mad. and of course, coach the raiders from 1967 until 1978. >> leading them to the super bowl. super bowl 11 and they won the championship. but perhaps more than that, he's best known as a football announcer and the face of the immensely popular video game franchise. kron four's. kate rooney live for us in our newsroom with a look at the hall of famer's career. kate. >> it really was an incredible career simply one of the most impactful individuals in the game of pro football and it was late this afternoon that the nfl announced maddon's unexpected passing this morning. he was beloved throughout the game of football, but perhaps especially here in the bay area as the oakland raiders head coach from, as you said, ken 1969 to 78 he led the team to the conference championship in 8 of his 10 seasons. >> never had a losing record and brought a lombardi trophy to oakland in super bowl 11. then another generation of football fans got to know matt and as a broadcaster where he served as a color analyst for every major network and on monday night football. and he

also, of course, loan his name and voice to the madden nfl video game franchise. one of the most popular video game franchises ever since the nfl made the announcement, the tributes have just been pouring in. even steve kerr made sure to honor madden before tonight's warriors game. >> i wanted acknowledge passing of john we just saw the news in there. on behalf of the organization. i just want to send our condolences to the madden family and and what a life. incredible figure in american and obviously, you know, legend here in the bay area both for the resident and also, you know what he did with the raiders, an. what he did for sports broadcasting. our thoughts go out to the mat and family well, i want to what a life he led. >> yeah. you know, it's been a

life well lived when everyone from governor gavin newsome to lebron james to dan rather pays tribute on twitter and those tributes are still rolling in ken and catherine. >> yeah, he definitely bled silver and black. a local guy who just had a phenomenal career on different levels. kate, thank you for that report. we'll have more on his life and career a little bit later on during this newscast. now to our coronavirus coverage and with the omicron variant surging contra. costa county is making a couple of big changes. >> beginning tomorrow everyone will have to wear masks in public indoor settings regardless of vaccination status. the county also implementing a vaccine booster mandate. first responders will have until january 10th to get a booster. how still have to get tested weekly. the new requirement applies to law enforcement officers. firefighters emergency workers, the average daily number of new cases in contra, costa county. that number has

risen 156% in just the past week with an average of 313 new cases every day. >> and in the south bay, santa clara county is requiring first responders who work in high-risk environments to get their booster shots. the deadline there is january 24th the counties also are urging businesses to put in similar requirements for their employees and asked customers show proof of vaccination if they don't wear masks indoors health officials there are also asking people to reconsider their new year's eve plans. >> at this point with omicron. surging the way that it i would not recommend. new year's celebrations unless they are small, small intimate gatherings is the way to go. this new year's. it's not the time to go to a large gathering.

>> contra. costa county has seen its number of covid cases triple in the past 3 weeks. >> new year's eve events all over the bay area are being affected by covid san francisco leaders announcing today that the big fireworks show has been canceled because of the ongoing threat of covid kron four's. rob nesbitt shows us how people are being forced to adjust their celebration plants. >> from fireworks to concerts. several new year's eve celebrations have been canceled. the organizers say they don't want to run the risk of hosting a super spreader event. the san francisco skyline won't be nearly as bright as people had hoped for new year's eve. the city canceling this year's fireworks show to reduce people's exposure to the omicron variant. just one of the many events in the bay area, not happening this year, including the new year's eve balloon drop at the schultz museum in santa rosa is the biggest day of the year for us use director gina hunt singer was expecting around 400 people at each of her to schedule balloon drops until

omicron the new variant canceling this year's celebration. given this new situation is just not prudent anymore. >> to have people that close to each other in our great hall waiting for balloons to drop. others are following >> the san francisco chamber orchestra announced this week that they're postponing their new year's eve in oakland. the new parkway theater will have their last movie showings on thursday until covid numbers improve. i guess you can call it a definite carlos day is in charge of community outreach at the theater and says the venue will still offer takeout delivery and private party rentals on weekends. regular hours will be ending to err on the side of caution. so like 2 years now. >> we've had 0 covid transmissions we want to. try to keep that up as long as possible. infectious disease expert at uc berkeley doctor john swartzberg says colder weather combined with indoor celebrations, create a perfect storm for covid transmission. >> he remains optimistic when it comes to vaccine

