>> when fun time from the bay area's local news station. you're watching kron. 4 trust in other ways like tite open community. i think we have value to each other. >> tonight, a marine county school dealing with a covid outbreak after it says a family knowingly send a covid positive student to school for a week. that is where we start this saturday night here on kron. 4 news at 10 o'clock welcome and i'm jonathan mccall and i'm justine waltman. neil cummins elementary school had 8 cases, 3 suspected school based
transmissions. >> and about 75 students had to quarantine kron four's amanda hari spoke with the board of trustees, president about the situation. also how they're handling it and also what the parents who did this, what the board is saying they're going to be doing towards them. amanda. >> the president of the board of trustees tells me she feels good about how they handled this situation. she says they were caught off guard by some of the circumstances. they tell us the family knew their child was positive when they sent them school, but they were prepared for potential exposure and how to respond to it. >> it's a pretty break protocol. neil cummins elementary school in corte madera is dealing with a covid outbreak. the superintendent sent out an update saying just before the thanksgiving holiday. >> there were 8 cases and 3 suspected school based transmissions. he says it started with one family that knowingly sent a student tested positive to school and
their sibling for 7 days. thought perhaps this could be a family where there were language barriers are cultural barriers and they may not understood. >> our communication. >> and that was not in fact, the case. so it was just an integration egregious and blatant disregard for other people. president of larkspur corte madera school district board of trustees. jill sellers says 75 other students had to quarantine because of close contact with thanksgiving break was >> could have been times better. she says no additional cases have been reported since the quarantine. she says as a public school district, there's no way to punish the parents for their decision and they will not suspend the students. we do not believe in keeping them out of the classroom away from from because their parents did something wrong. but sellers says the county could take action it is my understanding that there are other entities within the county that may be taking corrective action against this family. the parents could face misdemeanor charges for violating rain county's health order. it
requires people who test positive to isolate for at least 10 days. the student did test positive at a medical facility. it was reported to the county and it got back to the school. people who know what this family is has made their despite very clear sellers hopes other families will learn from this situation. she's also grateful there wasn't greater spread. she says the schools are following all moraine county public health requirements just shows that are in school. protocols around masking and hand washing and and etcetera are really kind of paying >> the district is asking parents to keep their kids home if they're sick, sellers tells me they do have a slightly higher absence rate than previous years, but they would rather play it safe. live in the newsroom. amanda hari kron 4 news. thank you. now to the east bay where alameda county has confirmed that 5 people have contracted the coronavirus. >> omicron variant. in a statement released yesterday
it says these cases are among 12 covid think teen cases in the county and the patients went to a wedding in wisconsin last weekend. one of them traveled internationally before attending that wedding. the individuals all have mild symptoms and are fully vaccinated. most of them already got a booster shot as well. no one has been hospitalized, but health experts are predicting there will be more omicron variant in the bay area in the coming days and weeks. but the virus seems like it's not as strong as the delta variant. >> as a variance. so far it seems to be. >> we're send out a potentially milder and then number 2, given the high vaccination rate in the bay area. it will keep people from going to the hospital in general. >> it's unclear how effective the covid vaccines are. but doctor peter chin-hong believes it is a protective layer to this new variant as more omicron variant cases continue to rise, state leaders and health experts are asking people not to panic and get the covid vaccine and a

well. but we are going to notice better lifting and clearing by around mid morning for your sunday. so strongly before your new lunchtime hour. that's when going to notice clear skies and also in improvement in visibility for those of you heading out for the 2nd half of your weekend. but temperatures out there right now already cooling down into the upper 40's for those of you at timber on low 50's along the san francisco peninsula coastline from downtown san francisco in half moon bay still a little bit mild as you make your way inland. the san jose and hayward even alameda currently at 54 degrees and low 50's for most of the north bay with valais and petaluma currently at 50 degrees. but we are tracking drizzle chances for your monday night into tuesday of this upcoming week cooler drier air mass after that. but then thursday, a weak storm is going to make its way into the bay area. very fast-moving bring us about a quarter of an inch of rain or less and even some light snow showers to
