nfl legend in san mateo native tom brady. what is dead is telling kron 4 tonight about his playing days. that is where we begin this saturday night here on kron. 4 news at 8 o'clock welcome. and i'm jonathan mccall. justine enjoying the night off today, news broke that the 7 time super bowl champ was getting ready to hang up his cleats. but he's dead tells kron 4, not so fast. all of that happening just 24 hours before the san francisco forty-niners are set to play for a trip to the super bowl kron. 4 has live team sports coverage for you this saturday night. kate rooney live for us is so 5 stadium in la with a preview of tomorrow's big nfc championship game between the niners and rams. but we start with kylen mills in the newsroom with the story that everyone is talking about. the future of tom brady and trying to figure out what is what kyle. >> hey, jonathan, it is been a wild day. several nfl insiders reported that tom brady is set to retire after 22 seasons and a firestorm ensued on social media. however, tom brady

senior told us that those reports are untrue. he said his son has not made a decision. our own sports producer kevin cider called brady senior who says this is all an unsubstantiated rumor that was circulated by an online publication. several to reporters have tweeted that bucs gm jason light says that brady called him today and said he hasn't made up his mind yet. it's also being reported that head coach first aerion said brady told him the same thing. meanwhile, a number of players across the league have been tweeting their congratulations to brady fans have been a frenzy and the brady camp has been silent. we will keep you updated on any new developments. all right, kyle and thank you. meanwhile, the forty-niners resting up in la tonight. >> to get ready for tomorrow's big nfc championship game against the rams. it's real simple win. >> go to the super bowl. lose. come on back home. we're live in la tonight. that's where we find kron four's kate rooney with a look at how things are going in. getting us ready for

the team and what the vibe is like for everyone for the niners fans who have invaded l a >> hey, jonathan, will the forty-niners themselves are off today? no practice for them. so they're just getting locked and loaded for tomorrow's game. but for the fans who have invaded la, like you said for this event today was almost as good as the big thing. the team hosted an la invasion at tom's watch bar at la live in downtown l a and to their name. the faithful showed up the lines that wrapped around the block. we're probably the equivalent of several blocks of people at the end of those lines, unlikely to get into the bar today. here's what they got. if they did get in some photo ops with former forty-niners players a little bit of free swag and most importantly, a chance to hang out with hundreds of other forty-niners fans who are in town for the game. i met people who lived just a couple blocks away and then also people who traveled pretty far from san jose and sacramento. that's to be expected. but also iowa, new

and the union representing its teachers have reached a new deal on a contract under that deal. teachers and educators would receive 2 one-time bonuses of $2000. one would come in june. the second in november, both this year, the move would also increase daily rates for substitute teachers. officials say this new deal will help with recruiting and retaining educators during staffing shortages at schools. the last deal between both sides expired all the way back in 2020. so they have not been working without a contract since then. this current deal with run through june 2023, the deal must still be voted on and approved by the teachers union and the san francisco school board. the lunar new year kicks off on tuesday, but already celebrations are under way to usher in the year of the tiger, including this one happening in san jose today. kron four's gayle ong has a look at the celebrations already underway across the bay area. >> i and dan's welcoming the

welcome back, everyone. the covid-19 pandemic has now sparked the so-called great resignation. americans are quitting their jobs in record numbers in search of jobs with better benefits for some even new careers. >> for many older workers, they're leaving the job market for good kron. 4 washington correspondent alexandra limon shows us the impact. it's now have. >> good evening. since the start of the pandemic, americans are quitting their jobs in record numbers and that's impacting the economy and the labor market in various ways. well, labor force participation has edged up. it remains subdued in part, reflecting the aging of the population and retirements. susan weinstock says aarp conducted a survey of americans 50 and older of those who had retired. 21 1% of them said that they were tired earlier. they had planned because of the pandemic. one stocks as those newly retired say they left their jobs for a variety of reasons, including concerns

about being exposed to covid-19. many of those older americans say they won't return to the workforce because their retirements are permanent. aarp says those that have returned are going back to the same jobs they had before. a 3rd of them have found better 25% said the number of job. the job had the number of hours that they wanted to work and about a quarter of them also said that the, you know, offered more flexibility like work from home while the great resignation poses challenges for employers, it's also providing greater benefits for workers with constraints on labor supply. employers are having difficulties filling job openings. >> and wages are rising at their fastest pace in many years. >> aarp survey also found that those who did return to work reported finding jobs. there are more passionate about in washington. alexandra limon. >> the federal aviation administration says it is now allowing more 5 g towers to be activated near airport runways. airlines were initially concerned that the 5