effectiveness and the current state of hospital icus very reassuring to see the disconnect between. >> the number of cases we're reporting in the hospitalization rates remaining fairly low. >> despite the cancel fireworks. san francisco says they will still the point the city's emergency operations center for new year's eve to support citywide coordination in san francisco. i'm rob nesbitt kron 4 news. >> taking a live look now near south lake tahoe. this is how it looks at highway 50 near meyers and traffic's actually moving. look at that line of vehicles coming in from over the past and heading toward the center of south lake tahoe. it's all backed up there. it's much different scene from yesterday when the road here was cover with a lot of snow and there was basically no traffic between myers and pass reveal. that is no longer the case highway 50 again is back open along with eastbound interstate 80 heading toward truckee in the north shore and even though traffic is starting to move again. caltrans is asking

everyone for one to be extremely careful in for 2 to be extremely patient because even though the roads are open, it is still very slow going over the mountains. >> my number one tip for anyone planning to travel from sacramento to truck in reno or be on is to slow down the roads are still very, very icy chain controls remain in effect. if you do not slow down, you will crash and the road will close again. >> don't want that to happen, although eastbound interstate 80 is open. the westbound lanes remain closed. so if you get up there, you might have trouble getting back. there is no timeline for when the westbound lanes on interstate 80 will open. so keep that in mind, heading up there now to our 4 zone forecast here. let's take a look at the golden gate bridge. nice and quiet dry and clear and let's go back to chief meteorologist lawrence karnow you're talking

about more rain coming and maybe more snow yet more snow in our local mountain tops to maybe not as impressive i mean, it's just tremendous amounts maybe record amounts of snow. they've seen up there for december. but we're going to see. >> a few more inches of snow possibly across some of the higher peaks. the clouds are out there now. the chilly temperatures already in place. >> of course, we have a very cold air early on this morning 500 feet in the north bay things kind of breaking up a in the evening hours. but then start to pick up again. now you can see in the north bay toward clear lake. you've got a couple of pop-up snow showers across some of the mountain tops. there are going to see more of that. i think late tonight, early tomorrow morning. it's getting cold out there. you've got 43 degrees in santa rosa 45 in napa. 48 and san jose and 48 degrees in san francisco models are picking up on wrist who going to see some of the precipitation developing throughout the night, maybe even some isolated thunderstorms. but i think after midnight, i think that's when the brunt of the system

starts to move into the bay area. you can see starting to see some of those colors change in parts of the northeast are to see some sleet, some snow begin to develop early tomorrow morning. that continue into the mornhng hours. but the rest, the bay area going to the west. so driving to work tomorrow. it's going to be a little slick out there early on by the middle of the day, probably start to break things up by the afternoon, more widely scattered showers around the bay area. so yes, more snow on the mountain top to look up to in the afternoon tomorrow. the skies begin to part a little bit. the temperatures going to be chilly. keep your jackets handy 40's and 50's for highs. >> thank you, lawrence. coming up at 8 o'clock a mile high fight between a former raiders cheerleader and an 80 year-old man. what the fbi is saying tonight. >> and a family demanding justice after a police officer killed their daughter while she was shopping for and their address tonight we're hearing from the teenager's parents. >> also questions remain about the body of a missing woman found in napa. her father talked to kron 4.

>> a missing person investigation involving an apple woman remains open after a body matching her description was found on december 23rd the father of the missing woman says he talked to his daughter several times the night that she was reported missing today. he talked with own forces. a june. it's an interview you'll see only here on kron 4. >> there's turner again.

