[ laughter ] >> okay. thank you. >> have patience. >> 14% bigger and 33% brighter. and i saw it in the mojave desert and it was huge because you had all that dark big sky. we were able to see it before the fog and clouds all associated with the weak disturbance to the north of us moved in here to the bay area. so that's where we kick-start your tuesday morning with our live hi-def doppler radar. no rain here. it's right there across the northwestern section of the state. that's trying to sag in a southerly direction. if we do see any rain it might be a far south as the point reyes area. that's about it. cloud cover over the city by the bay. we'll have mostly cloudy skies

nationwide over the last several months. >> stand up, rise up, find your warrior spirit! [ native american screaming ] >> reporter: that's a protest in cannonball north dakota where demonstrators are camping out trying to prevent a pipeline to bring crude oil from north dakota down to illinois. the current route crosses a river close to the standing rock sioux reservation. members of the tribe are concerned that the pipeline could contaminate the water and land if it leaks. >> we are making a stand so several tribes have come to the aid with the lakota people and those who are fighting against the pipeline. >> reporter: that is one of many bay area native americans and their supporters joining the resistance by speaking out. so today's protest they are going to walk to the office of the army corps of engineers and that's where all of the 200

5:06 am
it's news that makes me hungry! fresh dungeness crab from the bay area could be on your thanksgiving dinner table. and that's something we weren't able to say last year because of those high domoic acid levels so last season was hard on local fishermen. over 18 months, they had to deal with delayed crab start, then abbreviated season right in the middle of two bad chinook salmon seasons. the only speed bump they may face is the price. but if all went well, boats were out there first this morning and it's been busy here along pier 45 so i'm sure that's the case. i caught up with the recreational crabber about a week and a half ago. he liked what he was seeing in the water. >> right now, they are jumbos, nice three pounders. so we could be a little selective. take what you want, you know? then later in the season, you got to get a little pickier. >> reporter: the recreational crab season started on november 5 and ends today making way for the commercial crabbers to get in there. recreational crabbers were limited to 10 crabs per person and were strictly used for personal consumption.
5:07 am
now, not all crab are safe to eat. a lot of them are but coming up in the next half-hour we'll let you know where you should still stay away from. from pier 45 in san francisco, jackie ward, kpix 5. president obama's officially on his last overseas trip as commander-in-chief. he landed in greece and will meet with the president and prime minister. the white house says the main agenda for the trip is to reassure allies that donald trump is committed to nato and the trans-atlantic alliance. the president will head to germany and peru next. as for president-elect donald trump, sources told cnn there's been infighting among members of his transition team. the disputes reportedly involve key white house and national security posts and whether they should be filled by trump loyalists or establishment republicans. controversy continues over the choice of steve bannon. white nationalists have praised the selection of the former
5:08 am
breitbart news executive. >> what i think is frustrating is when you see so much news coverage on the issues that divide us following the election. i think that's irresponsible. >> meanwhile, former new york mayor rudy giuliani is reportedly a front-runner to become secretary of state. it's a week since donald trump won the presidential election. some people wonder what it means. for more insights we turn to our washington insider marc sandalow. good morning, marc. so let me ask you, is washington still in shock? >> reporter: shock and panic!! for many people in washington, not only has life been changed, many fear it will never be the same. this is a town that was shaken almost every institution whether it's, you know, the news media, you work for the department of interior, and you don't know if you're going to be working for sarah palin. you might be working for the department of education and not be clear whether that department will be in existence
5:09 am
a year from now. san francisco has a reputation for being the most liberal city in america. but one in 10 san franciscans voted for donald trump. in washington that number is about 1 in 25. about 4% of washington, dc voted for donald trump [chuckling] and i just saw some statistics from fitbit the athletic wear that measures people's sleep and apparently most of america lost something like a half-hour sleep election night. dc lost twice that. and losing an hour sleep, i -- i -- i -- i don't know anyone who lost that little in the last week. >> president-elect trump has made a few appointments and given an interview to cbs on sunday on "60 minutes." did these provide any insight into how he will be commander- in-chief? >> reporter: you heard the possibility of rudy giuliani being secretary of state and you heard about the steve
5:10 am
bannon, his chief political strategist. the problem with donald trump, and one of the reasons that this town is having so much trouble figuring out how to react, is no one has any idea what locker room talk and what's reality. there have been signals that perhaps he didn't really mean it when he said he wanted to deport 11 million illegal immigrants. probably he didn't mean it when he said he wanted a religious test to disallow muslims from coming into the country. or that he would jail hillary clinton. but no one knows for sure what that means. so the establishment republicans in this town say, hey, of course he meant the tax cuts and the democrats say of course he meant the infrastructure spending. but no one has any idea on anything else. so the fights we are hearing about the transition team, those are normal and happens to every president. i don't remember an election where after a person has been elected there's so many people
5:11 am
with questions. >> there's some confusion. there's also rumblings about democrats replacing nancy pelosi as their leader. what's the story on that? >> reporter: it's been 10 years since nancy pelosi became the speaker of the house and she is 76 and people say it's time for that generation to move on. she will be the democratic leader if she wants to remain there. it also would not shock me if sometime over the course of this next year she quits. >> thank you, marc sandalow. time now 5:11. the man convicted of [ indiscernible ] made famous on the show making a murderer, more on the case next. >> and bernie sanders on the late show last night his message to the american people following a tough election.

you eat crab that's south of point reyes, you're fine. but anything north of there, you still have to not eat it for a little while until probably december 1st is when state regulators are hoping that the crabs north of point reyes will be safe to eat. so the department of public health issued a warning and more testing on the acid levels has to be done before the inner organs of the crab from the north are deemed safe to eat so just stick to the claws and body meat not the guts. but crabs caught south of point reyes have been ruled safe. recreational crab season started november 5 and it ends today. they were catching 3-pounders so commercial crabbers are hoping they catch the same. the price per pound for crab is 7 going to be between 425 and 450. that hasn't been set yet. but that's the ballpark figure on the pier. so crab season starts today and it will go through june. from san francisco, jackie ward, kpix 5. the fight against the dakota access pipeline is coming to the bay area today.