g signal with threatened flight safety by interfering with equipment used to land planes and low visibility. the faa says their concerns have now been east after wireless companies provided new more precise data about the location of 5 g transmitters so far, verizon and atnt have yet to comment on the new u.s. changes. first lady jill biden along with volunteers, spent the saturday putting together care packages for thousands of national guard members across america. officials with the group operation. gratitude say it is a show of appreciation for the men and women working in missions related to covid-19 and natural disasters. president joe biden also stopping by talking about how his late son beau, who also served in the national guard, appreciated those care packages while he was on deployment in iraq. whether time right now a live look at the golden gate bridge on this saturday night. folks getting ready for the big afc championship game on sunday. let's get you ready for the

forecast as well. it's going for meteorologist mabrisa rodriguez. >> yeah, that's right, jonathan. and hopefully the luck of the tiger is with our forty-niners lit up in red and gold this evening. not only just for chinese new year, but also for the night. 49 ers game as well tomorrow as they take on the rams. so best of luck to our niners. i nor 9 news getting extremely excited for tomorrow's game. tonight, though, we are going to notice hazy sky. that's going to continue through tomorrow. moderate air particles through monday. so it is going to be hazy for the next couple of days. but this storm coming up on monday, actually going to help clear out the air because of gusty winds that will form in its place. not going to be a rainmaker. unfortunately, we certainly needed during this wet season, but we are going to see windy conditions, cooler cloudier weather in its place. and let's take a look at just how windy it's going to get right now. fairly calm, a little breezy for downtown san francisco around 17 miles

per hour. sustained winds with gusts upwards of 20 miles per hour or less. that trend going to continue for the 2nd half of your weekend as well. future wind gusts, though, on monday as that weak storm passes, going to be more of a wind maker. and here's why we're going to track winds along the coast, north bay and east bay valleys, gusting as high as 45 miles per hour or less. so far, the national weather service holding back on issuing any wind advisories. and if we do see the gusty east winds, they're mainly going to be in the highest peaks in the north bay mountains and east bay hills, but also fairly gusty for those of you in half moon bay, right along the san francisco peninsula coastline. so just a heads up there. radar for though, from now tracking very dry, clear conditions. temperatures for the most part, widespread 40's and 50's right now. we are tracking 53 degrees for san jose about 10 degrees warmer than napa in the mid 40's out there right now at 44 degrees and overnight lows. subfreezing temperatures for those of you in santa rosa. so bundle up

there. 33 degrees, but 10 degrees warmer for downtown san francisco. cooling down into the mid 40's. but seasonable weather upper 50's to low 60's for downtown san francisco and oakland. a few degrees above average for san jose and santa rosa warming up into the mid 60's for the 2nd half of the weekend. cooling trend through midweek. but a lot of sunshine out there. so going to remain dry as we end january and start february. back to you. jonathan. >> thank you. tonight, a 29 year-old woman is dead after chp says that she fell out of a party bus that she was a passenger in and he was hit by a car. it happened early this morning on highway one. 0, one in los angeles. so far the woman's name has not been released and it's unknown how she fell out of that party bus. investigators trying to figure out of drugs or alcohol were involved in the incident ahead of this year's super bowl. several groups in southern california are now raising awareness about the dangers of human trafficking for 13 years. the national nonprofit in our backyard has

pandemic now forcing some members of the national guard into a new assignment. the classroom as schools struggle with staffing shortages. it's part of a new effort to keep kids in class instead of learning remotely madison. all worth has the details. >> with staff shortages persisting in classrooms, volunteers and even the national guard are being asked to step in to fill in for teachers, disruptions to learning like this are definitely not good. it keeps the classroom open. but at what cost president biden is touting how 95% of public schools are now fully open. but many are relying on those volunteers and under qualified substitutes in new mexico. the governor is calling on the national guard to volunteer to become licensed substitute teachers as schools struggle to stay open since winter break. approximately 60 school districts and charter schools have needed to move to temporary remote learning because of staff shortages in hamburg central school district in new york. staff has worked hard to hit their

