in the city. you can see the major retailers, all of them that were hit a series of thefts started on friday in san francisco. witnesses filmed the moment that thieves ran from the louis, the town store in union square things. look a lot different than past years. of course, there is now a heavy police presence out for everyone to see union square is where we find kron four's. dan kerman tonight with more. dan. >> well, pam and ken, a lot of businesses boarded up, not close but boarded up. just anticipating what could come next the same time, a lot more police officers throughout the day here in union square. as promised the area in and around union square was flooded with police officers again on monday. >> and it will continue to be for the foreseeable future. this after groups of thieves burglarized and vandalized more than a half dozen stores in the area on friday night, including the louis that on store. i think it's just so because i mean.

>> people are taking advantage of these beautiful stars that are open. and i think that it's just terrible people had to make a reservation to get into louis that on monday. >> and those downtown say despite the crimes they will continue to shop down year. >> do you still feel safe shopping down. >> yeah. it felt really good shopping year. retails really need to be supported specially activist, you know, and you know, the city has to the people who live here have hearing shop in help to make it. but some businesses like gump say this could be the last straw. you thinking of picking up and move it. >> everything's on the table right now. officials with gum say packing up and leaving is something they're considering it's disappointing to look across union square here. 5 weeks before christmas. and once again see all of our businesses. >> boarded up. and while they appreciate the added police presence. they say police can only do so much. they say it really comes down to the justice system.

>> we people to be held accountable for their actions and we need not only just speaks tough words but to follow up with strong action. >> again, lou, that onstar was kind of the centerpiece of this whole thing. you see it's right behind me close. now. they were open during the day today open again tomorrow, as we've mentioned, 9 people so far been arrested in connection with that friday. a series of burglaries. police say they expect more to come live in union square dan kerman kron 4 news. dan, thank you for that. another smash-and-grab, this time of the southland mall in hayward. >> police say about 9 people smashed glass cases at sam's jeweler stealing what was inside. >> kron four's. rob nesbitt talked with shoppers about the increase of these kinds of robberies and has their reaction and what mall management is saying tonight. police got the call just before 05:30pm, sunday. the thieves caught on camera

stealing from sam's jewelers in the mall was still open with shoppers all around. >> within seconds, this group and hooded sweatshirts use hammers. to smash open the display cases at sam's jewelers. according to hayward police 9 suspects got away with the loot leaving southland mall in 2 vehicles. a smash-and-grab happening at the exact time. kathy weaver had planned on doing her shopping sunday evening. just so glad i wasn't here because i was going to come here yesterday. it was it's awful. i don't know what i would do. weaver lives walking distance from the mall where she often does her shopping walking in monday morning to find sam's jewelers closed for the day was shattered display case is still visible inside. it makes me not want to come to the mall anymore. you know what a fight. had been in the way and then knocked me over. hayward. police say that the jewelry store was the only store in the mall that was targeted. they're working to determine if it was connected to other smash and grabs that happened in the bay area over the weekend. a spokesperson from south and mall says they're

disheartened by sunday's crime and that the mall is working with police to track down the 9 suspects like you just hope it can be stopped and i wish they could find people hayward police tell me that they are going through video of the smash and grab as well as eyewitness reports to try to find out more about the suspects and the 2 vehicles they fled in reporting in hayward. i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news. meantime, pleasanton police are telling us of what could have been another case of a jewelry store smash and grab. >> around one 20 yesterday morning. police say 9 people got inside the stone ridge shopping center by pushing a sliding glass door off its door track. police say they were caught in surveillance video going toward the area of a jewelry store. but immediately left say that metal security gate saw rather metal security gates in place. police say the suspects did not gain access to any of the stores at the mall and there were no other reported incidents of looting in pleasanton. >> sane in the east bay because of the recent smash-and-grab there, the

north stream in walnut creek is closing early all week. police say some 80 people rushed into that store and empty shelves before running away with merchandise just before closing time investigators say the suspects assaulted 2 store employees and use pepper spray on another employee police arrested 3 people in found a gun as well. however, dozens of others managed to get away cannabis businesses were also hit hard during the weekend crime wave in oakland, kron four's maureen kelly uptime surveillance video from one dispensary which was looted early sunday morning. it's a story you'll only see on kron 4. >> the owner of oakland's blunt and more dispensary near the oakland coliseum estimates that over a dozen burglars broke into his pot shop early sunday morning. you can see them looting the display cases here in this video. it started around 05:00am with a sideshow at 66 avenue and coliseum way. he says he has private security who called the

