exactly right now. well, another wet day, no big surprise at this point. we've been spending a lot of these days. this december on the weather side of things, whether it's been snowfall in the sierra or rainfall right across the bay area. >> now, here's some good news. we do have a break ahead of us thursday, friday, saturday and sunday will be breezy and dry weather at this point. much earned as well as much needed a couple of dry days will do us well, your view outside at san francisco shows the low clouds. it's misty to light showers right now. definitely not as heavy as it was at the start of the show earlier on. you are seeing some blew up in lake county. that is snowfall continuing to fall relatively low elevations up there, napa, sonoma and marin counties. it's all about light showers in some light sprinkles there on the peninsula starting to see it picking back up around pacifica. also some light sprinkles in the south bay really not a lot to note in the south bay at this point and a few light showers around concord along highway 4 zooming out. you can see we still do have heavy snow at times in the sierra today will be another day with 8 to 20 inches of snowfall in the

sierra and even the roadways are technically back opened 80 is only open for necessary travel. and i would wait until tomorrow to head up there with increasingly dry conditions from thursday through sunday. now rainfall will be heaviest this morning before tapering off later in the day today. we will get a break from it overnight tonight. and that just starts the break that takes us through the rest of this week. current temperatures a bit more mild than they were yesterday. mostly hanging out in the 40's fremont hayward alameda each at 47 oakland here at 48 degrees right now roadways were worse earlier on this morning, there's actually been some improvement out there. let's get a look at those road, shall we. we are seeing conditions that are much improved along 5.80 westbound that was a slow. and earlier major hot spot. that's since been cleared. 80 is looking good. 9 minutes from the maze to fremont street. there is some flooding of both the on and off-ramps both in oakland and on the san francisco side of the bridge. so be mindful of that really slow down as you're getting on to those connector ramps. san mateo

bridge 13 minutes from a 80 to one o one. the richmond center fell bridge. 10 minutes from the tolls to one o one. and we are also looking at a pretty smooth one across the golden gate bridge very empty. not a lot of you making this commute this morning, only 20 minutes from 37 to the tolls. back to, you know, well, thanks, john. >> well, a big story this morning, california is marking a pandemic milestone as the first state to record more than 5 million known covid infections. omicron driving up the new cases and now forcing many people to cancel their new year's eve plans the city of san francisco has canceled its new year's eve fireworks show the mayor citing concerns of bringing large groups of people together as covid cases continue to surge. it's now the second year in a row without the fireworks display in san francisco supervisor. matt haney says the city's concerned about health and safety and also about staffing shortages across the city. >> i think the decision from the city to cancel this was

not only about the concern of bringing everyone together at this number in the sense community spread. but it's also important for us to protect our city staff. you know, we are experiencing shortages because there are so many people were getting sick and they have to quarantine. >> several private venues across the city have also then can have also canceled their own new year's eve events. the fireworks show on the old sacramento waterfront has also been canceled due to the omicron variant officials there saying they're hoping for safer conditions for big groups next year. the spread of the omicron variant has local health officials releasing new voluntary guidelines for businesses. it's all part of an effort to increase the number of workers who are vaccinated kron four's camila barco joining us live in the newsroom with more about sonoma county health officials want businesses to be considering. >> well, sonoma county is suggesting that employers of any business require their employees to have their booster dose or get tested for covid twice a week now the

county's health officer says that this is to alleviate the number of covid cases and also the suggestions are voluntary but strongly encouraged these recommendations come after an increase in covid cases across the country, including the bay area. now since thanksgiving, the number of cases in sonoma county. tripled in unvaccinated people. and that's the highest since last august since late august, the number of cases in vaccinated. people also increased in the same period and the county is already implementing similar

orders employees at schools pharmacies dental offices disaster shelters and first responders are going to be required to have their booster shot if they don't, they must get covid tested twice a week and those orders are mandatory and start february 1st at this time, sonoma county officials are still going over these latest recommendations from the health officer. the county says that booster shots offered increased protection instead of just having the one or 2 covid-19 shots. they are strongly encouraging employers to consider requiring their employees to have their booster dose or get tested for covid twice a week while back to you. alright camila, thank you for that live report. >> down in the south bay santa clara county is requiring first responders who work in high-risk environments to get their booster shots as well. the deadline they're set for january 24th the county is also urging businesses to put in similar requirements for their employees and asked customers to show proof of