goal of keeping schools open all 100, 80 days to do so. administrators have filled in for principles. retired teachers are being paid to work on a day-to-day basis and college seniors that are studying education have been hired as substitutes. all of this to keep schools open. but the stopgap measures are not problem. free. >> we have teachers in the classroom for multiple reasons. first of all, because the subject matter experts so having individuals and in the classroom who have other duties, responsibilities outside of working with you know, during the some of the difficult times, it says it doesn't help learning. >> these efforts are preventing kids from being forced into virtual learning. so while the measures are not perfect, it is doing an important job. the effects of virtual and disrupt and learning are still being understood. take a look at this for the first time in nearly 2 decades, graduation rates dropped in at least 20

bay, small business. 2 men broke into diablo crossfit. >> you can see them in this video late friday night. they spent about a half hour going through the entire gym. one of the coaches noticed early saturday morning he had found the mom are our jim, especially in disarray. you could tell immediately that someone had broken in the coach contacted owner craig howard. he checked the security video and can see it all go down. 2 men looking around and then stuffing items into a back. they broke into a back window in this video. you can see one of the men noticed a security camera and cover his face. well, most of the gym equipment is too heavy or large to move. the suspects went after electronics. we moved a lot of our business online and to be online. you have to have camera equipment. you have lighting. >> we have sound we have a mixture boards for podcast. they took about $5,000 worth

of stuff. howard reached out to pleasant hill. police. >> they told him they were in the area last night about 15 minutes after they believe the suspects left. police say the suspects may have triggered an alarm at a neighboring building. police told howard the suspects may have been strategic with their timing. big parks in pleasant hill that night the about the same time. and they said they monitor that. they know the police will be distracted. howard says in the last month. >> they've had reports of people seen around the building. after hours, police told in these situations are becoming more common. but they say the suspects usually don't come back. >> because many home or business owners fortify their space after a break in for our members all say we're probably safer now than we were prior to this. howard tells me they've been located in that building for 13 years. >> in that time, this is the second break-in. amanda hari kron. 4 new at 8 tonight.

oakland police say they are investigating 4 shootings that happened overnight. >> the first happened around 8 o'clock friday night near 4th and foothill avenue. officers say they found a person shot at the scene. the victim now recovering in stable condition. the second shooting happened an hour later at 57th and international boulevard. officers say the victim drove themselves to the hospital. also listed in stable condition. the 3rd happened around 11. 30 police say that one happened near 98th in be street. officers say they were notified after that victim showed up at the hospital and at midnight, officers were called to a home near 30th and san pablo avenue for another shooting. the victim was found with several gunshot wounds. medics took them to the hospital in stable condition. so far investigators have not released any details on the suspect. anyone with information on one or all of the shootings now urged to call oakland police. but you should. police meanwhile, are investigating what it is calling a murder suicide. 2 people were found dead at a

home near east e around noon. detectives say when they got to the scene, they say they found 2 people dead inside of a residence from gunshot wounds. detectives say this is still an ongoing investigation so far police have not released any names. stay with kron 4 for more information as soon as it becomes available. tonight, palo alto police say they need your help trying to find a man who they say committed a lewd act inside of a grocery store. police say wednesday morning a woman reported a man who was inappropriately touching himself as she stood behind him or see stood behind her in the scheck checkout line at the safeway on middlefield road. police say the suspect as a black man in his 20's or 30's standing 6 feet tall, weighing around 210 pounds. he was seen wearing a black face mask and a black baseball hat. police say the suspect even got into an argument with a man who witnessed the entire incident officers say after that, the man took off in a white van. anyone with

worried about above average temperatures in the coming days, a mix of sun and clouds for the 2nd half of your weekend, truckee and even south warming up into the mid to upper 40's. 48 degrees for south lake tahoe. little change on monday. but take a look at this rapid drop in temperatures. a storm is going to try to sweep through this year on tuesday. going to be more of a wind maker than rain or snow maker. so dropping temperatures in the low 30's. the good news with that is that is going to temporarily help with that rapid snow melt in this year. so fingers crossed. we get some rain and snow showers throughout the bay area and sierra at least the 2nd half of february looking dry from now. until then, back to you. jonathan risa, thank you. >> tonight, millions of folks in the northeast find themselves in the path of a powerful winter storm that is dumping inches of snow and causing large scale power outages. massachusetts alone expected to receive nearly 2 feet of snow. more than 100,000 homes and businesses currently in the dark,

