briefing, there was no good answer i don't know. that's not a good answer for him. you need to know, very sharp guy and he asked very blunt and direct questions and he expected the answers. >> reporter: the calls for a special counsel to look into russian ties ratcheted up in the days since the firing of james comey. the deputy attorney general rod rosenstein made the call to bring in mueller. >> it took a lot of guts for him to make this decision and to place someone with such sterling credentials to take over this position. everyone in this country should breathe a sigh of relief right now. >> director mueller, impeccable credentials i think will provide a great deal of comfort on both sides of the aisle. >> reporter: mueller is also a former u.s. attorney and marine. harp said he's a good choice to lead the investigation. >> if you want to have an independent body looking into a matter that is of such high importance as this, you want to make sure that it's someone that can look at it without any

blinders on, that they aren't going to be influenced by politics and they're not going to be influenced by either party of congress. >> reporter: harp also says americans should feel confident in the choice of mueller. >> he will do a very thorough, complete and competent investigation. >> now before joining the fbi mule early worked at a law -- mueller worked at a law firm in san francisco in the '70s and at the u.s. attorney's office in s every -- in san francisco in the '80s rising to chief of the internal division. later mueller joined a d.c. law firm. a few attorneys from that firm will join this investigations. andria borba, kpix5. >> this statement tonight from senator dianne feinstein. the right thing." tonight president trump said, "a thorough investigation will confirm there was no collusion between his campaign and any foreign entity. tonight a bay area democrat is pushing for president trump to be removed from office. assemblyman evan lowe from san jose introduced a resolution today asking for the president to resign and if he doesn't, it calls on congress to impeach him. >> when looking at this issue and focusing on the president, there's historical context to this. we can't wait any longer for an additional shoe to drop. we need to take affirmative action. >> this measure is largely symbolic. only congress can start the impeachment progress. we're getting our first look tonight at the suspected fire bug behind a string of arsons in the east bay accused of setting car fires all over contra costa county. joe vazquez with how investigators finally track him down. >> we are very relieved to have the suspect in custody.

>> reporter: the suspected arsonist is 36-year-old james bishop, iii. he's been charged with 14 counts of arson, but it's believed he actually set 30 or more cars on fire in contra costa county. officials set up a countywide task force to catch him. home surveillance video from past fires helped lead to his arrest. >> an older toyota rav4 was identified through security video provided by homes and businesses close to fire occurrences. >> reporter: police and fire investigators caught bishop after a fire saturday they believe he set right here in this benicia driveway. >> we got him stopped at mcdonald's east second. >> reporter: a short distance away near mcdonald's police spotted a toyota rav4. bishop was inside. he's now in jail under more than $3 million bond. bishop once posted a gofundme page describing himself as a starving artist who needed money to finish college. on saturday police found ammunition in his car which he says not allowed to have with past convictions of receiving

stolen property and sex with a minor. the number of fires was alarming to officials, as was the fact that more than one of the fires was very close to houses including this one where a little girl was sleeping in a bedroom right above. >> man, that's scary, yeah. so they put him away? >> reporter: yeah. he's in jail. >> good. >> reporter: the benicia man who owns the car that was torched saturday has a message to authorities who caught the suspect. >> thank you for, concord police. i hope this is the last one. >> reporter: in benicia joe vazquez, kpix5. tonight a young man is in the hospital after being beaten and stabbed at a park in san francisco the a group of six young people chased the victim down this evening in the middle of the park and began beating him with a golf club and bottle. the attackers took off when bystanders started screaming at them. >> we just seen a lot of police come and the paramedics came

and women thought some guy oded and -- we thought some guy od- ed and he was up on a stretcher with blood on the side of his face and head. >> the victim had two stab wounds. he was taken to the hospital. one of the biggest bands in the world just blew their curfew, in santa clara the clock struck 10:00 and irish rockers u2 were just getting started. now the 49ers may have to pay the price for disturbing the peace. maria medina is live at levi's. is the show over yet, maria? >> reporter: that is the big question of the night. a 49ers spokesperson said the show would end at 10:00. that did not happen. youtube just left the stage a few minutes ago well past the deadline and the question now is will the 49ers be fined? ♪[ music ] >> reporter: from start to

request, but then two weeks later granted more than two dozen curfew extensions for great america which is right next-door. ♪[ music ] >> reporter: a historic concert that may have ended on a bad note for the 49ers. ♪[ music ] >> reporter: so the 49ers would face about a $1,000 fine. i reached out to the mayor to see if she could comment and i have yet to hear back from her. maria medina, kpix5. tonight another south bay school is reporting cases of the norovirus. empire elementary in san jose brings the total to 13 schools. cleaning crews have been scrubbing down classrooms countywide. about 200 students got sick. some schools had to cancel all noninstructional events this week because of the outbreak. health officials say the illness is common, but it is unusual for this many people to

get it at this time of year. tonight we know what caused the mysterious bad smell that stretched from san francisco to the east bay. back in december lots of people said it smelled like rotten eggs, just nasty. air quality regulators said that it was the whichever ron refinery in richmond. -- the chevron refinery in richmond. they've already issued the refinery four violations because of the noxious odor. the refinery is denying they had anything to do with it. tonight 1,100 more cisco workers are about to lose their jobs on top of the 5,500 jobs cisco announced it was cutting last august. as the company continues to shift its focus to the software side of things. at this point cisco is not saying where the job cuts will come from exactly. a security guard is out of a job tonight after a confrontation with a customer in san francisco. that security guard is white. the customer is black.

