london breed took over as acting mayor. she was nominated to stay on as interim mayor... but was voted down in part because she's running for the office in june. after being sworn in... farrell talked about his goals for the city.

( james ) happening now... police are looking for the driver who hit and injured two people in walnut creek. it happened last night near the intersection of north main street and. second avenue.

there is no word on the victims conditions this morning and police have not released a description of the driver they for. ( james ) happening now... san francisco police are searching for a gunman who shot two people... killing one of them. it happened in the bernal heights neighborhood just after 5 last night. both victims were taken to the hospital. one later died. we do not know the condition of the other victim. ( james ) a homeless man is seriously hurt after being found on fire in a san francisco alley. now investigators are trying to figure out how it all happened. the man was found tuesday morning... just a few steps away from the 24th street bart station. witnesses say the man was sleeping in the alley. a short time later... they say he was on fire. police say a good samaritan saved the man's life by grabbing a bucket of water from a nearby cafe and dumping it on the man. police are now checking surveillance cameras in the area... looking to see how the fire started. police resonded to a fight outside the safeway on mendocino avenue last night. an officer attempted to separate the two men.. one of the men, 27-year-old timothy ruhs, tried to run away. the officer chased ruhs and tackled him to the ground. the man then punched the officer multiple times... breaking his nose. ruhs was eventually arrested... and the officer was taken to the hospital for his injuries. ( darya ) a loophole that helps thieves get away with breaking into a car... could soon come to an end. a new bill making its way through the legislature would allow prosecutors to prove that a person broke into a car... áif the window is broken. right now... a broken window isn't enough to get a conviction. and prosecutors must prove -- beyond a reasonable doubt -- that the car was locked. ( darya ) the district

attorney says a disproportiona te number of break-ins are happening among tourists driving rental cars. in those cases... a victim may be unavailable to testify whether the door was locked. there were more than 28- thousand car more than 28- there were more than 28- thousand car break-ins in san francisco last year... between january and november. ( james ) a central valley teenager pleads no contest to charges that she was driving drunk while livestreaming a crash that killed her younger sister. obdulia sanchez was driving in los banos when her car veered onto the shoulder of the road last july. her 14-year-old sister died after being thrown from the car. prosecutors say sanchez was livestreaming on instagram while driving... and the video shows her taking her hands from the steering wheel. the recording also shows her after the crash... leaning over her lifeless sister. ( james ) happening today... the university of california is proposing to

raise tuition at its 10 campuses for the second straight year. a vote is set for today. the board of regents says the move is necessary to compensate for state funding cuts at a time of record-high enrollment. the proposed increase is just under 350- dollars a year for áin-state students. and just under a thousand for áout-of-state students. the regents approved a similar increase last january. ( james ) two earthquakes struck just a minute apart last night in santa cruz county. accordring the to the u-s-g-s a 3-point-6 earthquake hit just after 10 p- m. then a second quake hit about a minute later with a 2-point-7 magnitude. the first quake was located about 4 miles east of interlaken while the second was located 3.1 miles east of interlaken. people felt the earthquakes all along the peninsula. ( darya ) new this morning... toys -r-us has announced which stores will be closing as part of its reorganization plans. the company declared bankruptcy

last year and now we know that 9 bay area stores are on the list of closures. here is the list of the stores in the bay area. they include the stores in pinole... pittsburg... san rafael... brentwood... fairfield... emeryville... east san jose... san jose and union city. this is part of a plan to close 182 stores. the company says that some of these stores could be saved if they are able to renegotiate some lease terms. the going-out-of-business sales are expected to begin sometime next month. ( james )( james ) six children have been killed in the easy bay in the last six months...all in car accidents. in each case, the driver of another vehicle has been charged with murder. all of these cases happened in contra costa county... deputy district attorney, derek butts, is handling the prosecution of

the most recent case - noe saucedo. he has been charged with two counts of murder after two young girls died after he crashed into their family car. the district attorney has a warning for reckess drivers... ( james ) the district attorney also warns that you could spend the rest of your life in prison if convicted. ( darya ) making national headlines this morning... a same sex couple in california is suing the state department because only one of their twin sons has been given u-s citizenship. the 16- month old boys have d-n-a from the same mother but they each have a different father's d-n-a. the donor mother is canadian and only one of the fathers is a u-s citizen... so only the child that shares his d-n-a has citizenship. now

the couple is suing the state department claiming that the department is discriminating against same-sex couples. the lawsuit was filed earlier this week in los angeles. the couple says they want equal citizenship for their sons because they are twins born just minutes apart. ( darya ) two bay area men have died -- just a few days apart -- while snorkeling at the same beach in hawaii. the drownings happened at a popular tourist spot in maui. the most recent death happened saturday. first responders say a 67-year-old man from castro valley was snorkeling with friends about 20- yards offshore. when his friends noticed that he was not moving... they tried to revive him but couldn't. last thursday... a 50-year-old man from oakland was found unresponsive in knee- deep water. beachgoers found him floating face down. ( james ) donations are pouring in for the 13 siblings who were held captive in southern california. more than 120-thousand dollars has been been donated so far. the siblings were kept chained to beds for months by their

parents... and starved. authorities say people from across the world have been donating money, toys, blankets, and clothing. several people are offering to foster or adopt the children who range in ages from two to 29. the parents -- david and louise turpin -- were arrested after sheriff's deputies found the malnourished children inside their home in riverside county. they have pleaded not guilty to torture and other charges. health... social media could be messing with your child's sleep habits.( james ) a new study found that teens who spend at least one hour per day on social media had more sleep problems than those who didn't. and the more time spent on social media... the less sleep teens got.( darya ) the study also found that teenage girls were more addicted to social media and therefore they are more likely to be sleep deprived. past studies have recommended that teens get between 8 and 10 hours of sleep.

