desk. topping our news right now. in just a few hours 68 san jose police officers will turn in their badges. ktvu's claudine wong joins us now from police headquarters to tell us that these layoffs come during a very violent year in san jose. good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning, pam. certainly this is going to be a difficult morning for the officers here at the san jose police department as they watch 68 of their own turn in their badges for the last time. now an emotional day, a sad day but certainly very frustrating day. the union president saying this didn't have to happen. obviously there's an ongoing budget crisis and the mayor has said these budget gaps need to be filled. the union president in a letter to the san jose mercury news today blames city leadership for this. he says that officers did what they could by agreeing to a new contract to save hundreds of jobs. but when he says the city leaders did not do what they could. he says they did not take the opportunity to take advantage of grant money. and they didn't take an

opportunity to put ballot measure reform on the ballot. so certainly they're not happy about what's going on this morning and saying when you consider that san jose's homicide rate is on pace to pass a 30 year high he maintains the city can no longer proactively protect its citizens. a lot of upset feelings out here. again, at 8:00 this morning we are expecting these officers to come here to the san jose police department to turn in their badges. not sure what the future holds for many of these officers. obviously a lot of other departments are also financing their own layoffs. a difficult time. we'll continue to follow this situation. continue to get reaction and continue to keep you updated here on the morning news. live in san jose, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. santa rosa police have arrested a man suspected of killing a former sonoma county corrections officer. the shooting happened tuesday night just after midnight near third street ail work pub. 36-year-old jack was killed. police have arrested a 29-year-

old and his girlfriend who they believe was an accessory. investigators say a motive in the shooting remains unclear, but the two men knew each other and had disagreements in the past. your time 5:01. more police officers will soon be patrolling the streets of oakland in the highest crime area. the police department will expand force in east oakland responding to a surge in homicides. at the same time oakland has that big budget crisis. however police officials say they can still increase patrols with efficient use with the officers already on the force. tonight the oakland city council will try once again to pass a new city budget just a couple hours before the new fiscal year begins. tonight's meeting is a follow up to the meeting on tuesday. that's when council members debated three different budget plans. they couldn't agree on which one to pass. the deadline to pass a budget is midnight tonight. today is defense secretary robert gates' last day on the job. president obama will speak at a tribute to gates this morning

at the pentagon. and coming up at 5:15 we're going to have a live report from our washington d.c. newsroom with the send off plan for gates this morning at the pentagon. time now 5:02. an east bay teenager who was buried alive in sand at a santa cruz beach remains in critical condition this morning. however 17-year-old ryan buchanan's family has some hopeful news. ryan's doctors have weaned him off the drug that is kept him sedated and he is now functioning on his own. last saturday the teenager became trapped beneath seven feet of sand after a sand cave that he and his friends were building collapsed. prayer vigils for him continue every night at his church in alamo. prisoners at california's notorious pelican bay state prison are planning to stage a hunger strike tomorrow. inmates say they are protesting what they call inhumane conditions at the prison in crescent city. their supporters will reveal more about tomorrow's hunger strike during a news conference

in downtown oakland later this morning. pelican bay houses some of california's most dangerous inmates. time now 5:03. this morning an investigation continues into a deadly house fire in el cerrito. a 98-year-old woman from el salvador was killed. the fire started yesterday evening on king drive in the hills above el cerrito. now neighbors took this video you're looking at. they shot this with amateur video. still no official word on what caused this fire. but investigators are checking into the possibility it may have started from candles tipping over at a shrine inside of a closet. >> she's religious. they're from el salvador she is originally. she used to light candles and pray in her room. >> now the victim's 50-year-old son suffered minor injuries trying to save his mother. his 10-year-old daughter was not hurt. well, the united airlines flight that took off from san francisco made an emergency

landing in nebraska. united flight 788 headed to boston when the crews saw a possible fuel leak. the pilot landed the plane safely in omaha, nebraska, last night. one of the passengers says taking off from san francisco was delayed three hours for mechanical issues. >> i think people mostly reacted decently because i think people were already frustrated and already accepted that we were going to be really late. so it was just like all right this is the latest in a bad day of traveling. >> now 181 passengers on board were put on a replacement plane that took them onto massachusetts. the plane with the reported fuel leak is now being inspected. fewer californians are planning to hit the road during the 4th of july holiday weekend. triple a says about 3.6 million californians plan to drive at least 50 miles, but that's about 2% fewer compared to last year. air travel is expected to slightly increase. triple a says high gas prices and the economy are some of the