vaccination if they don't wear their masks indoors health officials there are also asking people to reconsider and the new year's eve plans. >> at this point with omicron. surging the way that it i would not recommend. new year's celebrations unless they are small, small intimate gatherings is the way to go. this new year's. it's not the time to go to a large gathering. >> santa clara county has seen its number of covid-19 cases triple in the past 3 weeks. and over in the east bay contra. costa county is now going to be requiring masks to be worn in all public indoor places. no exceptions previously fully vaccinated groups of 100 or fewer people were allowed to go maskless in certain settings like gyms or religious gatherings. but that's a no go. now the new order goes into effect today. cases and hospitalizations in the county involved. both

unvaccinated and fully vaccinated. people. in other news. another big story we're following this morning. the bay area and the game of football really has have lost a legend. former raiders coach and hall of fame broadcaster. john madden has passed away. he died at his home in pleasanton at the age of 85 yesterday. we never actually played pro football. he still had a profound effect on the game. by the way, he coached and the way we watch it when he began his career, he was the youngest head coach in nfl history at the age of 32 he would then lead the oakland raiders from 1969 until 1978 bring them their first super bowl victory in 1977 over the minnesota vikings. he never had a losing record as a coach madden was a beloved throughout the game of football fans got to know him as a broadcaster where he served as a color analyst for every major network. and on monday night football, of

welcome back. 7.10, on this wednesday morning. taking a live look. the sierra highway 26 at brockway. you can see the road has been clear just a bit. but oh, my goodness, all that snow piled up on the sides. we do see some travelers there headed this is highway 2.67, but just a reminder highway 80 has reopened but only to essential drivers and truck drivers as well as commercial vehicles highway 50 also back open. but caltrans still concerned about the high number of people trying to take that highway. so if you are trying to travel up that way. just be really, really mindful and maybe even weight build it to head up that way. john is taking another look, i think he's looking at highway 80 over there where again, it is open but only to certain drivers

this morning exactly. and my advice is the same no. well, wait until tomorrow because today is still a rough one. >> i just now really over the past 5 minutes started seymour commuter travel up there has no well as stress to you. we are still looking at just essential travel on 80. you can see we've got clouds up there still trying to make sure that roadway stays clear. we are looking at improved conditions for sure. from where we were. but still another 8 to 20 inches of snowfall in the sierra this morning is resulting in those problems. it's been a recordbreaking december at daughter 7, 202 inches of snow piled up. you can see those commuters still heading up officials are still urging you not to head up along 80 unless it is absolutely necessary and it's pretty easy to see why with winter storm warnings in effect until noontime today. we will get that break just around the corner. so if you can hold off till tomorrow. tomorrow is going to be so much better for your upper elevations. we are also in the winter weather advisory for upper elevations of lake and

humboldt counties, too snowfall this year is just keeps piling up we're well above average for this time of year. a 166% of average for the central sierra so take what we normally get during an average year and add another 50% of that on top of it. that's where we're sitting really, really good to be seeing that. of course, the big travel difficult. you can see the snowfall that we have a long both highway 50 and i 80 in the sierra nevada as well. some snow to upper elevations around clear lake rainfall light showers for the north bay from concord to antioch. you're running into light showers right along highway 4 there in the south bay from the south end of san jose to morgan hill. also a few sprinkles this morning. it's been system after system that just slides right on past the day this our final of the year because we do have that for daybreak that i've been mentioning. it's going to be cold still. but we at least are taking a break from the rain much-deserved at this point. honestly much needed allowing some of this pressure moisture to just soak into the ground and allowing us to get

back outside. you can see the showers that we do have this morning. heaviest of rainfall during the morning showers generally taper later on in the day today. snowfall does remain in the sierra nevada on into the afternoon, too. starting tonight. well, through sunday a break from the rain and snow. if you want to get up to lake tahoe for your new year's eve weekend. we have great conditions for it just head back by sunday as monday into tuesday. rain and snow pushes right back into the picture. today's daytime highs will be in the 50's for a lot of the bay area that's warmer than yesterday was, but certainly still cool today or last day of rain and snow across the region intel that break new year's eve evening. look at how cold it gets into the low to upper 30. so you want to layer up as much as possible monday into tuesday, rain and snow returns. now we have had multiple issues on our roadways this morning where we're at right now with the bay bridge. it's looking a whole lot better. 9 minutes to make your crossing there it is. slick, though. so please slow it down as you are making that crossing across the bay because traffic's not going to