>> chris and i were very, very close, very close you're looking at a photo of mark mccarthy and his daughter crystal during happier times on 12/13/2021 she was reported missing in the city of napa. her friends organized multiple searches. 2 days later, a body matching her description was found floating in the napa river. it's been a nightmare is just like so. unreal that. i'm not this. >> turn the processes and just i have my moments as waves of. aguer it's this believe krista mccarthy's father mark mccarthy lives in the southern part of the country and says he often speaks to his daughter at least 3 times a day as he did that night before she was reported missing some defining to just check and then lets you know, we always acted for daily napa police investigators say that

don't feel like i'm getting answers. >> anyone with information about what happened to crystal mccarthy is asked to contact napa police. zikmund kron 4 news. >> turning now to our 4 zone forecast. we've been seeing some snow here in the bay area. take a look at this video from the santa rosa fire department this morning. some light snow. see a few little snow flakes coming down this is in the north bay. some the highest peaks in the bay area could see about an inch even up to 3 inches of snow today and into later tonight. >> and taking a look at mount a lean and sonoma county. this is in the robert louis stevenson state park and it's beautiful of snow covering the trees, snow all over the place. it was a lovely sight. >> there's also snow on mount diablo in contra costa county. not that unusual. it's one the highest peaks in the bay area here's a time lapse video from a pga or wildfire camera earlier today. snow there.

snow and also mount hamilton in the south bay kron 4 chiefmeteorologist or as carl here with it. look at the 4 zone forecast any more snow coming our way. yeah, we've got more snow coming tonight. air. >> not going to be quite as cold as it was last night. that was a very, very cold. so instead of down to maybe 500 feet where you might see a couple of snowflakes probably tonight, probably about 2500 feet or so. so to see some snow capped mountains around the bay area and speaking of how about this. here's donner summit. you can see people headed up to the slopes. right now. it is slow going up there and look at the cars and look at the size of the snow bacon that amazing making those cars look so small. but that gives you an idea of the tremendous amount of snow we've seen in just the past couple of weeks. winter storm warnings. they're going to get another foot, maybe 2 feet of snow across the higher peaks, the warnings all the way down to 2000 feet. so that's what you're dealing with you. if you're driving up there, you could be looking at some white out conditions tonight as that next round of snow comes in again, it's going to be blustery conditions up there as not only there but in northern california, you're seeing some of that as you make your way up redding. shasta area.

winter weather advisories going to see more snow down in the clear lake in lake county. and this is just all addinn to some tremendous totals. we're now seeing at over a 160% in the southern sierra the in the central and almost a 150% now in the northern sierra nevada water content running about 20225% of normal right here for forecast model for the period here as we take through the night tonight. very stormy night. again. plenty of snow across the peaks, then we're going to get a break if you want to get up to the slopes. we're looking good on friday in this saturday, the beginning of the new year. looks like those roadways are nice note. you have plenty of powder to ski on. if you can wait a little bit. that's probably best but be prepared if you stay too long in the high sierra by the middle of next week. more storm clouds roll in and more snow to guys. back to you. thank you, lawrence. there is new information on the shooting spree in denver. we first brought you as breaking news last night. >> police now say it happened across 6 different crime

scenes reporter lisa d'souza has the latest from colorado. >> to have this type of spree take place is not normal for our community. a night of terror in the denver metro area. there was a series of violent incidences that we believe started in denver. at least 5 people dead and another 3 injured after a string of shootings at this point. there's only lead to one suspect. we seen that guy. he was a tall man won hair with a trench coat. the shootings began at 05:00pm in denver when a man opened fire on 3 people killing 2 and injuring a 3rd. >> police say the man then traveled about 2 miles before shooting and killing another. they say he opened fire once more in denver. but don't believe anyone was hurt in that shooting. then police caught up with him. there was a pursuit that ensued. there was an exchange of gunfire. fortunately our officers were not injured as a result we

believe the individual after disabling. >> the police car fled into lakewood. >> at that time once in lakewood, a suburb of denver. the killing spree continued the suspect shooting and killing one person and a business. >> lakewood police were able to quickly catch up to him near a popular shopping area. another round of gunfire was exchanged before he slipped away into the shopping center. he allegedly felony menaced a another with a firearm. >> before then retreating to hi dot he did allegedly shoots one of the clerks there. that person was taken to the hospital. we do know the extent of the injuries there. >> after fleeing the hyatt place. the shooter was approached by an officer. the officer yelled she out, put your gun down and he turned around and i pulled up the gun and shot her right in front multiple times following that exchange officers in the suspect exchanged fire again and the suspect was killed