northwest. that will kind of hold the high in check a little bit. but high pressure is nosing in. it will flex its muscle. it's been drinking its protein shakes. it will be in here more likely on friday and then kick in on the holiday weekend and temperatures inland far inland will be in the upper 90s to near 100. coast looks like they'll stay in the 60s and 70s. water temps continue to be pretty cool. without an offshore wind fog nights and mornings but shallow marine layer into the weekend. fog, warmer, sunshine. low to mid-80s inland. temperatures recovering from the incredibly cool readings last couple of days. all signs point towards sunshine and warmer weather. there will be patchy fog on the coast but majority sunny and warm to hot. all right, steve. time now 5:08. the marin county fair starts today. the 2011 edition kicks off the 71st anniversary celebration of the golden gate bridge. it's going to feature a toothpick sculpture of the bridge and fascinating designs

good morning to you. welcome back. a 98-year-old woman killed in a house fire is being investigated this morning. kraig debro is here to tell us what was found inside the house that may have caused that deadly fire. kraig. >> reporter: good morning, dave. candles. fire investigators right now think this is an accidental fire. moas sure and king is about half a mile east of san pablo. i found this in the front yard of the home. you can look on the trigger that black tie is still there. looks like the fire extinguisher wasn't used. here's the home behind me. if you look around the home there are a lot of trees there.

this has a potential of spread. fire was called in yesterday around 6:30. according to the fire chief when crews first got here they found the home basically fully engulfed in flames. people live in the neighborhood told us they believe it started in the back of the house. by the time the fire department got here basically the whole house was engulfed with flames. fire department said they had a little bit of trouble because there are these huge power lines right next to the home so they could only go on the other side of the home. that was one problem. the second problem was getting to the person that they knew was in the back of the home. >> during fire attack they had one downed power line which impeded a little bit of egress you can see to the far side would be the south side of the house it impeded the egress and access to the house. they made access up through there. with multiple lines on the fire, very aggressive fire attack. based on the fact they were told someone was in the house. >> i know she was in her 90s almost 100. that's about it. and they said she liked to light candles in her room.

that could be a possibility but i'm not sure. >> reporter: the person who died in the fire is identified only as a 98-year-old woman. she lived in this home with her son who was 50. he went to the hospital to be treated for minor burns. also 11-year-old girl in the home, his daughter, she was uninjured in this fire. again, the fire chief told us he believes that this fire may have been started by candles possibly in a back closet. we're going to try to see if we can talk to him this morning although he is staying at another location because the house is unlivable. live in el cerrito, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. defense secretary robert gates retires today after nearly five years on the job. ktvu's allison burns joins us now from our washington d.c. newsroom with the sendoff planned at the pentagon this morning. allison. >> reporter: good morning, pam. that's right. in just a few hours the analysts here in d.c. call the best defense secretary in u.s. history will retire.

it's been an emotional farewell for him. >> i just want to come out here and thank you for the last time for your service and for your sacrifice. >> reporter: robert gates visited troops in afghanistan just a few weeks ago. today he sent a message to every u.s. service member and d.o.d. worker around the world telling them it's been the honor of his life to serve with them and lead them. there will be a formal farewell ceremony outside the pentagon this morning with a full 19 gun salute. secretary gates, joint chiefs chairman and president obama will speak. even though he is widely revered, secretary gates is leaving behind some unfinished business that has at least one group of service members pretty upset. i'll have more on that for you during my next update in about an hour. for now live in washington d.c., allison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 5:15. well, today lawmakers in greece are about to pass a bill that will detail controversial and very unpopular spending cuts.

just look at this. there have been violent clashes between demonstrators and police in athens the last two days. yesterday the parliament passed a measure authorizing very steep spending cuts as well as tax hikes. the european union required that measure in order for greece to qualify for a bailout loan to keep that country from going bankrupt. just about an hour ago the german parliament approved a government's plan to shut down all nuclear power plants in germany by 2022. the german government announced an about face on its support for nuclear power after that crisis at a nuclear plant in japan triggered by the earthquake and tsunami in march. only last year the government announced plans to extend the life span of germany's 17 nuclear reactors. well, there are now radiation monitors keeping an eye on the los alamos nuclear laboratory in new mexico as a wild fire near the site continues to grow. the government says the radiation monitors are just a

