firestorm. but tonight... there is hope and firefighters are optimistic they are turning the corner. good evening... i'm justine waldman. and i'm j-r stone. here is what we know tonight. ( jr stone ) the number of deaths statewide remains at 40 tonight. 22 of those are in sonoma county... the sheriff's office there is working to identify the bodies. napa county has reported six deaths so far. but the big news tonight is many of the mandatory evacuation orders are being lifted in the north bay. the weather conditions have improved and firefighters are making headway in getting the flames under control. ( justine ) we have an updated map from cal fire showing where the fires are burning in the north bay. if you see an area shaded in red... that is where a wildfire is burning or has burned. what cal fire does is when a fire is active... they will put a red icon with

a flame on it. if there is a black icon... the fire is either fully contained or out entirely. cal fire updates this map through out the day. santa rosa launched a web page where people can look up houses and see if they survived the fire. we have put a link on the website... this is a live look at the map. the red indicates vegetation. if a home looks gray, it is likely destroyed. you may see roofs... but that is not necessarily a guarantee the home itself survived. we have seen a few neighborhoods where the houses appear to be untouched but that was not exactly the case. you can view it for yourself on kron four dot com. ( jr stone ) santa rosa has its own map for evacuations as well. if the area is shaded in red... that means there is a mandatory evacuation in place. we have a full list of the areas and streets on our website, kron four dot com. (justine) the smart train that runs through sonoma county will resume services tomorrow. the santa rosa north and sonoma county airport stations have been closed due to the devastating fires. smart officials say

the stations also lost power... they had been operating on generator power. full service will resume on monday. free rides are being offered for those who need transportation through wednesday. a week after the north bay fires erupted, businesses including hospital are rebuilding.sutter regional in santa rosa was at the center of the blaze.kron 4's hermela aregawi spoke with hospital officials and employees who were the first line of defense for many victims. (hermela aregawi)a spokersperson tells me this hospital was built for disaster.. but they haven't seen anything quite like this. as you will see the facility here was surrounded by fires as evacuees came for shelter. the people working here at the time say.. they had to step into different roles to make sure that victims were taken care of.i spoke with a security guard here who was here working that night.he says he smelled smoke but like many people didn't think it was a major fire.. until he started seeing evacuees running into the hospital.and then as you will see the blaze was everywhere.. around the hospital.so employees took fire extinguisher and started

basically acting as fire fighters because at that point..there werent any here. and of course while people that work here are helping those coming in.they are also worried about their own loved ones. kelsey claybrook/sutter security helped victimsto be honest my first knee jerk reaction i was afraid one of our people were caught out there. a lot of people have died its a very upsetting event and at that time i didn't know that. i was just terrified that somebody i knew who i showed up to work with. who had talked about my life that something was going to happen and we were going to be responsible. so there was a lot of fear for that. i was concerned for my family definitely at certain points i just wanted to make sure everyone was okay and i ended up being here all told 17 hours so we didn't have that opportunity that first night. and so there was a lot of stress and are we doing this right.

the sonoma county sheriff's office confirmed the deaths of three more people from the tubbs fire today.one of themwas sharon robinson, of santa rosa. (spencer)sharon robinson had a really calming impact on people, based on what i heard from the sprague family. they used to live close to her on donner drivewhich is up in the hills and fairly rural. jeri sprague knew sharon for decades, though she kind of fell out of touch with her after she moved away from the street a few years ago.she says sharon had a grown daughterand she thinks she remembers a grown son, too. mostly, she remembers how artistic sharon was. "she was absolutely a lovely lady. she made clothing and

offshore winds sent temperatures into the 80s in many parts of the bay area. fire weather is still a big concern but it appears that weather conditions will improve this week. winds will generally be light and the himidity should increase some on tuesday and much more into wednesday. on the satellite image you can see high pressure overhead. offshore winds will continue through monday to make for another warm day. the sea breeze will increase on tuesday as high pressure weakens. in fact there is a chance we could see some rain later in the week. there is still plenty of smoke in our skies from the fires and there is a spare the air in effect for tomorrow. air quality will still be poor in the central and southern san joaquin valley tomorrow. our computer models are showing a change with a few more clouds on tuesday. it will be warm tomorrow with highs in the upper 80s inland, 70s and 80s around the bay, and 70s at the coast.temperatures will cool on tuesday and wednesday and there's a chance of showers on thursday night and into friday morning before a return to sunshine and warmer weather next weekend.

