experts are predicting there will be more on the kron cases in the bay area in the coming days and weeks with several already detected in alameda county. >> just yesterday, kron four's camila barco has details on what we can now expect now that the cases are starting to rise. >> doctors and scientists are still learning how contagious the omicron variant is regardless, local health. experts say that the variant will spread. >> okay. so definitely pop up. it seems to be again, very transmissible ucsf infectious disease expert doctor peter chin. hong. >> critics, more omicron variant cases will show up in the bay area. but he says it's not going to send many people to the hospital as a variance. so far it seems to be. we're send out a potentially milder and then number 2, given the high vaccination rate in the bay area. it will keep people from going to the hospital in general on friday alameda county health officials detected 5 people. >> with omicron they had mild

symptoms. but they were all vaccinated. most have received their booster shots and no one had to go to the hospital. doctor han says we have yet to see severely ill patients with the omicron variant. so far it doesn't seem to be causing very serious disease, at least in the united states with the cases we have here and around the world. it's unclear how effective the covid vaccines. >> our with the new variant. but doctor chang hong believes it could be a protective layer. whether or not i might get a mild this emerges in the u.s. remains to be a but a recently being boosted at me, even escape that has more on the crop variant cases are detected state leaders and health experts are asking people not to panic but remain vigilant. doctor chin-hong says we don't have to do anything different. but he continues to encourage people to get vaccinated and get their booster shot. san francisco city leaders say that at this time there is no need for more covid

restrictions. >> in san francisco. camila barco kron 4 news in the north bay parents allegedly sent >> covid positive child to school. now it's student said neil cummins elementary school in corte madera have now tested positive for covid-19 school district officials say they suspect 3 students were infected on campus because child attended class after testing positive. in a statement, the district superintendent says that the index cases were from one family with a student tested positive and their parents knowingly symptom and their sibling to school for 7 days, county public health has been given the details regarding this case and the district will be taking corrective action about 75 students were exposed to the virus and had to be quarantined over thanksgiving break. covid-19 coverage continues right now at kron 4 dot com just scan the qr code on your screen while you're there, you can find latest information on the omicron variant to where it's been detected in the country. the latest travel restrictions vaccine availability and more.

journalists was attacked while on assignment oakland. police are trying to find the people they say robbed a san francisco chronicle hog rougher of their camera at gunpoint. this happened yesterday afternoon around 3.30, near the west oakland bart station on 5th street. the photographer was on assignment when this happened and was not injured. the suspected robbers did get away in a car. but oakland police have not revealed any details on. what type of car it was and now it has been exactly one week since kron 4 security guard kevin ishida passed away after being shot while on assignment with one of our reporters tonight we're hearing from the machine to family. they spoke with kron four's pam moore and they're begging anyone who has any information in connection to his murder to come forward. i kindly. please ask if anybody was in the area in the oakland community. in the area at the time that this incident happened that. >> they cell phone footage,

but they please. we get to the oakland police department are seeking to find. the reasoning behind all of this. >> the family's plea for someone to come forward comes after the oakland police department made a similar request revealing they believe someone has cell phone video of the shooting. here's a map of where the shooting took place on november 24th. it was right near the 4th and harrison intersections in downtown oakland just a few blocks away from the 12th street bart station. and this is a photo of the car police say was involved at a white 2004 to 2008 acura tl with a sunroof. and at the time of the shooting and had no front license plate. authorities are asking anyone with video linked to this investigation to contact oakland. police is homicide division immediately. there is a reward of $32,500 being offered for any information that leads to an

arrest. meanwhile, 5 people have been arrested in connection to a massive retail theft ring. >> that targetedsstores all across the bay area. california attorney general rob bonta announced those arrest on friday. officials say that ring stole more than 8 million dollars in items in just the past few months. the san mateo county sheriff's office says the ring consist of criminals buying and distributing stolen retail merchandise and electronics. details on which of those recent high-profile robberies. the group could be connected to. it's still unknown tonight. a man wanted for a smash-and-grab at a san bruno target store last month has been arrested. police say that man stole more than a 1000 bucks in items from the location at the shop. so the 10 a friend shopping center. police have not released his name, but say that he is a 43 year-old man from oakland police say they were able to track him down at the san bruno bart station when they tried to arrest him, he tried jumping in front of an oncoming bart train that man

heightened security at stores in downtown walnut creek will now be the new norm during this holiday shopping season. this after the city council voted to create a downtown. >> police patrol be that happened earlier this week. the move comes in response to a growing number of massive retail thefts. >> kron four's phillipe djegal talked with families shopping out today at broadway plaza. >> private security guards more so than uniformed police officers visibly president monitoring broadway plaza in downtown walnut creek. the resulting reaching a tipping 0, 2 weeks ago at the outdoor mall. >> when 19 people looted the nordstrom store stealing $125,000 worth of stuff. i was nervous. i think after seeing what happened. but coming here. we felt pretty safe and feels like it never happened. this family opted for in-person shopping rather than making their purchases online was nice. having that middle street blocked off the main road closed to traffic to