have linked degenerative brain disease to football players and athletes with repetitive brain trauma. teams can now be find hundreds of thousands of dollars and possibly lose draft picks for failing to take players out of games. brady told espn just this week his wife wants him to take good care of himself and still have energy. >> i'm planning on having him be healthy and do a lot of fun things when we're like 100 i hope. >> the nfl says that there are no records that indicate brady suffered a head injury or concussion or complained of concussion symptoms. tonight brady, the patriots and the nfl players union have no comment. betty yu, kpix5. tonight b.a.r.t. is owning up to their own mistake unveiling a new emergency lighting system that should keep passengers out of the dark. b.a.r.t. first discovered a lighting issue during the massive power outage in san francisco last month. the montgomery station lights never clicked on. then again a week later a

downed pole knocked out power to the richmond station and the lighting suspect failed. now b.a.r.t. says it's fixing the problem by adding new batteries. >> something is not right even though we have these checks and this may not we're doing. it wasn't getting done or the documentation wasn't correct. something wasn't being handled correctly, so we've taken care of the situation. >> b.a.r.t. said 14 stations made the battery upgrade. so far six have been fixed. the spillway at the oroville dam will be shut off on friday so crews can start fixing it. the department of water resources says it plans to fill the giant crater in the spillway with concrete. they're hoping to make it functional by november 1st when the rainy season starts, but work is expected to continue well into 2018. the state has already borrowed $500 million to make those repairs. the home is that the federal government will re-- hope is that the federal government will reimburse them. incredible new video of a pod of whales having a blast on

monterey bay. a photographer who specializes in kayak whale watching spotted them on monday surfacing and slapping their tails. at 1 point they came even closer making waves of their own that rocked the kayak back and forth, the whole scene playing out just about a 1/2 mile from shore. tonight there's an explosive new tactic to crack down on overfishing and to bust boats fishing illegally. >> susie steimle will show us how bay area technology is helping in the hunt for fish pirates. >> reporter: this is what happens when commercial fishermen don't play by the rules in indonesian waters. the government wants these videos to serve as a warning to anyone fishing illegally in its waters. >> globally one of every five fish is as you said before would be called illegal, unreported or unregulated. >> reporter: the technology used to spot the illegal

fishing was developed right here in the bay area. programmers at google earth and sky truce based in oakland partnered with a nonprofit conservation group oceana to create a tracking system for commercial fishing vessels. >> a lot of people don't have a clue where their fish comes from. >> reporter: a kpix5 investigation showed some bay area diners aren't getting the fish they ordered. we performed dna tests at over a dozen bay area restaurants and found 11 of 16 fish samples were mislabeled. >> fish fraud is definitely an issue. it happens and it's a great disservice to the people in the industry who are honest and trying to do the right thing. >> reporter: paul johnson is a wholesaler on pier 33 in san francisco. he said his distributors are very specific about where the fish comes from, but he acknowledges that's not always the case. >> every consumer deserves to know what they're eating and they need to be educated. >> this heat map shows where we

think fishing is. >> reporter: google's brian sullivan showed us how anyone can log onto globalfishingwash.org and see where commercial fishing vessels are anywhere in the world. >> the vessels are broadcasting their identity for safety. the technology is designed so others nearby can see where the other boats are so they don't collide. >> reporter: the signal each ship sends can also be used to catch illegal activity. often a clue is when the tracking system is entirely turned off. >> you can see it fishing outside the international water. then it disappears and reappears. now it's going to disappear and reappear all the way over here. so this area here is multiple days travel to get from here over to there. >> reporter: global fishing watch has also caught fishermen entering marine protected areas. >> here you can see two fishing vessels. >> reporter: using the technology and some images from a private satellite greenpeace were able to track down tied

fishing vessels they assume were illegally tracked down to a cargo ship. there have been instances of slavery exposed on commercial fishing vessels. in 2015 hundreds of men were freed after the associated press discovered they had been enslaved on cargo ships for months at a time. since february the nonprofit sea shepherd assists in helping five vessels. the conditions on board were deplorable. >> you could be buying fish that have human rights abuses. >> reporter: dr. warren is a senior scientist. >> once you have these kind of tools the people that buy fish from other people in the supply change can start making certain demands to insure the legality of the catch they are buying. >> reporter: dr. warner said the u.s. is still behind other countries when it comes to
