( darya ) breaking news from overnight... 16 people are displaced after a fire burns thru an apartment complex in san jose.( james ) kron4's lydia pantazas is live at the scene this morning at the 100 block of rancho drive. lydia ... what can you tell us? ( lydia )breaking news from overnight. we are following an apartment fire that broke out in san jose. firefighters received reports of the fire just after midnight. it took about an hour for them to put it out. a total of 8 units were damaged... displacing 16 people including 5 children. no injuries have been reported from the

( james ) the number of missing after a mudslide hit southern california is constantly changing -- and not just because people are being found. right now... the number stands at 43. but yesterday morning it went from 48 down to 8.. because of uncertainty and mistakes. rescue teams and cadaver dogs are digging through knee-deep mud looking for people who haven't been seen in days. authorities say at least 17- people have been killed by the storm. one montecito man says he lost two friends.

( james ) the areas where the victims were found remains under mandatory evacuation. these deadly mudslides came after the thomas fire -- the largest in state history. heavy rains triggered mudslides in burned out areas. authorities say nearly 600 structures are damaged or destroyed from the ( james ) amtrak has resumed service across parts of southern california. the deadly mudslides in ventura and santa barbara counties forced the amtrak pacific surfliner tracks to close earlier this week. amtrak says they expect high demands for the service since highway 101 is expected to

stay closed through monday. ( james ) take a look at the video of a mudflow down in burbank. you can see the muddy waters... so powerful... they push a car right down the road. the video was taken by burbank firefighters. they posted it to instagram writing -- "urban prius bobsledding in burbank!" the driver and his girlfriend say it was a very scary situation. but driver was able to maneuver the car away safely. no one was hurt. ( darya ) in napa county... the sheriff's department has identified the man killed by a rockslide on highway 121. 22-year-old hernan reyes- aguires lived in fairfield. he was on his way home when a giant rock knocked his car off a cliff. officials in napa county are now stepping up efforts to prevent more mud and rockslides from happening.

the office of emergency services is providing free straw wattles and wooden stakes to people in areas damaged by last october's fire storm. ( darya ) the d-m-v is working on a fire recovery operation to remove fire- damaged vehicles in santa rosa. with support from the state and local law enforcement agencies. the department is working to identify damaged cars and process the necessary paperwork for removal. the goal of the operation is to keep debris cleanup on track. the removal will continue for the next ( darya ) in the east bay... there are new efforts to solve the murder of a 16-year-old hayward high school student. a 10- thousand dollar reward is now being offered for information on the murder of lamar murphy. lamar was was shot and killed almost one year ago on princeton street and smalley avenue in hayward. the alameda county sheriff's office tweeted out this poster asking anyone with information to come forward. ( james ) a former coroner in the north bay pleads guilty to committing a lewd act with a minor. darrell harris entered the plea during a

hearing yesterday morning. he was charged with a number of sex crimes dating back to 2008... and continuing until earler this year. harris faces five years of probation and up to one year in the marin county jail. he must also register as a convicted sex offender. harris had worked in the marin county coroner's office for 15 years. ( james ) happening now... the president is denying claims that he used vulgar language during a meeting with lawmakers on daca. while a group of bipartisan senators pitched a compromise on immigration... a source briefed on the meeting says the president grew frustrated and asked lawmakers quote: "why do we want all these people from expletive countries coming here?" but this morning the president tweeted that was ánotá the language he used. but he did say that he his talk was tough.

bay... we're learning about a second dog that had to be hospitalized after coming down with the "dog flu." kron4 visited the cambell vet hospital on tuesday. they're now telling us that a second dog, a basset hound, required hospitalization after contracting the virus. dog flu causes coughing, nasal discharge, lethargy, decreased appetite... and is highly contagious. vets at the hospital are concerned the flu will spread throughout the south bay... ábut there is a vaccine that the clinic reccomends all dog owners get for their pets. ( darya ) for the fourth time in less than a month--- a sea lion has attacked a swimmer in the san francisco bay. we first broke this story yesterday on the kron 4 morning news... the attacks are happening at aquatic park... three times in december and the most recent happening yesterday morning. two women were swimming when a sea lion