>> welcome back, everyone. san mateo county taking a new approach when it comes to responding to mental health crisis calls starting monday. the county is set to launch a pilot program that will look to de escalate 911, calls for scale. longest joining us now live from the newsroom with details on this. good evening, gayle. what's up? >> good evening. i'm justine and jonathan mental health clinicians will partner with law enforcement in this pilot

program and former san mateo county's largest cities will be taking part. >> daly city, san mateo redwood city and south san francisco will be participating in what's called the community wellness and crisis response pilot project aimed to help bring additional mental health resources to law enforcement. >> since the onset of the covid-19 pandemic. we've seen a dramatic rise in the number of 911. calls related to mental health and people in mental crisis here talk things we >> as residents were interested in making sure that we did. and that strong we supporting mental health crisis really trying to figure out is how we can connect you. with a mental health clinician. at the same time seeing what services you need. >> in the long mateo county's behavioral health and recovery services is working with local nonprofits star vista to train and supervise clinicians who

will be stationed with each city's police department. there may be a person. >> that officers have dealt with multiple times that are, you know, experiencing a mental health issues. now, what's happening is now we have a clinician that could actually work with them and then go on if there are additional calls, the 4 participating cities and the county will contribute approximately 1.5 million dollars for this initiative. >> by ending a qualified mental health professional. however, we believe we can provide. >> better service for our residents as well as potentially de-escalate any conflict which may arise by having a uniformed police officer responding. >> this approach will help us make sure that we can try to have for the people who are involved in the call and also trying get people into assistance help address the underlying issues.

>> this will be a 2 year pilot program and all the data will be independently evaluated at stanford university and from their county leaders will assess if this program will be continued and expanded in the newsroom. gayle ong kron 4 news, thank you. >> tonight, san jose. police say they're now investigating the death of a man found in the house last week as a homicide officers found that man's body inside of a home on element. and then expressway back on november 27th the salmon send santa clara county coroner's office ruled the death a homicide. the cause of death is still pending. police say right now they have no suspects in the case and are still trying to figure out a motive. the death is now san jose's 31st, homicide of 2021. in the north bay santa rosa, police arrested an 18 year-old high school student after they say he brought a gun onto campus on friday. it happened at montgomery high school officers responded to rumors that a student had brought a gun to campus when officers

got to the scene, they searched the student's backpack and found the gun in sight. there's no word on if the gun was loaded or not. investigators say that after talking with other students, they don't believe the student was planning on using the gun. that student, though, was arrested on charges of having a concealed weapon and bringing a weapon onto school grounds. in an unrelated incident. a 14 year-old student was arrested at a private north valley school after police say he made threats about bombing. it. investigators say that student had made threats to other students about mailing bombs to the school. the skaters arrested that student for charges of criminal threats. >> bond is now set at $500,000 each for james and jennifer crumbley, the parents of the teen school shooting suspect in michigan. they made a video court appearance earlier today. both pleaded not guilty. 2 charges of involuntary manslaughter. they were arrested overnight in detroit. hours after the fbi and u.s. marshals declared them as fugitives. they were

arrive until next week. doesn't really going to notice that active weather with that storm door reopening in the bay area. >> but from now until then, we do have to watch out for some dangerous king tide starting out around sunday morning shortly before 9 o'clock could see the highest high tides as high as about nearly 8. be there. so we are going to see low tides by sunday at around 4.15, in the afternoon and that could bring us some minor coastal flooding right around the bay area shoreline. but king tides, though, will continue from now through 11 o'clock for your sunday afternoon. but taking a live look outside. we're noticing an increase in that high cloud cover and also dense low clouds and fog during the overnight hours impacting your sunday morning commute. so just a heads up there for all you driver sunday morning temperatures right now though, widespread low to mid 50's. one outlier though nevado 48 degrees. so starting to cool down their radar for tracking very dry conditions. but all

that is going to change monday into tuesday. could see some light scattered showers really bringing us just drizzle about a 10th of an inch of rain or less with measurable rain arriving by thursday morning through thursday afternoon could see about a quarter of an inch of rain or less in about half an inch of rain and snow showers for those of you in this year. up. so first significant storm will be seen in quite a while. returning to the bay area by later this upcoming week overnight lows tonight mid to upper 40's santa rosa 38 degrees in daytime highs, about 5 to 10 degrees above average away from the immediate coastline. santa rosa and avato. you can even more into the low 70's. but look at what this storm on thursday does to our daytime highs and overnight lows friday into saturday could see frost form and temperatures about 5 degrees below average. so it's nice that the weather is going to match the calendar because winter just about 15 days away. jonathan, you like
