several fires actually broke out earlier today in antioch and pittsburg at the los medanos community college...a fire spread rapidly through dry vegetation and into some trees. firefighters say they got to the fire before it could get to homes. just an hour earlier...there was another spot fire on the side of highway 4. fires like these have been a concern for firefighters who say dry conditions and hot temperatures create a dangerous mix.

bristow, virginia, about 30 miles outside washington.it was founded by former washington redskins coach joe gibbs in 1986 - and one of its primary roles is to house unaccompanied immigrant minors. today, it is also sheltering children separated from their parents at the border because of the president's policy.many arrive here in an extremely fragile emotional state. gary jones/ceo, youth for tomorrow: "they've been physically beaten. many of the girls have been sex trafficked and sexually abused, sexually exploited. many of the boys have been threatened with their lives if they don't sell drugs." (pam) an east bay family is doing all they can for their baby boy ... who has been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.(ken)kron 4's ella sogomonian met with benjamin and his mom at kaiser hospital in oakland today where he just had a blood transfusion...she joins us live in san francisco with their story.ella this must be hard both emotionally and financially... it is the rutherford family has been in and out of the hospital for the past 3 and a half months...and although insurance is helping a lot benjamin's mom says she's had to drop work and the costs feeding the family as well as travel really adds up.

sot: shannon rutherford, mom// " i dont think a lot of people realize how much a cancer diagnosis really does impact your family and your finances." in late february two year old benjamin was diagnosed with life threatening stage 4 neuroblastoma cancer that's attacked his nervous system. sot: shannon rutherford, mom// "he just kind of jumped into my husband's arms and my husband noticed right away there was something wrong there was a large mass on his abdomen and took him to the er and within two hours they were using the word cancer."ben's mother says her youngest of four children was most likely born with the hard-to-cure disease out of a gene abnormality.ben had surgery to remove the mass along with 1 kidney because the tumor was growing...and has had 5 rounds of chemotherapy.but once the chemo stops his mom says the cancer will come back...with a 40% chance of survival.the east bay family has had a lot support so far.sot: shannon rutherford, mom// "the community has come forward to

arrested on suspicion of willfully causing or permitting a child to suffer great bodily injury or death. the mendocino county sheriff says the young mother left her 18 month old son inside a her car for 10 hours while visiting a friend in willits. they were called to the scene after 1:30 wednesday afternoon. by that time the tempature outside the car was 80 degrees.the website noheatstroke-dot-org says it's the first child vehicular heatstroke so far this year in the state. heartbreaking i have three kids i couldn't imagine putting my kids in that situation i could don't know what's going through peoples minds i don't think they mean the worst but i think that people underestimate what he can do to people and as tempatures around the bay are expected to heat up....local law enforcement ask that parents be mindful of their little ones.. if you're if it's outside it's 800 after sometime 2030 minutes inside of the car can go to 130 so people don't think about that (maureen)outside this temperature guage on my smart phone reads 91 degrees but it feels like 88 degreesbut it didn't take long for the red arrow on analog thermometer i placed on the dashboard inside my car to shoot higher than

(pam)(pam) new at ten: an oregon mother has been charged in her daughter's death, after the child died in a hot car. police say, the 21- month-old girl was in a car for several hours yesterday. according to court documents, nicole marie engler -- a nurse practitioner -- told officers she drove to work at evergreen family medicine and left her daughter in the back seat... thinking she had dropped her off at daycare. engler told police ... when she returned to her vehicle around 4 p-m... she found the child in the backseat, unconscious and blue. the child was taken to the hospital where she later died. authorities have charged the 38-year-old mother... with second- degree manslaughter, with criminal negligence. lawrence karnow: it was a hot day for much of the bay area

(pam) new at ten: new information about an arson fire in southern california. this is video from the house fire in temecula in 2016. new documments now show, the operator of the adult- care facility sent a text to a friend apologizing before he shot three developmentally disale men, set the building on fire and then turned the gun on himself. the fire killed a fourth disabled man and burned all five people recognitiion. investigators haven't identified a motive for the killings. (pam) new video tonight of a police officer in ohio who was fired for using the badge to deal with personal issues with his daughter's boyfriend.(ken)the officer tried to arrest him during a traffic stop last month.as jack shea report, the incident was caught on police cameras.

k(ken)the investigation also found that kovach lied to his supervisors about the incident. (ken) eight passengers are suing southwest airlines over the mid-air engine failure that left a woman dead in april. jennifer riordan was almost sucked out of a plane window when debris from the engine broke a window during the flight. she was pulled back in but died later at the hospital. investigators found that a fan blades were missing from the engine that failed. plaintiffs say they have serious injuries including hearing loss and post traumatic stress disorder. after the incident...southwest gave all 144 passengers 5-thousand dollars a 1- thousand dollar credit toward southwest airfare, as well as transportation to their final destination. southwest and three of the other companies declined to comment on the lawsuit.
