>> from the bay area's local news station. you're watching kron. 4 news at all. >> and now at 5, a san francisco police sergeant has been pulled off the streets for something he did off the job and at a pharmacy. good evening, everybody. thank you for joining us for kron 4 news at 5. i'm catherine heenan in for vicki liviakis and i'm grant lotus that police sergeant is now entering rehab. according to his attorney. >> he was arrested for allegedly robbing a san mateo pharmacy. >> kron four's dan kerman is in san mateo. and dan, what do we know tonight. >> well, what we know tonight is, as you mentioned, this

officer is now in rehab. according to his attorney. his attorney says that he has an opiate addiction and it is because of that that this whole instance was going in on in the first place. >> san mateo. police say it was about 06:00pm wednesday night when officers were called to a robbery at this rite aid. they say they encountered the suspect just outside the store when officers encountered him attempted to flee on foot. but our officers were able to thwart those efforts very quickly. >> it turns out the suspect arrested for robbery and resisting arrest is san francisco. police sergeant devan cole. this is video of him shot during a 2016 interview. cole is a 27 year member of the force. this is a really sad story. this is a this is a really well respected police officer. >> the way people describe him is this is just a really solid cole's attorney says the incident stems from his clients, ongoing secret addiction to opioids a condition that began during an on the job injury back in 2010

they were doing some what they call non bite work and as he put it, one of the dogs did not get the memo and the dog bit him through the calf's and incredibly painful injury that required a long rehabilitation he was prescribed prescription painkillers in large doses. if the evidence lines up and charges are filed against cole. those circumstances should have no impact on his prosecution. >> but prosecutors say it could and his ultimate sentencing when it comes to holding somebody accountable the prosecution side of criminal justice that we do is district attorney's. it's very important to us and everybody is treated the same. >> when it gets to sentencing everybody's different as to the reason that they committed their crime and to that extent that's where these details become very important. well, you know, the nature of the person do they have a what how did this come about that. they develop the addiction.

>> a san francisco police have put coal on unpaid administrative leave. his attorney says that he is entered rehab as of today, the prosecutor's office has just received the case from the police. they will review it. and if so, they will file charges likely next week. and if that happens, he will have his arraignment on the 18th of this live in san mateo. dan kerman kron 4 news, thank you, dan. >> now to the east bay pinole police say a 12 year-old is behind a shooting threat against a middle school. the no middle school staff alerted authorities to an email that came in on monday indicating there would be a shooting on the campus the following day officers identified a student and interviewed him. that is when they say the student confessed to making the threat, the 12 year-old has been cited for threatening violence on another person that will result in death or great bodily injury to occur on campus. he's been released to a parent. the department is working with the parent now to

provide resources to the student and family. and the south bay san jose police department employee who was arrested last month on suspicion of gun crimes has been arrested again this week for possession of child. denis shevchenko worked as a civilian service officer for the police department. police say they discovered a picture and videos of child while they were examining his electronic devices as part of their investigation into the gun crimes. both investigations are now ongoing. what could be a real game changer in the fight against the coronavirus could be just around the corner. >> pfizer says its experimental pill does greatly reduce the risk of hospitalization and death from covid kron four's rob fladeboe explains. >> pfizer on friday said its experimental antiviral pill for covid-19 cuts rates of hospitalization and death by nearly 90% in high-risk adults