incident in to police 45 minutes the nuggets of the sinuses. but haven't come in yet. >> we want to you going to more. >> once the burglar started scaling the fence. his security arrived. 7 minutes later to chase them off all funds. a blunt who goes by the nickname tuck e says he is still trying to assess how much was taken, but he believes most of the product was dropped as the burglars ran away. it's a far cry from what happened to his business back in 2020 but is establishment was ransacked by what he believes was a much more organized gang of criminals. pd was distracted by civil unrest following the murder of george floyd. but he says he's heard about many other cannabis dispensaries and pot grow operations that have been hit over the past month with many happening just over this weekend following the acquittal of kyle rittenhouse, a group of cannabis business owners met this afternoon. glenn says they're fed up with paying high taxes and not getting much in the way of police response. we need action. we

need help. he's concerned. they may need to brace for another round of trouble as the ahmaud arbery case heads to the jury that talking not guilty. >> candidates will gather. candy. 100%. they're using, you know, these these pleas reason to have an arc and people. targeting businesses doesn't affect the guilty or not guilty. >> this afternoon. the oakland chief of police says he plans to meet with cannabis business owners on wednesday to talk about this past weekend's crime wave and steps they can take to improve security at their locations. maureen kelly kron 4 news and maine time in san leandro police are investigating an attempted robbery at a cannabis dispensary. this happened early this morning and blonde dispensary on fairway. drive. police say they got a call about several cars filled with people that pulled up to the dispensary. >> no one was injured. the suspects did not get away with

anything. police are looking to see if this incident is connected to other robberies at dispensaries in neighboring cities. police in san francisco are investigating 2 weekend homicides. the first happened just before 10 o'clock friday night. >> on connecticut street in for charles hill not far from the patrol recreation center. police say when they arrived on the scene, they found a 25 year-old man had been shot. they say he died at the scene. no arrests have been made and police have not released any information on possible suspects. the second homicide happened just after 1045 last night on geary street just a block away from union square police say 30 year-old man was stabbed several times. he was pronounced dead at the scene again, no arrests made and police have not released any suspect information. there's also a violent weekend in oakland with more shootings homicides and robberies. oakland police chief addressed the crimes today. kron four's catherine heenan joins us from the newsroom tonight with the details. catherine. yeah. boy, did he so frustrated open police chief leronne

armstrong. >> says there's a clear problem in the city of oakland saying at one point. >> we need help on saturday. the chief says there were 2 dozen incidents in just over 10 hours. he says that includes an armed carjacking that ended in a a deadly police shooting, a roving caravan of thieves that targeted at least 2 dozen businesses and attempted homicide. another shooting that killed a juvenile and sunday. police say they investigated 6 more shootings. chief armstrong says the police department desperately needs help from all city workers in order to fight the violence. >> nobody should have to live through this. asking council to step up and have a conversation about how they can support our effort to address public safety in the city. i'm also saying that it doesn't need to be more police. every city agency in oakland should be focused around violent crime. i don't care if you could if you drive a public works truck. i don't care if you if you pick up litter, everybody has to be

invested in making this community safer. we can't do it even if we were given resources, we couldn't get those resources in uniform any time within the next 18 months. we need help now. >> on top of the violence. the police was also talking about illegal sideshows on both saturday and sunday. the chief says more than 500 cars were involved. he says they're stepping up patrols this upcoming thanksgiving weekend in an effort to prevent more violence, more sideshows, kron four's amanda hari was at that news conference today. she says that show have more tonight on kron 4 news at 8 pam and ken. catherine, thank you. >> today, chief armstrong also mentioned that 3 people have been arrested in connection to the shooting of retired oakland police captain or c joyner. this is surveillance video from the shooting that took place back on october the 21st. it happened at a chevron gas station in west oakland when joiner was approached by several suspects who tried to

rob him. that's when the shootout occurred. joyner shot and killed one of the suspects and the others got away chief armstrong says one person has been arrested in houston 2 others arrested in sacramento. joyner was critically injured in that shootout. but he is now recovering. >> it is a busy week for travelers as americans head out of town for thanksgiving. the biden administration says vaccinated families can safely gather for the holiday. however, there are some exceptions to that news. >> plus kyle rittenhouse speaking out after being found not guilty on all counts, including intentional homicide. what he is saying in a new interview. >> and we're learning more about the suspect believed to be behind that shocking parade tragedy in wisconsin. what he's accused of doing moments before going on that rampage. >> and i'm rebecca strom in for lawrence karnow on this monday before the thanksgiving holiday. i will have your complete holiday forecast coming up after the break. stay wit

