one lane in each direction right now. another round of storms is on the way. we have complete coverage this morning. good morning, i'm kenny choi. >> i'm michelle griego. let's check in with roberta for the forecast. >> rain until next wednesday. we'll have some occasional breaks. there's not one storm more powerful than the rest, just every, single day of rain will take effect. so if you have flooded before you will probably flood again. santa cruz mountains, there will be no improvement especially along highway 1. i'm really feeling for the folks in the big sur area. no one can get in and out and you can see, this is a very fast-moving front. take a look at the back side of it already exiting portions of the north bay. this is marching along, clipping along rapidly east bay. you have pockets of moderate to heavy rainfall in the east bay. san leandro certainly wet at this hour. look at the heavy rain now

around woodside into west menlo park into sharon park drive portola valley. meanwhile, across portions of the santa clara valley from park more to willow glen, you're hearing those raindrops on the rooftops. bird avenue into san jose, same. and then there is the santa cruz mountains getting blasted at this early hour. between now and next wednesday up to 9 inches of rain. peninsula having some hit-or- miss showers. we just had showers out of san francisco. this is live hi-def doppler radar. so it's actual rain as it's happening. mostly cloudy skies with areas of rain right now looking out towards the bay bridge, temperatures are in the 50s and 60s. the other side of the story is the very gusty winds 20 san francisco, sfo half moon bay, also 15 in antioch. we have the full forecast still coming up but right now the hardest working report they are in town, maria medina in san leandro! >> reporter: you know, roberta, you told us to go to the san leandro bart station because it would be raining and, of course, you are right. it is definitely raining here. and it is coming down hard as

we push into the rain over here. you know, this is great for california, right, because of the drought. but it is definitely inconvenient across our state. all these storms that we have had. over on highway 37 in novato, a three-mile stretch of that four- lane highway between highway 101 and atherton avenue remains closed. and we are learning that it won't open until february 25th next saturday and that's because that area is prone to flooding during heavy rains and king tides and crews over there, they are trying to raise that part of the highway five feet so a pretty heavy task ahead of them. now, back out here live again, slick roads and windy. to take a look at how this rain is affecting our traffic, we are going to send it to roqui. >> thank you so much, maria. thank you for braving the storm out there. all right. it is 5:02. let's take a look at our bay area roads starting with a new traffic alert. we have one here in oakland.

but let's take a look at the bay bridge first and see how you're moving into downtown san francisco. look at that rain. it's coming down as you saw on top of maria, as well. high wind advisory on top of the span so drive slowly. metering lights should turn on in about 30 minutes or so. moving to oakland for that chp issued traffic alert just a few minutes ago here, northbound 880 before broadway it's a jackknifed big rig so of course this is a big problem out there. it will take them30 minutes or more to get this cleared out of the roads. it's blocking the two right lanes causing traffic to move at just 4 miles per hour in the area. so we will definitely keep an eye on this for you as you head out the door. now let's move to scotts valley. highway 17 still down to only one lane in both directions because of that massive mudslide from last week still affecting our roadways today between vine hill and sugarloaf road. scotts valley to san jose just

8 miles per hour. to consider an alternate, take branciforte to vine hill road to get beyond some of those red arrows. let's move to mass transit. ace train only three and six are running today so of this reduced service after dealing with weather and flood-related issues. so train 3 in the morning and number 6 in the afternoon are the only ace trains running. then 6 a.m. ferry vallejo to san francisco is by bus. crews continue significant repair work on the lake oroville damaso water levels are now 26 feet below the emergency spillway. but 33-year-old evacuee cameron asbury is in far worse shape than before the crisis. his son has significant head injuries and a crushed skull after a it confrontation with a thief. a man stole cameron's pickup truck on sunday. the father and son followed him. they asked for the truck back. things got violent.

>> tell him just leave the truck, just jump out, leave the truck. we don't care about you. and he put it in gear and beelined right at him and ran him over. >> the butte county sheriff says there have also been incidents of looting in the past few days but crime has not been widespread. be sure to download our cbssf mobile weather app. get live weather radar and severe weather alerts sent to your phone. construction crews are trying to make sure a 2,000- pound slab of concrete won't fall from a high-rise. multiple buildings were evacuated yesterday by the 33 tehama construction site after crews saw the concrete was leaning from the 35th floor. one of the nine struts supporting the platform failed and made the slab unstable. repair work spanned nearly 6 hours. but inspectors have confirmed that the wall is shored up and now needs a permanent mend. >> they have concluded at this time that we have no imminent

danger to the public or the surrounding buildings or to any individual at this time. >> evacuation orders have been lifted for the surrounding buildings but still apply for 33 tehama. now, this is what the 33 tehama complex will look like once construction is finished. it will have 37 stories and be home to more than 400 luxury units. later today we should learn more about a deadly officer involves shooting in santa cruz. police were called to a home on chase street in october last year when 32-year-old sean [ indiscernible ] was making death threats. officers tried to arrest the suspect and he swung a rake at them. they said they trade to tase him and he wouldn't stop so they shot him. new details on the wife of the pulse nightclub shooter. lawyers have been wore working on noor salman's defense since july even though she wasn't indicted until january.

