(justine) and i'm jr stone. today... law enforcement was in full force... looking for people driving under the influence after the big game. kron 4's hermela aregawi spent the afternoon with some of the officers on duty... she joins us live with details. chp officers are certainly be busy tonight now that the game is over. we are told there are additional officers patroling the streets and highways.. looking for distracted and drunk drivers.

a busy super bowl sunday for officers in san francsico.they expect to make a lot of dui arrests.. as people make their way home after the game.. officer joaquin arias/chp san franciscowe are looking for quick movements, abrupt breaking, unable to maintain their lane right, weaving within their lane, they can be moving out of their lane, quick changes,..we look inside to see if they have their seatbelt on, if they are texting, if they are looking down if they are on their phone, on their maps looking down not looking at the road last year on super bowl sunday.. chp made 247 dui arrests statewide.one person died and 41 others were injured in alcohol-related crashes.officer vu williams/spokesman, chp san franciscowe are hoping that people are responsible and they use the multitude of other options they have to get around. rideshares, muni, bart, designated drivers.once a stop is made.. officers say there are tell-tale signs of

someone driving under the influence.officer joaquin arias/chp san franciscoso a lot of time you can see it just by their eyes, we contact tons of people every day so we see what regular eyes look like so when we see someone who is impaired, it's red its watery you can see it..the second thing we also look for is out sense of smell so we smell alcohol. a lot of time as soon as you roll down the window, alcoholic beverage is emitting from the vehicle officers reminding people if you are caught driving under the influence, you can be sent to jail.. and pay up to 10-thousand dollars in fines. reporting live in san francisco hermela aregawi, kron 4 news. (justine)(oncam last month... chp officers arrested more than 300 people across the bay area for driving under the influence. it was part of the "enough is enough" zero tolerance campaign. chp says 13 of those arrests were solely marijuana-related. (jr) a man was arrested on friday night for driving under the influence in petaluma.

you can see the truck on its side in these photos. when police arrived on scene, they found the driver stuck on the passenger side of his truck. officers say john barella was traveling southbound on elm drive when he lost control and crashed into a parked car. barella blew more than double the legal limit. he was arrested for a d-u-i. (j.r.)santa rosa firefighters now know the cause for 3 smaller fires that erupted hours before the tubbs fire last october.(justine) investigators are pointing to sparking pg&e power poles and strong wind.kron4 's ella sogomonian is live in the newsroom with details. fire investigators believe it was pg&e utlity poles seen giving off sparks that were a catalyst to the flames but say it was ultimately the gusts of wind that are to blame. santa rosa fire investigators believe half a dozen fires that were ignited and put out within santa rosa city limits on october 8th hours before

the tubbs fire were sparked by utility poles. sot: paul lowenthal, santa rosa fire department // "we know that given the winds there was a significant amount of debris that was blowing around. coming in contact with power lines we had power lines that were reported as slapping together."firefighters who responded to the flames report they saw sparks coming from pg&e utlity poles but it was essentially the strong wind that night they blame for the widespread damage. sot: paul lowenthal, santa rosa fire department // "the investigator identified there were sparks that had omitted from the utility but definitely identified the fact that had it not been for wind especially the significant winds that we had that night we wouldnt have had the circumstances that we did meaning that if we didnt have the wind we wouldnt have had the fire."the fires in this report burned 10-12 acres and destroyed at least four homes a commercial building and an out building and playground at montessori school at three differeent locations: sullivan way, brush creek road, and guerneville road. before the larger tubbs,

nunns, or atlas fires so those are still under investigation by calfire.pg&e responded to kron4 saying there has been no determination on the causes of the fires and we remain focused on doing everything we can to help sonoma county recover and rebuild. our thoughts are with everyone impacted by these devastating wildfires. live in the newsroom ella sogomonian kro n4 news. (jr stone) a student at de anza college in cupertino was the victim of a what authorities are calling a hate crime.(justine) as kron 4's ali reid reports... authorities are looking for a white man in his late 30's or early 40's. about 5 foot 11, 200 pounds with silver hair. deejea smith tells me he no longer feels safe attending classes at deanza college.i don't go to a class without an escort. i don't go to or from my car without an escortwhile walking up the stairs at the flint parking structure on january 24th, dj says this man seen here in a sketch . walked past him, shouted an

