at known. >> and now at 9. the recent spike in covid cases is causing huge demand for testing and before a gathering for christmas and for the new year's parties. a lot of people are scrambling to get tested. good evening, everyone. i'm catherine heenan and i'm dan thorn. many americans are facing the possibility that they'll have to cancel their plans. >> altogether as the number of testing opportunities dwindles ahead of this weekend to know ford has more on the new hot item for the holidays. >> this holiday season. the hottest commodity just might be a covid test last week and got a negative test. >> and before traveling for the holiday. i want to get its another to make sure across the country sold out signs were at home tests. normally sit in pharmacies. >> and long lines wrapped around testing centers. i'm here in our early. yeah. because you have to do what you got to do is the latest supply chain really hard to find anyone that does covid testing facilitated by a mix

of holiday travel family gatherings and the rapid surge of covid cases filled by the new omicron variant faced with a high demand. some sites of up the price of testing to nearly $400 for those paying out of pocket. the issues trickling down to labs task processing the samples and sending out results feel like right now the system is overwhelmed. we just actually got a call from one of the major labs that they got. >> they are so overwhelmed. they wanted us to send a list of how many pcr as we said yesterday. so that's how disorganized it is. tuesday. president joe biden rolling out a plan to set up federal testing across the country and then half a billion at-home test kits to those who want them with delivery starting in january. >> we begin in these checks to americans for sri. will have websites where you can get them delivered to your home. but that relief will come in time for people wanting to see loved ones for christmas and new year's state leaders now trying to help and new york efforts to increase the number of testing sites this week.

>> and in california, governor gavin newsome has vowed to extend testing hours and hand out test kits to students at every public school. you know, fort news nation. >> the cdc has shortened the required isolation period for health care workers who test positive for covid the agency now says workers can return to work 7 days after testing positive instead of 10 that isolation time can be cut even further. if there are staffing shortages. and the cdc also says health care workers who have gotten their booster shot do not need to quarantine at all. even if they've been exposed to covid. this comes as the looming surge of covid cases is expected to put new stress and the countries health care system. to the north by now for our coronavirus coverage. sonoma county. >> is now mandating booster shots for certain workers. those workers will include school employees emergency medical workers, pharmacy workers. they will have to get a booster by february first as

people today because of covid delta and united airlines had to cancel hundreds of flights across the country for christmas eve and christmas day. >> well, the reason is covid related staffing shortages sfo having those cancellations and delays flashing on their flight. bortz kron four's rob nesbitt tells us how travelers are reacting. >> the travelers i spoke to say that they got a text alert on their phones, letting them know that the omicron variant is to blame for canceling their christmas eve flights. >> from security lines to checking luggage. patrick schuler went to the motions at sfo to make it home in time for christmas for one to make my mom happy. he was ready for a hectic day of travel back home to new jersey. but he was not prepared for the alert he received from united text message this morning saying that my flight was canceled earlier and then they reschedule me for now. so i'm hoping i can get out now. delta and united airlines both had to cancel hundreds of flights because of the new variant of covid-19 united releasing a statement saying, quote, the nationwide spike in

omicron cases this week has had a direct impact on our flight crews and the people who run our operations as a result, we've unfortunately had to cancel some flights and are notifying impacted customers in advance of them. coming to the airport. airlines have been doing a great job. just managing the checkin lies airport duty manager and the wind expects that around 54,000 travelers will depart from sfo christmas eve, but not everyone is boarding on schedule by midday. the flight boards were flashing 77 delays and 37 cancellations. when recommends travelers take proactive steps before leaving for the airport. definitely check with the airlines. make sure your flight is on time if there's any changes to your departure times and give yourself a lot of time. so you're not rush incumbent trying to get through here. according to win the majority of cancellations at sfo where united flights, both united and delta say they're working to rebook as many passengers as possible to get them to their destinations on time. it said would you like to reschedule. this is the flight that we're going to put you on. and i was like, sounds good. omicron is that the only reason for flight

cancellations. delta says they canceled flights because of covid as well as the possibility for bad weather rain here on the west coast and snowstorms on the east coast. i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news. >> well, in addition to the united and delta airlines canceling a number of flights jetblue had to cancel more than 50 of their flights today across the country, which is about 5% of its overall schedule alaska airlines also experiencing delays and cancellations because of omicron in the past 2 days they've had to cancel nearly 30 flights. >> all right. time to take a look at the 4 zone forecast as we get this, a pretty view of coit tower and san francisco kron four's erica caturay joining us now with a look at what to expect a erica. hey, good evening. while heavier rain is on the way right now. not too much action east bay. we do see a couple of wet just near livermore looking wet over there. >> and then also in real this time. but if you look in the san jose area looking pretty quiet right now. that won't be