>> tonight. we are hearing from the family of the 14 year-old girl who was accidentally shot and killed by a los angeles police officer happened last thursday. it happened at a burlington coat factory store in north hollywood. the parents are describing their daughter's final moments as she died in her mother's arms. kimberly chang has the story. so. >> look, we're trying out close for christmas. we heard some screams. we sat down and hugged and started praying when something impacted my daughter it threw us on the floor. and she died in my

arms. through translator. soledad, for also talked about losing her 14 year-old daughter valentino already on a pearl to to see a son, our daughter die in your arms. >> is one of the pains, the greatest pains and most profound pains. >> that any human being can imagine. >> the family spoke publicly a day after lapd released footage from december 23rd at the burlington clothing store in north hollywood. officers were called to stop a man who was inside attacking people with a bicycle chain. police opened fire and killed the suspect. 24 year-old daniel lopez. but during that shooting, an lmpd bullet entered a wall and struck and killed the teen. an innocent bystander. it was foreseeable. >> that 2 days before christmas. that there were going to be people in a shopping shopping. >> valentino's father juan pablo already on alert in us travel to the u.s. to spend christmas with his daughter.

guidance now says people without symptoms should isolate for just 5 days instead of 10. >> inevitably going to have more and more and more people getting infected with the omicron variant. >> white house chief medical advisor doctor anthony fauci says the decision was made to help keep the economy open people with important jobs in keeping society functioning may not be able to come to work if they're all out for a full 10 days. florida republican senator marco rubio says the updated guidance is something he had been pushing for in the middle of a worker shortage. >> a massive number workers isolated for 10 days. sick. >> but doctor fauci told me he wants to be clear about recent comments that seemed to call for vaccine mandates for domestic airline passengers. he says that's not what he meant. and i think it's important to seriously consider it. i did not say it should be done as cases in

>> sparkling out there. lawrence. a very nice said getting enjoying this break in the in the rain. yeah, nice to get a little bit of a break. space out the storm just a bit. we've got more rain on the way, though that's going to be moving in later tonight. i think the commute you have a little slick early on tomorrow. morning dry out there right now up toward the golden gate bridge kind of quiet, other just a few cars. >> going by. but we've got in laura's forecast coming through. you've got this next wave that's going to move in overnight tonight and tomorrow morning again, bring some snow on the summer mountain peaks as well. that's getting out of town by tomorrow night. they're going to catch a much needed break. i think in the weather pattern as we get into thursday the last day of the year. as on friday. looks like that should be mostly dry and saturday was ring in the new year. on the dry side, too. but after that things begin to change in the pattern of staying active and we'll see another front move in probably on monday to bring another round of some heavy rainfall to much of the bay area in northern california that continuing tuesday in a wednesday. maybe some late in the day on thursday with yet another storm system. so it's

all going to start that up again. some very impressive totals. and look at this. boy, it's just been something else december's been amazing. it's going to continue into the new year. look at all the snow over the sierra nevada. we're talking maybe another 6, maybe 7 feet of snow between now and the middle of next week. and of course, a lot for the bay area to this first system going to be fairly light. you're talking less than an inch of rain, but then we start to add the totals we get into that storm system next weekend. there you go. get some press. it again to 3 and a half inches of rain around parts of the bay area and a lot more of our mountain tops tomorrow. it's going to be showery. a little wet in the morning, especially tapering off in the afternoon. temperatures are going to be chilly, though 40's and some low 50's for highs. the next few days as we round out 2021 we're going to dry things out on thursday and friday saturday. we start out dry sunday. looking good. but by next monday it is back to rain. >> thank you, lawrence. start 8 o'clock, a former baywatch actress caught on camera attacking an 80 year-old man on a plane. what apparently

>> investigators are trying to figure out what caused the plane to crash into a san diego county neighborhood happened on monday. it took off from john wayne airport in orange county was supposed to land at gillespie field about a half hour east of downtown san diego reporter keely be sun. has the story. >> this video captured from a you could see a plane crash in neighborhood northeast of san diego. they like to said lights. you know, like blue life red lights. and open.