this year. and as i fast forward 10 days from now. we're going to see some light to moderate and even heavy downpours for about 10 days monday into your tuesday as well. certainly going to keep an eye on that because tracking very active weather. but from now until then, warming up for the 2nd half of your weekend. more. my full forecast in just a few minutes. back to you. jonathan justine risa. thank you. now to an update to a story that we first told you about tonight here on kron. 4 news at 8. >> sfpd is responding after 2 officers were denied service at a san francisco restaurant. >> the scene unfolded at hilda and just see on union street yesterday in a statement posted on instagram restaurant management said the officers were armed and in uniform when they were seated. some of the restaurant staff say they felt uncomfortable with having the officers inside the restaurant with multiple weapons on them. that's when the restaurant went on to say the then asked the officers to leave in its statement. the restaurant went on to say that quote, we
respect the san francisco police department and are grateful for the work they do. we welcome them into the restaurant when they are off duty out of uniform and without their weapons tonight, san francisco police chief bill scott responding to the situation on twitter saying in part, quote, the san francisco police department stands for safety with respect even when it means respecting wishes that our officers and i find discouraging and personally disappointing chief scott went on to say that quote, i believe the vast majority of san franciscans. welcome their police officers who deserve to know that they are appreciated for the difficult job. we ask them to do in their uniforms to keep our neighborhoods and businesses safe. >> in santa rosa 2 people were arrested and 10 cars towed after a series of sideshows from last weekend. police are now saying people from across the bay area and the sacramento region came into the city to participate officers responded to reports of reckless driving fights and
shootings. there are no reports of any injuries, but law enforcement and people in the area are saying they're concerned. but the ongoing issue of sideshows. and in sacramento, police there trying to crack down inside shows as well. police broke up a massive sideshow in the capital. this was last night. one event organizer was arrested. police say there were active warrants out there for the organizer related to previous sideshows in total 14 cars were towed 20 misdemeanor citations were issued along with 15 infractions. >> tonight, oakland police are trying to fund the folks who they say robbed yet another bay area journalist while on assignment. this time it happened with the san francisco chronicle photographer their photographer taken. heather camera taken at gunpoint. this happened yesterday afternoon around 3.30, at the west oakland bart station on 5th street. the photographer was on assignment when that armed robbery happened and we are told the photographer was not hurt. the robbers then fled
the car fled the area in a car, but police have not revealed revealed any details on what kind of car it was. meanwhile, heightened security at stores in downtown walnut creek will now be the new norm during the holiday shopping season. it comes after the walnut creek city council this week voted create a downtown police patrol beat in their area. the move comes after a response to the growing number of mass retail thefts, kron forcefully de gaulle spent the day at broadway plaza. >> private security guards more so than uniformed police officers visibly president monitoring broadway plaza in downtown walnut creek. the result of rapid reaching a tipping 0, 2 weeks ago at the outdoor mall. >> when 19 people looted the nordstrom store stealing $125,000 worth of stuff. i was nervous. i think after seeing what happened. but coming here. we felt pretty safe and feels like it never happened. this family opted for in-person shopping rather than making their purchases online

>> as the family of kevin nishita continues reaching out to the community for help with the investigation into his death. they are also showing remarkable strength in the face of this personal sorrow. kevin was shot and killed one week ago today while protecting a kron 4 reporter in oakland. the family says they're trying to focus on the good times and memories
instead of their pain. >> they talked one-on-one with kron 4 anchor pam moore. miss him. much. miss him. he was a big part of this family. those are king. i protector for free fun. all right. by sir. other than just a grandpa and father and a husband. >> he was our everything. >> a family grieving the death of loved one. kevin nishita and determined to get answers wife, virginia son enrique and daughter more rain. all say he spent his life protecting his family and his career protecting the community losing his life in the process. now they are trying to understand why we just need the closure. we don't like this open ended. >> not knowing how some of that love pass to we just need to know and have peace. they remember the husband and father with the big personality loving and fun.
