found in a building recently completed. the construction team believes this is an isolated incident that will not affect the entire terminal. at this point in time we don't know what the cause of the crack is. we know the building is safethe transbay center is separated into 3 different buildings ... west, center, and east. the beams in question are on fremont street on the east side, east building fire proofing was applied in june 2016. at the time, the group says there were no signs of strain or cracking during final inspection. the question is ... at what point could this have happened?it's hard to discern right now what caused it. it could be a fabrication, welding, installation or design issue. every piece of steel in the building was fabricated in the u-s ... from 7 different companies. right now the department of buildings has no enforcement role under the building code, due to the fact that t-j-p-a is a quasi state agency with full authority over its building.our goal right now is to fix this as soon as possible so we can open the transit center for public usestandupalthough the transbay authority doesn't believe additional cracks exist, a peer review of the entire design will be conducted to ensure the transit center is completely safe.reporting live from san francisco ... ar ... kron 4 news.

other thefts. kron four's terisa estacio reports. terisa estacio, reporting, emeryville. kron four news has learned at least 7 people were taken into custody in connection with busting a ring associated with stealing from dozens of apple stores. this comes on the heels of a high stakes crime here in emeryville tuesday, and a case out of palo alot. - where police say in both cases, packs of young males raced into apple stores and took off with ipads and the latest iphone that runs close to a thousand dollars each. thefts at apple stores are at an all time high.... a north bay resident shared this video he took as the crime unfolded right in front of him... and later he shared this video exclusively with kron four news, showing the arrest of one suspect. a month ago, the apple store in corte madera was hit and images of suspects released. late wednesday, oakland police announced it assisted outside law enforcement by arresting multiple indidivuals on criminal warrants. and that the arrests are are in connection with large scale crimes throughout california... they would neither confirm or deny the cases were directly involved in apple thefts. kron four news has also learned that california department of justice is involved and more information with be realeased on thursday. thefts at apple stores have plagued the bay area... on here in emeryville,

the cdc says that nationwide 80,000 people died from the flu and flu related problems. that's the highest total is decades. in an average year, there are 12,000 to 56,000 flu related death nation wide from the flu. last year there were about 80,000. california and the bay area were also hit hard. now, health officials are hoping to save lives by getting people vaccinated early. sotlast season was a particulary severe flu season. dr. julie stoltey is an infectious disease physician with the san francisco department of public health. she says that last winter in san francisco at least 4 people, probably more, died from complications related to the flu. she says it's difficult to predict when the influenza virus will strike and how bad it will be.sotit's always unpredictable. we don't know how it's going to be until it occurs. with another flu season on the horizon, she says it's very important that everyone get vaccinated. a flu shot doesn't guarantee that someone will avoid getting sick, but it's the best protection we have.sotbut even in years where the flu vaccine is not 100 percent effective it's still prevent millions of illnesses in this country and 10s of thousands of hospitalizationsstoltey also reccomends getting a flu shot every year because the same flu virus doesn't spread all the time and the vaccine is adjusted accordingly.sotthe flu vaccine changes from year to year to try to address the circulating flu virus for each upcoming season.finally, if for some reason your unwilling or unable to get a flu vaccine dr. stoltey reccomends taking some common sense precautions. sotif you're sick, stay home from work or school. practice good hand hygiene. wash your hands. use hand sanitizers. cough into your sleeve. but, again, the flu vaccine is really our best protection against influenza.

lawrence karnow: it was another hot day inland in the upper 90s but much cooler near the coast with highs in the 60s. around the bay it was hazy and nice with highs in the 70s and 80s. today was likely the peak of the heat and we will begin to cool as early as tomorrow. on the satellite you can see the low spinnng off the coast and high pressure over california. the high will weaken tomorrow but it will still be hot inland with highs in the 80s to low 90s, 70s and 80s around the bay and 60s at the coast. temperatures reall begin to cool on friday with highs in the upper 70s in the warmest spots. there is a slight chance of a few shower north of the golden gate bridge on saturday. and there is another chance of showers on monday.

(catherine) today, for the first time, we got a look at the top floor of the salesforce tower, called the ohana floor..(pam) it will eventually be open to the public ... offering 360- degree views of the bay area. kron 4's gabe slate was on the media tour .. he gives us this sneak peek. stand up - i'm at the salesforce tower 61 floors up ohana floor on a clear day you can see the farallon islands off the west coast which are 27 miles out. on this day the fog was creeping in but that made the golden gate bridge look cool with it's orange tower popping out. the ohana floor offers 360 degree views of the bay area the cars stuck in traffic on the bay bridge looked small from way up here the floor is open.. you can walk around and take in the views through the floor to ceiling windows. it's almost like a lounge up here with the piano player and comfortable seating scattered throughout. and it smells good there are 24 living columns throughout the floor featuring 128 different plant species, with 48 different exotic types of

