paychecks are sent out. the deal that ended the standoff only goes until february 15-th. republican and republican and democratic leaders have until then to come up with a border security proposal. federal workers want lawmakers to find a permanent solution.

reopen later in the week. ranger-led programs also resume today, and entrance stations will be staffed as usual. senator kamala harris will be part of a town hall meeting happening today in iowa. it comes a day after an estimated 20-thousand people listened to her outline her plans for presidency in oakland. she held her official launch rally for the oval office yesterday afternoon. kron 4's sara stinson has the highlights. native senator kamala harris stood before nearly 20- thousand people to launch her campaign.other female political leaders attended in support of harris including san francisco mayor london breed and oakland mayor libby schaff.harris talked about her experience in the criminal justice system as a prosecutor, district attorney of san francisco and attorney general of california. senator harris addressed president trumps proposed border wall he claims will stop gangs from bringing crime into america.

( james ) happening today...the oakland unified school district could decide to close roots international academy. the possible move means 150 current sixth and seventh grade students would have to go to another school next year. the district says it will work with families to place kids in the e right school. this comes as the disctrict is facing a 30-million dollar deficit...it could close as many as 24 schools in the next few years. ( james ) this week, teachers in oakland could vote on whether to walk out. the vote will take place over four days, starting tomorrow. it comes after hundreds of teachers demonstrated in front of the district office in a sick- out last monday. they are demanding higher pay, smaller class sizes and more resources for students. teachers have prepared signs and banners in case they walk out. destroyed after a fire ripped through the garage of a home in pleasant hill. here is a picture showing the damge to the garage. the fire broke out at about 8:30 last night in the 400 block of saddlebrook lane. it took fire crews about 20 minutes to put out the flames ... but not before the fire destroyed two cars and did damage to the garage itself. the fire did not spread to the rest of the house. the driver suspected of dragging a teen during a hit and run accident is expected to be arraigned in court tomorrow. 36 year old leah conner is facing charges in this investigation. police say on january 2nd 14 year old carlos preito was left begging in the street after being hit by a car and dragged 4 blocks. he was riding his bike near the fruitvale bart station. sunday, the teen's community held a bicycle ride-out and fundraiser in his honor.

( james ) breaking news this morning --- san jose police are investigating a deadly hit and run off of alamden expressway near camden avenue. police say one man was killed in crash and they do not have a description of the other vehiclel. authorities

are telling people to use alternative routes --- because the area will be shutdown for the next two hours at least. ( james ) three people have died and at least 170 others were injured in a tornado that hit havana overnight. cuban president miguel diaz-canel posted these pictures of hime visiting areas hit by tornado. a government statement says the strong winds also caused flooding and damage to buildings. cuba's civil defense department asked people to remain indoors during the overnight hours. ( james ) police are looking for two men who bailed on their 4-thousand dollar botox bill in los angeles. amy johnson has the details. the aesthetic medical spa has posted the video and photos of the suspects on facebook .. ( james ) that was amy johnson reporting. doctor hau says they are working on new policies to make sure this doesn't happen again. disturbing revelations on how facebook tricked children and their parents into spending money on the social media platform. this was uncovered in 135 pages of documents from a 20-12 class-action case. the documents were unsealed by a federal judge. the report accuses facebook of encourging game developers to get kids to spend money without their parents' permission. the papers also accused that the company of refusing to issue refunds in some cases ... ... and that facebook would not try to block kids from spending money because it would reduce revenues.facebook has declined to comment ... but said in a statement that the company routinely examines its practices. boeing says it has conducted its first test flight of a driverless air

taxi. the test took place at a small airport in manassas, virginia. the aircraft is 30 feet long and 28 feet wide. according to boeing, the flight lasted less than a minute. no one was on board. the prototype is designed to fly up to 50 miles at a time using an electric propulsion system. baseball fans are mourning the loss of former san francisco giants owner and leader peter magowan. he is the man who was credited with leading the charge that kept the team in san francisco. magowan is the former president and managing partner of the san francisco giants, he was with the team from 19-93 to 2008. magowan propelled the giants into world class performance... by helping them become three time world series champions. he also helped bring barry bonds from the pittsburgh pirates and played a large part in getting the giants a new stadium. ( james ) magowan died at his home