the defense is hiring a domestic abuse expert. that person is expected to testify on salman's behalf to explain she was in danger from her husband. she was arrested last month in dublin. she is accused of helping a terrorist and charged with obstruction of justice. on capitol hill today, u.s. senators won't be holding aplanned confirmation hearing for president trump's labor secretary nominee. that's because fast food executive andrew puzder withdrew his name from consideration yesterday. republicans had raised concerns over puzder's failure to pay taxes for five years on a former housekeeper who was undocumented. >> i believe that he made the right decision. >> i would hope that the next person who is nominated will be the subject of a lot better vetting. >> the development came just two days after the president's national security adviser michael flynn was forced to resign. flynn was criticized over conversations he had with a russian diplomat about

sanctions while president obama was still in office in december. israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu is meeting this morning with vice president mike pence. it comes after a meeting yesterday with president trump at the white house. president trump asked israel to hold back on building more jewish settlements on palestinian land saying it's not helpful to peace. the president also repeated his support for eventually moving the u.s. embassy from tel aviv to jerusalem. this morning, an undocumented worker in colorado is defying deportation orders. jeanette [ non-english name ] a mother of three has taken refuge inside this church in denver. she came to the u.s. more than 20 years ago. years ago she was convicted of a misdemeanor crime for using forged social security documents to stay employed. yesterday, a rally was held in support of her in front of i.c.e. headquarters. she did not show up for a scheduled meeting with agents out of fear of being deported. >> we recognize that that is

[ crying ] >> got to love that. some kayakers in scotland got a big surprise. a seal was following them for miles and then hopped on one of their kayaks. it stuck around long enough for some video and, of course, for some selfies. altamont pass 30 minutes p down to one lane between vine hill and sugarloaf so major delays on northbound 17 after that massive mudslide from last week still affecting our roads today and moving at just 7 miles per hour. so if you want to consider an alternate, you can take branciforte to vine hill road to get beyond the slow traffic. the storm is moving out way quicker than computer models ever suggested. bad news is, it's got a lot of precipitation associated with it. so it's leaving a lot of ponding on the roads. 5:16. live hi-def doppler radar, when you see the yellow and the oranges on your tv screen, that's some pretty moderate to heavy rainfall primarily in the east bay. look how rapidly the storm has already blown through the north bay leaving in its wake a scattered shower around marinwood. otherwise, we have the east bay getting hammered around 580/680 corridor making tracks in towards the tri-valley or out towards this dublin grade or if

you are heading 680 to the sunol grade heading into the silicon valley. it is a nasty morning commute. meanwhile, around the peninsula woodside, sand hill road, portola valley, willowbrook drive moderate to heavy downpours. it's raining, silicon valley san jose with some heavy rain through bird avenue into north first street. also east williams avenue. payne avenue pretty heavy rain. and pouring rain pounding rain and gusty winds around the santa cruz mountains. our live weather camera look towards the bay bridge from the transamerica pyramid where it's raining in san francisco but very lightly at this time. temperatures in the 50s and 60s but the other side of the story, the very gusty winds. south-southwest at 20 in san francisco. also at sfo, half moon bay, pretty windy around the rim of the bay this morning. 19 in pleasanton and also in san ramon. 16-mile-per-hour winds in the

napa area. red areas suggest flash flood watch and warning. red is the warning. the yellow is the watch. these are the levees. this actually is clear lake at lakeport, where it's pretty close to flood stage. yellow highlighted area happens to be -- we have that flash flood watch in effect for the auxilliary spillway of the oroville dam. we'll have to watch that very carefully over the next several days. eight or nine inches of rain could come by next wednesday. we are upping those rainfall totals. high surf advisory is in effect for some of the swells up to 20 feet. dave in napa this morning, he is our weather watcher, he picked up half inch of rain since midnight and again the system has already blown through the north bay moving quickly but a secondary storm will affect your big getaway friday and that's going to cause some big issues across southern california in the southland. futurecast shows a hit-and-miss scattered shower this afternoon. here's storm number 2 entering from the south lifting north. as it does, some powerful winds and some heavy amounts of rain on top of already saturated

soil. a lingering shower into your saturday. we have a winter weather advisory in effect for tahoe. let it snow! we are on storm through next wednesday. >> reporter: good morning. a break in the rain right now but a few minutes ago it was raining heart. but this is what the rain is leaving behind. we have ponding on the roads. now, as you know, when you drive out there, this is enough to hydroplane so be careful. although this ponding here is nothing. over on highway 37 in novato, between 101 and the atherton avenue gets flooded when there is heavy rain. so they are closing down that part of the highway. they are not going to re-open it until next saturday. and that's because crews are trying to prevent that area from flooding any more. they are trying to raise that highway by 5 feet. but back out here with this storm again, a little break in the rain. that's why my hair is dry. but i'm sure roberta will tell us that more rain is on the way

