( jr stone ) an uber driver is caught in the crossfire of yet another highyway shooting.. this time on i-880 in oakland. the driver and two passengers were shot. good evening...i'm j-r stone.( justine ) and i'm justine waldman. this just the latest in a series of shootings we have seen on bay area freeways... even with surveillance cameras going up in hot spots. kron 4's hermela aregawi is with us now with details... hermela, do we know the condtion of the victims? ( hermela)we don't have specifics.. but we do know they were able to transport themselves to a local hospital. chp tells us the passengers in this car were specifically targeted in this shooting.but the uber driver just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
tonight police are looking for suspects responsible for shooting three people overnight. (sgt. robert nacke/chp head spokesperson): "around 4:15 this morning there were some party goers that summoned an uber they were travelingin that uber vehicle. it away a toyota highlander, southbound on i880, right around 23rd avenue when the vehicle pulled alongside their uber vehicle and perceded to fire gunshots into the toyota highlander." one of the passengers took over the car and drove to the nearest hospital. (sgt. robert nacke/chp head spokesperson): "the hospital they went to their protocol is to contact law enforcement anytime someone is injured with gun violence." chp says they have several leads and a couple of witnesses but are turning to the public for more information. (sgt. robert nacke/chp head spokesperson): "obviously this is a concern and if you travel in uber or if you are in uber driver this is probably something that has your attention. obviously the chp is out there 24 hours a day patrolling our roads trying to keep them safe."we
spoke withe people who say.. they still wouldn't feel safe driving strangers. "melissa charrette/concerned driver): "my concern being a mother is that if i went out and did that yes it's a good way to make money but now i have two babies to come home to and if i were to pick somebody up and they put me in that situation. i wouldn't be home with m babies." ( hermela ) chp says this year alone.. there have been 43 highway shootings across the bay area. live in the newsroom, hermela aregawi. kron 4 news. ( jr stone ) breaking news out of san jose. police tell us one person is dead following a shooting... not far from oak grove high school. investigators say the call came in just before 7 p-m... when they arrived... they found a man's body. the address of where this happened is on tradewinds drive... near spinnaker drive. the victim's name has not been released. (justine) a bizarre story
out of the south bay tonight ... san jose police are investigating an attack on a taxi driver and the possible kidnapping of the passenger. the passenger was picked up on great america parkway near tasman in santa clara just before two this morning. the cab driver then headed to diridon station in san jose... that is a transit hub not far from the downtown area. the station was closed... and that's when police say the trouble started. investigators say a lexus approached and the four people inside demanded the woman in the cab get out. the taxi tried to drive off but the car stopped it. one of the people in the lexus got out and slashed the cab's tires and attacked the driver. the suspects then pulled the woman out of the taxi and forced her into their lexus and drove off. it is not clear what happened to her... we are told the cab driver is okay. police have limited descriptions of the suspects.
(justine) 3 people were hurt in a stabbing at an east bay bart station. according to witnesses, it all started on the platform... when a man tried to steal a person's backpack.(jr stone) the lafayette station was shut down for a few hours as police looked for the suspect. kron 4's ella sogomonian is live in lafayette where it happened.how are the victims doing? fortunately the victims are said to be okay they're injuries are not life threatening but this was yet another scary situation for commuters today some saying they'll rethink riding on bart while others try not to worry about it. sot: maureen ruschke, bart commuter// "i've always felt safe. i don't after today."a vicious attack on the lafayette bart platform closed the station for hours on sunday.at around 9:45 in the morning a man pulled out a knife in what was thought to bes an attempted robbery. the violent action of one led a
commuter to rely on the kindness of another stranger to get around the closure. sot:nancy hobert, bart commuter// "people inside said don't go in they've closed the station. so i thought how am i going to get to orinda so this guy said if you know how to get there come with me so i jumped in his car."three people were hurt. a 20 year old man was cut on his head, a 19 year old man hurt his hand, and a third unknown victim left before help arrived. this latest violence on bart has frightened commuters. sot:maureen ruschke, bart commuter// "now i am thinking maybe i shouldn't be doing this. if lafayette isn't safe in the daylight on a sunday, where are we safe? so it's concerning."while others are unphased trusting they'll keep out of trouble."does it worry you as a commuter? no. not at all. why is that?"sot:brandan williams, bart commuter// "because we have to be careful with violence when people are doing something crazy i stay out of it and i don't be worried about it."the suspect is said to be a white man with blond hair lafayette police say may be in his 20's but bart police say between his 30 and 40's.he was wearing a green jacket.a bart spokesperson says they plan to release an image of the suspect once they get it to help in the search.

(jr stone) a police procession accompanied the hearse carrying the body of stacee etcheber from the airport this afternoon. (justine) the mother of two is the wife of a san francisco police officers..
and is one of the victims of the las vegas mass shooting. kron four's spencer blake was there as the police escort passed. (looklive)it was very brief. the family took the day to themselves to mourn together, so we kept a respectful distance at s-f-o as the hearse headed for the etcheber's hometown of novato. (pkg)stacee etcheber's family faced their next step in the grieving process sunday as the body of their wife, mother, daughter, and sister returned to the bay area.she was killed during the mass shooting in las vegas last sunday while attending the outdoor concert with her husband, vinnie, who is an san francisco police officer.his department gave her hearse full processional honors from s-f-o to the funeral home.her brother-in- law al etcheber spoke to reporters earlier this week. "it's about he kids right now. we want to make sure that we can support them. i'd love to start a memorial fund for stacee etcheber."in washington, some members of congress are starting to agree on the need for revised gun

a country music concert in las vegas. 58 people died. last night, the country star jason aldean who was on stage during the shooting... paid tribute to the victims of the las vegas massacre on saturday night live. "this week, we witnessed one of the worst tragedies in american history. like everyone, i'm struggling to understand what happened that night and how to pick up the pieces and start to heal. / but you can be sure that we're going to walk through these tough times together, every step of the way.""in a world that keeps pushing me around, i stand my ground...."(justine) aldean then performed "i won't back down," the tom petty hit song. petty died on monday at the age of 66 from cardiac arrest. (justine) investigators still do not know why the shooter... stephen paddock .. killed 58 people. but we are learning from the owner of the mandalay bay hotel...where paddock stayed... that he

