cause for six small fires... all of them ignited hours before the tubbs fire last october.good evening i'm jr stone.(justine) and i'm justine waldman. investigators are pointing to sparking pg&e power poles and strong wind.kron4 's ella sogomonian is live in the newsroom with details. this is not to be confused with the larger north bay fires the cause revealed tonight is specific to a half a dozen that erupted within santa rosa city limits well before. five of the six fires investigated in this report ignited around 8pm on october 8th before the larger tubbs, nunns, or atlas fires so those are still under investigation. the fires in this report burned 10-12 acres and destroyed at least four homes a commercial ilding and an out building and playground at montessori school at three differeent locations: sullivan way, brush creek road, and guerneville road. firefighters who responded to the flames
report they saw sparks coming from pg&e utlity poles but it was essentially the strong wind that night they blame for the widespread damage. sot: paul lowenthal, santa rosa fire department // "the investigator identified there were sparks that had omitted from the utility but definitely identified the fact that had it not been for wind especially the significant winds that we had that night we wouldnt have had the circumstances that we did meaning that if we didnt have the wind we wouldnt have had the fire."((continuing vo))to try and give perspective for those still seeking closure on what caused the larger tubbs, nuns and atlas fires lowenthal explained these were smaller and were contained quickly so it's going to take much longer for calfire investigating those fires to reveal a cause. pg& e couldn't get back to us in time for comment. live in the newsroom ella sogomonian kro n4 news.

(jrstone) investigators are on the scene in south carolina after two were killed and more than 100 injured in an early morning train crash involving amtrak and c-s-x freight trains. kim hutcherson from our partners at c-n-n has more. an amtrak train headed to florida from new york and carrying nearly 150 people crashed into a c-s-x freight train... derailing several passenger cars and the lead engine in cayse (casey) south carolina early sunday. two people were killed and
more more than 100 others injured.amtrak identified the dead as the train's engineer and conductor.no one appears to have been aboard the c-s-x train at the time of impact. south carolina's governor addressed the situation.sot gov. henry mcmaster, south carolina"the csx was on the track that it was suppose to be on. it appears that the amtrack train was on the wrong track."the national transportation safety board are on the scene investigating. a source with knowledge of the investigation says investigators are focusing on the signal systems and whether they were working properly. this is the latest deadly incident involving an amtrak train.in december, an amtrak train derailed near dupont, washington killing three.i'm kim hutcherson reporting. (jr stone) a local hospital was able to repurpose one of their flu tents to use as a triage center to treat the wounded. lexington county officals are estimating about 5-thousand gallons of fuel were spilled, but say that there is no threat to the

(jr) a lawsuit against uber is set to begin in a san francisco courtroom this week. google's former self- driving car project, waymo, is seeking up to one-point-eight billiion dollars in damages against the ride-sharing app. waymo alleges that a former google employee stole "trade secrets" and shared them with uber. uber claims the allegations are "meritless" and absolutely false. opening statements will begin tomorrow. star-studded benefit concert for victims of the thomas fire took place over the weekend. (jrstone)it's expected to raise at least a half million dollars.reporter senerey santos has the story. thousands of people coalesced in downtown ventura's plaza park on saturday for a night of big-name musical entertainment powered by a serious purpose.about 5,000 people packed the park for the sold-out thomas fire benefit festival, which starred performances by grammy award- winning singer olivia newton- john, acclaimed actor kevin costner and his band modern west, superstar
singer-songwriter colbie caillat, swing revival band big bad voodoo daddy, and three-time platinum hip-hop and rap artist super duper kyle.put together by local community members and organizations, the benefit was expected to raise at least half a million dollars for victims of the recent thomas fire, said kevin clerici, executive director of downtown ventura partners, which is acting as fiscal receiver for the funds. sponsors underwrote the entire cost of the event and the artists performed free of charge, allowing every penny of the proceeds to go to those in need, he said.all the artists performed at the benefit free of charge, organizers said. many, including costner, spoke onstage about the hardship caused by the fire, which destroyed hundreds of homes. "we often don't know what to do when this happens, there's no words. but i'd like to say we're the only species on the planet that when something goes like this, we might not know what to say but we know to gather," said costner, whose set included songs called "the sun will rise again" and "stand strong."

