now where firefighters are gaining more ground on a series of wildfires. containment is up from yesterday on all of the fires.... the nuns fire in napa and sonoma counties has burned more than 52- thousand acres and is 78- percent contained. the atlas fire in napa and solano counties has burned just over 51-thousand acres and is now 80-percent contained. the tubbs fire burning in napa county has burned more than 36- thousand acres, and it is now 87-percent contained. and the pocket fire burning north of geyserville in sonoma county has burned over 12- thousand acres and is still 58- percent contained. more than 11-thousand firefighters are on the front lines. they are battling 16 large fires across the state... that have burned more than 245- thousand acres. ♪ (vicki) tonight we continue to hear stories of people doing extraordinary things to help their neighbors and community through this tragedy in the north bay... one duo found a unique way to save the lives of pets in burned out neighborhoods who were seperated from their owners. kron-4's gabe slate met them and joins us live from santa rosa with their story.

i did a ride along with two amazing people who took it upon themselves to save animals.house pets.and they did it because no one else couldthey had the vehicle and credentials to cross the road blocks into burned out neighborhoods. ats - for the last 4 days judy stark and peter tapia have driven up from san francisco in the morning to the sonoma humane society in santa rosa and loaded up hundreds of pounds of cat food.nats - water and barrels of water.. then they go to the evacuated burned out neighborhoods like coffey park in sant rosa, where house pets are estranged from their owners.. nats - food drop and they drop the food and water in places where they, or the

area.not once, but three times over three days.this neighbor up on bicentenial way who owns a heavy equiptment rental place, got a portable water tank and a pump up here .and along with another neighbor who's a retired firefighter and a handfull of homeowners ran water from this pool and beat back the fire burning on the hills around this areauntil firefighters arrived to help up midday monday .it was a big group efforts. with all the neighbors who came around and worked his teams together put now it's gone fires all over the property all the way to the down to the retirement home down there and all the neighbors banded together and worked in teams and they were running around and all working as a team making sure fires are being put out everywhere ricardo uribe had been away from his home when the fire destroyed other homes in the fountaingrove neighborhood and threatened his property..but he jumped in to help when the hill at the end of the cul de sac ignited on tuesday morning. by then, the impromptu fire brigade used fire hoses left behind by firefighters to help squelch those flames which threatened to take out the whole block and then some.if anything we saved was probably the

convalescent home back here because the fire was starting again until we came in there with the hosespolice came trying to evacute this block again on tuesday night..when another fire that broke out to the east.but once again the band of neighbors stayed behind and worked together to put out the fire until a strike team got there. in the end they saved their homes and homes of neighbors who evacuated the area. and made new friends.we lived here for 15 years and i really didn't know the people behind us now he's my buddy were bosom buddiesfriendships forged by fire.helping a stronger community rise from these ashes.maureen kelly kron4 news. (vicki) as many people are reeling from the wildfires in the north bay... today many were marking the anniversary of yet another tragedy... today marks the 28th anniversary of the deadly loma prieta earthquake....which shook the bay area to its core back on october 17th, 1989. the quake was centered on the san andreas fault. it caused extensive damage to the bay area.....including san francisco, the south bay.......down through the santa cruz mountains.. the 6-point-nine quake caused the double decker nimitz freeway to collapse in oakland....alon g with the east span of the bay bridge. 63 people were killed and thousands were injured. san francisco mayor ed lee released a statement today saying, "the city has since learned a lot...with a huge focus on making buildings, homes and bridges more secure and resilient."

(vicki) here is what we know right now. the so- called "bear fire" broke out around 10:30 last night in the area of bear creek canyon road. it started as a house fire and quickly spread to vegetation. the fire is still five-percent contained tonight. (grant) it has burned 271 acres and destroyed four buildings. officials say the steep, rugged terrain has been a challenge, and several firefighters have been injured -- but not seriously. one firefighter had to be rescued early this morning after falling 50-feet down a ravine. us tonight in santa rosa for a story you will see only on kron 4. natstuesday afternoon, neighbors valerie burns and sean wilson, met up for the first time since fire forced them from their homes more than a week ago. valerie invited kron 4 to this reunion because she wanted to publicly thank sean for saving her house.sothe's my hero, yes, absolutely.valerie and sean live next door to each other along wiki drive in northeast santa rosa. when the tubbs fire roared through their neighborhood early on the

morning of october 9th, both fled the advancing flames. sean watched the fire from a few miles away.sotthe next morning he walked back to his house, convinced he would find it burned to the ground.sot with no water available, sean grabbed a rake and shovel and spent the next three hours keeping the flames at bay. he went back and forth putting out spot fires and raking leaves. when the fire had come within just a few feet of valerie's back yard, sean spotted fire fighters nearby and got their attention. sot valeria and her family were staying at a shelter in healdsburg when sean called them to say their home was saved.soti couldn't believe it. i really couldn't.and while sean was able to save his house and several of his neighbors house h,e feels for those who have lost everything. sotvalerie hopes that sean's actions will serve as an inspiration.sotnow , unfortunaly, sean's parents lost their home as well. they lived just a short distance away from him. in santa rosa, charles clifford kron 4 news.

is in santa rosa where she met with proud shoppers. this neighborhood grocery store is stepping up to help first responders by offering free meals.sot: josh tuhtan, shopper//"that's so good. i'm so proud of the community it's doing a great job. the fire fighters, first responders, everyone is doing such a fantastic job."for one week oliver's market employees say they've comped weary fire fighters to show their thanks for doing all they can to protect the north bay from destructive fire. sot:suzie slade, shopper// "i think that's awesome that's what rincon valley is about, that's what santa rosa is about, that's what sonoma county is about."sot: dustin vulmouth, shopper// "i've actually been here first hand seeing the first responders here. we've seen them here at the supermarket thanking them really appreciating what they've been doing here in our community. to see a community market doing this as a whole is very cool and very awesome. they've also been handing out water to anybody that comes in." one humble fire fighter told kron4 off camera that he hasn't taken up the kind gesture made not only by oliver's but he says several other businesses in the area. in addition oliver's has already donated ten thousand dollars to the north bay fire relief fund.the market will also match customer donations

(grant)(grant) (grant) now to the family of a san francisco auto mechanic...who nearly lost everything. mike abu-yaghi of r&m's automotive... says his wife's parents lost their home of 30-years on eagle court in santa rosa. he says his children were playing at the home sunday morning... then later that night...the house was scorched... reduced

to rubble and debris. mike says he's just happy no one was injured.(sot) mike says unfortunately his brother-in-law that lives near eagle creek... lost his home in the fire as well. (vicki) fema administrator brock long is visiting the bay area to see the damage from the wildfires. long will visit sacramento and sonoma and napa counties to meet with survivors...volunteers , and state government officials. the federal emergency managment agency's office in oakland and it's deployed teams... are also coordinatiing with officials to support firefighting response activities and disaster survivors in the north bay. tonight for people who are building their homes after the north bay fires. be cautious of hiring unlicensed contractors. the contractors state license board is touring damaged neighborhoods to warn victims of the dangers of hiring people posing as contractors. this is video as they put up signs today. kron four spoke with the contractors licensing board about what you need to look out for.