( jr stone ) a brush fire errupted in novato today. it broke out in the area of carmel court and roman court off fourth street. authorites say carmel court has been evacuated. fire officials say other residents in the area should be prepared in case the fire spreads. surrounding streets are closed... and the area should be avoided. coming up at eight. napa county is optimistic tonight that conditions are about to get much better after what's been a rough week. where firefighters are shifting their attention. and we will take you to santa rosa... where some firefighters thought their firehouse could with stand a fire. they returned to devastation... see what precious items they were able to recover. plus we will take you to the front lines with an elite group of firefighters to see how they plan their attack on the

progress has been made on the on the atlas, nunes and tubbs fires burning in napa county.( jr stone ) today, napa county leaders shared their updates. kron four's philippe djegal explains why there is optomism moving forward. (philippe)belia ramos/supervis or- "we are now switching over towards recovery mode. it's a day i have looked forward to for a week." an historically deadly and destructive week in napa county... that ends on a positive note. for four of the past six days... the napa valley was under a red flag warning... but as of early sunday morning... that is no longer the case. napa county fire chief barry biermann says the weather has taken a turn for the better. fire fighters are still

working in extremely dry conditions with low humidity. but the wind isn't kicking up like it has been... so, crews are inching closer to getting the upper hand on the atlas fire.barry biermann/napa county fire dept.- "little to no growth is occuring right now. um, we have basically line all the way around the fire and we'll continue to mop up and we will get further containment as, uh, things go on." on sunday, biermann saying the nunes fire was a priority, since so much progress has been made on the atlas fire.barry biermann/napa county fire dept.- "we're working this area of dry creek, mount vetter road, up into rutherford as the fire continues to come down off of highway 29 corridor. so, this is all on the west side of highway 29." the tubbs fire continues to burn -- though chief biermann says it doesn't appear homes are in eminent danger.barry biermann/napa county fire dept.- "and, i do no anticipate, with our current conditions, um, that, that it will make it into the town of emergency crews are now working towards allowing people back into their neighborhoods at some point... for those whose homes are still standing. but some road closures will continue until then. wrapping up an emotionally taxing week for fire victims and their local leaders.belia ramos/supervis or- "and, i look forward to the day that this can be a distant memory in which we

(justine) fire crews are working to protect a historic castle from the nuns fire. helicopters are dropping water around the sonoma county mansion. it sits in the ledson winery... just below the sugarloaf ridge. that ridge has been scorched by the nuns fire. ledson is just one many wineries threatened or destroyed in these devastating fires. (justine) the north bay fires are bringing out the best in people. here is scott bell. he lived in santa rosa for 17 years and taught at santa rosa junior college for many years before retiring to a hay ranch in nevada. when he heard of

