(grant) the fallout from the university bribery scandal is growing tonight. there's now a 500-billion dollar lawsuit related to it. good evening i'm grant lodes. (vicki) and i'm vicki liviakis. today two separate lawsuits were filed, one against the universities in question and the other from a bay area parent against the parents, coaches, administrators and admissions consultants tied to the case. are dramaticallay different, one seeks hundreds of dollars to pay for the cost of admissions applications, the other seeks half a trillion dollars.

bribery scandal lawsuits 031419 5 insertthe class action lawsuit filed wednesday in san francisco superior court is filed by a bay area woman and her son against 45 parents, coaches, administrators and admissions consultants.in the lawsuit jennifer kay toy says her son "graduated with a 4.2 grade point average.... applied to some of the colleges where the cheating took place and did not get in.... i'm now outraged and hurt because i feel that my son... was denied access to a college not because he failed to work and study hard enough but because wealthy individuals felt that it was ok to lie, cheat, steal and bribe their children's way into a good college." the lawsuit alleges negligent infliction of emotional distress, civil conspiracy and fraud. the lawsuit suggests 1- thousand people participated in the cheating scandal and than 1-million people people have been affected. as a result the suits seeks damages totaling no less than 500- billion dollars.in the meantime, a federal class action lawsuit filed wednesday and amended thursday is filed on behalf of a 4 college students and their parents

against admissions consultant rick singer and 8 universities including stanford that federal officials have tied to the bribery scandal. this suit alleges when these students applied for admission to these universities they didn't receive what they paid for an "admissions process that was fair and free of fraud bribery, cheating and dishonesty." the lawsuit says anyone who paid an application fee to any of the universities but was denied admission get their application fee returned. returned.application fee their application fee returned. city college ...affectionally known as harvard on the hill...has a lot of students working on transfering to 4 year universities.those who have been keeping up to date on the college admission cheating scandal are shaking their heads at the news....some tell me they are not surprised by the fact some rich parents allegedly paid bribes to get their kids into good schools....but they are shocked that they are actually getting prosecuted. the atheles here on campus are particularly distrubed by the allegations that kids who are not athelese got recruited onto elite college sports teams ....spots that could have gone to other people who actually put in the hard work. as a college athlete i find it disrespectful because we work hard to get where were at we try to go to states we try to go to nationals and photoshop someone's face on to somebody.

it's disrespectful if you just want money it's money but it's one thing to say your kids an athlete, parents of the week their kids at 5 am to go to practice we have to travel all the time and on the road 24 seven sometimes i've been playing football like over 12 years trying to get to that high-level and they're just giving kids spots on the team that i'm trying to get on it's really kind of crazy(maureen) one student told me....she hopes those found guilty these charges get actual jail time....rather than a slap on the wrist.maureen kelly kron4 news. (rob live) the defendant in this case is an undocumented immigrant who has been in and out of jail many times, re-igniting the debate about the lack of cooperation betweenlocal and federal authorities. but prosecutors were having none of that today but insisting that carlos carranza will not be getting out of jail ever again. here'smore.

inside department 23 on thursday afternoon, in a proceeding that lasted less than a minute, with no cameras present, 24 year old carlos arevalo-carranza, was charged with first degree murder, burglary and special circumstances that would sent him to prison for life. carranza is accused in the murder of 59 year old bambi larson, of san jose. police say carranza stabbed larson to death inside her knollfield way home. evidence includes surveillance video that shows him stalking his victim and her neighborhood. in a statement of facts, prosecutors say larson suffered deep stab wounds to her neck and torso. when arrested carranza had a 7-inch folding knife on him. carranza's dna matches blood evidence found at the crime scene and he was in possession of larson/s kindle and cell phone. outside the court, there was a brief statement from chief assistant district attorney jay boyarksy. jay boyarsky/chief assistant dist. attorney "....the whole community grieves with the larson family today, the second reason we are here is to let you now that mr carranza has been charged and it going to spend the rest of

his life in prison so that he can never hurt anyone again, our office will hold him accountable for this brutal murder so he can die in prison..."carranza's arrest led to the revelation that he is an udocumented immigrant with a long criminal history and had been repeatedly released from jail despite nine different detainer requests by federal immigration authorities.