>> now to some coronavirus news on this monday night with thanksgiving just days away. the biden administration says vaccinated families can safely gather for the holiday and ditch the masks, the nation's top doctor doctor anthony fauci is still urging vigilance, though, as we head into the holiday season. new numbers do show cases are rising across the nation again. however, fauci says families where everybody is vaccinated can enjoy

thanksgiving safely experts say the vaccine along with boosters remain the gold standard at stopping the spread of new infections and severe illness. new data also show boosters can increase a person's immunity and significantly and quickly do so. >> the vaccines themselves still highly effective, but you want to make sure the durability of that protection is longer and that's the reason why you get boosted because we know know vaccine last forever. so the the protection starts to wane a bit and that's with the boost is all about. >> for those people who are still unvaccinated health officials say they need to keep wearing masks limit the size of their thanksgiving get-togethers and avoid travel. if at all possible governor newsome was back in the bay area today. he was urging people to get their booster shot from first. charles clifford has more on the governor's message. well, the number of coronavirus cases in california about a month ago was starting to go

up. but in the past 7 to 10 days new infections have actually leveled off. that's good news. but state health officials. >> are still worried that we could see a winter surge over the upcoming holidays on monday, governor newsom visited a vaccine clinic in san francisco's mission district. he also spoke to the press noting that 91% of eligible californians have received at least one dose of a covid vaccine. that's more than 58 million total doses that have been administered. but newsom says there's still work to do is encouraging all adults to get booster shots for parents to get their kids vaccinated for everyone to remember the pandemic isn't over. >> this is our sprint working our way into the holiday season to encourage and promote boosters to deal with waning immunity, continue to encourage people that haven't gotten a shot to get a shot, particularly as we enter into the holiday season. now, if you're interested in getting vaccinated or if you need a booster shot or you want to get your kids signed up for a shot. you can go to my turn dot ca dot gov and sign up there. you can also go to kron 4 dot com. we have links and information on our website as well. >> but for now in san francisco, charles clifford

kron 4 news. happening now, santa cruz counties. indoor mask mandate is back in effect in an intent. >> anticipation of a winter surge. the mandate went back into effect at midnight. once again, people are required to wear face coverings in public places offices. even in people's own homes when others are visiting and that is regardless of their vaccination status. this renewed mandate will remain in effect indefinitely, meaning the timeline for the mandate will be rolled back will depend on how the county does over the next few weeks and months. >> happening today in the south bay, former theranos ceo elizabeth holmes took the stand once again to defend herself in a criminal fraud trial in santa clara county last friday. she took the witness stand and tried to dispute the prosecution's portrayal of her as a greedy same obsessed fraudster holmes talked about her background as stafford and her decision to drop out and pursue her start-up idea holmes is accused of misleading

investors misleading patients and business partners into believing that her blood testing device would revolutionize the healthcare industry in actuality, the vice did not do anything. she promise according to experts, if convicted holmes could face 20 years in prison. >> following his acquittal on homicide charges kyle rittenhouse is speaking out for the first time in an interview with fox news. >> this case has nothing to do with and never had anything to do with race. it had to do with the right to self-defense. right. i'm not a racist person. i support the blm movement. i support peacefully demonstrating. >> rittenhouse went on to say he believes there is a lot of prop prosecutorial misconduct not just in his case but others on friday, wisconsin jury found rittenhouse not guilty on all charges after he shot 3 people killing 2 of them during civil unrest in february of 2020 in kenosha, wisconsin. the verdict triggered protests across the country.

>> authorities in wisconsin are searching for a motive meantime, after that suv plowed down a christmas parade killing at least 5 people and injuring dozens more, including children. this happened yesterday and waukesha a suburb of milwaukee. >> now we're learning more about the victims. the man accused of carrying out this tragedy. grant lotus live for us in the newsroom with an update on such a tragic saying grant. yeah, this hard going to be etched in the minds of so many and officials have identified the driver now has 39 year-old darryl brooks. he has a lengthy criminal record and was allegedly involved in a domestic disturbance right before that crash today the police chief said there is no evidence the yesterday's crash was a terror attack or that the suspects knew anyone at the parade. the chief said police were drawing up 5 charges of intentional homicide against brooks. here's his booking photo members of a dancing grannies club were among those killed

as was an employee of citizens bank. the chief identified those killed. as for women ages 52 to 79 as well as an 81 year-old man. at least 9 patients. most of them children were listed in critical condition today at 2 hospitals 7 others were reportedly in serious condition. >> there's $0.3, a siblings that are currently hospitalized with in children. and this is unique in truly demonstrates the devastating effects of this on our community last that greatly nightmare. >> last he really injured. last night lost during should have been a celebration. >> according to the police chief officers were not pursuing brooks when he entered the parade route. but an officer did fire a shot to try to stop him but stop shooting because of the danger presented to others. officials