( james ) an alameda man admits he struggled with drinking and driving. multiple d-u-i arrests later... he decided to thank police for helping turn his life around. the man says he hit his lowest point two years ago. he would sneak out of his hospice community to drink and get behind the wheel... resulting in 4 d-u-i's in less than 2 weeks. he then decided it was time to sober up and thank the police who didn't just arrest him...but helped change his life. ( james ) he says the officers took him to a-a meetings.... and even picked him up once when he was passed out to take him home. he brought the officers he credits with saving his life a plaque of appreciation. he is now is a motivational speaker about the impacts of driving drunk. ( darya ) it's looking like voters in the south bay will decide whether an

embattled judge should stay on the bench. superior court judge aaron persky is the target of a recall. he sentenced former stanford swimmer brock turner to six months in jail -- for sexually assaulting an intoxicated woman. angry with the light sentence... organizers spent months collecting over 100-thousand signatures on a petition to recall judge persky. if the registrar determines that 58-thousand signatures are ávalid... the recall will qualify for the fall ballot. ( darya ) happening now... a warning for people in daly city to be on the look out for a coyote. somebody in the southern hills area took this picture of a coyote. wildlife officials say it is fairly common to see coyotes in suburbs and urban areas. they still want to remind people that these animals can be dangerous. never approach a coyote. if you encounter one... do not run away. instead keep eye contact... wave your arms and throw rocks. wildlife officials also say to keep your pets inside and do not leave pet food out. bay... state money has been given to the sonoma county regional parks... to study a potential bike and pedestrian trail. the trail would be along the lower russian river... between forestville and highway 1. if approved... the trail would run parallel to river road and state highway- 116. the 19- point- 3 mile trail study could start this summer. officials say, this trail would provide safe walking options for people. the total estimated cost of the study.... is almost 800- thousand dollars. ( james ) happening now... ford is telling people to stop driving certain trucks... now. the company says that some 2006 ford rangers have faulty takata airbag deflators. now the company is confirming that a driver died back in july of last year because of the inflator. this is the second death involving the 2006 ford rangers. overall 21 deaths have been linked to the faulty takata inflators worldwide. ford is now telling dealers they must replace those airbag inflators for free.

( darya ) rat poison used at marijuana farms appears be killing endangered owls. that's according to scienctists at u-c davis and the california academy of sciences. pot farms use rat poison to keep rodents away from their irrigation systems and crops. but it appears to be poisoning owls as well. according to the study seven of ten endangered northern spotted owls found dead tested positive for rat poisoning. research found other breeds are also being poisoned. researchers are concerned the poisoning of wildlife will increase with california's legalization of recreational marijuana. it's called the "laundry pod challenge". memes have been making rounds on the internet... showing people putting the pods on food, and cooking them. ( james ) but some teens are taking the challenge one step further... and actually biting into the pods. doctors say this could cause a lot of health issues. ( darya ) health officials have previously warned parents of laundry pods... as young kids can mistake them for candy. ( james ) last year poison control centers received more than 10-thousand reports of kids being exposed to the

( darya ) there is also a warning about the number of injuries caused by air guns.( james ) a new study shows that the number of kids injuring their eyes with the air guns has more than doubled over the last 20 years. these include... b-b guns... pellet guns and paintball guns. ( darya ) doctors say that kids should wear protective glasses when using these air guns. they also say parental supervision is important. nearly 90 percent of the injuries happened when there was no adult around.( james ) the n-r-a also said that these air guns should be treated with the same respect and safety as regular guns. was getting his backpack out of his car when the thieves approached him. he says his laptop and dissertation were inside the bag. a struggle ensued... and one of the suspects fired a shot... threw him to the ground.... and dragged him. we first showed this video yesterday morning. after a second and third shot...the international student let go of the bag. but... he was hit by one bullet in the thigh. ( darya ) the victim said he felt lucky only one of the bullets hit him. he graduated with his p-h-d just 10 days after the robbery. police are still looking for any suspects in the case. ( darya ) for the fourth time this week... a coffee shop is targeted by thieves.

its a crime trend that's been plaguing east bay communities. take a look at the latest incidents. hercules, fremont, and now concord have been hit by thieves going after people in a coffee shop. on monday -- one person was pistol whipped inside a starbucks on willow avenue. then on tuesday ---there were two separate robberies in fremont. in one of them ... a woman had her laptop stolen. then on wednesday evening... a man sitting inside a concord starbucks was robbed. his laptop was also snatched. ( james ) in the north bay... petaluma police are searching for a woman who stole credit cards during two weddings. police say a wallet was taken on january 2nd... from saint vincent de paul church. the victim said she left her purse in a backroom during the ceremony. when she returned to the room... her wallet was missing and she later found out her credit cards had been used. a similar theft was reported last saturday... police released a photograph of the

suspect ... using one of the victim's credit cards at a target in petaluma. ( james ) santa cruz police need your help finding a bank robber. it happened at the u-s bank on morrissey boulevard near soquel avenue. the man had a gun and demanded money from the tellers. after getting away with cash... he ran off. police did follow a couple of leads but couldn't find the thief. as you can see... he was wearing a mask, sunglasses and gloves at the time of the robbery.