fire officials reported the fire on social media shortly after 11 p.m. tuesday. the blaze is located near the intersection of west portal avenue and vicente street in the west portal neighborhood of the city. fire officials said the blaze is affecting many businesses in the area. further details were not immediately available.

( james ) voters in the south bay will decide whether an embattled judge keeps his job. the registrar of voters in santa clara county says enough signatures were collected to add judge aaron persky's recall petition to the ballot this fall. persky sentenced former stanford swimmer brock turner to six months in jail for sexually assaulting an intoxicated woman. organizers collected more than 90-thousand signatures to recall the judge. persky's current term ends in 20-22. ( darya ) police in the east bay are looking for a gunman after three people were shot. it happened on market avenue in north richmond. police say an argument may have lead to the shooting. the three people shot are recovering in the hospital. police do not have a description of the gunman. ( darya ) police have arrested two young men... accused of breaking into homes in emeryville. police responded to an apartment on adeline street near the home

depot. the property manager says he saw the men on a surveillance camera and called 911. police say when they showed up... the two guys took off. eventually... david chavez and samuel morales were arrested. police say the two burglarized the same complex last weekend. ( james ) first came a ban on plastic bags... now plastic straws could be next. according to the "be straw free campaign" -- more than 500 million straws are used in the u-s every day. the bill deals with dine-in restaurants. it's aim is to start a "straws-upon- request" policy. the bill could be heard by a legislative committee next month. ( james ) san francisco supervisors have voted to change columbus day to "indigenous peoples day." by changing the name.. the city will honor native american people and codemn their colonization. los

angeles and minneapolis have already renamed the holiday. ( darya ) a dog found tied up at a cemetery is now recovering at the humane society of the north bay. workers have named the dog "cemy." a good samaritan found the malnourished dog. cemy was chained to the fence with an electrical cord. he had no food or water. he was tied so tightly to the fence... that he didn't have enough slack in the cord to lay down. now... he needs a home. ( darya ) the vet says despite the mistreatment -- the dog has only a few skin issues. for now... cemy will remain under the care of the humane society. but it's likely that he will be ready for adoption on friday. átwo new views of the san francisco bay. there is a new proposal to build decks off yerba buena island... on piers near oakland. officials say this is an opportunity to expand access to the bay. the total cost is still being explored. ( james ) now to bay area football... the group "we stand with oakland" is throwing a hail mary to try to keep the raiders in oakland. they are now considering legal action against the n-f-l. the group knows the chance of taking on the n-f-l and its legal team and winning... is unlikely. but after a judge ruled that there is grounds for a city to sue the n-f-l for moving a team ... like in the case of the st. louis rams ... the group is going to try to keep the team in oakland. targeted an arco store in stockton... and the store's surveillance camera caught what police think is an 11-year old boy on camera. it happened in broad daylight monday afternoon... one camera showed the boy rolling up on his skateboard and pacing outside the store before he made his move. he then rushed in--with a gun in hand--demanding money from the cashier. < "she yelled for one of our co-workers in the back. after that once she yelled, he took off. she couldn't believe that someone this young would be doing something this crazy" >( james ) officials say the parents could potentially face charges if they own a gun that the child had access to. ( james ) happening now... police are looking for the driver who hit and injured two people in walnut creek. it happened last night near the intersection of north main street and. second avenue. there is no word on the victims conditions this morning and police have not released a description of the driver they are looking for. handling the prosecution of the most recent case - noe saucedo. sacedo of pittsburg, now charged with 2 counts of murder, and posession of a controlled substance, and evading a peace officer in last weeks horrendous crash in antioch. the two young girls, lenexy and camilia both died due to injuries suffered in the crash. back in november, this devastating crash - where four family members died, including two teen boys, joe and baden. the group was coming back from a basketball game, when this man, fred lowe allegedly plowed into their car. the boys' fathers also killed. lowe, had a several prior dui convictions and was driving on a suspended license he is in custody, and his case is moving through the court system. and then this case, back in june - where this man lemuel wilson now faces multiple murder charges for killing brothers vincent and lorenzo in concord.

"cemy." a good samaritan found the malnourished dog. cemy was chained to the fence with an electrical cord. he had no food or water. he was tied so tightly to the fence... that he didn't have enough slack in the cord to lay down. now... he needs a home. ( darya ) the vet says despite the mistreatment -- the dog has only a few skin issues. for now... cemy will remain under the care of the humane society. but it's likely that he will be ready for adoption on friday.
