where speeds pick up to 30 miles per hour. it frees up through livermore on to the dublin interchange. altamont pass to 680 will take 15 minutes. nimitz freeway, looking good in both directions. 238 in san leandro to the made will take you 16 minutes. and a good commute across the span of the san mateo bridge as well from hayward into foster city. that will take you a quick 14 minutes. kenny, to you. hundreds of protests against the dakota access pipeline that will go from north dakota to illinois. some say it will damage the environment. kpix 5's anne makovec is live in san francisco to tell us more reporter: a lot of damage to sacred native american ground. so protestors are gathering here at civic center plaza in san francisco at 6:30 this morning to protest. this is part of a movement that's gaining momentum really

nationwide over the last several months. >> stand up, rise up, find your warrior spirit! [ native american screaming ] >> reporter: that's a protest in cannonball north dakota where demonstrators are camping out trying to prevent a pipeline to bring crude oil from north dakota down to illinois. the current route crosses a river close to the standing rock sioux reservation. members of the tribe are concerned that the pipeline could contaminate the water and land if it leaks. >> we are making a stand so several tribes have come to the aid with the lakota people and those who are fighting against the pipeline. >> reporter: that is one of many bay area native americans and their supporters joining the resistance by speaking out. so today's protest they are going to walk to the office of the army corps of engineers and that's where all of the 200

protests around the nation today are all heading specifically trying to campaign to the army corps of engineers which is making this decision on how this pipeline will be built. live in san francisco, anne makevoc, kpix 5. fremont police are looking for the suspects who reported shot a marijuana grower. a home invasion happened monday morning near fremont and delaware street. the house was a grow house and was full of plants. the suspect showed up at the house wanting plants or cash and shot the grower. >> i heard one lot pop and my wife said don't go out there. and so i was gonna go because i wanted to see what was going on. >> the man who was shot is expected to survive. police are looking for three men but say they were wearing masks so there are no suspect descriptions. the san jose police officers association is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the

gunman who opened fire at two sjpd officers sunday night on the city's east side near luby and ripley drive. the officers approached a group of men who then fled. investigators say that one of those men then turned around and shot at them. >> let me be very clear. these are not only police officers. these are fathers, brothers, mentors in our community and ultimately community members. and like everyone, they have families that they want to go home to safely at night. >> neither officer was hit and they did not return fire. the suspect is saw the for attempted murder of two police officers. it's time to find your favorite recipes for cooking crab. the commercial season starts today. kpix 5's jackie ward is live in san francisco on the test results that caused trouble in seasons past. reporter: good morning. it is great news.

it's news that makes me hungry! fresh dungeness crab from the bay area could be on your thanksgiving dinner table. and that's something we weren't able to say last year because of those high domoic acid levels so last season was hard on local fishermen. over 18 months, they had to deal with delayed crab start, then abbreviated season right in the middle of two bad chinook salmon seasons. the only speed bump they may face is the price. but if all went well, boats were out there first this morning and it's been busy here along pier 45 so i'm sure that's the case. i caught up with the recreational crabber about a week and a half ago. he liked what he was seeing in the water. >> right now, they are jumbos, nice three pounders. so we could be a little selective. take what you want, you know? then later in the season, you got to get a little pickier. >> reporter: the recreational crab season started on november 5 and ends today making way for the commercial crabbers to get in there. recreational crabbers were limited to 10 crabs per person and were strictly used for personal consumption.

bannon, his chief political strategist. the problem with donald trump, and one of the reasons that this town is having so much trouble figuring out how to react, is no one has any idea what locker room talk and what's reality. there have been signals that perhaps he didn't really mean it when he said he wanted to deport 11 million illegal immigrants. probably he didn't mean it when he said he wanted a religious test to disallow muslims from coming into the country. or that he would jail hillary clinton. but no one knows for sure what that means. so the establishment republicans in this town say, hey, of course he meant the tax cuts and the democrats say of course he meant the infrastructure spending. but no one has any idea on anything else. so the fights we are hearing about the transition team, those are normal and happens to every president. i don't remember an election where after a person has been elected there's so many people

sticks around it will affect your commute into san jose from northbound 17. moving over to the rest of the south bay commute 101 northbound 280/680 split to highway 237 will take you a quick 11 minutes. commute through downtown san jose on northbound 280 will take you 11 minutes between 101, 680 split to highway 85 and the guadalupe parkway looking good, as well. altamont pass off 205, 30 miles an hour at north flynn road. dublin interchange 580 westbound to 680 will take 16 minutes. bay bridge toll plaza, metering lights are off. we have some backup in the cash lane though. carquinez bridge along the eastshore freeway to the maze will take you 19 minutes. and once you get past the toll keep in mind there is a stalled car before treasure island blocking that left lane. roberta, i'll send it to you for the weather. >> thanks, roqui. good morning, everybody.