discovery.... a second cracked beam has now been found in the san francisco transit center .... leading the whole building and surrounding area... to be closed for another week.(pam) the 2 -billion dollar transit hub is across fremont street ... from another big high rise that has made headlines ..... the millenium tower.(catherine) the transbay authority says the crack in the new transit center is not related to the problems across the street. kron4's maureen kelly checked in with an independent structural engineer for a second opinion. (pam) the leaning millenium tower looms over the new tranbay transit center....but despite the close proximenty of the two massive buildings.....a structual engineer says it's highly unlikely that the cracked beams found in the transit center are related to the sinking being experienced at condo building. it doesn't appear that there's any plausible theory that this would be related to the foundation issues at the millennium tower. this crack is probably due to some very local issues in that structure. he says if it were true...we'd see a lot more evidence of settlement beyond the cracks.this would not be the first thing that would be noticed you'd see in the ground, you see distortions evidence in the floor slabs, in the wall systemshe says the cracks in the transbay center's steel girder could have a number of causes

.....including a defect in the material itself....defects in workmanship.....or a defect in the design of this very unusual building....supporting the very heavy weight of a 5 acre park. every cause that i can think of is unusual because of the very rigorous quality controls and quality assurance and processes that we put on modern structures especially steel structures nevertheless we can't rule them outhe says no matter what the cause the solution will likely involve adding more steel to strenghten the weaken spots....it could be a quick fix if the problem is specific to one area.....but if it's prevelant....than the investigation and the solution will need to be more extensive. maureen kelly kron4 news. (catherine) a florida family is warning other pet owners...after theirlittle dog was electrocuted after walking over a manhole cover.(pam) it happened because the dog had wet paws. but the family says, they feel it was negligence on part of the city. debbie and her husband lynn has just bought their great pyrenees dog- charlie... four months ago. but last week... a walk turned tragic when charlie was electrocuted when walking over a street light manhole. < debbie mcdermott, dog owner:"he had fell to the ground, then his tail was wagging and then lynn had to try to move him off of that he realized that he got shocked and then lynn's hand got shocked as he was moving charlie and then charlie started foaming at the mouth."> (pam) the family says, they now hope charlie's story can

(pam) new at 8. some parents in one louisiana school district are upset over a school spirit week event. they say, that event encourages bullying .... and stresses kids into having relationships.(catherine) that's after students were asked to wear green, yellow, or red to signify their relationship status. green...you're single. yellow means it's complicated...and red means you're taken. that sounded strange and troubling to some parents...who say middle school is too young to be thinking about relationships. the school board did not comment...alth ough one memberreportedly told a parent that it was too late to make changes. (pam) a los angeles area woman came home to find burglars breaking into her house. and when she went to confront the two men... one of the thieves sprayed her with pepper spray. neighbors say, thieves

have hit the area heavily... and that home break- ins happen all too often. some are frustrated and say.. police are not doing enough to combat the problem. several neighbors are fortifying their property with cameras and lights and fences and watch dogs. (catherine) an ohio city is considering a plan to jail owners if their dogs don't stop barking. the akron ordinance would be for repeat offenders only. it would increase the fee from one- hundred dollars to 250. and would allow for jail time up to 60 days. a councilman sponsoring the bill says the biggest problem is when people leave their dogs outside.. (pam) the hollywood hills residence of pop star 'rihanna' has been broken into twice in less than six- months. the most recent break-in happened tuesday night. no one was home at the time. police did not say if anything was stolen. one of the singer's employees says, a glass door in the rear of the home was broken. neighbors reported suspects fleeing the scene in a car.. after the break-in triggered the alarm.

back in may, an intruder spent 12 hours inside rihanna's home after breaking in. (catherine) more than 3 million people died from alcohol consumption in 2016 around the world.. that's according to a new report by the world health organization. (pam) the largest cause of death -- 28% -- was due to injuries. this was followed by 21% of deaths due to digestive disorders... and 19% due to cardiovascular diseases. reid binion breaks down the study. alcohol.it's legal. it's global.and it's responsible for one in 20 deaths worldwide. according to the world health organization,more than three million people died from alcohol consumption in 2016. men made up three-quarters of those deaths.of the estimated 2.3 billion people around the world who drink alcohol, 283-million of them suffer from alcohol related disorders. a recently published study found no amount of alcohol is good for you.any benefits from drinking are offset by increased risks for certain cancers and diseases.this is at odds with the long-held belief that moderate drinking has health benefits.despite members of the world health organization declaring the health problems associated with drinking a "public health priority"...the newest report predicts the number of people who drink alcohol will continue to increase over the next decade...for today's health minute, i'm reid binion.