virginia, new jersey, new york, maryland and delaware have all issued states of emergencies because of this bomb cyclone and more than 4,000 flights have been canceled as state leaders warn of high winds combined with snow which are expected to create whiteout conditions. meanwhile, new jersey and parts of new york were in the bull's eye of that storm. the folks did make it very far today when they left their homes. james ford brings us the story. >> a blizzard is a severe snowstorm and this is what that that's an ambulance. they got stranded in a roadside snowdrift. it was by no means the only service vehicle with troubles. that's a parking lot plow truck that was disabled by the deep snow. by definition of blizzard has strong sustained winds of 35 miles an hour or more. that means the snow blow so strongly that it's hard to see

north bay. tonight, sonoma county providing extra covid-19 vaccine clinics to make sure folks can get the vaccine. that clinic will be held for the next 4 weekends at the sonoma county event center fairgrounds in santa rosa. that clinic set to run from 9 in the morning until 4 in the afternoon and is open to eligible residents until february. 20th, we're told the clinic can provide as many as 500 vaccines every day. the county says they are still encouraging more parents to get their kids vaccinated. to

new york nurses are now charged with forging covid-19 vaccination cards. get this. investigators say the duo raked in nearly 2 million dollars on the scam. detectives say the pair charged adults $220 in kids. 85 bucks for those fake vaccination cards. investigators say the nurses injured false information into the state's immunization database. officials say the 3 months scheme unraveled when an undercover detective received a forged card showing that a vaccine was given but never administered. sports is on the way. and the warriors host, the controversial kyree irving in brooklyn nets. but it was clay who shined bright at the end. kylen mills has the highlights. plus, we check back in with kate rooney getting us ready for the niners and rams afc championship game on the way.

of you in downtown san francisco and oakland, low 60's, when you should also be in the upper 50's. but the good news is a cool down. going to feel more season along the coastline of the bay area and east bay shoreline cooling down temperatures to write about where we should be. all we're really missing is the rain. in fact, great shot out there. very clear conditions. the golden gate bridge, but future cast for going to show the return of dense low clouds and fog is going to be more widespread tomorrow. then it was this morning. slow lifting and clearing because as you can see by midmorning, especially around the bay area shoreline, we're going to see visibility at or near 0 for some parts of the bay area, including downtown san francisco. but it is it really until our new lunchtime hour that we finally start to notice that lifting from that low cloud deck. but radar for tracking very dry, clear conditions out there right now. but temperatures for the most part starting to cool down mid 40's for 43 degrees. 10 degrees warmer for downtown san francisco up. 52

quarterback in san mateo native tom brady is retiring. however, kron 4 spoke to his dad and learned that may not be the case at all. our own sports producer kevin cider called tom brady senior who says the reports are untrue. he says his son has not made a decision. this is on unsubstantiated rumor that was circulated by an online publication. several team reporters have tweeted that fox gm jason light says that brady called him today and said he hasn't made up his mind yet. head coach bruce arians said the same thing. meanwhile, a number of players across the league have been tweeting their congratulations to brady fans have been in a frenzy and the brady camps has been silent. we'll keep you updated on any new developments on this story in bay area sports. the forty-niners are in la preparing to take on the rams in the nfc championship tomorrow. the faithful also in la ready to cheer the team on to victory for sports reporter kate rooney joins us live now at so fi stadium. so, kate, you're at some fan parties today. how rowdy was it?

>> well, fans were getting pretty excited for tomorrow's game kyle. and that's what i can tell you. as the forty-niners rested up and got locked and loaded for tomorrow's game, the faithful really started to descend on la. and so i wanted to chat with some of them to get their take on what they expect on the field tomorrow at this team event and la live the la invasion. they called it a tom's watch bar. there were hundreds of fans at the bar and they chatted with. i talked with several of them, heard a lot of recurring themes when it comes to the >> x's and o's. the fans really want the forty-niners to stick with what works. run the ball aggressively play fast and physical defense. so whese fans. yeah. i think they might know what they're talking about because i also talked with former forty-niners quarterback eric davis and he said that's pretty much the winning formula. >> just play the way that they've been playing. i didn't do anything special football's about matchups and and
