>> catherine: as little as 20 feet in some areas. it's also a serious health hazard. kron 4's charles clifford has details on how the pollution could eventually reach the bay area. >> reporter:these are images from the city of harbin, which is about 600 miles northeast of bejing. a lack of wind and high humidity combined with pollution from coal fired power plants and burning farm fields has created this very thick smog. >> reporter:cars and busses are getting lost, roads are closed, this is a shot from the airport where you can barely see the planes. >> reporter:now, the pollution isn't just an inconvenience, the particulate matter here has reached as high as 1000 micrograms per cubic meter. the world health organization considers anything over 300 to be hazardous. they say that severe respiratory problems could develop if this goes on much longer. >> reporter:even though these pictures are from thousands of miles away some of this smog could eventually reach our shores. scientists have long known that westerly wind flows across the pacific carry chinese pollution in our direction but in a
