( darya )(ááá2 shotááá) a big story this morning . the ongoing government shutdown is limiting access to earthquake data. u-s-g-s researchers are not on the job. ( james ) this came to
light after a cluster of small earthquakes hit the east bay this week. kron 4's justine waldman has more. peggy hellweg / uc berkeley seismology lab 44 dur 06 justine waldman 1:06 end dur 10 sots "it woke me up this morning, the building was shaking, i told my wife, you know what to do."people in the east bay felt the two early morning earthquakes this week. both shaking was centered on the hayward fault.so could these minor quakes be the sign the big one is coming?peggy hellweg / uc berkeley seismology labsot for the last 30 years nothing has happened after of these clusters of earthquakesat the uc berkeley seismology lab peggy hellweg .. has taken on a bigger role at looking at the recently collected earthquake data.that is because the u.s. geological survey office in menlo park is closed during the government shut down.while computers there are collecting information, no humans are at work to look at the data.this is impacting studies into forecasting big quakes... yet, sot the earthquake will happen sometime and it could happen tomorrow do i expect it no would i be surprised no right now, there is only enough
funding to run the sesimolgy lab at cal until february. leaving questions as to how earthquake information will be analyzed after that...sot predicting what they do in washington is even more difficult than predicting earthquakes (justine) it is important to note, if there was a huge earthquake, staff at the usgs would be called back to newsroom justine waldman kron 4 news. ( james ) happening today... the second harvest food bank will be handing out food to janitors employed by nasa's ames research center who are affected by the shutdown. the distribution will be at 8:30 this morning at the s-e-i-u regional office in san jose. last week... other furloughed employees at the ames research center were givn rebates on their union dues to help during the shutdown. but a

or screamed, like... that? it's time to make some magic for as low as $70 per person, per day. ( darya )the rain may have fizzled out for now... but c-h-p says you still have to be cautious of wet roads.( james ) kron 4's dan kerman explains how driving after a storm... can still be very dangerous. drivers in the east bay found the sun trying to peak through on thursday... but the highway patrol says that's giving them a false sense of security.sot officer sean wilkenfeld/chp :08 this is one of the worst times because the rain has stopped or is slowing down people think they can start drving as fast as they want but its not going to work out to well becuase the roads are still wet.and during our ride along it didn't take long to find an
example of that.sotthis man slammed into the rear of another vehicle that had slowed down... destroying the front of his car. luckily airbags deployed and no one was injured... but the chp says it's a good reminder to slow down and allow extra stopping distance between you and the car ahead, both during and after a storm.sotand we want to remind people to turn our headlight on not just so you can see but so you can be seen by other drivers, on the freeway theres a spray that can be kicked up by rear lights are on everyone can see youas well.standup dan kerman/ bay plaza 104and sincethis is not the end of the rainy season the highway patrol also says now as good a time as any to get your tires checked... without good traction they say you stand little chance during the storm (james)( darya ) welcome back. let's get a check of the weather this morning...
when i see you on monday we'll be buzzing about the superbowl: the four contenders will battle it out on sunday the rams and the saints play in the superdome. the patriots and chiefs play at arrowhead which is somewhere underneath all this snow. they shoveled it out and had to re-sod the whole field cuz it was such a
mess. how come the rest of the country can fly in a blizzard but we can't handle rain, wind or fog.. in fog city? sfo looks fine right now but we had 3 and a half hour delays during the storm this week.. and if you travel a lot.. you know that's nothing new.. but i do have some new nubmers:sfo ranks 29th out of 30 major airports in on-time arrivals and we're 27th worst for
departures. and if you want to know why.. sfo has a map for that: this shows the runway configuration: two sets of parallel runways, too close together that cross in the middle.. complicated but it works like clockwork in clear, calm, dry weather.. which means "never".. as soon as mother nature sneezes they have to stagger then planes.. so if you wanna get there on time..do what i do.. whenever you can try to fly out of oakland or san jose.. and pack light.. checking bags costs you more and slows you down on the other end. sonny gray could be catching a flight back to the bay area.san francisco is showing interest in the a's old ace. he gave oakland five good seasons but he hasn't done well in the bronx. the giants sure could use another top notch starting pitcher... since madbum, cueto and samardzila have all had
serious injuries the last couple of years. well the giants could use a lot of things. the warriors should have a fog machine tonight in l-a.. so the boogieman can make a dramatic entrance. i've always wanted a fog machine.. and walk up music.. or maybe one of those banners you break through.. anyway, we'll see how he gels with the guys tonight when they play the clippers. but wow, he looks good on paper. you know what else looks good but might be trouble? the 10 year challenge.. steph and ayesha are doing it.. as are millions of post a picture years ago compared to today so we why don't we look that good? security the more data you share the more of a target you become. (nat)"glass" is seen as extraordinary enough to scare off any new competition. writer-director m-night shyamalan combines his stars and storylines from two- thousand's "unbreakable" and 20-15's "split" in the thriller, which is generating a lot of buzz, if not great reviews. analysts expect "glass" to debut with 60-to-70 million dollars or more over the four-day weekend.(nat) "how is this possible? dammit, he's learning as he fights!" one other new film is expected to stir things up this weekend: "dragon ball super: broly." the latest entry in the japanese anime franchise opened on wednesday, and could earn 10-million dollars or more through sunday. in hollywood, i'm david daniel. seven day seven day