>> really a fun couple. he was my everything they would tv series and then after a while, we became the characters. he would call me and he would. call me the name of whatever series we're watching just to make it fun and release had date night once a week. i'm going missus us. >> he was big on being a grandfather and he loved his dog cali. dog misses a very much. >> so. really hard see the very sad as well. >> over the years as a police officer in coma haywood and san jose. and later, a security guard. kevin, the sheet about much more to the job of law enforcement. he was someone who genuinely cared about others volunteering at
police events going the extra mile with people he encountered in the field for the community. being a police officer. he definitely protected people. >> but ask them on certain cases. look how can i help you? he has a kind heart like that. he wanted to. in the committee and that's why he. but when the police force, one of the most adamant things about him. is he just you never asked for anything in return. you know, he was always asking why he did what we needed. even at. you know, how it rolls we are now. you know, you just never just asked us to, you know, be happy work hard in life. >> so now they reflect and wait for answers in the backyard where they shared so much time together. so it's a word it's in japanese and it's. got on and that means that to fist. perseverance in a difficult time. kevin, but

didn't feel like it. and even for those of you outside right now we're noticing increasing high and low cloud cover. that's cooling us down from coast to inland valleys right now. and out in the upper 40's as a san carlos paulo alto even cooler than that at 46 degrees with widespread low to mid 50's around the bay area shoreline. but radar for going to track some changes in the extended forecast. we had a great start for our wet season. thanks to those 2 atmospheric rivers a little bit lackluster from now until then. but it looks like our storm door going to open once again next weekend, even 10 days from now. so let's try google futurecast for going to see a storm monday night through tuesday morning trying to make its way into the bay area. really just bring us some traces amount of drizzle at best. but it's thursday storm that's finally going to bring us some measurable rain could see about a quarter of an inch of rain or less with this fast moving storm. even bringing some much needed much welcome snow showers to this year. about half an inch less or there. and we are tracking,
though, by tonight we're going to cool down into the mid to upper 40's upper 30's for those of you in santa rosa. so pretty chilly temperatures there, make sure to bundle up this evening. high temperatures tomorrow warming up significantly away from the san francisco peninsula coastline. 5 to 10 degrees above average widespread mid 60's. as you make your way into the east. bay upper 60's for those of you in san jose and redwood city at 68 degrees but low 70's for santa rosa and avato seasonal temperatures, though, for half moon, bay and downtown san francisco because of that fog bank 61 degrees for downtown san francisco in 59 degrees for those of you at half moon bay. but then take a look at temperature trend. we're going to cool down and even see some low 50's by later this upcoming week as that storm passes a bay area with overnight lows in the 30's to 40's. so patchy frost going to be an issue. but then 10 days from now, more shower

>> san mateo county is taking a new approach to responding to mental health crisis calls starting on monday. a pilot program is going to launch aimed at de escalating 911. calls kron four's. gayle ong has the details. >> mental health clinicians will partner with law enforcement in this pilot program and for of san mateo county's largest cities will be taking part. >> daly city, san mateo redwood city and south san francisco will be participating in what's called the community wellness and crisis response pilot project aimed to help bring additional mental health resources to law enforcement. >> since the onset of the covid-19 pandemic. we've seen a dramatic rise in the number of 911. calls related to mental health and people in mental crisis here talk things we >> as residents were
interested in making sure that we did. and that's probably could supporting mental health crisis for really trying to figure out is how we can connect you. with a mental health clinician. at the same time seeing what services you need in the long run. >> san mateo county's behavioral health and recovery services is working with local nonprofits star vista to train and supervise clinicians who will be stationed with each city's police department. there may be a person. >> that officers have dealt with multiple times that are, you know, experiencing a mental health issues. now, what's happening is now we have a clinician that could actually work with them. then go on. if there are additional calls, the 4 participating cities and the county will contribute approximately 1.5 million dollars for this initiative. >> by ending a qualified mental health professional.
