prepared for this moment when the omicron variant would reach california. the nation in state's first case detected wednesday in a fully vaccinated. san francisco resident who had recently traveled to south africa the person has mild symptoms. we are proud to be able to identify in this state because of those efforts to be well prepared. >> around covid the lessons we learned over the past 20 plus months. >> to be ready on all fronts in california. demonstrates that today the state's top health officials say they're now in the process of gathering even more information on the omicron variant and boosting covid-19 testing at airports across california toes into this period of uncertainty. it is not the time to panic with the omicron variant now in california, governor newsome said there are no plans to shut down schools and businesses. none of us want to see that happen. i certainly don't want to see that happen. and i see no indication at this moment whatsoever that that's in our immediate future. as long as we continue our nation, the efforts those

efforts, including vaccinations and booster shots at a school in a county with one of california's lowest vaccination rates. merced county. the governor and health officials wednesday urging those who need either to get it now. and the evidence that individual with omicron identified by sequencing. actually has mild symptoms is improving. think is a testimony to the importance of the vaccinations. >> we have a lot more to learn. >> although this first case was detected here in california. state officials say we should assume that this variant is present in other states at the state capitol. ashley zavala kron 4 news. >> and with that omicron variant here in san francisco. lots of people have questions, right. they want to make sure they're keeping themselves and their loved ones safe, especially with the holidays approaching a lot of people planning large gatherings and also traveling. so here are some of those answers is ucsf infectious disease specialist doctor peter chin. hong, thank you for joining us. thanks

thanks justine. so like we're kind of getting things back to normal people are getting vaccinated. kids are vaccinated. things are opening up. >> but this new variant. concerning since its has more mutations on and it could possibly be more contagious. should we be changing what we do every day going back to like washing our hands all the time. >> well, just say i think area residents are ready covid street-smart. so there's nothing new that we have to do. we just have to do this scene. things that we always have been doing. i wouldn't change anything personally and there are only 4 words that i have for the audience because get vaccinated get boosted. you know, that's the most important thing. and of course, it is a crowded indoor setting any going there a long time. wear your mask. >> are you of the opinion that being vaccinated will provide some degree of protection against omicron or or maybe a lot of protection. >> i think it's going to provide a lot of protection. look at this. a key study in some cisco, for example, you
5:33 pm
know what, has not been widely reported is that in contact tracing they looked at all the contacts of this individual and none of them were actually part president speaking, though, the fact that they're probably not as transmissible. if you're vaccinated inside africa. at the center of crime right now. none of the people got a look round by one report at least will fully they were either not vaccine, which is 65% cases, all partially vaccinated, which was a 35%. so i think with a highly vaccinated area like the bay we're probably if we're going to see anything, it will be very mild cases. so the patient in san francisco that has this new variant was vaccinated but did not have a booster shot yet. >> what does that tell us about the effectiveness of the vaccine and also does that make boosters even more important now with the booster not made a difference in protecting someone against this new variant. well, i think it's too early to tell.
5:34 pm
but i i think personally that abuse is great at not even getting infected in the first think of the virus as the enemy trying to get in your house is getting in the front gate. if you not do said, but he will never getting your house because he had t cells are going to kick it out of the house to the street. delta has been so dominant for so long. is it possible that omicron will overtake delta as the main strain of concern. >> does that even really matter. it probably doesn't matter in a vaccinated area, but it probably will be a dominant virus not the dominant virus. it's already becoming dominant inside africa. south africa was a delta country mark on. so i think if that follows that plea, but we really expect that it would do the same in other parts of the world. >> what we expect to see this variant also infecting children. >> yes, i mean, i i think you know, this road probably be an equal opportunity. very and just like delta was remember
5:35 pm
before delta, we won't see a lot of kids infected of course, only 2 to 4% of them go to the hospital. in that you're of delta and then of the omicron of this with taking down to it will be just if not more transmissible. and so that we would expect a unvaccinated kids say get infected as well. >> how well are we doing at getting that 5 to 11 year-old, you know, kids age group vaccinated and and could omicron, you know, showing up, you know, delay kind of getting back to normal kids being able to take their masks off at school and the like. >> i hope not i think making really good progress in the area in particular vaccinations of 5 to 11 so does this go above or and kanye above 40 to 50% now. so i think i'm much better even than the rest of the city in the country. i think ellie is like around the 10% little bit
5:36 pm
higher so seti good progress. i think if anybody is going to do it. the bay area's going to do it. i continue to be happy to live here during the pandemic. >> how many were very. and so we're going to see because we're going to start running letters here in the greek alphabet pretty soon. >> i ocon is not the end of the story as long as they're unvaccinated people in the in the u.s. we still have millions of unvaccinated every 2 weeks. we're getting a new variant being created. so it's just a matter of time to tweet before one of them again after omicron rises to the list of the most wanted list. but you know, we're not vaccinating the world. doctor chin-hong. and you know, the u.s. isn't even vaccinated enough. >> you're the voice of reason why do you seem so calm here. well, i come because again, you know, inside in turmoil about the global situation and lack of a vaccine equity. but
5:37 pm
i think, you know, we do have the technology available. and it's just a matter of willpower. i think thinking about vaccine. the world is a really complex this year that has to do it economics and. intellectual property and, you know, voluntary licensing. they are making headway with the pills well, the pair of air from or and pax-lovid from pfizer with. those are probably enter many parts of the world before some vaccines. well, but we're doing a crummy you know, it's that some some parts of africa won't be vaccinated until the end of 2023. well, leave it there. doctor peter chin, hong, thank you for joining us here. during kron, 4 news at 5. >> thanks so grants and just seen can't wait to hear from new year's eve. appreciate your doctor. >> still to come tonight on kron, 4 news at 5. we'll tell you why one bay area mother is being celebrated today in the festivities are just beginning. and after thousands

that ridge. i'm a big in the week in as we get toward the latter part of the weekend. a room for some nice weather again. but starting to see a change in weather pattern. then you start look at the minute in the forecast that's really going to really what's makes up for the weather here as forecast goes ahead right now, the offshore winds continuing. but as we see in the summer months. sometimes you get a heat wave come through all of a sudden you start to see a suddenly surge of fog. and guess what, we're seeing some of that fog a little for the south making its way up the coastline. i think we're going to see some of that fog form along the coast overnight tonight. it's tomorrow morning along the 7, a taylor county coast that's going help cool down the temperatures now offshore winds continuing but not as strong as last night. and you start to see the arrows here. little suddenly push begins to develop along the coastline as we head through the morning tomorrow. so, yeah, i think changes in the works. these temperatures are going to be cooling down around the bay area starting tomorrow. they're still going to be warm. but the numbers are going to come off a few degrees. high pressure still in control. all those storms continuing to move. well to the north tomorrow we've got another nice warm day. you see
