well. >> our top story today, top health officials say the omicron variant of covid-19 is increasing rapidly around the world. it's expected to become the dominant strain in the united states as it has in other countries over the coming weeks. now, though, we haven't seen quite the surge in places like london and new york that they're seeing. we do know the omicron variant is already here in the bay area. kron fours, camila barco joining us live in the newsroom with more details coming >> well, no. well, the omicron variant has now been detected in 6 of the 9 bay area counties and the fears of a winter covid search grow larger by the day as more and more cases are detected. the chair of the ucsf department m medicine doctor bob wachter calls the omicron variant, another curve ball. he suspects covid cases are going to climb soon. and fast. this comes as health officials in napa, sonoma and marin

counties have all confirmed their first case of the omicron variant officials say the patients in sonoma and marin counties recently traveled out of the state. napa county officials did not share any details about their positive case. and at this time no cases have been detected in contra. costa san mateo and solano counties. but there's one local health officer that says we should assume on the kron is everywhere. >> they really do assume that the virus is here and is with us is on confirmation of that in our wastewater sampling. so we do so which them playing. we've also seen evidence of omicron earlier in the week in several of our our sampling error is across the county. >> like health officers representing each barry bay area county put out a joint statement that they are urging everyone eligible to get vaccinated and if enough time has passed to get a booster shot as well. now the cdc is recommending people get pfizer's or moderna's vaccine over the johnson and johnson

vaccine and that recommendation comes after new data shows that the vaccine is linked to complications like rare blood cop, block blood clots. however, health experts say that that one-dose vaccine. it's still better than nothing at all. noel, back to you. all right. coming line. we'll check in with you again. >> in the next hour. thank you for that live report. doctor wachter does say all signs point to most omicron cases being mild. he also says he would travel for christmas here domestically. but the risk of traveling to europe over the holiday is too high in his opinion trying to return to the state to be catch covid would be a bit of a nightmare. >> in the east bay, a major vaccine clinic in oakland has reopened after it was forced to close earlier this month city officials saying the closure was due to a lack of vaccine and staff. the clinic offers all 3 of the vaccines and covid testing. but as camila was just saying, officials are really urging more moderna or pfizer vaccines. the downtown site will be open monday through

friday from 9 to 5. the fruitvale clinic is going to be open saturday. so today through wednesday also from 9 to 5. there are some limited hours on christmas and new year's day as well. we do have all the details for you at kron 4 dot com. meanwhile, the city of oakland could soon require certain businesses to mandate the covid vaccine city council member dan kalb. introducing an emergency ordinance to require proof of vaccination of places like bars restaurants, gyms, theaters, concert, venues and even dental offices. >> get more people vaccinated reduce the spread. that's why we're doing this proof of vaccination ordinance for oakland. we be able to say look at city mandated requirement and honestly, you know, if you're dining out, you should be vaccinated. you have to take off the mask. you're around other people. >> the oakland city council is expected to vote on that issue next tuesday. if it does pass, it wouldn't take effect until the middle of january. and

national news today, a federal appeals court panel ruled president joe biden's vaccine mandate for large private employers can resume the decision reverses an earlier ruling from a federal judge which caused the nationwide mandate. the court ruled the mandate is necessary to limit transmission of the virus. the mandate requires companies with 100 or more employees to require workers to be vaccinated or to submit to weekly testing an initially the mandate should have taken effect on january 4th. for the first time this season, the nfl is postponing 3 games. >> because of covid-19 outbreaks. one of them is the las vegas raiders game against the cleveland browns. the game originally was set for today. it's now going to be played on monday in cleveland sunday's game between the seattle seahawks and the la rams as well as the one between that washington. >> as well as one between washington and philadelphia have both been rescheduled for

>> welcome back. 7.10, on this saturday morning. and tiktok is working to remove calls for violence from its platform. this comes after videos on the social media app have been encouraging students to commit acts of violence at their schools nationwide. the videos put school officicls on high alert. this is the scene at amador valley high school in pleasanton just yesterday morning, police officers checking inside the school buildings as students took their final exams before heading into winter break. gilroy high school canceled all classes friday because of a threat that originated in