(jr stone) the search is on for a man responsible for attacking a de anza college student on two different occasions.(justine)the suspect is described as a white man in his late 30's or early 40's. about 5 foot 11, 200 pounds with silver hair. as kron 4's ali reid reports, these attacks are being investigated as felony hate crimes ... 7-12deejea smith / hate crime victimdeejea smith tells me he no longer feels safe attending classes at deanza college.i don't go to a class without an
escort. i don't go to or from my car without an escortwhile walking up the stairs at the flint parking structure on january 24th, dj says this man seen here in a sketch . walked past him, shouted an anti-gay slur then punched him in the face.deejea smiththe second he saw me he screamed fáááát and punched me straight in the face and then i was knocked out.d-j was treated for a concussion and head injury. he says the friday before, he was knocked out from behind. the person in that incident also screamed the same derogatory term. but because d-j is partially deaf, he couldn't tell if it was the same individual. but it was the same parking structure, and same as before at night. i could see my car. it was within arms length. and came from behind, hit me in the back of the head and knocked me downsince then the victim has withdrawn from all but 2 of his classes which are both during the day. he makes sure to leave campus before the sun goes down.i feel like i can no longer call this place a safe space.in a
statement, the school says in part "we are saddened and angered that such an incident could occur on our campus, which is deeply committed to inclusion."it goes on to say that both on and off campus resources have been provided for d-j. but the victim says none of that has helped.the resources they gave me for outside has nothing to do with me. they gave me a pamphlet for aids rejuvenation. that has nothing to do with what happened to methe on-campus police department says officers have increased patrols on campus, both on foot and in vehicles. and that neighboring law enforcement agencies are also on the lookout for the suspect. meanwhile, d-j is set to see a school psychologist sometime this week.reporting in cupertino ali reid kron 4 news. (justine) a shooting in san jose sent one woman to the hospital. this happened around midnight on cadillac drive near highway 17. police found the woman suffering from at least one gunshot wound. she was
taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. the condition of the woman is unknown at this time. no arrests have been made. (j.r.) another large sideshow in oakland early this morning. police cited numerous drivers and towed a number of vehicles. you can see some of the vehicles that were taken away in this video. police reported the sideshow around 2 o'clock this morning ... in the area of high street and foothill boulevard near fremont high school. according to police, spectators broke windows of businesses and threw bottles at officers. last weekend there were two major sideshows in the east bay. this is surveillance video from the chp chopper that was monitoring one of those two in oakland. someone there pointed a green laser pointer at the chp helicopter. one person was arrested in that case. in richmond there was a sideshow last sunday as well. an officer was hit and suffered a head and shoulder injury. two people were
eventually arrested in that case. (justine) police arrested a suspect accused of breaking into cars at the rockridge bart station early this morning. a witness says they saw the man break into multiple cars in the bart parking lot. police later arrested andrew friedman of oakland on suspicion of auto burglary and possession of stolen property. officers say a total of five vehicles were broken into. (justine) jack walcott is a homeless man who's just trying to get by. he's also very talented. you may have seen photos of "jack jack" on social media -- his balancing acts have made him something of a local celebrity. reporter nicole comstock has the story from stockton.

the side of a freeway their intentions were good trying to feed the homeless but we have some obvious precautions we need to think about the san jose office of the california highway patrol get calls for a lot of people legally and illegally stopping on california freeways a lot of times we get reports pedestrians that are on the freeway and sometimes drivers will call it in that they are actually trying to cross the freeway to get to the other side stopping because you have a flat tres, acceptable like this driver the tire was shredded but the driver already called roadside assistance the california highway patrol has seen a lot of things ...that being said i personally haven't seen a picnic on the side of the road before but i have stopped for drivers on the side of the road usually to make a quick phone call to send out a quick text or maybe look at their
gps and while it turned out not to be a picnic from the someone driving on the freeway myself included that exactly what it looked like stopping along side unnecessarily causes some risk that is not really needed that swerves off the road that could possibly collide with them of if someone has a blown out tire possibly swerves off the road as well the chp did respoond the the group and they were cited for making a non- emergency stop which carries a 238 dollar fine and 1 point but the fact is, no matter how intentions are. you can't help anyone if you get hit by a car . in san jose stanley roberts kron 4 news adlib sports (justine) the