[chuckling] so keep those umbrellas and those rain jackets handy. live in san leandro, maria medina, kpix 5. >> and i still don't have my umbrellas in my car. what's going on? >> you're a wise woman because when it's so windy you don't want the umbrella. >> that's true. >> this is amazing. because this storm is stalled in the overnight hours. and then about 3:00 in the morning, it just picked up some speed and it's been clipping along and moving out faster than any of the computer models suggested. so it's just moving through very quickly. look at the north bay right now. most of the precipitation is already out of that area. showers still in marinwood and san rafael. eastern portion of our bay area, just slicing through that 580/680 corridor, making tracks towards 680, boy, that's a nasty commute to begin with. the sunol grade heading towards fremont into milpitas.

you toss some rain into that it's very slow. right there highway 35 into portola valley light precipitation. willow glen, minnesota avenue also curtner avenue, communications hill boulevard, you have some heavy rain. santa cruz mountains have been getting hammered all morning long. we are expecting up to 8 inches of rain there by next wednesday. so that's a whole lot of rain in a short amount of time. temperatures now in the 50s and 60s. the other side of the story today is the very gusty winds. out of the south-southwest at 20 in san francisco. along the peninsula into sfo, also half moon bay. 13 in hayward. 19 san ramon and pleasanton. gusty winds at the coast and around the rim of the bay but we have 16-mile-per-hour winds in vallejo and napa. once the system passes south by 9 a.m., this is scattered showers. but we'll have in effect still today flash flood watch in effect for the auxilliary spillway of the oroville dam. even though things are looking up, looking good, we are going

to see a lot of rain in this area through next wednesday. meanwhile, we have a high surf advisory posted for that yellow highlighted area which is our coastline. we have surf up to 15 feet, 20- foot breakers. sneaker waves and rip currents certainly possible. so again by this afternoon a scattered shower in the forecast. winds dial back out of the south 10 to 20 miles per hour. but we're already queuing up storm number 2. i'm going to talk about that, the timing and amount. first roqui. >> we cannot catch a break. it's 5:34. we have a traffic alert in oakland causing major delays for you commuters heading out to northbound 880 at fifth avenue. it's a jackknifed big rig blocking two right lanes there. so that backup all the way to fruitvale avenue moving at just 4 miles per hour. so give yourself extra time. northbound 880 in oakland, chp traffic alert means 30 minutes or more so i'm expecting it to

take a while to clear the jackknifed big rig. altamont pass, traffic moving at 17 miles per hour along the way. then up to 26 on north flynn road so slow here and if you are traveling in scotts valley of course here we have highway 17 only down to one lane in each direction still after that major mudslide from last week and this is between vine hill road and sugarloaf and we already have ver early-morning delays here. your moving at 5 miles per hour with a couple mile backup. use branciforte as an alternate to vine hill to get beyond some of the slow traffic. but otherwise, give yourself plenty of time to get through the area. ace train has been canceled the last couple of days. it's back in service with reduced service. only train number 3 this morning and train number 6 this afternoon are running. san francisco vallejo to san francisco ferry bus at 6 a.m. bart and muni on time. new this morning, a fire in

alameda county is now under control. it started at a home on tulsa street last night. when officials arrived they found a dryer was on fire in the garage. crews were able to get the flames under control before it spread to the house. no one was hurt. time for president trump to start over in his search for a secretary of labor. his nominee for that post fast food executive and drew puzder withdrew his name from consideration yesterday. republicans are growing concerns about his failure to pay taxes for five years on a former housekeeper who was not authorized to work in the u.s. u.s. senators had planned to hold a confirmation hearing for him today but now that won't be happening. today restaurant workers plan to stay home in cities across the country taking part in a day without immigrants. the goal of the social media- born grassroots movement is to show the importance of immigrants in american society. several restaurants are closing up to protest the immigration policies of the trump

administration as i.c.e. agents continue to deport illegal immigrants. >> we have people that they are part of the dna that they are working on golf courses, maybe owned by mr. trump himself, you know, restaurants and farms. >> according to the bureau of labor statistics, immigrants account for 7 million restaurant workers compared to 5 million native born. janet yellen finished her testimony before congress. cbs news business analyst jill schlesinger reports. let's starts with the numbers on retail sales and inflation. >> reporter: so good news on both. sales increased in january every category improved except auto dealers but sales tail off after the holiday. sales up 5.6% from a year ago. the government also reported consumer prices were up by 2.5%