the case tomorrow morning peninsula. also looking dry seeing some light showers out here though. the green san francisco also looking quiet as well as the north bay. now the north bay is going to get hit first with the system that will be approaching. so let's take a look at future cast here. this is around 6.30 tomorrow morning. you can see it starts to enter this front. heavy downpour here. this is around 9 o'clock still in the north bay marine county getting those showers and this system will continue to shift southwards. you could see some thunderstorms with this as well. and here just after 1230 tomorrow. seeing a moderate even heavy showers popping up in the east bay as well as the peninsula and the south bay gets that around 2 o'clock tomorrow it will continue to be wet throughout the evening with pop up showers after that. and we could possibly even see some gusting out in the higher elevations in the

bay area tomorrow. winds will also pick up in the morning as well. our temperatures will be in the upper 40's to low 50's across san francisco along the peninsula here 54 and a half moon bay as well as in millbrae tomorrow, 55 in redwood city, south bay looking low 50's for morgan hill, 54 for campbell 53 out in milpitas tomorrow looking at 50 for livermore too. thin knoll here cooler in orinda at 48 tomorrow 49 in moraga. >> as well as pittsburgh 54 our high in vacaville tomorrow and in the north bay 47 for santa rosa and 51 for a daytime high in petaluma. we're talking about all this rain not just tomorrow but sunday as well. and even through a tuesday, we've got some rain chances in the bay area. >> still welcoming the right, right. absolutely. good weekend for hanging out and having hot chocolate open gifts and just enjoy.

definitely going circa. crews are working for hours to clear a crash and an oil spill on 6 ad and fremont which happened early this morning. there's big rig was filled with overturned and it shut down the freeway forcing hundreds of people to evacuate their homes. kron four's. gayle ong reports. >> first responders and a hazmat crews spent much of christmas eve cleaning up 6.80 in fremont after about 7900 gallons of gasoline still into a storm drain and retention pond. >> much of the fuel that was on board that tanker trailer. spill out. and so the cleanup has been there's been, you know, it's it's very detailed before this big rig overturned officer tyler hahn with the california highway patrol says the truck was involved in a crash with a stalled suv that spun out of the driver did makes and the base of. >> movement. you know, apply.

fremont fire department of fish and game and caltrans all working to clear the scene in fremont. gayle ong kron 4 >> the napa county sheriff's office says that a body that was found does appear to be that of crystal mccarthy who had been missing for more than a week a sheriff's deputy spotted a woman's body in the river near the 3rd street bridge in that by yesterday, an autopsy is scheduled for next week. mccarthy's boyfriend who reported her missing says she was last seen near the napa river 10 days ago. police also found mccarthy's boots and other personal items near the river in the south bay tonight, morgan hill police believe that day have arrested a man who they say killed a woman in the executive in on conditt wrote on wednesday. >> police say when they arrived on the scene, the victim was unconscious and was found in a room on the lower level of the she was taken to the hospital where she later died during their investigation. police found a

man who they believe is responsible. william sutherland. he was there on the scene. he has now been booked into the santa clara county jail. >> santa rosa. police are asking for the public's help in finding a 13 year-old girl. her name is sophia glenn. the dock us police say that she left her home and the area of summerfield road and gulfview court last sunday. she maintained foco contact with her family until 2 days ago. sophie is described as 5 foot 4 weighing about a 100 pounds. if anyone has information they're being asked to call santa rosa police chp is investigating tonight a freeway shooting that injured a driver overnight in danville, kron four's haaziq madyun has the latest on that investigation. >> buy that car to car incident on 6 ad leads to flashing lights traffic grinding to a halt and first responders on the scene late thursday night responded to a call of a shooting on or about the city north of wrote that

is where chp officer it give a go says a male driver and female passenger were traveling. the black nissan rogue around 02:00pm when the shooting occurred. no suspect vehicle pull off alongside that he saw a lot of the suspect vehicle fired multiple rounds in the direction of the investigators say several bullets pierced the nissan and will did the male driver. driver of the nissan was transported to a local hospital and yes, suspected critical injuries. female passenger was uninjured. >> friday at 06:00pm marks the beginning of the california highway patrol maximum enforcement period over the christmas holiday weekend. ending sunday at around midnight. in addition to looking for drivers under the influence chp officers who are seeking any leads to help them find the unknown shooter. in this case officer vega says investigators are asking for the community's help. please

able to open a treatment center in the tenderloin area. they also plan to crack down on people who refused to get help for substance abuse issues. now, this is all part of mayor london breed. state of emergency in the tenderloin neighborhood. the declaration allows the city to set up a treatment side for people with a drug addiction. they can go receive services and treatments and city officials say the people abusing these drugs have the option to go to that service center. but if they refuse mayor breed says that they are looking at the pissibility of going to jail. she says this plan is going to happen in 3 phases. and the idea is to make the neighborhood safe and healthy for not only the community but for the people dealing with their drug addictions. this is a place that we can pull people in. >> get them warm and dry get them fed and and and have connected to all of the many, many services and resources that the city has city