>> welcome back. it is just about to be 7.15 here on this saturday morning. definitely foggy out there as we take a live look at the golden gate bridge. not a lot of people on the road at this hour. hopefully you're inside watching us this morning. we do want to get a check of the forecast because it is very cold, cold cold out there this morning. hey, day. >> yeah, i know. well, good morning. good morning, everybody. and it will be even will turn the cold in the chilly for this afternoon. even with all this and that we see that's going to be almost an optical illusion. half moon bay the site that you can see there and it will be quite chilly into the afternoon hours only plus is what i can see much that we have winds to work with that. so clear skies basically once we mix of some of the fog and some pockets out golden gate bridge tends to hover around a little bit, but here are the numbers to start off. we have lower 30's even up to the north bay. no statements, by the way, with this for the bay area. at least though 33 for napa, 39

the bottle 42 san francisco getting a little bit of help near the water like half moon bay. look at this. they have the warmest number on our board here. 44 again, climate control right there from the ocean. meanwhile, inland, they drop off a little bit. somewhat typical again in the valleys. the cold air drainage effect. we see that santa rosa also livermore, 40 for concord. 39 going on for antioch. so going ahead for today. some scattered clouds just a little bit into the afternoon. doesn't start to get a little more interesting to we get to tomorrow, couple little spotty showers. i want to make a note of that are possible tomorrow that will be basically moran up to sonoma and perhaps along the peninsula or the coastal areas there. but most of the base public to be treated this. as you can see, the east and the south bay still fairly clear all the way through monday as you'll notice that's when things start to turn a little bit. take a look at those winds. now we're all the way out of sunday morning because today they're not going to be playing around at all. we'll be a little bit of an uptick on the winds by the late afternoon hours. as you can

see. and then as we go into tomorrow night into monday, a little bit of a southerly flow as it prepares for our next system. that's right. looks like next week. it will be quite unsettled just like last week was so for today it's cool and sunny lower to middle 50's. it work for sunday got a few scattered clouds spotty showers north bay. you know, basically it's more in coastal areas, particularly that's all we're looking at next week. monday scattered clouds might see some rain try to work in here. but then for the rest of the week. rain returns. it will be involved just about each day as we take a look at our 7 day forecast 52 san francisco cool and sunny opened at 5454. also. meanwhile for san jose across the broader bay there. look at that. we even have some upper 40's on the board. yes, and mid 50's covers at the coast in a bit. we'll check into that 4 zone forecast. noel, thanks, dave. >> a family is mourning the loss of the tesla employee who was shot and killed while at work on monday, 42 year-old lee razors. co worker is being

charged with his murder. we spoke to his brother, kron four's. gayle ong has the story. >> the family says he was working at tesla for 3 weeks as a temp employee and that he was trying to turn his life around before it was cut short. he was a caring person. >> you know, it was a hard worker. was great brother. he was a great friend to everybody. the brother of 42 year-old to leave. raise your heart broken and mourning the death of his brother. >> who was shot and killed just outside his workplace at the tesla factory in fremont. it's just sad the way that this happened. he didn't. he did not deserve to die. fremont. police say brazier had just finished his shift monday afternoon at the tesla factory on fremont boulevard before he was shot in the parking lot as he left several hours later detectives tracked down his co-worker 29 year-old anthony solima in milpitas. police arrested and charged lima with murder lying in wait and possession of this assault

rifle believed to be used in the crime. according to detectives, the victim and selena have been arguing earlier in the day before selena walked off the job. the raise your family relieved silly is behind bars for one of the luckier families. i got closure that the fremont pd captured this person. >> i have nothing but respect for the police the did this, but the family still reeling from the loss. his sister-in-law, elizabeth fraser says. >> we was a devoted father. he leaves behind a 7 year-old daughter. it would bring the power of that is the u.s. every weekend. >> and. >> it's just sad because you know. he's not going to be here this weekend. he's just going to be the huge hole in everybody's hearts were just all so devastated. that's such a senseless tragedy have to occur over some. you know, disagreement at work. >> the defendant is currently held at santa rita county jail and a plan without bail in the newsroom. gayle ong kron 4 news. a tragic discovery in

the east bay. authorities say a family of 5 was exposed to carbon monoxide. >> inside their pittsburgh home when officers arrived on scene, they found a man and 3 children inside alive. but a woman was pronounced dead at the scene crowd. forcefully chagall has the details. >> a concerned family member who reached out to the pittsburgh police department requesting a welfare check at a home on vincent street thursday night appears to have saved 4 lives pg and e responded to the house as well. and police say the utility company measured very high levels of carbon monoxide, a disoriented man and 3 children were hospitalized. but all are expected to survive. a woman, however, was pronounced dead. the police department says it appears the 5 people we're exposed to the odorless gas caused by a running heater. unfortunately, it's one of those seasonal risks that >> during the holiday season

