now santa clara county is spending millions of dollars to get ready for the next disaster. >> if you find yourself in a community that has not burned, it will eventually. >> reporter: santa clara county fire battalion chief mike matheson will be running the county's newly approved wildfire resilience program. a pilot program that will be rolled out to cupertino, and saratoga. he is hiring for a brand-new team. an eight-person crew that will be the first of its kind in the county to clear brush on public property, maintain fuel breaks, and venture escape rates are viable and safe. once more, the county will add a brand-new specialist to come out and personally inspect properties. matheson says attitudes are shifting. >> higher to five years ago, there was not a lot of -- this hasn't happened to me so why should i worry about it. we are trying to create a program that is going to help them do the right thing. >> the more prepared the public

well. >> reporter: kiet do, kpix 5. let's take a live look in dublin. warm temperatures not helping those in dry conditions. >> we have been talking about this extended drive period. people wondering if it will compound and lead to a worse fire season. >> fortunately, this warm spell is kind of a one day thing. we are already cooling off tomorrow. we can measure the fireside with a statistic called energy release component that it is basically a statistic that measures the buildup and dryness of those fire fuels. earlier this year, we were in near record territory. the redline is record territory. the blue line is where we have been so far in 2022. you can see we are near those record levels. but with the april rain, that was -- even a modest amount of rain -- enough to drop us down to what is normal this time of year. of course, the dryness does ramp-up as we head through june, july, and august. right now, it is one. san jose was in the 80s..

court for the second straight day, president joe biden took aim at republicans and supporters of his predecessor. >> what are the next things that are going to be attacked? because this mega crowd is really the most extreme political organization that has existed in american history. >> reporter: on capitol hill, democratic lawmakers are voting to make roe versus wade federal law. >> every single american is going to see where every single sender stance. >> reporter: but with the filibuster and a 50-50 senate, there is little to no chance of passage because democrats need at least 60 votes. the issue is poised to galvanize voters heading on both sides into this year's elections. >> those decisions should be made by the elected representatives of the people of various states. >> reporter: the leaked draft opinion was circulated internally among justices in february. the final decision is not expected until late june or early july. already, states and healthcare

women's health protection act, which would guarantee access to abortion services across the country. this bill was introduced in response to the supreme court agreeing to hear this mississippi case. and now, some democratic lawmakers, including senator padilla, are calling for an end to the filibuster so this will can get past and essentially make roe versus wade into federal law. but that does not appear to have the votes, sara. just yesterday, senator joe manchin said once again that he remains opposed to getting rid of the filibuster. >> that would be critical. natalie, thank you so much for your reporting. here in california, governor newsom expressed outrage over the draft opinion to overturn roe v wade. apx 5 -- >> reporter: ryan, the governor appeared at a plant hair

parenthood gathering in los angeles saying that he is committed to safeguarding women's productive freedom. he touted his support for abortion rights, stating that he will push to amend the state? constitution to add protections. the changes that could appear on the november ballot would ask voters to ensure permanent abortion access in the state regardless of the supreme court's final decision. >> at a time when countries around the world are expanding liberties and expanding freedoms and expanding rights, here we are in nine states of america about to roll back rights. how about those folks that cannot even afford a greyhound bus ticket? how about all of those women and girls in states where they don't even make an exception for rape? talk about extremists. rape and incest. that is how extreme the republican party is in the united states of america. >> this one dealing with

abortion rights. his first ad released on monday focused on his pandemic record. of course, the primary comes up on june 7. there are more than two dozen candidates for governor on that ballot. the top two will go on the ballot in november. >> you can only imagine this will have an impact on the primary and the midterms in november across the country. we continue to bring the very latest developments on the abortions rights fights on air, on cbs news bay area, and streaming on cbs news bay area. also this evening, we are tracking an increase in covid cases. the positivity rate sits at 3.2%. that is up about .5% from last week. but that number does not include at-home tests that come back positive and go unreported. those are very popular right now. new cluster cases are happening at workplaces, schools, and kpix 5's max darrow on the south bay high school and how they are responding. >> reporter: around 60 students here at high school have tested

positive for covid-19. with about a month left in the school year, the principal is urging families to step up their safety precautions as they are at school now to ensure they can finish out the school year without covid getting in the way of academic testing or any plant social activities. >> we don't want to blow it at this point. we don't want to have to say, okay, we cannot do prom. we cannot do graduation. cannot do any of the activities we have planned. >> reporter: and i notice, principal kevin buchanan sent out to families to make informed of a major increase since spring break. the school has notified around 2000 students they may have been exposed. that is nearly the entire school. >> we pivoted from indoors to outdoors last week. >> reporter: he says they are strongly recommending but not requiring students to wear masks. >> it seems like some of the testing had fallen off a little bit, so we are re-emphasizing the need for everyone to get tested at least once a week. sometimes more if possible. >> reporter: what los gatos

high school is experiencing right now is not really an anomaly. >> we are seeing multiple flavors of omicron now. definitely an increase in cases. it is not like the previous times. and the reason why is the decoupling between what we see in the community and what we are still seeing in hospitals. that is in the bay area. nationally, hospitalizations are taking up a little bit. whether or not that will come to the bay area remains to be seen. >> reporter: in the south bay, that is beginning to be the case. dr. sarah cody gave to the board of supervisors on tuesday. >> they have remained a fairly level for a few weeks. however, over the last several days, we are just beginning to see an uptick. >> reporter: back on campus, it is the home stretch of the year with ap testing, senior prom, and more. >> we are cautiously optimistic

