good e n >> screaming, pushing, fighting, even someone getting tased all part of the black friday madness all over the country. good evening. i'm allen martin. >> i'm elizabeth cook. most of the bay area was a mad house as shoppers headed to the mall. this is valley fair mall in san jose. many shoppers told us it was worth it to get up early, but not everyone was civil. this is in pennsylvania where a woman used a taser on another woman during an all out brawl inside a mall outside philadelphia, no word on whether anyone was arrested. in texas more trampling over $78 tvs at a wal-mart. some pushing turned to shoving and police pinned at least one woman down. the customer who bought the video said he was in buying cough drops when he pulled out

his phone and captured that commotion. a standoff at a southern california shopping center ended an hour ago with a suspected robber taking his own life according to the los angeles county sheriff's department. it started after 4:00 this afternoon. witnesses say that the man had robbed a pharmacy, then barricaded himself in a verizon store. no one was inside the store, but the shoppers were evacuated from the shopping center, no one else hurt. 140 million people are predicted to shop this weekend. the national retail federation thinks holiday sales will go up nearly 4% this year to $602 billion. last year sales were up 3.5%. online sales are projected to go up even more this black friday. ibm digital benchmark predicts a 9.7% increase from last year, 21% of that coming from people shopping on their smartphones. others want to spend their cash

at local businesses. we have the story from jacqueline square with a different kind of shopping center. >> reporter: oaklanders call it plaid friday to represent the diversity of all the independent shops here. shoppers are encouraged to spend on local businesses. forget the flat screens and fistfights of black friday. this is oakland's own version of the day after thanksgiving sales. they call it plaid friday. >> we specifically wanted to do plaid friday. we don't do the black friday thing. >> reporter: a shop drag decision that urges oaklanders to ditch the door busters and make a statement shopping local and independent. >> it's a statement that you support your city, you support the artisans here working every day to try to really bring some positive attention to the city of oakland. >> definitely the smaller shops here in oakland need our support. >> reporter: downtown oakland has sometimes struggled to keep business here. empty store front once littered the stretch where this shop

originated in oakland but has now spread all over the country. there were plaid fridays today in vermont, massachusetts and even canada. >> black friday became protest -- black friday became protest friday at wal-marts nationwide. in california more than two dozen were arrested in the protests, five at the san leandro store. activists accuse the retail of paying poverty wages. workers say they barely get more than minimum wage. the company says the average employee makes a little more than $13 an hour. >> we're trying to bring awareness to the customers and management to let them know that the pay is really low and it's hard to make a living in california. >> we pay in the top half of retail. our industry offers the opportunity for people to enter at really any life stage from 16 to 76 if they would like to and then they work hard and they can build a career. >> it's estimated protests took place at 1,500 wal-mart stores

nationwide. even santa claus took part in one of the protests and he is one of those led away in handcuffs. the protests are part of a group that took over an intersection outside a southern california wal-mart. wal-mart employs 1.2 million people. we managed to get through black or plaid friday, but before you hop online for cyber monday there's a new push for people to think globally but shop locally on saturday. >> reporter: alice doyts is getting ready for tomorrow, the first time the city's downtown businesses are organizing to promote small business saturday. >> people start thinking where am a spending my money? and they know if you shop local, it stays local. >> reporter: small business saturday started in 2010 by american express as a way of drumming up holiday sales for local businesses.

in pacifica small retails are in the rock-away beach district have organized for small business saturday. christmas by the code's owner says it puts their store on the map. >> definitely one of the better days of the year and we've been here 18 christmases. >> reporter: next-door the owner of hoffman's fine wine and spirits says every day is critical for install retail. she hopes saturday's promotion is a gift that keeps giving. >> i'm hoping they'll come back because they'll remember us as a small unique little area. >> reporter: this year merchants marketed saturday with special door mats and reuseable bags and palo alto moved the date of its downtown tree lighting ceremony to coincide with small business saturday. the downtown promotion was news to this couple. >> no. we vanity even heard about it. >> i think it's a -- we haven't even heard about it. >> i think it's a good thing to help out small businesses. >> reporter: there are credits for american express card holders and others who mention

small business saturday. san francisco police are warning people to protect their valuables as they shop. officers handed out flyers in union square today. it comes as new numbers show crime in the step is at a five year high. nearly 46,000 crimes are reported from january 1st through october 31st. is, of course, is, of courseous track to see crime -- santa clara -- san francisco has seen crimes go up 23% this year. well, a grinch stole some priceless statues from in front of a home in a concord neighborhood. those statues were made by a young girl who later in life died in a crash. andrea borbis spoke to the homeowner and he simply wants those statues back. >> reporter: we're not talking about the david here, but for one concord family the statues taken from their front lawn were just as irreplaceable.

the sign outside this concord home is simple and heartfelt. >> it's sad at this time of year that someone would do that, you know. i mean what value could they to be someone else? >> reporter: these two gnomes are what the sign is talking about made by frank's daughter carolyn when she was 4. >> she was just a young girl at the time. her mother had a ceramic shop and she made them in the shop. >> reporter: and have been around the raffini family ever since. >> at christmas time we'd drive the lionel train and i'm responsible for one or two chips taken out of these things. >> reporter: carolyn died two years ago in a motorcycle crash and frank put the gnomes outside for the neighborhood to admire. you can see where the hedges began growing around them, but around halloween the pair walked away. so frank put up this sign to appeal to the thieves' sense of

humanity. >> whoever saw them, if they go by the house again and read the sign and maybe have some compassion in their heart. >> reporter: his odds aren't bad. his home is right across the street from the lighted mr. christmas house in concord. frank doesn't want to prosecute. he just wants a piece of his daughter back where they belong. >> i would appreciate very much if they returned them. there would be no hard feelings. i'm just interested in getting them back. >> i believe they'll be back. >> reporter: carolyn was not only a daughter but a wife and mother. her family would very much like that piece of her back in their front yard. live in concord, andrea borbis. a fremont neighborhood is on the lookout for a brazen burglar. this is a surveillance photo of the suspect. police say he broke into a home in warm springs tuesday, came in through a sliding glass door. what he did not know is a home security system was recording

workforce. among the biggest benefactors? women. >> reporter: just 3% of women working construction, but now there's an unprecedented opportunity to get more of them into the trade. the average male worker is 50 years old and getting closer to retirement. >> it had never occurred to me that i would want to be a carpenter. >> reporter: amy judd, a college graduate, picked up a hammer 15 years ago when she couldn't find a job teaching. >> it took me 80 swings to finally actually hit the nail, but when i did, that was my light bulb moment. >> reporter: the economy is expected to add nearly 200,000 carpenters by 2020. >> it'sis part of the problem a stigma that it's a man's job? >> of course.

replacing the silver security panel on the back of the card so you have no way to know it's been tampered with. as soon as you activate it, they spend the money via mobile app or online. >> we would love the retail stores to remove the cards from public access. >> reporter: but manufacturers tell us they won't move the cards behind the counter because customers like the easy access, but whether they're giving or receiving, customers tell us they don't like dealing with worthless gift cards. julie watts, kpix5. >> julie says the safest way to get a gift card is buy it directly from the retailer from behind the counter. you do buy a card from the mall kiosk, check the back carefully to look for signs of tampering. it's beginning to look a lot like christmas, especially at the white house. first lady michelle obama, her daughters and the family dogs received the official white house christmas tree this afternoon. it's an 18 1/2 foot douglas fir grown in pennsylvania.