throughout the winter months. the contra costa county fire protection district had crews respond to the scene as well. and spokesperson, steve hill reminds the public of the importance of having properly running carbon monoxide detectors installed required by law for all single-family home sale to be tested every month simply by pushing that test, but makes making sure. >> yeah, your unit react properly. the centers for disease control and prevention says at least 430 people in the u.s. die from accidental exposure to carbon monoxide every year. >> it's unclear if working detectors were inside the pittsburgh home. in a statement a pg and e spokesperson says, quote, our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by this tragic incident phillipe djegal all kron 4 news. >> a federal civil rights lawsuit was filed against the 3 alameda police officers involved in the death of mario gonzalez. it was filed on behalf of gonzales is 5

year-old son. it alleges the officers violated his constitutional rights when they held gonzalez faced down until he was unresponsive during an arrest last april attorneys representing mario junior called the death a necessary and tragic saying, quote, it's important to hold police accountable when they keep violating really clear training that results in death alameda county district attorney nancy o'malley and her staff are still investigating whether to file charges against the officers. still ahead here on the kron 4 morning news mayor london breed rolling out her plan to tackle issues. >> in the tenderloin. we're going to tell you what it all entails and the concerns from homeless advocates.

>> welcome back. a major population decline registered in the bay area during the pandemic. that's according to a new report, the state department of finance looking at data from july 2020 to july 2021 and it found all 9 bay area counties lost about 64,000 people combined los angeles county also lost just over 67,000 people. it's the first time in history. both regions have seen a population decline in the same year. the report did not detail reasons for that decline. breakthrough

covid cases could provide, quote super immunity against the disease. that's according to researchers at the oregon health and science university. they say being fully vaccinated against covid and having a breakthrough case actually forces the body to create more antibodies in the vaccine alone. the researchers are calling it good news saying people who do experience breakthrough cases can better fight off. new variants as they emerge. meanwhile, pfizer has announced plans to expand clinical trials of its covid vaccine to include a 3rd dose for kids as young as 6 months old. a spokesperson for the company says the first 2 doses did not create a robust immune response in kids 2 to 4 years old and now with pfizer testing its 3rd dose on young people federal approval for that age group could get postponed until the middle of next year. so far the fda has only authorized the pfizer vaccine for emergency use in kids, 5 and older. and

scientists are taking the first steps in developing what they hope will be artificial vision for people who are blind researchers at the illinois institute of technology have developed a device that bypasses the optic nerves people without site will wear special glasses that will deliver signals directly into the brain via a small implant. the hope is the brain. will that interpret those signals into images. scientists say at first the images will be crude someday. they could be a whole lot better, though. or this can go. >> we wanted to be more than the e on the eye chart. we eventually wanted to be seen. a loved one's face and this project is to explore the very beginnings of that to see how we might do something that would improve the quality of life. >> the first human clinical trial of the device is set to begin in early 2022.

valley 34 for livermore. even fremont. a 3339 hayward also for antioch. so plenty chilly across the region. the breakdown for you today we get into the mid 40's as we approach around the noon hour by the afternoon. plenty of 50's, though, is, well, we'll explore some of that in your 4 zone forecast coming up in just a bit. well. >> i am with our various leaders in san francisco to officially declare a state of emergency in the tenderloin community. >> earlier this week, san francisco mayor london breed announcing aggressive new action to try and tackle some of the biggest issues facing san francisco's and to miss tenderloin district breed said yesterday the declaration will make it easier to set up a service center for those suffering from substance abuse city leaders say people found breaking the law in the district will in some cases be given the option of a service center or jail with an average of 2 people dying each day due to an overdose city leaders

say now is the time to take this more forceful approach. one of the organizations behind this push to clean up. the tenderloin was the tender one community benefits district. they say the open air drug markets have families worried about their safety. so enforcement is needed while the coalition on homelessness is calling for alternative solutions to the problem. kron four's. dan thorn has more. >> an emergency response is coming to san francisco's most troubled neighborhood. the tenderloin district has been in the grips of a drug crisis and action is now being taken to clean up the streets. the residents have been asking for some real action for a long time. and so. >> my understanding is most residents are really excited too. >> serious. ponce christie. sure. rilla is the director of community organizing and resident voice with the tenderloin community benefit district. the group urged the mayor to help clear out and restore the neighborhood. she really believes tackling the community's problems begins

with taking down drug dealers and then untangling the web from there. the only really to address. >> the open air drug dealing is with enforcement. but the law and order approach to the drug crisis in its many layers is concerning for advocates of those who live in the tenderloin who are struggling with addiction and homelessness. one organization is bashing the state of emergency calling it unjustified. >> the executive director of the city's coalition on homelessness as mayor breed's proclamations vilify and the great people living in poverty stigmatizing them as criminals. police have limited tools to address socio economic issues. mainly weapons enforcement and arrests and they already have a heavy presence in the neighborhood tenderloin residents have been told volmar rubble. people will be offered resources while the criminal element is being eradicated. the residents are finally feeling heard. and yeah, i do feel like there's a long time coming and reporting in san francisco. dan thorn kron 4 news.

