(steve) kron-4's charles clifford joins us live in san francisco...with what it's like near the coast tonight. but first chief meteorologist lawrence karnow ..is here with what it looks like right now. lawrence karnow: a new storm brought rain to the entire bay area. it is a much colder storm so snow levels in the bay area will drop to near 3,000 feet. that means we could see a few snow flakes on

our higher peaks. showers will continue tonight with a chance of isolated thunderstorms. you can see the showers on doppler radar. they are more scattered now instead of steady rain. the wettest part of the bay area had over a half an inch of rain. on the satellite you can see the eye of the storm still spinning in the gulf of alaska. there is plenty of cold air the will rush in tonight and tomorrow. showers and chilly temperatures will continue friday with highs in the 40s and 50s. it will be a mostly dry but chilly start to the weekend. on sunday the clouds return with a chance of rain. more rain is possible next week. francisco's ocean beach.. charles. the weather is cold and rainy through out the bay area. umbrellas are out and roads are slick. here at ocean beach, the waves are high with a high surf advisory starting last night and going through tomorrow. beach goers are being warned to keep an eye out for sneaker waves... and cautioned about cliff errosion. charles clifford, kron4 news. 13 children... appeared in court.(steve) they are now facing a long list of criminal charges... grant lodes is here with the horrid details emerging tonight. (grant) david and louise turpin were arraigned earleir today...they have pleaded not guilty. today the d-a announced charges of torture, false imprisonment and neglect... they were reportedly allowed one shower per year...not allowed to use a toilet on a regular basis...hadn't seen a doctor in years....and had never seen a dentist. prosecutors say the kids were kept up all night and slept all day...so neighbors wound not notice the abuse. authorities say they were chained and shackled as punishment...going back years....fed one meal a day...and regularly beaten and occasionally strangled. d.a. mike hestrin - supposedly home schooled, the children lacked even a basic knowledge of life. many of the children didn't know what a police officer was.. the 17-

year-old, when asked if there was medication or pills in the home, didn't know what medication or pills were. the parents would apparently buy food for themselves and not allow the children to eat it. they would buy food including pies, pumpkin pies, apple pies. and leave it on the counter and let the children look at it, but not eat the food.(grant) the children are described as malnourished, undersized. it all came to light when a 17-year- old daughter escaped through a window...something authorities say she'd been planning it for 2 years. if convicted, the couple faces at least 90 years in prison... they're due back in court next month.. been in intensive care ever since .. this is a picture of the 16- year old from just this morning. the athletic director of joseph's school tells kron-4, he had a successful tracheotomy ---to help him breathe... and now he can mouth words to his family. after his surgery... he looked at his mom and dad and mouthed "i love you" the go-fund-me page for him went over 100-thousand dollars this morning. (pam) it has been a terrible flu season so far, and a new study may be shedding light on one of the reasons why.(steve) as kron 4's dan kerman reports after coughing and sneezing add breathing to the list of things that can transmit the flu virus. for sometime we've been told to cover our mouths when sneezing or coughing, but it turns out if you have the flu that may not be enough to keep the virus away from healthy people. it can also be transmitted simply by breathing

sot sheryl ehrman, ph.d/sjsu dean of engineering 16-26what our study shows is a significant fraction of our study participants were emitting infectious flu virus in small droplets through exhaled breath.what we found is people in the natural breathing pattern are breathing out fine droplets and those dropslets in 40% our volunteers contained infectious virussan jose state university dean of engineering sheryl ehrman was part of a team of researchers that conducted the study at the university of maryland. 178 people came in and breathed into the gesundheit ii machine, which was used to capture and analyze flu virus in exhaled breath. again 40% exhaled tiny droplets that contained the virus. researchers say the study published in the proceedings of the national academy of sciences, suggests staying home or away from others when ill.sotour study reinforces that so if they are really sick , you would want to stay home, don't go to work , don't go in public spaces , stay off public transportation don't go to the grocery store and that should reduce the likelihood of transmitting the fluin san

particualrly badly on one freewayas catherine heenan reports, our own stanley roberts has been talking about it for years, got one pickup truck sideways blocking two lanes copy northbound 280 to the northbound)..hands down, at any time of the day, 280 is the riskiest place to drive. this is a driver heading to the hospital after being rear ended by another driver on interstate 280 in daly city. for morning commutes, the zendrive study found the safest drivers on the golden gate bridge.the san mateo bridge has the worst.the zendrive website allows you to check the risk factor for your commute, based on time of day. from walnut creek, the trouble spots are after the caldecott tunnell and on the bay bridge. leaving pleasanton at a quarter to eight, you're less likely to run into bad drivers on 880 than 580.to and from san jose, the website says 101 is a better bet that 280. 101 has more traffic in all directions and a hiher number of collisions.but drivers on i-280 are more likely to speed or talk on their phones that

happened sunday around 4:15pm here in the parking lot of the hacienda crossings shopping center in dublin. dublin police lt. victor fox says the victim was 13-year-old girl out doing some shopping with her momsotthere were several similar drive-by-purse- snatchings reported in other cities here in the bay area back in 2017. it appears to be an emerging trendsotpolice have a limited description of the two suspects in the vehicle which is described as a white 4-door- sedan with dark tinted windows. investigators arefollowing up with witnesses and surveillance cameras in the area for any possible leads...in dublin haaziq madyun kron4news (pam) four suspects.... dubbed the "lucky lotto bandits" ... have been arrested in connection with

