the north bay has the potential for the same type of mudslides.(steve) as kron 4's dan kerman tells us, experts say the work that has gone on over the past few months to prevent mudslides will help, but it will does not remove the risk entirely. while the devastation caused by mudslides in the santa barbara county fire zone is shocking to many, it's sadly what soil experts expectedsot it is absolutely not a surprise to anybody who is familiar with soils.professor laura sullivan green chairs san jose state's civil and environmental engineering department she says the destructive mudslides there are due in part to timingsot prof. laura sullivan- green/sjsu civil and environmental engineer 19-29 it's been very recent since the fires went through so the area has had very little time to put preventative to reduce erosion and prevent these types of slides. or establish ground cover or vegetation coversullivan green says it's a very different story in the napa sonoma fire zonesot

they've had time to put erosion prevention meausres in place which is the first step to prevening mudslidesin fact, work has been going on for several months to prevent erosion by putting out sand bags and burms and planting grass to hold the soil in place. still experts say the north bay is not yet out of the woods, that's because it can take months and sometimes years for fire charred soil to absorb water as it once didsot the potential for this to happen still exists in napa and sonoma countiesrecently sonoma county put out this interactive map so residents could determine the level of risk of mudslides in their specific neighborhood. that concerns sullivan greensotmy biggest concern is they will look at that map an see they are in a low risk area and figure it's not going to happen sullivan green says it still could happen and if in the next heavy rain they see lots of water and lots of soil moving, they should consider evacuating.

area just took another step closer to being more expensive, but possibly easier to navigate.(pam) a committee of the bay area toll authority, just passed a resolution on to the full board... (pam) that measure would put a measure on the june ballot ... which could raise tolls on nearly all bay area bridges.. by three- dollars. kron4's maureen kelly explains what the money would be used for.. voters could soon decide if commuters will have to start coughing up more money...if they want to cross all of the bay area bridges, except the golden gate. but as painful as that could be to the pocketbook....those who support the idea says that extra money will finance billions of dollars of transportation projects that will ease gridlock. nobody likes higher bridge tolls of course not but nobody likes sitting in congestion either the bay area toll authority will vote on january 24th on whether to put what will be called regional measure three

on the june ballot. the bay area council will then start campaigning for it to pass. it'll add more vehicles to bart it would double the size of the ferry system. it'll improve highways and bridges and bus transitif passed by a majority of voters from all 9 counties the toll hikes would be implemented in phases. the cost to cross bay area state run bridges would be raised by $1 dollar in 2019, go up another buck in 2022, and then up another dollar in 2025.... (standup)which means in seven years it could cost 9 bucks to cross the bay bridge during peak commute times, and cost 8 bucks on the other six bridges. the mtc says their polling data shows most voters would pass the measure. but nearly all the drivers i talked to at his gas station in san francisco's south of market were firmly against the idea. i'm gonna vote no on that. people should think about it and lowing come people the people who have small kids we need to help the people you know it's all just more gentrification push and poor people out and making it a playground for the rich it's just too expensive you know, some people have to commute back-and-forth every day every day just to work it's just too much the proposed toll hike would give a 50% discount to those with a two bridge commute, and car poolers would cap out at 4 bucks a crossing..maureen kelly kron4 news.