anti-gay slur then punched him in the face.deejea smiththe second he saw me he screamed fáááát and punched me straight in the face and then i was knocked out.d-j was treated for a concussion and head injury. he says the friday before, he was knocked out from behind. the person in that incident also screamed the same derogatory term. but because d-j is partially deaf, he couldn't tell if it was the same individual. but it was the same parking structure, and same as before at night. i could see my car. it was within arms length. and came from behind, hit me in the back of the head and knocked me downsince then the victim has withdrawn from all but 2 of his classes which are both during the day. he makes sure to leave campus before the sun goes down.i feel like i can no longer call this place a safe space.in a statement, the school says in part "we are saddened and angered that such an incident could occur on our campus, which is deeply committed to inclusion."it goes on to say that both on and off campus

resources have been provided for d-j. but the victim says none of that has helped.the resources they gave me for outside has nothing to do with me. they gave me a pamphlet for aids rejuvenation. that has nothing to do with what happened to methe on-campus police department says officers have increased patrols on campus, both on foot and in vehicles. and that neighboring law enforcement agencies are also on the lookout for the suspect. meanwhile, d-j is set to see a school psychologist sometime this week.reporting in cupertino ali reid kron 4 news. (justine) an undercover sting nets 13 -suspected unlicensed contractors ... allegedly trying to take advantage of people already victimized in the north bay wildfires. as kron 4's maureen kelly reports - the sonoma county district attorney plans to make an example of these contractors. don't do what they did but we're gonna come after youthis weekend the contractors state liscense board brought a number of people advertising on craigslist as contractors to this santa rosa house

damaged by the fire and asked for bids. the bid for basically the same job very from 850 all the way to $13,000. so they're all over the board it really is par for the course for unlicensed contractors because there's no saying these people know what they're doing now 13 people are facing misdemeanor charges of illegal advertising, and 12 are facing felonies ....10 of which are for contracting without a liscense...and because of the recent diaster....they are facing stiffer penalities. the penalty is stiffer right now we are under a disaster declaration so it is a felony. it's punishable by a term of three years.more stings are planned as the rebuilding effort ramps up.....but every week state investigators like this man here are out conducting compliance checks...making sure those helping fire victims rebuild are legit. he says they are already seeing unliscenced tree removal and debris cleanup out here.but expects to see a lot more of this type of shady conduct as the work

leaders are putting on a benefit festival...to help raise money for victims of the thomas fire. actor kevin costner's modern west band...was just one of many big name artist that came to perform at a benefit concert in ventura county. the city of ventura...was hit hard by the thomas fire...destroyin g more than 1,000 structures and leaving hundreds of people without homes. (sot) all profits from the benefit concert...are going towards fire victims.

(justine) a man is behind bars tonight...accused of carrying a loaded gun... marijuana...and 38 grams of heroin in santa rosa. 37-year-old tyler harrison smith was arrested thursday afternoon on cleveland avenue...at the hotel santa rosa. a sheriff's deputy patrolling the area noticed a man going through a duffle bag in a lexus. officers say they found 38 grams of heroin...a loaded handgun..ammu nition...a stun gun..and marijuana in harrison's posession. (justine) a sideshow in the east bay results in towed cars and several tickets... what police are doing to crack down on the illegal activity.

(j.r.) another large sideshow in oakland early this morning. police cited numerous drivers and towed a number of vehicles. you can see some of the vehicles that were taken away in this video. police reported the sideshow around 2 o'clock this morning ... in the area of high street and foothill boulevard near fremont high school. according to police, spectators broke windows of businesses and threw bottles at officers. last weekend there were two major sideshows in the east bay. this is surveillance video from the chp chopper that was monitoring one of those two in oakland. someone there pointed a green laser pointer at the chp helicopter. one person was arrested in that case. in richmond there was a sideshow last sunday as well. an officer was hit and suffered a head and shoulder injury. two people were eventually arrested in that case.

(justine) police say a man has died after an early morning shooting in oakland. it happened around 11 a-m yesterday on market street near the oakland-berkeley border. when officers arrived, they found one man suffering from a gunshot wound. he was taken to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries. his name has not been released pending the notification of his family. the shooting is still under investigation. (jr) a shooting in san jose sent one woman to the hospital. this happened around midnight on cadillac drive near highway 17 and castlemont elementary school. police found the woman suffering from at least one gunshot wound. she was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. the condition of the woman is unknown at this time. no arrests have been made. a half mile away...a woman walking on sutter avenue saw a mountain lion frolicking around. luckily the animal... didn't show any aggressive behavior.... it ran off. officers are currently combing the area... looking for the two cats. (justine) police arrested a suspect accused of breaking into cars at the rockridge bart station early this morning. a witness says they saw the man break into multiple cars in the bart parking lot. police later arrested andrew friedman of oakland on suspicion of auto burglary and possession of stolen property. officers say a total of five vehicles were broken into.