two young girls more than a decade ago. 56-year-old gregory marshall was arrested in san jose thursday and charged with 24 felony counts for allegedly sexually assaulting two students at valley christian high school. both female students were 17 at the time. san jose police say marshall sexually assaulted the victims at work on school property sometime between 2004 and 2005. marshall was the after school track coach at branham high school in san jose. ( darya ) marshall also owns sports performance and fitness. he was booked into the santa clara county jail. ( james ) a judge is ordering the release of a woman convicted in the deadly stabbing of a 17-year-old newwark high school student. 25-year-old daniela guzman was sentenced to 15 years to life in state prison after

justice afoa was killed in 20-10. a new law led the judge to the decision to release guzman. it prohibits suspects from being liable for murder unless that person was the actual killer or had an intent to kill. guzman was convicted of second-degree murder, conspiracy to commit assault and gang enhancement clauses. the judge is ordering that her murder conviction be reveresed. guzman's brother... rafael tovar... and daniel howard are serving prison time in this case. ( james ) police in san francisco are looking for the twpeople who attacked a 64-year-old man and sent him to the hospital with head injuries. it happened just after nine-thursday night, in the mission terrace neighborhood, near the intersection of mission street and seneca avenue. police say, two men ran up behind the victim and hit him with an unknown object. the victim fell to the ground and lost consciousness. he was taken to the hospital with non- life threatening injuries. police have not released a description of the suspects. are looking for the man who robbed a metro p-c-s store. store. police say the suspect walked into the store around 4:30 saturday afternoon and pointed a gun at the clerk and demanded money and merchandise. police are asking anyone with anyone with information to give them a call. a bay area man is sharing his story after he fell to a scam. he says he's coming forward in hopes of keeping others from losing money. kron 4's maureen kelly has more. it's the same ring exactly here's the ring that paul pagliuso says was offered to him in exchange for $40 dollars in cash. it happened on sunday after he stopped for gas in yolo county off i-5 after he was approached by a man who he now believes to be part of a team of very prolific con artists. thin guy really really well- dressed, had a female passenger in the back that was really well-dressed with kids. he was talking really fast, kind of urgent and pulling this ring off his finger can i give you this ring for $40 cash i need $40 cash, my wallet got stolen my credit cards and all my cash and i

really need $40 cash to get homethe napa resident says he didn't want the ring....but felt compelled to help.seems like the christian thing to do would be to try to help a guy out without getting totally ripped off just in case so i gave them 30 bucks in gas i'll pump it into your car off my credit cardhe says the man insisted he take the ring and then left. it wasn't until pagliuso saw the exact same ring....in a news story about of the statewide scam alert issued by the c-h-p that he realized he'd been duped. and felt compelled to come forward...i want to people to be aware it's not just down south is apparently up north and probably everywhere in between. probably all over the i five corredor i would guess (standup)another kron four viewer says he fell victim to the same scam at the san jose gas station back in november. the chp says at this point they don't have any confirmed cases of these con artist working in the bay area but

return a 21-year-old man to louisiana to face charges in the shooting deaths of his parents and three others. over the weekend, authorities say dakota theriot (terry-oh) shot and killed his girlfriend... her father... and her brother in livingston parish. investigators say he then drove to his parents' home and also killed them. deputies caught up with him as he pulled to another relatives home and got out of the car with a gun. they were able to arrest him before he could use it. ( darya ) deputies say terry-oh's parents identified him as the shooter before they died. ( james ) the california highway patrol broke up a massive sideshow in north sacramento over the weekend. on saturday it shut down traffic in the area of antelope road and watt avenue.

the c-h-p headed to the scene with helicopters and multiple agencies responding. officers say they tried to make arrests as more than 100 people watched. a driver who police say drove away, lost control of his vehicle and collided with a parked car and then a fence. he was taken to jail.... miles away near national drive and north market boulevard the sideshow continued. police say after two hours, they were able to break it up and get the drivers to stop. ( james ) by the end of the night, chp officers made two arrests, impounded at least five cars and issued multiple citations. ( james ) today marks 33 years since the space shuttle challenger exploded. the tragedy occurred 73-seconds after lift-off. officials later determined that a rocket booster failure caused the

fuel tank to ignite. among the seven crew members killed on that fateful day was a teacher who would have been the first teacher to make it to outer space. hours after the explosion president ronald reagan addressed the nation. he honored the fallen crew saying they "slipped the surly bonds of earth" to "touch the face of god." happened just before 8 this morning on the 24-hundred block of grant street in concord. contra costa county fire says a call came in for a student bleeding. first responders took a 17-year old boy to a nearby hospital.no word on the victim's condition yet.concord police will be handling the investigation. we have a reporter on the way to the school.