>> an emotional day in a minnesota courtroom as former police officer kim potter took the stand. she is accused of shooting 20 year-old dante wright back in april. now potter claims she meant to draw her taser instead of her gun. kelly benson has more from her testimony. >> we're trying to keep him from driving away. it's just one. had a former minnesota police officer kim potter taking the stand in her own defense. >> during an emotional testimony maintaining she meant to draw her taser instead of her gun to stop 20 year old dante wright from fleeing while officers were trying to arrest him during a traffic stop on an outstanding warrant. video of the shooting

good morning, everybody. and cool. it will be this afternoon. this is treating the lots of sunshine to take yolr shades along with you to, but still definitely want to bundle up a little bit. >> as we look for high temperatures, if you're lucky in the mid 50's going on. a chilly start. it was though, with temperature readings in the 30's. lots of sunshine already getting a head start here at half moon bay. look at that. we have some fog issues, though, around the delta as we start our day. and there's technically a dense fog advisory that has been po1ted for solano county that until 11 o'clock. this is very clear on what we see here in terms of the fog mixing out. it will also suppress some of those temperatures in portions of contra, costa county, too. even into the afternoon. as you basically have to deal with kind of overcast going on. so here's a look at temperatures now 30's up to the north bay their 37 to the 40's line at the east bay shoreline. but freeman still shivering at 33 it might be that the 8 o'clock numbers haven't come in for them yet 33 also for livermore 37 san jose, when tracker not much going on. just a little bit of an offshore wind at hand. that will be a slight player as we

get into early next week. by the way, was we look ahead for today that mostly cloudy that's telling you what's going on around the delta with the fog remaining 40's as we get into the afternoon, that will be kind of a chilly spot going on. but we will see some 50's as well. a closer look at your forecast in just a bit. well. thanks, dave. our top story today. top health officials saying the omicron variant. >> of covid-19 is increasing rapidly around the world. it is expected to become the dominant strain in the united states in the coming weeks as it has and other countries. now, though, we haven't seen quite the surge. places like london and new york are already dealing with. we do know the variant is here in the bay area. kron fours camila barco live in the newsroom this morning with more details camila. >> good morning. also, yeah. omicron variant has now been detected in 6 of the 9 bay area counties and the fears of a winter covid surge grow larger by the as more and more of these cases are detected.

the chair of the ucsf department of medicine. doctor bob wachter cause the omicron variant. another covid curve ball. he suspects that these covid cases are going to climb soon. and fast and this comes as health officials in napa, sonoma and marin counties have all confirmed their first case of the omicron variant officials say that the patients in sonoma and marin counties recently traveled out of state napa county officials did not share any details about their positive case. and at this time, no cases have been detected in contra. costa san mateo and solano counties. now local health experts predict the omicron variant will add to the surge of cases after the holidays and with the vaccines at hand, more people will be gathering this year. however, one health officer, one local health officer says that you can do so safely with these tips. >> does the rest of it spread to the air. so we want to make sure that we're covering faces in indoor public if you're

right now. very long lines of people waiting to be tested for covid-19 cases have skyrocketed. there. new york leaders reporting just more than 21,000 new infections on friday alone. that's the highest single-day total during the pandemic. now, while the surge has been largely fueled by the delta variant of covid-19 officials say omicron accounted for 13% of new cases while hospitalizations are nowhere near what they were this time last year. they have climbed 25% in just the past 2 weeks. overwhelmingly, though, among the unvaccinated now due to the increase in cases there in new york. numerous broadway shows have been canceled. most notably the rockettes have canceled the rest of their season because of some positive covid cases among its dancers. it was scheduled to end january second, but they canceled their performance friday just 45 minutes before the rockettes were supposed to go on. other shows like milan rouge and hamilton on broadway

and more cases are detected now the chair of the ucsf department of medicine. doctor bob wachter calls the omicron variant another covid curve ball. he suspects that covid cases are going to climb soon. and fast. and this comes as health officials in napa, sonoma and marin counties have all confirmed the first case of the omicron variant officials say the patients in sonoma and marin counties recently traveled out of the state. napa county officials did not share any details about their positive case. and at this time, no cases have been detected in contra. costa san mateo and solano counties. but one local health officer says that we should assume on the kron is everywhere. >> they really do assume that the virus is here and is with us. confirmation of that in our wastewater sampling. so we do so it's late. we've also seen evidence of omicron earlier in the week in several of our our sampling error is across the county. >> now, public health officers like the one you just heard
