenger who was set on fire in oakland. investigators say 18-year-old luke fleischman was wearing a skirt when someone lit him on fire. police arrested a 16-year-old suspect on tuesday. it could be determined as soon as today whether he will be tried as an adult. >> can't even fathom what would be going through their head

when they do it. it saddens me incredibly. >> fleischman, who also goes by the female name of sasha, is hospitalized. he is in stable condition at this hour. he identifies himself as "agender," neither male nor female. the san jose police department is getting dozens of detectives out of their offices to make up for a shortage of officers on city streets. a total of 78 officers most from the detective bureau have been temporarily reassigned to patrol duty. the program known as flexcar is designed to reduce response times for emergency calls. san francisco mayor ed lee wants muni riders to put their phones down and pay attention. in september a man waved a gun inside a muni train and no one noticed because passengers were glued to their phones. that man later went on to shoot and kill a san francisco state student. city leaders are kicking off a new campaign today called eyes up, phones down.

60s but 50s and 60s out toward the coastline. next few days the temperatures cooling off with a few more clouds coming our way. we have pushed the rain back just a little bit so i think veterans day now looks dry but a chance of showers does continue on tuesday. >> all right, lawrence, thank you. a bay area couple wants girls in africa to get the same education as the boys so they moved to kenya and started a school. and now four years later it's graduating its first class with the help of local students. daraja academy is this week's "cool school." reporter: after visiting kenya when he was 12, jason doherty fell in love with it and knew his future would be in africa. years later he and his wife decided to start a school there. >> my wife and i went there two years in a row and really saw, wow, the girls are the ones getting the shortened of the stick here. >> reporter: a kenyan family will often send a son to school if there's enough money and daughters some as young as 13 would be married instead. so they started a school in

2009 a four-year boarding school for high school aged girls with an intense curriculum. >> they come from nothing. and they now know that they have that in them to do whatever they put their head into and they will. >> reporter: everything from their education, school supplies and uniforms is free. they even get their food from the school's garden. >> i will become an important lady in my community and also in my country, kenya. >> reporter: the school only exists because of donations. some being raised half a world away. drake high school in san anselmo is one of seven schools with a daraja club so far raising $20,000 for girls they have never met. >> being like a girl myself and seeing like how much i have, how much i take for granted every day, seeing them and how they like what their lives would look for that went to -- what their lives were before they went to daraja. these girls are so worthy and incredible and it's really rewarding to me and i'm proud

shares are priced at 26 >> the social media company makes its wall street debut in what could be the biggest ipo of the year. shares are priced at $26 each for the tech giant based right here in san francisco. >> kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran is at twitter headquarters in san francisco. cate, financial analysts are expecting big things from twitter. >> reporter: michelle, in fact, if all 70 million shares are sold today it means the ipo would raise more than $2 billion making it the biggest ipo for an internet company since facebook at $16 billion. twitter may be a fifth the size of social media giant facebook but financial experts say it's worth more. >> the key for investors is long term. and if they keep moving the revenue in those big double- digit increments year owe-year, the profits will start to grow. >> reporter: the company isn't anticipated to make money until 2015 and reported a loss of more than $64 million in september and slowing user growth.

kcbs radio's financial reporter jason brooks says what twitter lacks in profit makes up for in potential. >> they are hiring more employees putting money into their marketing, research and development, buying other companies to amplify their own technology. >> reporter: twitter's challenges will still be the same as facebook. after today management will have some new bosses on wall street to answer to. >> every move is going to be analyzed an scrutinized by everybody out there. and that's going to determine their valuation on a daily basis. and it could take a while for them to adjust to that. in a lot of cases it takes a company about a year to make that transition successfully. >> reporter: now, brooks says it isn't just investors keeping a close eye on today's ipo but other smaller social media contenders like snapchat and pinterest who could be making the same move in the near future. live in san francisco, cate caugiran, kpix 5. i'm anne makovec live in walnut creek at the site where two bart workers were killed

last month. that was october 19. and that accident is going to be a hot topic today at a committee meeting for the -- [ pause ] -- senate committee or an assembly committee, rather. it is going to be the topic of that hearing. the committee on labor and employment. specifically they are going to be talking about a procedure known as simple approval where workers are not guaranteed any warning of oncoming trains. one is a lookout. they are responsible for their own safety. bart won't answer questions about the accident at the hearing but we got an advanced copy of the testimony prepared for bart's chief safety officer who said, do we have a safety culture? yes, we do. safety is every manager and employee's responsibility. can bart improve on the safety culture that we have? absolutely. interestingly enough, today's hearing was scheduled before

that october accident. live in walnut creek, anne makovec, kpix 5. lawrence has some incredible video of a meteor down in southern california. >> folks were checking out the skies. everybody has cameras now so reports of what could have been a meteor shower are coming in from southern california. in san fernando valley you can see the bright growing ball appearing to be falling toward the earth and disappear. the report of an exploding into pieces and then just vanishing. so yeah, keep your eyes on the sky. it could be very interesting as that meteor shower will continue. low clouds toward the coastline. and yeah, a little fire in our sky there off in the distance as the sun is coming up now. it looks like it will be a cooler day ahead thanks to clouds. temperatures are running on the mild side this morning because of those clouds in the upper 40s and even upper 50s into san francisco. this afternoon, we'll keep