>> reporter: the moment a spectator rushes the stage and tackles comedian dave chapelle at the hollywood bowl. it took was right as chapelle was wrapping up his set. he appeared to be uninjured. security quickly apprehended his attacker. the man was then kicked and punched repeatedly by security guards. the suspect is identified as 23- year-old isaiah lee. >> the weapon that was recovered is really discussing in the sense that manufacturers allow them to do this. it is actually a replica of a handgun. semi automatic black pistol. from the barrel of it extended a dagger. >> reporter: the lapd is investigating the security breach. >> how did the suspect get into the venue? there are numerous checkpoints surrounding the entire venue to check for any type of weapons but how he slipped through is a mystery to all of us. >> reporter: chapelle brushed off the incident. he thanked jimmy fox for checking on his well-being just as the trouble unfolded.

the suspect seen here in the stretcher was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon. the scary moment took comedic turn when chris rock, who was slapped by will smith at the officers, to the stage. working with the hollywood bowl to make sure and if something like this never happens again. luciano, cbs news los angeles. the moment an alabama corrections officer allegedly helped an inmate escape from jail. that is officer vicki white guiding casey white outside on friday. she told officers she was taking him to get an evaluation at a courthouse, but there was no appointment. they met two years ago when he was first at the jail where she worked. >> this guy -- i think he used her and swooned her into doing something totally out of character for her.

love the heat. it feels good. but it is wearing on me today. >> paul heggen is here. i guess we need elizabeth because she is the only one with tennis form on the set here. >> if you were doing it in the city, you would have to battle the fog and onshore wind. temperatures are way into the 80s. even closer to 90 degrees. it is all about that onshore wind, which we expected and we expected temperatures in san francisco to get up to around 70. it just dependent how early that onshore breeze kicked in. it kicked in pretty early. temperatures were significantly cooler along the bandanna around the coast. response before today's warm and wet weather is going to allow this contract to get a little bit closer to us. not directly overhead. close enough -- produce those gustier onshore wind. and maybe, just maybe close enough for a couple showers to sneak into the northbay

thursday night into fair friday. what were going to see is more cloud cover overhead. cooler weather arriving tomorrow and sticking around for the rest of the weekend into the weekend. the symptom of the marine layer sticking around the coast today was the fog that has just been clinging to the coast and sticking in the golden gate. that is going to spread out as we head into the rest of this evening and tonight. starting up tomorrow morning with some locally dense fog, but also cloud cover up in the atmosphere. the first of the parade of storm systems makes its way to our north. those clouds unlikely to drop any precipitation on us on thursday. the fog out there should back up toward the coast by late morning. mid day at the latest. don't get your hopes up much in the way of measurable rain. 20% rain chances north of the golden gate. thursday night into friday. again on sunday. and then again monday night into tuesday. we will keep you updated as is

one of those passing storm systems gets a little bit closer. the pollen count is not going to be affected much by them. at best, we are going to be in the medium category on friday and sunday. temperature down is only 55 while it is 85 in livermore and 86 degrees in concord. 64 degrees in oakland. did climb into the 70s earlier today. the winds have shifted onto that onshore direction. that is going to continue pushing the cool air and linda. the wind is not dying down a whole lot of the night. i temperatures tomorrow pretty pretty close to what is normal for this time of year, but that is a big job for ellen portions of the bay area. upper 50s along the coast. upper 60s and low 70s around the peninsula and south end of the bay. mostly 70s in the senate are valley. you're not going to see the direct impact of those onshore winds until later in the day when they pivot to the northwest. temperatures in the east bay -- thusly low 70s east of the diablo range. low 60s in the city with mid to

upper 60s for oakland in the east bay. thicker clouds overhead a little earlier in the day keeping you cooler than other inland parts of the bay area. likely to sneak up to just above 70 degrees. temperatures will stay near or even below average as we head into the we can. looks like mother's day on sunday is going to be the coolest day in the seven-day forecast. a chance for a shower right along the coast. tomorrow night into friday. again on sunday. and monday night into tuesday. these are real slight chances. we will take a look at the first one on futurecast coming up 5:30. >> i like those chances. with threats. they are even losing customers because people think it is a russian run company. >> the name of the business is nikolai caviar company. how they have been losing customers in the war in ukraine began. >> reporter: caviar company has a cafe inside of the ferry building. they have beginning threats and letters, including things like, go back to russia. covid hit them hard and now they are dealing with this. business is not unusual for employees like him these days. soon after the war in ukraine erupted, so did the hateful messages from people passing by . >> some of the letters have been pretty intimidating. i know for my staff members that it is a lot. >> reporter: online sales have plummeted by about 50%. a friend of the business inside of the building has been handing out support ukraine buttons to build unity.