do it for you. traffic's but light enough that we haven't had issues in that regard across 92 the san mateo bridge. it's really easy. no issues here. now the richmond center fell bridge. we actually do have a problem mid span on the bridge. there's a traffic hazard on the westbound lane on the richmond center fell bridge. this has the right lane affected temporarily. so i do want to give you a heads up on that. the golden gate bridge actually has what is an even greater incident. a traffic collision with injuries on the golden gate bridge southbound just north of the bridge itself and mid span on the bridge to so there's actually 2 incidents there. this is affecting the right lane again. that's southbound north of the golden gate bridge. and that is definitely something that could be holding you up for just a minute. noel. all right, john, thank you for that. >> for your money this morning. gas prices are expected to rise early next year into memorial day and cruise ships are confirming

latest on that fiery plane crash happened monday night near san diego. authorities say all 4 people on board that learjet were killed in the crash. they were reportedly 2 pilots and 2 nurses. they say the lear jet being used by a company to fly a patient from arizona to orange county. it was returning to its home base at gillespie field when it crashed, the victims names have not yet been publicly released the crash was caught on a home surveillance camera, though. no one on the ground was hurt. one house was damaged and power was knocked out in the area. the faa and the ntsb are still investigating. coming up on the kron 4 morning news, the white house is going to brief the nation on the spread of omicron with doctor anthony fauci is saying about americans flying within the united states. >> and after the break. a new year leading to new laws. the rules taking effect in 2022

minimum wage will increase to $15 an hour for workplaces with more than 26 employees and $14 for those with less than 26 employees. in addition to the pay increase workplace safety fines will also see a boost in the new year. the state's division of occupational safety and health can penalize workplaces for each employee affected by a violation of the state's health and safety rules larger employers with multiple offices are hubs can have all of their locations penalized. if there's evidence of a pattern of violations at more than one location on workplace conduct starting in 2022 california will ban the use of non-disclosure settlement agreements in workplace harassment and discrimination cases. in most cases the law will also prohibit employers from using severance agreements that would keep an employee from speaking out about illegal acts in the workplace. other labor laws affect specific industries warehouses and distribution centers must provide new employees, a written description of all quotas within a month of higher. those quotas can't come in the way of the workers legally

>> welcome back. just about to be 7.30 on this very wet wednesday morning. we're taking look at our weather forecast over there in the weather center. john trouble standing by. john, i know it's raining right now. are we going to see it throughout the rest of the day are. does it leave us at some point light showers for much of the day. there are no. well, the heaviest is this morning. so we'll see a little bit of a step back from it, at least later on. >> and then tonight we really start to dry out. we're going to stay that way on into thursday, friday saturday and sunday, too. so today is our last in the series of storms that have left us with record breaking snow in the sierra and some pretty historic december rainfall here in the bay too. looking outside at the embarcadero. we do have wet conditions there. looks like the seagulls are enjoying it. although i don't see a lot of people out there right now smartly waiting inside are

doing that work out indoors. i think we are looking at some showers still across the north bay light showers and sonoma and marin counties. some snow up there lake county. and then we're also looking at light showers working their way back on into the peninsula. pretty quiet actually for the south bay in the santa clara valley and on over towards the east bay eastern solano and contra costa counties are seeing some light rainfall currently futurecast shows us on and off rain with pockets of heavy through the rest of the morning. really light showers into the rest of the day after that, we will see snowfall amounting to anywhere from 8 to 20 inches in the sierra nevada today drying out after today and thursday. looks like an absolutely beautiful and dry one 40's for our current temperatures. this is a bit more mild to start this morning that where we were to start yesterday morning as for the bay bridge, it is looking. all right. we do have an incident on the golden gate bridge, though. so we're going to show the golden gate bridge first year. we do have a traffic collision with injuries on the golden gate bridge southbound right there

