different stages of growth. now a criminal investigation is underway. kron 4's ella sogomonian has the latest from antioch. firefighters were called out to this antioch home on bugle way after neighbors spotted heavy smoke.but the real surprise was what was found inside.sot: robert marshall, contra costa county fire marshal//"the front door was reinforced and the windows has bars which is indicative of a marijuana grow house."dozens if not hundreds of marijuana plants were discovered in several bedrooms throughout the home in this quiet suburb. sot: "wow that is crazy, just in a good neighborhood like this you wouldn't think that nobody would be growing that." the fire marshal says crews had to get out until pg&e electricians arrived because meters could have been bypassed as is typical with a grow house.but that the cause of the fire was simply a tossed out cigarette.sot: ella sogomonian, antioch//"investi gators tell me that fire started right here inside a planter, and then it quickly spread up to the attic."sot: robert marshall, contra costa county fire marshal//"oddly enough this was our second structure fire of the day that was caused by a cigarette." with temperatures soaring into the upper 90's fire fighters

say it's lucky the flames didn't spread into dry brushand onto surrounding homes."we're very fortunate you know because it's so dry out here it could have been easily the whole block up in flames."antioch police haven't responded yet but it is suspected this could now be treated as a criminal investigation because of the grow operation that was clearly more than the 6 plants alowed per home by state law. lawrence karnow: it was another hot day away from the coast. temperatures again soared into the 90s in the valleys. but at the coast it was a much different story. a sea breeze and fog had temperatures there running 30 degrees cooler. you can see some of the fog along the coast now while the skies inland remain clear. the sea breeze has picked up again but with a strong ridge of high pressure above the fog won't make it that far on shore. a big cool down is coming but it will be slow. we'll check out the hot spots and the places you can find cool weather coming up in a few minutes.

( justine) the penalty phase of sentencing sierra lamar's convicted killer continues on monday. the court took a break friday after the prosecution rested its case. the defense will present its case this week. it has asked the judge to allow a psychologist to testify about antolin garcia-torres' childhood. the judge has said she will consider the request, but wants to hear testimony from garcia-torres' family, first. the prosecution is seeking the death penalty. the bay area will celebrate the birthday of a former san francisco leader. tommorrow would have been harvey milk's 49th birthday. just last week the former san francisco supervisor 's face was decorated on storefront windows across the castro neighborhood. milk was gun downed inside city hall by former supervisor dan white november 27th, 1978. (jr stone) in world news. north korea has fired another ballistic missile. south korean officials say it flew about 500 kilometers -- or some 300 miles. that's a shorter distance than north korea's last missile test. that one was launched about a week ago -- and was considered a success. diplomats say the untied nations council now plans to hold an urgent discussion tuesday about north korea's latest missle test. the closed discussion was requested by south korea and japan. - so today's a really exciting day here. stanley roberts is, finally, coming back after being gone for awhile on medical leave. we're really happy to see stanley and watch him get back to work. we're gonna try not to push him too much today. he'll get out in the field for a little while but we're all just thrilled to have him back and know that he's feeling well enough to catch people doing bad things out there again. - are you ready? - well it's gonna take a little bit of getting used to again but i'm ready. how much mail do i have? - [woman] probably a ton. - more than i need, yeah. bills, ick, yuck.
