>> live, from the bay area's news station, this is the kron 4 morning news. >> pam: 4:30 p.m. the president is calling a catastrophic. he is talking about the tornadoes that have pounded the south. this one is huge, it is closing in on alabama area home of the university of alabama. at least two students were killed. this was just the beginning. part of the nation's deadliest tornado outbreak in almost four decades. this was the scene, people getting their first good look at damage. this is what was left a

whole neighborhoods are gone. homes where they stood piles of garbage. the death toll keeps climbing. at last count at least 280 people killed across the south. but within 2/3 in alabama. another alabama and town hard hit, lookit this, at least in this one spot people were killed. president obama will be in alabama friday. he will view the damage, visit with some of the families. roughly 1 million homes, businesses without power. this is torture, homes just obliterated -- people only had a few minutes' warning to try to take shelter. it hit six states, alabama, georgia, buckers sought

tennessee. -- tennessee. this is video in mississippi, another huge tornado, as they keep going down the road you see it begins to move very quickly periling across the road. that card gets awfully close. you can't help but wonder what would happen if a tornado suddenly changed direction. back in alabama and university students said it was hard to compare this to anything else he has seen. >> the only thing were seeing the damage done, by katrina, ivan, dennis. the way the storm surge picked up crowds. the damage here is a lot worse. >> pam: this is damage from virginia. the storm tore up

>> reporter: here's a look there where the storms travel, you can see the storm that started here in texas last week. it has been making its way across the united states, to the point where they amid all the way to the east coast. taking a look here, you can see the storm started here. bring in eastern texas. they made their way in this direction small and tornadoes, heavy winds, rain. north carolina was spirit. i want to take a closer look at alabama. one of the most unusual things is how far the tornados have traveled. you can see some of the storm cells travel more than 100 mi.. the most severe one, it traveled 13 3 mi.. typically it will drop a few tornadoes, move a bit, these ones are staying

fierce, strong. moving very quickly. wreaking destruction. >> pam: it has been for this and the gunman opened fire killing two people, wounding four others at ste. jimmy's restaurant and bar. sweet jimmy's remains closed. there's still trying to identify the suspects in the shooting. more than 300 students and their families held the march. they want to honor the memory of one of the victims 22 year-old adam williams. he worked in an after-school program. he was one of the people killed in the shooting. it was an emotional day for these students who made the sense for the march. >> peace for adam. peace for all. >> of very disappointed that adam died.
