another place, 1.3 inches of rain an hour. a wider view, this storm has been tracking to the northeast as it has been moving south, it's slowly been sitting over us. we're going to get great rain fall accumulations overnight and snow in the sierra as well. these are sustained wind speeds right now. 25 miles per hour in san francisco at the airport. 26 in half-moon bay. 21 in oakland. 20 in fairfield. these are all sustained winds. as we head into the overnight hours, we're going be seeing thunderstorms. the best time frame between midnight and 4:00 in the morning. as you sleep, you may hear thunder. you may hear a little hail on the roof. into tomorrow morning, 7:00, scattered thunderstorms left at that point. we are going to see moderate rain through the early afternoon. showers turning scattered by the later afternoon. we'll have the time set on future cast and show you your forecast coming up in a bit. let's head outside to the

north bay, which has been getting the brunt of the storm so far. jonathan bloom has been checking out marin county tonight. jonathan. >> reporter: pam, it has been a wet evening here in san rafael. after weeks and weeks of dry, sunny, unseasonally mild weather, finally the north bay got dumped on with rain that will last the rest of the night. people didn't always have their raincoats handy. some didn't have working umbrellas. the streets are drenched with rainwater and the wind has been blowing. the afternoon commute, that was spared from the rain, the afternoon commute did see a lot of wind. here's how it started out. >> before the rain came, there was the wind. high wind advisories warned drivers to watch out. and at the toll plaza leaving richmond, flapping flags showed it wasn't a joke. the wind was noticeable, but

not too problematic driving across the bridge. at the other end, it picked up. you can see trees and brush whipping around and gusts so strong, even the camera was shaking as white caps chopped their way over the bay. the rain drenched the pavement and sidewalk in downtown san rafael. it clogged storm drains. the wind kept up blowing around the tropical landscaping outside this restaurant. it took one customer by surprise when he opened his umbrella and found it was tough to hold on to. you could see the wind blowing sheets of water. some with hooded jackets and some used buildings to take cover. at the downtown bus depo, unprepared riders covered their heads. and thought wind whipped trees on 4th street didn't lose their holiday lights, they did lose a lot of seeds which were blown from the branches on to the

sidewalk. now this storm has not given all we have to offer. it has one more trick up its sleeve. that will happen tomorrow morning. here around the bay. that means if you are near the coast, you should expect waves taller than normal and be careful for fear there might be some flooding in areas right near the ocean. in san rafael, jonathan bloom, kron4 news. we have power outages to tell you about. 761 customers, that power should be back on by 4:00 in the morning. 123 customers are without power there. that should be back on by 1:00 this morning. danville and alamo, 308 customers have a power outage right now. they are looking at a 2:00 a.m. repair job right now. that is affected by the separate issue in danville

where there is an outage of 135 customers, but that is due to a car that went into a power pole and their power is not expected on until 7:00 in the morning. our weather coverage continues online. you can always check the latest forecast details on our website, just log on to kron4.com and click on the weather link. the fbi is now investigating a suspicious letter sent to a bay area healthcare facility today. that letter was delivered to the veterans affairs hospital on miranda avenue in palo alto. after it arrived, one man fell ill and the building was evacuated. >> this is building six where the suspicious letter was discovered in palo alto. a hospital spokesperson explains the mail employee felt something gritty. when he opened it, he felt ill and went to the emergency room where he became nauseous and vomited. me was treated and released. authorities for the fire

department as well as the police department were contacted and the entire building with 150 people inside was evacuated as a precaution. the fbi was called in and they have taken custody of the envelope. >> it first occurred, everybody was really, really concerned. as the day went on, nobody was ill and the original manhood was feeling good. as the day went on, i think more and more optimism came from that, realizing maybe it wasn't anything hazardous. >> building six where this whole episode took place is for administrators, the hospital is in a separate facility and it wasn't affected. a presidential visit for the bay area later this week. president barack obama is set to arrive in san francisco on thursday. we'll have a look at what he will be doing while he's here. that's just ahead on kron4 news. no matter what time your

that ran a ground in the san francisco bay. the crews are working on that situation. coast guard officials rushed to contain an oil spill. the company that owns the barge says it was intelligencally pushed on to a sand bar to prevent it from sinking. less than 1 gallon of oil was spilled out of the 3800 gallon tank. officials are slated to vote on whether or not to fund sex change operations for city employees. if approved, the city would put aside $20,000 a year for the operations. also on the agenda, city leaders will vote on whether to invite detainees from guantanamo bay to move to berkeley. the proposal would invite one or two detainees. the council meeting was underway with no vote. oakland police call it one of the biggest drug busts in that city's history in recent years.

moderate to heavy rain fall. small hail could be embedded in this, plus lightning strikes. you could hear the hail on the roof overnight. 2:00 in the morning, look at the heavy rain. also over concord and the santa cruise mountains continuing to push through. we'll be left with scattered showers after that with yairs of heavy rain embedded in it. as you head out the door tomorrow, scattered showers, tapering off a little bit. you'll want to keep the umbrella handy throughout the day tomorrow. 5:00, you see heavier rain and continuing into the 10:00 hour, more areas of heavier rain rotating in. rain fall totals look like this, up to 2 inches in the north bay. we have seen about that at santa rosa airport. a stark contrast to downtown, where it's been an inch. central eastbound is up to an inch there. less in the south bay and up to 3 inches in the santa cruz

mountains. you noticed the winds. a wind advisory is in effect. it has been breezy throughout the day. overnight, these winds will be to 35, 45-mile range. we have seen issues with the power. this does cause the possibility of downed trees and power lines. we is several pow r outages right now. into tomorrow afternoon, temperatures are really going to struggle to warm. 50 degrees in napa. 49 in fairfield. 53 in san jose and 53 in liver more. this storm is going to bring a lot of snow to the sierra. heavy snow tonight into tomorrow morning. 1 to 2 feet of snow at lake level. that's the lowest elevations. 3 to 5 feet in the higher elevations. we have been looking forward to that for quite some time. it's not going to be the only snow. into storm, the rain turns to showers. a blustery and cold afternoon. into thursday, a chilly morning to start the day. showers on and off throughout

the day. another big storm pushes through on friday. but it looks like as we head into the weekend, a smaller chance of rain. by sunday a30% chance tests in the mideast are spreading, bringing traumatic scenes of demonstrations. people in libya are protesting in the streets. as kron4's katherine shows us, new protests are happening in among other places, iran, where the government is making it clear that it will have no patience with any unrest. >> the mood of change has been sweeping the middle east. the government has been beating, arresting, even shooting protesters. there's no pretense of tolerance. in fact, listen to this. this is the iranian parliament chanting for the execution of two government opposition leaders. today, president obama blasted iran for its treatment of

protesters. >> i find it iron that i can you have the iranian regime pretending to celebrate what happened in egypt. when in fact they have acted in direct contrast to what happened in egypt by gunning down and beating people who are trying to express themselves peacefully in iran. >> thousands of people have been protesting in yemen for days now, calling for political reform, the resignation of the country's president and even in iraq, where the u.s. maintained a strong military presence for nearly a decade. there are demonstrations, people protesting corruption. the government's inability to provide basic services like food, water, and power. algeria is promising to end its 20 year state of emergency after weekend protests there. and protesters demanding better jobs were met with tear gas and rubber bullets. two protesters have died ask he is sorry it happened. >> and we gave our warm