however, we believe we can provide. >> better service for our residents as well as potentially de-escalate any conflict which may arise by having a uniformed police officer responding. >> this approach will help us make sure that we can try to have for the people who are involved in the call and also trying get people into assistance help address the underlying issues. >> this will be a 2 year pilot program and all the data will be independently evaluated at stanford university and from their county leaders will assess if this program will be continued. an expanded in the newsroom. gayle ong kron 4 news. >> in the north bay tonight, santa rosa police have arrested an 18 year-old high school student after they say he brought a gun onto campus. that arrest happened yesterday at montgomery high school officers responded to rumors swirling that a student had brought a gun to campus when they got there. they searched the student's backpack and
found that gun right now there's no word on exactly if the gun was loaded. investigators say after talking with other students, they don't believe that he was planning on using it. that student, though, was still arrested on charges of having a concealed weapon and bringing a weapon on school grounds. >> we have new developments tonight in this national story that we're following, the parents of the suspected school shooter and oxford, michigan are behind bars after an hour's long manhunt a judge set their bond at a half a million dollars each. that's for both jennifer and james crumbley. police considering them fugitives after they failed to show up for court friday after they were charged with involuntary manslaughter. they are charged in connection to the shooting that killed 4 students and injured 7 others. >> allegedly at the hands of their 15 year-old son judy brings as much more from today's arraignment. >> involuntary manslaughter, which is punishable by up to 15 years in prison. and $207,500 fine and mandatory
dna. >> i understand first, jennifer crumbley then james crumbley. how do you think need to count one, not guilty, not guilty to all charges. 4 counts of involuntary manslaughter saturday's court appearance came just hours after police found the crumbleys in a detroit warehouse after they didn't show up for their arraignment they certainly appear to be >> as you can imagine. as indicated, you know, they were in a commercial building in room. we were able to take him into custody without incident and but they were very distressing walking out in an extraordinary rare move prosecutors are attempting to hold the couple accountable for the actions of their 15 year-old son. >> ethan crumbley is accused of killing 4 classmates and wounding 7 others at oxford high school in north suburban detroit tuesday when filing charges against his parents. prosecutors revealed james crumbley had purchased the gun used days earlier, jennifer
crumbley posted on social media. the weapon was even as christmas present on the day of the shooting. prosecutors say the couple refused to take their son out of school during a meeting with the counselor after 2 teachers have expressed concerns about the team's behavior. your honor. this is a very serious horrible. >> terrible. >> murder. >> and shooting. it has affected the entire community. >> and these 2 individuals. could have stopped it arguing for a lower bond defense attorneys told the judge their clients left town due to safety concerns. >> and had fully intended to turn themselves in the court is only aware of the facts. the prosecution has presented, but that gun was actually locked. >> so when the prosecution is stating that this child had free access to a gun that is just absolutely not true. the crumbleys are back in court on the 14th judy. >> we'll keep you updated
there. not a hawaii where is being hit with a rare blizzard warning where they're expecting at least a foot of snow this weekend on the big island. the national weather service anticipates harsh conditions on the big island mountain summits. they're also bracing for 100 mile per hour winds as well as heavy rain and flooding across the state. it's known as part of a kona storm, a seasonal cyclone that sometimes forms during the winter months. this is the first blizzard warning in hawaii in 3 years. we could use some of that snow in the sierra but say they're getting snow right now we're seeing warmth. >> a little global warming and flawed. but. >> we're not alone, though. we're going to join them very soon with some rain and cold conditions on the wave recent. yeah, because we're certainly going to feel a cold snap in the coming days. but from now until then, we're tracking warmer temperatures for the 2nd half of the weekend seeing, though, cooler temperatures as you head out the door for your saturday night.
>> we are going to notice an increase in low and high cloud cover. but then a lot of sunshine better lifting and clearing by mid morning on sunday and thanks to the warmer temperatures and extra sunshine. northwesterly winds going to help push all that cloud cover away from the bay area because we're going to see gusts in the 20 to 25 miles per hour range. so it is going to be noticeably breezier tomorrow. temperatures. not much of a change for downtown san francisco. pretty seasonal in the low 60's there with the mission district. also in the upper 50's and we're tracking widespread upper 50's to low 60's for most of our bay area beaches. that's where it's going to be pretty average for this time of year with daly city 61 degrees, half moon bay 59 degrees for your sunday afternoon highs. but as you make your way away from the san francisco peninsula coastline. temperatures 5 to 10 degrees above average millbrae and burlingame 68 degrees with what widespread mid 60's from brisbane top all
the way into san bruno and even low 70's for those of you in san mateo, upper for san carlos. and we're tracking 60's and 70's for those of you in the innermost valleys of the south bay, specifically santa clara and campbell in the low 70's with san jose and milpitas in the upper 60's milpitas 69 degrees for your set sunday afternoon highs in livermore in the mid 60's. so about 5 degrees above average. there. remember, we should be in the low 60's as we inch closer towards that winter solstice on december 21st but braga and san ramon warming up into the low 70's. so enjoy that it's going to be the last of the 70's. we're going to see for at least the next 10 days napa 66 degrees with santa rosa out of the mid 50's like you were today and warming up nearly 20 degrees. warmer 70 degrees for your afternoon. highs in the average for this time of year should be 59 degrees. but take a look at all the 50's. we're going to see as the storms