officials say an average of 2 people a day are dying of drug overdoses in san francisco. >> and most of those are happening in the tenderloin or so many neighborhoods. now it's unclear when the treatment center is going to open. however, mayor breed says that the emergency declaration. >> helps speed up the process. she says it can be set up in as fast as 2 to 3 weeks in the newsroom. camila barco kron 4 news. >> one person was killed on interstate 5 in los angeles this morning following a multi vehicle pileup at least 9 cars, including 2 big rigs were involved in the collisions that happened around 8 o'clock this morning. firefighters had to extricate people from their vehicles because they were trapped inside. one person died at the scene. 3 others were taken to area hospitals. the pileup shut down 3 lanes of the freeway for several hours while police worked and investigated. also in los angeles. authorities identifying a teenage girl who was killed when an officer's bullet pierced through a fitting room wall. it happened

shot and killed. but then a store canvas uncovered tragedy. we found a hole in the wall. >> and behind age, the dry wall solid wall that you can't see behind. we went behind it. it turned out to be the dressing room of there. and what we did is we were able to locate a 14 year-old female who was found deceased in that dressing room. the teen killed had been trying on clothes while christmas shopping with her mother. i can imagine, you know, her just like nothing coming shopping for christmas. >> and then, you know, she gets killed. >> the woman initially attacked by the suspect remains hospitalized. we don't know if there's any type of. >> connection or relationship between the woman that was assaulted who was transferred to the hospital and the suspect. >> they were just christmas shopping. you know, trying on clothes, maybe what to wear tonight. you know, because of the community. we celebrate tonight. so i mean, just, you know, walking away with her dead daughter. it's it's very sad.

this week. carnival says an undisclosed number of passengers and crew aboard it freedom cruise line became infected as a result, the ship was denied entry to bonaire and aruba some 2500 passengers are on board with a crew of just over a 1000. it's now set to return to miami on sunday and at the same time, the state of florida reports a record high daily number of new covid-19 cases totaling almost 32,000 despite coming from the highly contagious omicron variant. >> if you're heading to lake tahoe for christmas travel could get very dangerous, very messy over the next few days. storms could bring up to a 10 feet of new snow on the sierra through the weekend that could lead to major delays and road closures. drivers as always being urged to be ready with chains and emergency kits and just stay off mountain roads of possible altogether.

>> yeah. we've already gotten a couple feet of snow out in the sierra. here are some of our totals just from today. diamond peak 36 inches sugar bowl. a couple of feet of snow there in homewood mountain about 20 inches of snow today. there is an avalanche warning that will be in effect. it was actually extended through monday because of the heavy snowfall and very windy conditions. not a good time to be traveling out to the sierra this elevations over 7,000 feet. a 7,000 feet expected to get 7 feet of snow by sunday past that even more accumulating with the sierra ridge gusts hitting 100 miles per hour. lower elevations up to 40 miles per hour. so here's a look at our temperatures out there. these next few days and notice the change there from tomorrow's high time monday freezing 24 degrees. by then here in the bay area. we might see some

gusting in the very high mountains and the higter elevations like mount diablo believe the elevations about 3,000 feet. we could see a little bit of snow maybe even some hail and some parts of the bay area. but here we see that system that will hit come early morning tomorrow by 1045 here that system passes through the north bay. and then you see here heavy rain and san francisco in the peninsula as well as the east bay and then it shifts through the south bay in the afternoon just before 3 o'clock. this is what we're picking up on a satellite and radar winds are also going to increase tomorrow morning as well. by 8.30, notice some pop rain cells here, moderate showers on and off. so here's our 7 day extended forecast. we do have a chance of pretty much every day through wednesday of next week. and then those temperatures dipping down for overnight lows into the 30's.

mayor london breed's state of emergency for drug overdoses in the tenderloin has passed supervisors in support of the plan. hope it will cut through red tape to more efficiently help the district's drug users who are a danger to themselves and the families living in the area tom wolf spoke in the public comments he fell victim to drug use himself while working for the city of san francisco. bottom line is that most people that are on the street don't even know where they can go. >> to start the process to access truck treatment. so it hasn't been promoted on the street. >> after serving time he has since recovered and most recently served instead on the city's drug task force wolf, who got sober in jail believes that the state of emergency as a step in the right direction. assuring accountability is key. there's a subset. >> people living on the street that require intervention. i required intervention. to get off the street and that intervention, you know, came through law enforcement is that the ideal way, not necessarily but is law

enforcement going to play a role and do they need to play a role. absolutely. they do well. stresses california needs to expand a statewide subsidize drug treatment and housing program. >> until then, he says leaving addicts in the street to continue using and being tempted by dealers is not an option. he believes that this plan will include much more than policing. >> while police are going to play a role. this is really a public health declaration to ask for additional help and services and to be able to fast track additional help and services for people that are struggling with homelessness for people that are struggling with addiction. >> wolf hopes this new plan will include more opportunities for recovery. the rehab and drug treatment and in turn will reduce harm to not only the addicted but the entire tenderloin community. >> that was also the money and reporting for us tonight. still ahead, the christmas package thief, another porch pirate who turned out to be. what a little dog. and don't