you eat crab that's south of point reyes, you're fine. but anything north of there, you still have to not eat it for a little while until probably december 1st is when state regulators are hoping that the crabs north of point reyes will be safe to eat. so the department of public health issued a warning and more testing on the acid levels has to be done before the inner organs of the crab from the north are deemed safe to eat so just stick to the claws and body meat not the guts. but crabs caught south of point reyes have been ruled safe. recreational crab season started november 5 and it ends today. they were catching 3-pounders so commercial crabbers are hoping they catch the same. the price per pound for crab is 7 going to be between 425 and 450. that hasn't been set yet. but that's the ballpark figure on the pier. so crab season starts today and it will go through june. from san francisco, jackie ward, kpix 5. the fight against the dakota access pipeline is coming to the bay area today.

opponents say it could cause damage to the environment. kpix 5's anne makovec reports from san francisco. >> reporter: it's going to be a passionate protest expected to start in less than an hour here at san francisco civic center plaza at 6:30 a.m. >> stand up, rise up, find your warrior spirit! >> reporter: this is a recent protest in cannonball, north dakota. that is where, um, people have been gathering since this summer. so today's protest here is going to be an extension of this protest. it will carry crude oil 1200 miles from north dakota to illinois. the standing rock sioux drive has a reservation nearby and are worried about environmental damage if the pipe leaks and clashes over the plan have

become violent. hundreds of people have been arrested with protests there and across the country. >> this is a fight that's going to continue. we're not going to back down. >> that's one of many bay area supporters joining to stop to fight the pipeline by speaking out. we have had several protests in the bay area including several arrests, as well. but the organizers are starting out with a prayer and say it will be peaceful. they are protesting in front of the army corps of engineers building later on this morning. they say there's no timetable for a decision on the pipeline. live in san francisco, anne makovec, kpix 5. we don't have as dense fog this morning as 24 hours ago but it's not as widespread, either. but nonetheless we have a couple of areas where you have issues with your visibility like the santa rosa area also

in napa. but take a look at this. it's our live hi-def doppler. not picking up rain here but look what is upstream. we have some beneficial rainfallle from garberville to fort bragg may make it as far south as point reyes and then that will be it. this is our time lapse and you can barely see the leading edge of the precipitation too far to the north and it's going to fall apart at the seams as it advances south. from the bay bridge east toward the port of oakland under mostly cloudy skies. mild temperatures into the 50s from 52 in santa rosa to 59 now redwood city under a mostly cloudy sky, a few sunny breaks, fog lifts, temperatures into the 60s at the immediate seashore. 60s common around the peninsula through to atherton and pescadero. cupertino 68. 70 morgan hill. low 70s gilroy. we'll reach up to 70 in

brentwood, tracy, oakley, discovery bay and mountain house. but the closer you get to the rim of the water, temperatures top off in the mid-60s. 63 bodega bay. we'll pick up an afternoon wind in stinson beach in the low 60s so mostly cloudy in the north bay. if you see anything at all maybe a sprinkle. maybe a passing shower. but no accumulation anticipated. and in the cloverdale area as well as in lakeport you, too could see the possibility of a light rain shower but no accumulation. we do have a bigger rain event. it is slated to move in by the weekend. we'll check that next time around. right now, here's roqui. >> good morning. it is 5:35. we have an update on that santa cruz mountains crash but first, let's take a look at our morning hot spot at the altamont pass. 205 tracy, nine miles per hour. speeds pick up at north flynn road at 30 miles per hour. north tracy boulevard to the altamont pass on westbound 580 will take you up to 48 minutes

into livermore where traffic frees up a bit but here's a live look at the dublin interchange. 580 westbound to 680 will take you 16 minutes. moving to the bay bridge toll plaza those metering lights are officially on. that traffic is backing up towards the maze now. 15-minute drive into downtown san francisco but there's a stalled car before treasure island blocking that right lane so that will affect the commute, as well. let's move over now to the santa cruz mountains and an update on this northbound 17 crash before redwood estates a two-car crash is off to the shoulder. we see some slowdowns in the area. you're moving at 34 miles per hour heading into san francisco from northbound 17. that's a look at your traffic. over to you, michelle. >> thank you. today the san jose city council will consider at least 3 plans to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour. the most ambitious would gradually raise the minimum to 15 bucks by january 2019. the other plans call for the