at mid span the right and center lanes are blocked in. this is resulting and a bit. a little bit of a slowdown out there right down in the middle of the golden gate bridge. now, as far as the bay bridge goes. it's been an easy go on the bridge itself. when you get on to those on and off ramps, though we do have some flooded spots both in the city of san francisco as well as in oakland that i want you to watch out for. well, the san mateo bridge from this earlier morning rainfall. but dried out now. no rain, actively falling. it's just wet from those showers. earlier and the richmond center fell bridge. 7 minutes, decent amount of cars but still at the limit, noel, thanks, john. >> the white house covid team is set to update the country on the rapid spread of the omicron variant later this morning. this follows the united states breaking its record for daily cases. jessi tenure has a preview from washington, dc. good morning. that record came just one day after the cdc cut in half the number of days infected americans should remain isolated.

>> and a member of the president's covid team is trying to clear up some confusion. >> to be sure and be safe. americans who test positive for covid-19 but don't have symptoms can now go back to work after 5 days at home. people with important. >> jobs in keeping society functioning may not be able to come to work if they're all out for a full 10 days. the new cdc guidance recommends wearing a mask religiously after leaving isolation. >> but does not require a negative test. the cdc felt that given the risk being very low. it's best to just get people to put a mask on and then go out and do what they need to do. doctor anthony fauci, the president's chief medical adviser also clarified that americans find within the u.s. will not have to be vaccinated for now. i think it's important to seriously consider it. i did not say it should be done. i did not say a favorite to be done. i just said it's up for

consideration. fauci said a vaccine mandate for domestic travel could come in a month or so, depending on the state of the surge. but we're not going there right now. >> white house officials have said a vaccine requirement on planes could trigger a host of logistical and legal concerns and republicans here on capitol hill have already vowed to push back. in washington. i'm jessi tenure. >> happening today. a restaurant in san francisco is taking an extra voluntary step to stop the spread of covid-19. it comes as the omicron variant poses a risk to staff and customers who are dining inside kron 4. sarah stinson joining us live in san francisco with details on that. good morning, sarah. >> and good well, starting today, if you want to go to zuni cafe on market street. you're going to have to show this look, you know, would your vaccination card budget must show proof that you have received your post or shot as well. this is an extra precaution that is unique. has

decided to put into place. and this is only for indoor dining. if you want to dine outdoors, which the weather is not really permitting that then you can't but indoors. you have to have that shot. this is not a san francisco wide requirement. san francisco still only requires you to get it to be fully vaccinated to dine indoors as unique as taking that extra step. you can see video of the restaurant that the signs on the front door that got a notice on their website telling customers that this is not the case. and zooming cafes actually not only restaurant doing this, there's at least 2 now that are taking this step further. the other is in the outer richmond neighborhood which ended up actually temporarily closing for the holidays due to the major rise in cases. the owner says closing in requiring booster shots. open. it's all an effort to keep everybody safe while the omicron variant continues to spread. let's hear now from foles restaurants about the decision to require boosters.

nearly 3 months after 10's of thousands of crude oil spilled off huntington beach. the cleanup is now over. officials say the coastline has been returns to its original condition. they oiled sand and debris are being disposed of in the special landfill designated for petroleum contaminated material more than 26,000 gallons of oil spilled into the water after an anchor from a cargo ship struck and ruptured an underwater pipeline.

are seeing a winter storm warning backup in effect in the sierra nevada through noontime today. another 8 to 20 inches of snowfall falling from in the upper elevations lake county, upper of elevations. also under a winter weather advisory snowpack in the sierra well above average for this time of year. up above a 166% of average in the central sierra now rainfall for the bay. area's tapered off snowfall still remains pretty heavy and portions of the sierra. so i would recommend against travel up there today. save it for tomorrow. going to be much calmer day thursday through sunday. is your window before storms again next week. now light showers across the north bay. not really lot to talk about the core of the bay area, some light showers from half moon bay up to pacifica san mateo across the bridge to hayward and then over towards pittsburgh. some moderate shower activity. a little pocket of rain fall fall over there. pretty dry in the santa clara valley at this moment. just a few isolated sprinkles one system after the next has been the way it's been the past week. but we are on the last system before this nice long break. a four-day break