all the animals needing help after the fire.. he loaded up his 53-foot trailer with donated hay and drove 11-hours straight to the sonoma county fairgrounds. he donated almost 500 bales of hay. 1 bale will feed 5 horses for a day. the donated hay costs about 7-thousand dollars... plus, add in 2-thousand dollars in freight costs for the drive. scott tells me, he also donated hay during the valley fire in lake county, because he likes helping people and animals. ( justine ) firefighters have been working around the clock... since the first flames kicked up sunday night. that includes an elite team of firefighters called 'hotshots" ( jr stone ) kron four's terisa estacio connected with one team as they looked to work on a strategy to save even more homes. (j.r.)hundreds of firefighters are currently on 24-hour shifts battling the north bay fires. the crews meet up in open spaces to debrief and as they finish their shifts they hand-off the work to the next group of firefighters. the crews have been able to get more rest in the last couple of days, but nonetheless, they tell us that they are tired. for many, this is the worst fire they have battled in their career. according to cal fire, there are portions of the fire that are high up in the mountains-a positive because it is away from people and structures, but a negative because it makes it harder for them to put it out. ( jr stone ) now at 830, here is the latest on the wine country fires.. we just got these numbers from cal fire. the tubbs fire in sonoma and napa counties is now 60-percent contained. it has burned more than 44- thousand acres. the pocket fire which is burning in sonoma county is 30-percent contained... it has scorched more than 11-thousand acres.( justine ) the atlas fire is the biggest fire going... it is napa and solano counties... it has burned more than 51-thousand acres and is 65-percent contained. and the nuns fire... which is burning to the east of highway 12 in sonoma county is 40-percent contained... it has

burned more than 48-thousand acres. ( justine ) parts of napa and solano county that were evacuated north west of the city of fairfield were opened up today for people to return home. ( jr stone ) it was one week ago today the fires started and kron 4's gabe slate met up with a family who was evacuated that whole time and just today returned home. sot - brenda one of my cats died brenda lost one of her cats to the atlas wild fire. her family lives here off suisun valley road near the green valley area in solano county north west of fairfield. they returned home after one week of sleeping in their cars and at shelters. sot - brenda we got home and we are all safe.. other people have lost a lot more their home was spared no damage the cat did not make it but the animals they were able to take with them did.. but that it made it extra challening having animals with them living in their cars. sot rainey - i had a 90 pound pitball, 4 cats, 2 birds all in one car up in the hills you can see how close this fire got to brenda's house. just a couple miles away.. scorched earth on one side.. on the

(jr stone) the oakland raidershave expanded their effort to help the victims of the north bay firestorm. the raiders announced a one million dollar donation today. the money will be facilitated by american red cross. the silver and black joined forces with six other bay area teams just last week... to donate a combined $450 thousand. the raiders... urge all of their fans...to contribute to the effort. ( justine ) everyday people are emerging as heroes ... as we learn the stories of how they saved people from the fires. (j.r.) tonight we're learning more about what first responders went through after they were called to the north bay fires. last night we showed you a quick clip of what a berkeley engine company went through. tonight we take a closer look at that video this is new video released by the berkeley fire department showing what those with engine 6 experienced when they were called to the tubbs fire in santa rosa early monday morning. 1:28they made their way to santa rosa along highway 101 with a strike team that included four other trucks and a leader. miles before they arrived they could see the glow of flames coming from santa rosa. the plan was to meet in the k-mart parking lot where they would get their assignment. but the k-mart was fully engulfed in flames

so they moved on. to the right and the left firefighters could see flames. at one point the crew was stationed outside a gas station that was also fully engulfed in flames.sotfeel the heatminutes later the strike team was drivingthey weren't initially sure what they were looking at here but soon learned it was homes that had burned to the ground.at one point firefighters found a row of unburned homes, set their truck up, and ran five water lines off that truck. the 30 or so them didn't happy to have helped but could have fact the learned that one of the burned one of their firefighters. ( justine ) students at a napa high school helped out the responders working so hard to save homes in the north bay firestorm. kids at justin siena high school fed hundreds of police and firefighters today. the got help from professional chefs who whipped up food for the hungry men and women. dozens of

hand made signs are plastured around campus... thanking all first responders for their hard work. (sot) (justine) the high school is also shipping out tons of food to base camps around napa county. ( jr stone ) we have seen a lot of people making donations to help the fire victims. and some of the evacuees and first responders got a special treat in santa rosa. celebrity chef guy fieri showed up at the county fairgrounds and started cooking. fieri lives in the area and brought an oven and smoker to cook meat and make some mac and cheese for the evacuees. he estimates they made about 12-hundred lunches and put together another 15-hundred meals for dinner. fieri says people