from a year ago. why is that good news? because we were worried that prices were staying stagnant. that's bad for the economy. stagflation could happen, deflation. so we are happy to see that prices run and when we strip out food and energy, core prices are up by 2.3% in the past year. one little down beat note. hourly wages when adjusted for inflation, they fell in january. that's because higher gas prices hit us. over the last year we have seen wages become flat when you factor in inflation. but that's expected to actually change. it looks like the labor market is tightening up and we are starting to see some wage pressure. so hopefully we all get a raise this year. >> absolutely. i'm for that, as well. all right. so how might this impact the fed, jill? >> reporter: you know, when she testified before congress, janet yellen said every fed meeting is live. it means every time they meet they could raise interest race. i think a lot of people thought they wouldn't do anything. but if economic data continues to improve it really could

prompt the fed to act sooner than expected. in fact, maybe they raise rates faster and more frequently than previously thought. now, how does this impact you? hey, if you are a saver, you're rooting for the fed to raise rates. you want better interest rates on your savings and checking and cds, if you are a borrower, not great, rising interest rates means loan costs go up. so maybe you want to close loans more quickly. meanwhile, investors are basically saying they don't think a march meeting increase will happen. odds are less than 20%. they are looking at june as a possibility. one extra wrinkle in all of this, the president needs to fill three vacancies on the federal reserve board. that permanent board only has 7 members and three are missing. that means president trump could reshape monetary policy with these appointments. and to see what kind of big shake-up could occur at the fed you can go to jillonmoney.com. >> only two fed rate hikes in the past decade. jill schlesinger from new york

time 5:42. a slippery golden gate bridge, the rain is out of there. exiting the north bay. we are being "aversely" affected in other parts of the bay area. we are going to talk about storm number one and when it exits our region and storm number two, when it does enter the picture and the effect it will have on your holiday, all that coming up in four minutes. there may be a drug that makes dogs living longer without downsides. for now, the drug is used to help organ transplant recipients and cancer patients. but researchers think it has the potential to make dogs live longer. in a study of 24 dogs it appeared to reverse some measurings of cardiac decline without side effects. pet owners are excited. >> as a scientist and researcher i'd like to see hard data to see if i believe

in the area at just 5 miles per hour. give yourself plenty of time to get through. an alternate is branciforte all the way to vine hill road to get you beyond some of the slowdown. as you can see on the northbound side, traffic is moving but you are confined within the southbound side. give yourself extra time to get through highway 17 in scotts valley. i'll send it to you. >> all right, roqui. thank you. good morning, everyone. let's call on our live hi-def doppler. what we have happening right now is a very fast-moving cold front. it's already breezed through the north bay. in fact, as i zero in on that particular area you see that we do have some scattered showers in the passage of that front.

we do have some rain showers from yountville into napa. meanwhile taking a look at the eastern portion of our bay area, you know, 580/680 is nasty on a daily commute. you toss in a little bit of light precipitation, definitely slippery when wet. highway 280 out of baywood park this morning into burlingame we have rain falling. south bay you have seen some consistent rainfall for the past 30, 45 minutes from parkmore to willow glen san jose in the rose garden district. getting pounded in the santa cruz mountains. not buying a break at all around highway 1 capitola into big sur. ben lomond you have some rain showers also. mostly cloudy over san francisco but the pavement is wet. when this front passed through the north bay it dumped up to half inch of rain fast so there's ponding on the roads. temperatures are in the 50s and 60s. and boy, i know you heard it. might have woken you up. the very gusty winds. now out of the south-southwest at 20 san francisco, sfo half moon bay, pretty gusty around

the rim of the bay. still seeing some pretty aggressive winds in the pleasanton area where we had wind gusts up to 38 miles per hour. berkeley wind now at 19. 16 in the napa area. these winds will dial back with the passage of the front out of the south 10 to 20 miles per hour. red is warning. these are some of the levees especially in the south-central portion of sacramento valley that we're watching that are at flood stage already. this is clear to lake at lakeport. then the -- this is clear lake at lakeport. the yellow areas are a flash flood watch. we are keeping an eye on the auxilliary spillway of the oroville dam so far doing okay but a lot of rain is moving in there between now and wednesday. surf is up. the yellow highlighted area, that's our coastline, that means some of the breakers up to 20 feet. so it's wet, windy, sloppy this morning for the commute. storm number 2, this is a big one. this is going to nail southern california so if you have any plans tomorrow for the holiday weekend, boy you're going to be driving directly into the