these numbers slightly cooler than yesterday but slightly above the average. highs today about 74 degrees in livermore. 64 in san francisco and about 73 in san jose. let's check out your "kcbs traffic" with elizabeth. >> now that that traffic alert is canceled in oakland everything looks good. we are watching a couple of fender-bender. it's not causing any big delays though, that's the good spot so southbound 880 approaching hegenberger, it sounds like there is an accident there. couple of cars involved. it may be on the shoulder. no backups out of oakland. southbound 880 a crash approaching lewelling. the accident causing slowdowns past the accident scene. south carolina 880 closer to 92 where it usually slows down approaching the san mateo bridge. this was our problem spot since 4:45 this morning weather we had that fatal crash involving a pedestrian. chp tells us a woman ran out into the freeway was hit and killed. westbound 580 approaching macarthur boulevard, the delays never got terribly bad. backed up to keller right now

but again, all lanes are open. the flares have been picked up. towards the bay bridge, everything typical this time of the morning stacking up towards the foot of the maze. that is your "kcbs traffic" report. back to you guys. >> thank you. an additional 45,000 people are expected that jam the crowded roads around palo alto tonight both on 280 and 101. all heading down the peninsula to see stanford take on oregon in what's expected to be an epic pac-12 game which could shape the national title game, as well. and getting there could prove to be the biggest challenge of all. you can pretty much forget about buying a ticket for tonight's game against oregon. it is officially sold out although this woman told us off camera that she was able to buy standing-room-only tickets for 90 bucks. and demand has driven up prices on the resale market to ridiculous levels. >> it's the rose bowl for us. if we win it, we go to the rose bowl more than likely. and if we lose it, we don't. >> reporter: but this game is being played at 6:00, right in the heart of the evening

give the company initial market cap of $14 billion. word going in is demand was extremely high. the company decided to price its shares a little under that in order to get that nice first day pop. take a look at the board right now. twitter is still not trading yet. we'll let you know if it happens in the next 30 seconds. good news on the economy lifting the stock market again this morning. commerce department reports that the gross domestic product in the 3rd quarter rose 2.8% stronger than expected thanks to stronger consumer spending. also, labor this morning reporting that first time weekly unemployment claims fell by 9,000 to 336,000 and the four-week average also pulling back just a little bit. the key october jobs report comes down tomorrow. the dow started today at another record high, 33rd record close this year. blue chips up 47. nasdaq up 3. s&p also up by 3. twitter still not trading yet. michelle and frank, back to

you. >> thank you, jason brooks from kcbs news. today could be a big day for gay rights. all 55 democrats in the senate and several republicans are expected to vote yes on a bill that would make it illegal for employers to discriminate against gay bisexual and transgender workers but don't expect the same in the republican led house. speaker john boehner says the legislation will create costly frivolous lawsuits. vice president joe biden set out to congratulate marty walsh after winning the boston mayoral race. he called the wrong marty walsh who is the president of government relations firm. the vice president was not the only one to make the same mistake. walsh received congratulations from several prominent democrats, as well. former palestinian leader yasser arafat may have been fatally poisoned. a number of scientists studied soil and bone samples. they found traces of polonium 210 a deadly radioactive

trough beginning to dig in along the west coast ushering in clouds and showers in far northern california. for us, though, more clouds and some cooler temperatures over the next few days. and want to show you this typhoon. this is a super typhoon that's just making landfall in the philippines. we just got an update on the storm system. get this -- sustained winds of 190 miles per hour. this is a monster storm! gusts now up to 230 miles an hour. i had contact early on with some folks in the central philippines. that has since gone away now. i suspect the power is out. they are seeing very heavy rainfall. now the winds will whip along the coastline. expected to make landfall on leyte island. they could see a storm surge of, get this upwards of 20 feet, maybe more. it's going to be a devastating storm system rolling across the central philippines for today. around the bay area, we are looking at temperatures with partly cloudy skies in the 60s and the 70s. next couple of days, those temperatures will be dropping off right on in through the weekend. we moved the chance of rain back to tuesday.

glitches. instead, twitter took its business to the new york stock exchange valued higher than its social media rival. they may be worth more but experts say twitter will still have the same challenges ahead. >> every move is going to be analyzed and scrutinized by everybody out there. that's going to determine their valuation on a daily basis. it could take a while for them to adjust to that. in a lot of cases it takes the company about a year to make that transition successfully. >> reporter: now, there's one san francisco neighborhood not happy about twitter going public. residents in the tenderloin are protesting outside headquarters. their purpose, call attention to corporate tax breaks and the role that tech companies play in the eviction crisis. now, back out live, you can see those protestors still there chanting outside of twitter headquarters. as far as profit and twitter's concern going back to the ipo, experts i spoke to say yes, the microblogging site isn't making money but what it lacks in profit right now makes up in