more than 30 -burglaries in santa clara county alone. and police say, the alleged burglary crews' crimes... stretched all over the bay area and northern california. these four suspects are accused in lottery ticket heists. police say, they usually targeted gas stations and liquor or convenience stores... and often used a rock to smash windows and get inside. then, they would steal california lottery scratchers, cash registers and money. police are still looking for these two additional suspects. they are both wanted on felony warrants. (steve) it's coming down to the wire in congress... if a spending bill is not passed by midnight friday... the government will shut down. the first day of the potential shutdown could coincide with the one year anniversary of president trump's inauguration.(pam) earlier tonight, the house passed a measure to stop the shutdown. but there is a tougher fight in the senate where the bill will need democratic support to pass.

(steve) the measure before the senate would keep the government running through february 16-th. but it's not clear yet .. if the votes are there. as this possible government shutdown looms we want to show you how it could affect us here locally..kron 4's gabe slate joins us now live in the newsroom with more.... gabe, we have experience with this... in 2013 the bay area was affected by the last government shutdown... right... in 2013.. for 16 days we lived without some federal services... if it happens again....for the bay area... big picture... the biggest affect will be on some of our tourist attractions and parks. so i break that down for you... and how it could affect you and your family on a personal level... one of the biggest things affected by a government shutdown is the national park service. during the last shutdown that lasted 16 days in 2013 the national park service lost more than 700,000 daily visitors, who typically add about $76 million to the national economy each day.the bay area has a high concentration of national parks.... the following are some of the more popular ones that would be closed... alcatraz island. crissy field in san franciscofort funston and fort point in san francisco.trails, and open

spaces all over the golden gate national recreational area.muir woods in marin would be closed.and yosemite national park the gem of the sierras... closed. most of the presidio in san francisco would remain open. golden gate bridge would remain open to vehicles, pedestrians, and bikes .... it is not operated with government dollars.. moving on to how this affect people in their daily lives... with the last shutdown in 2013 va financial benefits were disrupted. millions of veterans and their families almost did not receive their benefits. but before any vets were affected the government shutdown ended... unless you are a government employee furloughed or a veteran... during a shutdown the impact on you should be minimal. the united states post office continues as normal. social security and unemployment checks will not be interupted... if you need a replacement social security card.. that would be delayed until after the shutdown. medicade and medicare keep flowing.. also, passport or visa applications could be delayed. as well as some mortgage approvals if federal agencies are involvedyour

accused of killing his mother and step-father.(pam) now authorities say, he is likely a serial killer. cleophus cooksey was indicted on two- counts of first- degree murder. police now allege he killed seven other people ... in the three weeks leading up to that double- murder of his parents. police say, the victims are in varied demographic groups. there is no unifying method or pattern in the accused killings. authorities say, one victim was the brother of cooksey's former girlfriend. others appear to be random ... including being fatally shot during meetings arranged online. charges

in the seven additional deaths are expected in the next few weeks. passengers on a mesa airlines flight had a scary landing in dallas,texas today.... after smoke came shooting from the cockpit...take a listen. "you will be given instructions when to brace. remain in that position until the aircraft comes to a complete stop." that was footage recorded by a passenger. though the landing was rough -- no one was hurt. many feeling scared... shocked... but safe. airline officials say a faulty fan on the airplane caused the problem. the flight was booked through american airlines. scheme. she allegedly drove the child up to a house where a package had been dropped off so that he could steal it off of the front porch.(pam) the incident was caught on surveillance video, and police say... that helped them find 20- year-old suspect santana lindsey. clay lepard reports. we have shown you porch pirate after porch pirate over the years... but this one in deltona might be one of the youngest.you can see this car with tinted windows pulling up to a home on tamerlane street in deltona yesterday.a child gets out of the back seat and snatches this amazon package while presumably an adult up front waits in the driveway. unidentified resident off-cam: "it was frustrating and aggravating especially when i realized it was a little kid that they had come out of the car to go grab the package." this man doesn't want his face shown for fear of retribution - but he was supposed to get a 30 dollar battery for his garage door opener from amazon....unidentified resident off-cam: "i heard the doorbell ring while i was eating lunch so i figured i'd wait and go get it afterwards. a couple hours later i came out to get it and the package was gone."he's showing us this surveillance video to help get the word out there... hoping deputies can find the person driving this car. unidentified resident off-cam: "first, i

the bay area....(grant) thanks for joining us, i'm grant lodes...(vicki) and i'm vicki liviakis... lets take a live look outside at conditions along the embarcadero, at the san mateo bridge, bay bridge and check out the fog at s-f-o...(grant) we start tonight with chief meteorologist lawrence karnow.. who's been tracking the storm for days now...so lawrence you say the rain is only part of the story here? lawrence karnow: a new storm brought rain to the entire bay area. it is a much colder storm so snow levels in the bay area will drop to near 3,000 feet. that means we could see a few snow flakes on our higher peaks. showers will continue tonight with a chance of isolated thunderstorms. you can see the showers on doppler radar. they are more scattered now instead of steady rain. the wettest part of the bay area had over a half an inch of rain. on the satellite you can see the eye of the storm