(jr stone) a 21-year-old man from novato has been arrested in connection with a hit and run ... where bike riders were run over during a race.(justine) last night -- the suspect was taken into custody at his home. he is accused of slamming into four cyclists yesterday morning on point-reyes-petaluma road near hicks valley road in rural
west marin. kron four's philippe djegal spoke with the suspect's mother. (philippe)no name or face/suspect's mother- "my heart is breaking right now." voice cracking... as her world shatters... 21-year-old aaron paff's mother relives the life- altering moment she saw her son being taken away from their house in novato in cuffs and into custody by the california highway patrol.no name or face/suspect's mother- "this is a horrible thing. and, my son, he wouldn't have done this on purpose and that's the only thing i'm going to say." the c-h-p says witnesses saw it differently.andrew barclay/chp- "we had multiple witnesses on scene stating to us that it appeared the truck intentionally veered to the right and struck the cyclists." the victims were cycling in a charity bike ride for the marin county bicycle coaltion. the c-h-p says a motorcyclist passing by, witnessed the collision on point-reyes petaluma road in west marin... and, also captured images of the dark blue dodge ram pick-up truck involved on a camera mounted
to his helmet. about 12- hours later... the c-h-p found a truck with front end damage on aaron paff's driveway in novato. in the end, c-h-p officer andrew barclay says it was paff's neighbors... who tipped investigators off about the damage to his truck.andrew barclay/chp- "it would be very difficult to not feel that type of an impact or that type of a collision." in all... four men were injured in the hit and run... one critically. he was airlifted to santa rosa memorial hospitalnats- andrew barclay/chp- "all four were expected to survive with varying injuries, which is great news. that being said, um, for a couple of them, it looks like there's going to be a long recovery."no name or face/suspect's mother- "(philippe) and, what would you like to say to the victim's families? (mother) and, i am very, very, very sorry. very sorry." and, devastated to know her son will spend the night in the marin county jail... facing felony charges. in marin county, philippe djegal, kron four news.
( justine ) also in the north bay today: a viewer got this video of a crash between a train and a tour bus in napa this afternoon. the viewer tells kron 4 ...the popular napa valley wine train involved. we haven't heard if anyone was hurt in the crash... railroad police are the ones handling the investigation. (jr stone) police believe a man and a woman in fremont are responsible for seven auto burglaries and a robbery. and are trying to find them tonight. last night...a witness saw a man and woman break into a car and steal a backpack on stevenson boulevard. police say just minutes later, that same man grabbed someone's purse and got into a black honda accord. police say then there were two more burglaries on pacific commons boulevard. four additional auto burglaires were reported on stevenson blvdall with similar suspect descriptions. police believe there may be a third man invovled in the burglaries.
( justine ) a couple of fires in the bay area tonight to tell you about. we will start in contra costa county... where firefighters made quick work of a small grass fire along highway four this afternoon near willow pass road. you can see from this photo firefighters mopping up. no word on what started this fire. (justine) and in napa county a fire destroyed two structures and three cars at an auto salvage yard today. the fire burning off green island road near the napa county airport... started around 2:30 this afternoon. the fire scorched 20 acres. no one was injured in the fire. the cause is under investigation. ( jr stone ) all these fires a reminder... there is a red flag warning for the bay area. with winds expected to remain gusty over the next 24 hours or so... the national weather service has put a warning in place through tuesday morning. this means conditions are ripe for
wildfires which means we can expect to see firefighters on high alert... particularly in places like the oakland hills. (anchor) time now to check on our weather... with meterologist lawrence karnow. pay will be able to use them. carpoolers, buses, motorcycles and clean air vehicles will be able to use the express lanes for free if they have fastrack-flex, solo drivers will have to pay a toll. the pricing starts at 50 cents... but as the congestion increases so does the toll price. ( justineteve ) the lanes will officially open tomorrow at 5 a-m. the only time the toll is not enforced is on the weekends. (jr stone) a coast guard helicopter crew rescued a man... who became stranded along the napa river. two men were riding boats last night when one of the vessels became disabled. one of the men swam ashore and was driven to the vallejo boat ramp by a good samaritan.
that man called coast guard officials and reported that his friend was still stranded. a helicopter crew was dispatched to the area. the crew located the misisng man near the napa river and flew him to the napa airportwhere they were met by medical personnel. the conditon of the man is unknown tonight. ( jr stone ) the blue angels dazzled as always... so how did this year's fleet week turn out? we wioll get the answer from event organizers.( justine ) and hurricane nate has blown through the south... a look at the damage left behind by the latest storm to slam the united states.

harvey weinstein has been fired tonight by his own company over a sexual harassment scandal. the new york times revealed the allegations on thursday.... which led to weinstein taking a voluntary leave absence. in a statement today, the board cited new information that had emerged... leading to the decision to oust weinstein. his lawyer has not commented. the hollywood mogul is also a big contributor to democratic politicians.... some of them are giving his donations to charities in light of the new york times report. (justine) lawmakers from arkansas to oregon are pushing for federal forest management changes... they say
