covering world. what we know about this case camilla. >> well, the first person who has been infected with omicron the omicron variant in the country is a san francisco man. now he has some mild symptoms right now and is self isolating. but take a look at your screen we're giving you a timeline of how the health department was able to determine this case. now officials say the man flew into sfo on november 22nd after a trip to south africa. 6 days later he developed covid symptoms and got tested on monday. his results came back positive. that sample was then brought to a ucsf lab for rapid sequencing and then yesterday the cdc confirmed the sample is on the kron now on the kron is a new coronavirus variant that was first detected in south africa. scientists say it is a virus that spreads quickly and the first omicron patient that san francisco man like i said, is self isolating and city officials say the man did the right thing and got tested quickly and they are confident

the city as well. position to handle covid and its variants. >> san francisco is relatively well positioned to respond to variance our vaccine may is high. more boosters are going to arms every day. 5 to 11 year-olds are getting vaccinated. the rapid uptake. our masking and vaccine requirements are among some of the most stringent in the country. >> experts say the vaccine likely saved the man from suffering a far worse illness. health officials are conducting contract tracing so far. none of the man's contacts have tested positive now san francisco's public health director doctor grant colfax says the city's vaccination rate is high. it's at 81%. and he says because of this there will be no new restrictions coming to san francisco and that message has been echoed by governor gavin newsome. darya james will hear from him in the next half hour. for now, back to you,

going to let the mask mandate to expire in january. but he's going to extend that now all the way through march 18th, meaning you have to mask up even on domestic flights. he wants to pump up the efforts to fight covid-19 and all the variants that follow with it. here's what you need to know. he promises the way it looks right now. there will be no shutdown of the economy. >> we're learning more every single day and we'll fight this variant was science and speed, not chaos and confusion. >> happen is he wants to pump up booster shots for americans. he says a 60% of americans already fully vaccinated. he wants to provide more free home testing kits. he's going to keep the schools open. obviously everything is very fluid. but the way things are. they want to give the world health organization and american

doctors. time to research this variant to see how quickly it spreads. is it easy to spread and how sick people will get. so the bottom line, james and already he's doing all of this to buy the health experts time to attack the covid variant. and again, it's all but a done deal. i know he's going to announce it a little bit later today. but it's all but a done deal. you will have to test negative one day before coming into united states, not to mention the restrictions that he's already put in place for countries like south africa. back to you. >> all right. thanks a lot. we'll well, as stephanie was also one of 4 major airports expanding testing as part of the cdc program airport spokesperson doug yakel says that voluntary testing is or was focused primarily on travelers from india because of the delta variant. but that, of course, has now changed. >> in response to the omicron variant the cdc expanded the scope of the pilot test program at sfo to now include travelers arriving from south africa, germany, france and the uk really the countries

where this omicron variant is known to be spreading. >> so the testing is voluntary. they can be done through a test at the airport or passengers can take a test kit home. says there's been no modifications made to air travel at sfo following the announcement of the new omicron variant. we'll see if that changes after the president's announcement today. meanwhile, health officials in san mateo county say that the demand for booster shots is on the rise. the demand is so high that you'll now need to make an appointment. if you want to get that shot at one of the county's vaccine clinics all walk-ups will be turned away from the senate hail event center on saratoga drive with officials saying that boosters are also available at community clinics, health care providers and pharmacies, many of which do not require an appointment. so maybe a better luck there. >> the news is in from the a's. >> i don't know if you heard our be the bear but is bad for a's fans. the teen is a step closer to leave in. according to cnbc, the a's are looking at a site to develop the

tropicana hotel as a possible location in las vegas. our new stadium, they still have to put together a plan on how they're gonna pay for it. because what i heard was the plan a look at like a billion dollars stadium so far, though, none of this is getting comments from the a's. we know that the a's owner has already made several trips to vegas. and now these reports there are at least a couple of sites, one right on the vegas strip. another was like a golf course. i think so. there's all kinds of word out there already that this is actually a reality in the works. we'll keep you posted. sorry. breaking news from overnight. major league baseball. is it a lockout now the previous agreement between the owners and players union expired overnight and they haven't reached a deal. so what this means is that team officials and players cannot communicate in any way and that includes free agent deals and trades. those are all suspended right now because there's this

american flag, there was a police procession of red and blue flashing lights kevin nishita served in uniform as an officer at the oakland housing authority. and for the police departments of hayward coma and san jose san jose led the procession to its final destination. >> sergeant to shoot but when you still with the san jose police department. we were detectives together and the gang investigation unit for 3 years. you know, we brought her brother home and that's what this was about. >> this is a man who touched so many lives. terms of the development of the latest on his killer. the oakland police department says that it would like to speak to a person who officers believe has cell phone video. of what happened.

would include cash for experienced officers and oakland residents who joined the department. >> in national news. here is the vigil that was held to remember not 3, but now 4 children who died in the shooting that happened in a michigan high school. the 4th person died yesterday from his injuries and that was a 17 year-old named justin schilling who died. we also told you about the other children who was killed 15. good backup and i can get the name of the 15 year-old was 15 year-old easton crumbly who faces the murder and terrorism charges. he's the one police topped with a gun in his hand when they arrived and more bullets so he could have killed more people. his father turns out purchase that semi automatic handgun for him. just days before the shooting and authorities are calling this school shooting a planned act. they say that crumbly

darya james, back to you. thank you. raise 5.31 and back to the top story. the new variant of covid omicron found for the first time. the nation trace to san francisco. yeah. and in this first case of the variant found in the country. a state officials now say they are preparing. >> for more cases. they know there are probably others out there. camila barco actually standing by live in the newsroom with the very latest on all of this. camilla. >> yeah. well, that's what the state health officials are emphasizing they expect more cases of the omicron variant to be detected here in the state. and as you guys said, one person here in san francisco has already been infected with the omicron variant governor gavin newsome and state health leaders say that they have been prepared for this moment. their main message to the public is not to panic. newsome says there will be no new restrictions coming to the state despite the country's first case of omicron here in the city. >> none of us want to see that happen. i certainly don't want to see that happen. and i see no indication at this moment whatsoever that that's in our

released him from custody without bail. this weekend. that move has a number of law enforcement agencies furious. mayor liccardo says that something has to be done to balance defendants rights with protecting the community. you know what we're seeing because the bell policies folks are back out there while they're still high on methamphetamine that. but let's make sure we actually have a defendant who is there in court for that preliminary examination. if you release them. >> on their own recognizance is a very high probability. they're never going to be back in that courthouse because they know if they are very good chance you're going up locked up. 4 years if not decades. >> earlier this year, the california supreme court ruled it was unconstitutional to hold suspects behind bars if they can't afford bail, judges can only order a suspect to be kept behind bars. if there was clear evidence in the case. well, you theater director and former teacher in the south bay will be spending 35 years in prison. for assault. the santa clara county sheriff's department arrested joseph, hold on september 3rd of last