$15 goal to be reached by july 2019 or january 2020. the two latter plans also have exemptions, neighboring cities have already agreed to raise minimum wages to $15 by 2018 including sunnyvale. new this morning monterey police are looking for a man who tried to lure two children into his car. the siblings say the man tried to grab them yesterday afternoon while they stood in front of a library. but the children ran to a nearby school and told staff what happened. the suspect is described as a middle-aged man with long hair and a rose tattoo on his neck. more protests are planned today against president-elect donald trump. students from various high schools in marin county plan to walk out of class at 1:30 this afternoon and students at palo alto high school are also planning a peaceful march at 2:30. in the meantime president-elect donald trump is moving forward

and putting together his administration. rudy giuliani is a top pick for secretary of state. the former new york city mayor refused to discuss it at an event last night. >> he is a patriot. he loves america. he may have a different view of america than you. but he loves america as much as you or i do. >> many protests continued. protestors are angry over his immigration plan to deport millions of criminal illegal immigrants. cell phone video showing students getting in a fight at osu over their views about trump. one student was shoved down a flight of stairs last night and one student was arrested. we are told that the protest was organized by a socialist group on campus. no one was seriously hurt as the trump supporter was attacked. a principal is back at work today. phil morales seen here holding

a megaphone used the "f" word last week against president- elect trump last week. the superintendent put him on administrative leave. he principal apologized saying he used poor judgment. this morning, the journalism world is mourning the loss of veteran journalist gwen ifill a cohost of the pbs newshour. she died of cancer yesterday. both the president and attorney general loretta lynch have extended their condolences to her family. >> she was an especially powerful role model for females who admired her and she blazed the trail as one half of the first all female anchor team on network news. >> ifill was 61. with a great recession years behind us it's fair to ask, what did we learn from that? sadly, research suggests not much. cbs news business analyst jill schlesinger here to share the

findings plus steps that we can take to improve our financial know-how. so jill, what was the up shot? >> reporter: okay. this is according to an investment education foundation. just 14% of respondents were able to answer five financial literacy quiz questions correctly. 14%! only 37% answered at least four correctly. now, those results are slightly worse than they were in 2009. there was another odd finding. despite the poor results, people overestimated their financial knowledge. oh, i'm so smart! 76% of respondents gave themselves high marks but a fraction were able to do simple calculations involving basic financial concepts like interest rates, inflation and debt. >> so jill, next question, how can we improve these results? >> reporter: all we have to do

the park are in shock. >> you certainly don't expect it to happen and i certainly hope it's not related to anything because you are reading a lot about the backlash that's going on and i hope that's not what it is. >> police say that the nanny had some scratches but is okay. they arrested a suspect and are looking into whether this is a hate crime. san francisco supervisors are expected to vote today on stricter regulations for short- term rentals like airbnb. the proposal calls for a maximum of 60 nights a year for short-term rentals regardless of whether the host is on site. the current limit is 90 nights for unhosted rentals and there are no such limits for hosted rentals. there's a growing divide in a north bay town over what to do about deer. the growing population has some people in belvidere saying that

the roads are unsafe and yards are tramles. . >> we are talking about perhaps saying okay, replace them with eight-foot fences. well, who is going to pay for that and who is going to pay for it for the people who can't do that on their property? >> a representative from a local animal care organization suggests that city leaders focus only on high complaint areas for now. good news about a trio of cows in new zealand that has captivated the world. >> you may remember these guys were stuck on a small island of grass after the earthquake there caused landslides. helicopter footage shows the two cows and a calf surrounded by landslides but thankfully a farmer and his friends were able to come to their rescue. they got some shovels, called a few friends and the men dug a path for the cattle. none of the cows were injured during the ordeal. so i'm glad they got out okay.