>> we don't know if the and how did it happen? what happened? why did it happen? >> the national weather service describes sky conditions in that area as fog mist monday evening and radio communications between the jet in the air field. >> indicated that rubble. happened suddenly or what you change from to months. >> the they're at a 100% now. >> it still remains unclear what caused the aircraft to go down. >> the plane can be seen plummeting in surveillance video as a flash of bright >> crews dousing small fires along the street littered with debris and downed power lines. one damage and power was knocked out for hundreds of residents in the area that appears to bulls were taken out. >> and wires were dropped to the ground. so that's shorted out the power.

the flight attendant asked her to find an open seat until the service was complete. cornwall then said, quote, what am i rosa parks. an 80 year-old man told cornwall that her comment was inappropriate after a verbal exchange cornwall as seen on video hitting the man several times and spitting on him. she is now facing a year in jail and up to a $100,000 fine. several new state laws will take effect in the new year. our ashle0 zavala explains the new rules that will affect california workers. >> new state laws will change some regulations for workplaces across california in january. the state's minimum wage will increase to $15 an hour for workplaces with more than 26 employees and $14 for those with less than 26 employees. in addition to the pay increase workplace safety fines will also see a boost in the new year. the state's division of occupational safety and health can penalize workplaces for each employee affected by a violation of the state's health and safety rules larger employers with multiple

offices are hubs can have all of their locations penalized. if there's evidence of a pattern of violations at more than one location on workplace conduct, starting in 2022 california will ban the use of non-disclosure settlement agreements in workplace harassment and discrimination cases. in most cases the law will also prohibit employers from using severance agreements that would keep an employee from speaking out about illegal acts in the workplace. other labor laws affect specific industries, warehouses and distribution centers must provide new employees a written description of all quotas within a month of higher. those quotas can't come in the way of the workers legally required breaks for food delivery apps. it's illegal for the app to keep any portion of the tip from the delivery driver or restaurant for pickup orders. for garment workers. they must now be paid hourly instead of by piece with the exception of workplace is covered by collective bargaining agreement. fashion brands could be on the hook if they're contractors. violate labor laws in sacramento. ashley zavala kron 4 news.

original but started out as just another kid from the bay area. madden and his family moved to daly city when he was 7, he attended grade school and became good friends with john robinson who himself coached usc to a college national title and was head coach. the la rams for 9 seasons. a football star at jefferson high matt and finished his college career at cal poly san luis obispo then was chosen by the philadelphia eagles in the 21st round of the nfl draft in 1958. but a serious knee injury in training camp ended his professional playing career before it started while he was rehabbing however, that and got his first advanced education in football from eagles, nfl hall of fame quarterback norm, then brooklyn who spent the season with madden teaching him the nuances of the game and experience that inspired madden to go into coaching after helping correale make sdsu into one of the best small school programs in the country caught the eye of oakland raiders owner al davis

who hired him as the team's linebackers coach in 1967 after helping the raiders get to super bowl 2 as an assistant madden was hired as the team's head coach in 1969 at 32 the youngest in the nfl. but finally in 1976 everything came together for madden and the raiders led by hall of fame quarterback ken stabler and 7 other players who would later be enshrined in canton. maddon led the silver and black to a league best 13 1 record and more importantly a decisive win over their nemesis the pittsburgh steelers who had beaten them in 3 straight playoff games to earn a trip to super bowl 11 once they stamp their ticket to pasadena. no one was going to stop the raiders. and after telling the team in the locker room pre-game. this will be the single biggest event in your whole life as long as you win maddon and his raiders dominated the minnesota vikings to win the super bowl blowing the vikings out 32 to 14. it was the first world championship in franchise

the rose parade. i some of the merchandise for the rose parade specifically from o'fallon fallon. marching panthers are getting ready to make another appearance at the rose bowl parade. it's crazy how. >> a few bands are selected for event every year. and and how much is televised and how much the world gets to see of us. you know, we we actually got the acceptance a year ago. and so those students in that gets ago. but then they passed it to this band. we've been working really hard it's these crazy times you know, for the students to get this opportunity in the empty ban room. you can see evidence of the group's success. the more we do it tomorrow. reputation increases. this is bus number so tough. and by the members of this band say that the accomplishments like being invited to the rose bowl. never get old. i'm going to take so many pictures. my kids are going to hear about this. my grandkids are going to hear about this and hopefully my great grandkids taken the feelings we have right now. bottle it up and keep it for the rest of your life. >> in o'fallon, illinois. it's it's going to be great weight spent.
