refocusing its attention now on how to move forward. eventually and live alongside the virus. our kron four's dan kerman live for us in san francisco tonight with more. dan, find some good news here. that's right, grant. vicki, we can tell you that the mayor says that light at the end of the tunnel is here, though. they say you do have to take protective measures for a few more weeks. >> and they say the way san francisco has responded to omicron will inform how we move forward with covid living among us. >> as san francisco enters the 3rd year of the covid-19 pandemic. finally, some good news. many of us are anxious to know when is this thing on a start dying down? well, the good news is things are starting to plateau at a news conference thursday, city leaders said cases peaked on january 9th been edging downward ever since. but they caution case numbers in transmission remain high and hospitalizations, which lag behind cases are still going up. i ask that we all hang in

taere for just a little bit longer. the surge is not over yet. well, the most transmissible variant yet omicron has proven to be mild, especially for those fully faxed and boosted as a result, hospitals have not been overwhelmed and colfax is that will set the stage for how san francisco deals with covid going forward. now, our goal is not to prevent every case of covid on the kron has proved that that's simply not possible. >> our goal >> is to prevent the worst outcomes. severe disease. hospitalizations and deaths and colfax as san francisco's health policy will reflect that by not a pending people's lives. we're not going to hold onto restrictions. and and, you know, just waiting for everything for omicron to go where covid to go away. that's not going to it's clear that that's not going to happen anymore. >> we overeat or of a place where covid is endemic and we're going to learn to live with this virus and are lifting of of of restrictions in a gradual way will reflect

that. that new reality. >> now, among those restrictions he was asked about was that indoor mask mandate, which san francisco partially lifted at one point only to put it back in place. he said obviously that is up for discussion. but again, we've got to get through this current surge. again, it is peak, but it's still coming down. it's got to get all the way down before they will be talking about lifting that live in san francisco. dan kerman kron. 4 news. thank you, dan. on the peninsula. san mateo county officials are admitting now that they're having issues with their covid testing. >> people are not getting results back in a timely manner. san mateo county public health conducting more than 10,000 tests per week. but officials say because of staffing shortages, the turnaround time for those test results are being affected. that results in many people just not knowing whether their covid positive or negative. san mateo officials say that they're currently working with the private testing companies to figure out a solution, not

clear when the turnaround time for those covid results are to ramp up. >> in the east bay concern over some masks is forcing the oakland unified school district to take action. they're trying to clear something up here. the district issuing a letter addressing concerns about kn 95 masks. the district saying the masks are appropriate for school. use. the issue is whether the masks can be used in medical settings. in august of 2020, the fda issued an umbrella emergency use authorization for kn 95 masks to be used because at that time there was a shortage of and 95 masks. but the fda recently updated that guidance saying that the kn 95, sir, no longer authorize in medical settings since suppliers for n 95 masks are now able to keep up with demand. and there are plenty of n 95. this has led to some confusion and some concern thinking that maybe they can. 95 sarin, okay for school. but now that that

clarification exists, district officials are emphasizing that can 95 masks are safe and they give more protection to people. then do surgical or cloth masks. >> one man is dead tonight after an officer-involved shooting at san francisco international airport. the 911 call came in to police just before 7.30, this morning. the shooting happened inside the international terminal near the airport's reflection room kron four's rob nesbitt reports now on the active investigation and what airport officials are saying tonight. >> this is where international departures get dropped off at sfo. there have been police cruisers and tactical team units in this area all throughout the day trying to figure out why a man came to the airport armed and ready to shoot. >> a high level of security at sfo was one thing. but crime scene tape caught people off-guard monday. kerry. behind these barriers in the airport's international terminal is where san francisco police say officers opened fire on a gunman after

he advanced towards police armed with 2 handguns responding. officers were rendered aid to the man and some in medics to the scene. the man succumb to his injuries and was pronounced deceased. sfo spokesperson doug yakel says the incident happened near the bart station entrance while others were around person experiencing homelessness who is nearby whose leg was injured by a ricochet that individuals transported to a nearby hospital and is expected to recover. >> bart service to the airport was temporarily suspended and passengers were routed around the affected area. there was no impact air travel operations. officer grace get and then says the shooting was not a quick incident and that officers attempted to de-escalate the situation before opening fire. police are still investigating why the gunman was at the airport in the first place on occasion of this incident being involves terrorism. >> like the individual came to commit some type of act of terrorism. contained in this particular about the gunman was discovered after a tsa agent noticed him acting suspiciously. bickal says that's exactly why airports

make announcements for everyone to be aware of their surroundings. is that idea of if you see something, say something? if you see suspicious behavior. >> report that suspicious behavior. and that's exactly what we had happen here today. san francisco police will be having a public town hall within the next 10 days to answer any questions about the officer involved shooting as part of their commitment to transparency. >> at sfo, i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news. >> thank you, rob. in the south bay, san jose police shot and killed a suspected carjacker. this happened last night in the area of heading street and park avenue. authorities say the man was driving a stolen car and tried carjacking someone in santa clara, the suspect who was allegedly armed with a gun was not able to take the car. he was trying to carjack. officers say he drove the original stolen car back to san jose where he then caused a major accident at the intersection and injured other drivers. when police they arrived. they say that suspect started shooting at officers. the suspect was hit at least

once by police gunfire and then was taken to a hospital where he died. the police officers involved were not injured. the second day in a row, search efforts continued in fremont for a 27 year-old stanford nurse. >> who friends say has been missing since early tuesday morning. traveling nurse michael o'dell was reported missing by his roommate after he didn't come home from his night shift at stanford hospital in palo alto, according to his deals phones last location, pings through the find my friends app that was found tuesday at 08:00am near the dunbarton bridge toll plaza in fremont heading east. well, chp, how later dale's car at that location. the coast guard was out on the water searching for odell yesterday. anyone with information dell's location is being asked to contact chp hayward. >> the forty-niners are on their way to wisconsin getting ready to take on the green bay packers. of course this weekend you see the team they're getting on the bus at

still significant for the bay area. san francisco in san jose were down about a 5th from this time last year in terms of active listings. this dropping availability paired with continued high demand from buyers is leaving home prices to steadily rise. >> in both the san francisco and san jose metro areas. zillow, senior economist jeff tucker says. >> typical home values have increased more than 17% over last year and get inventory remains well below. pre-pandemic levels reported in december 2019, there's may be a myth of sort of a >> an infinite number of people moving out with a lot of money to spend buying homes in other parts of the country. so you might think that therefore there should be a glut of homes left behind, you know, in the bay area or that the demand of the lower prices might be falling in the bay area. but if in late 2020 on the market is hitting back up
