answering a call to help ensure underprivileged youth have something special to unwrap on christmas day, while teaching their own children the idea of giving back.the effort, called "dig deep sf," is unlike a typical toy drive. first, the "elves" fundraise tens-of-thousands of dollars from their networks of friends and colleagues. second, they take the money and purchase toys appropriate for older youth often overlooked in most toy drive efforts - children 8 to 12 years old - where a teddy bear or tonka truck just won't suffice. the dig deep elves hand-pick the toys that kids really want: ipods, make-up, cameras, sports jerseys and equipment - understanding that underprivileged kids have the same wishes for toys as more fortunate children do. to do this, they bring along their own children to guide the shopping choices: applying their own toy desires to help a child in need. the santa shopping spree takes place at target in colma / 5001 junipero serra blvd., where elves help purchase hundreds of toys using funds they've raised in the last two weeks. the toys are distributed at the salvation army's "toy & joy shop" on dec. 19.