precaution, but thousands of scientific experiments are now on hold. that fire burning near the lab has grown to 125 square miles, 13 homes have been lost so far and three others were damaged. time now 5:16. copper thieves looking to cash in are ripping off facebook's future home in men lo park. police say someone stole more than 1,000 pounds of copper wiring from inside a vacant building there on constitution avenue. investigators think it happened some time between june 17th and june 20th. the thieves came back, they targeted another building on june 22nd. by the way that stolen copper is worth about $8500. pg&e will conduct high pressure water tests on its natural gas pipelines in men lo park and woodside. testing is scheduled to begin next week. service to customers will not be effected. pg&e has agreed to check the safety of its pipelines in the wake of the san bruno explosion in september that killed eight people and destroyed 38 homes.

time now 5:17. well, today the federal government's expected to announce financial backing for three new california solar energy projects. the energy department is expected to say it will guarantee more than $4 billion in loans. these projects are in san louis abyss pro, los angeles and riverside counties. a national safety group has released annual list of the beaches to avoid this 4th of july weekend. state of california is right in the middle of the pack on america's dirty beach list. it ranked 22nd. but there's not a single bay area beach on the list this year. most of the dirty beaches are in southern california. nationwide there was a big increase in polluted beaches due in part to the gulf of mexico oil spill. >> yeah. all right. time now 5:18. hey, sal, any roads we need to stay away from this morning? well, one of the things -- it's one of those things where we've been listening to some police activity on the bay bridge but now we're getting

word that whatever was going on there is under control and all the lanes are open. so that's good news. but you know we follow everything here. if you see a bunch of police officers on the bridge, apparently something was going down at the bay bridge and on the span, but fortunately seems as if everything's under control. i did see a lot of lights. listening to the radios. and now -- again, we're going to follow it for you. it's one of those things where you hear a lot and then now it seems like everything's okay. so let's just move on. this is a look at interstate 880. traffic is moving along fine in both directions here at the 880 offramp at haggenberger. this morning's commute on northbound and southbound 101 that traffic is looking good. at 5:19 let's go to steve. thank you, sal. we do have our system that's moved out and it's left behind some low clouds. they won't last very long. so sunshine today. temperatures coming up little cool for some. few upper 40s especially

towards the north bay noticed a few there. mainly around 50 to 56. some low clouds, fog, then sun. and that fog bank will be getting shallower as high pressure builds in. should be sunny for everybody by noon. 58 to 75. and we'll have warmer weather today. 60 to 84 degrees still a little bit of a component of an on shore wind. low 50s here. redwood city in there. 51. 50 napa. 52 san rafael. also santa rosa. and mid-50s everywhere else. temperatures are really close coast, bay and inland. little ripple in the jet stream right there that will kind of keep us from warming up too much. just the mere fact that high pressure's nosing in slightly gives us a warmer pattern. now i think it will really show itself tomorrow and take us right into the weekend and all the way into the 4th. so lots of sunshine and little breezy at times but that will be closer to the coast and bay i think that west wind still there even though it's really calmed down considerably. 60s for some. 70s and inland find low to mid- 80s. temperatures rebounding from the very, very cool numbers that we had over the past 48

hours. warmer weather, sunshine and warm to hot especially inland as we head into the 4th. right now european markets are mixed this morning as investors wait for the final vote on greece's new austerity program. overnight all the major asian markets finished the trading day with gains. south korea and japan up fractionally and the shanghai index closed up more than 1% with investors believing the news from europe will mean continuing demand for chinese goods. checking in on our numbers this morning. looks like a bit of a mixed opening as well. pretty good gains yesterday after that news dow jones up about 72 points and starts today at 12,261. goldman sacks says it could layoff 230 workers before next spring. the investment firm notified the new york state department of labor about the possible layoffs. goldman executives would only say the job cuts are because of the weak economy.

wow. time now 5:21. why the planes couldn't take off at one of the nation's busiest airports. very unusual delay that had nothing to do with the weather. plus the shocking video from an iowa farm that's leading to changes at a locally based supermarket chain. good morning. westbound bay -- i'm sorry westbound highway 4 looks pretty good. so does the westbound bay bridge by the way. tell you more about the morning commute and where it is beginning to get slow.

good morning. patchy low clouds around. once that burns off it will be sunny, cool but still warmer by the coast and bay. 60s 70s, inland jump up about ten degrees for some low to mid- 80s. shark fin soup will soon be a thing of the past. the possession of shark fins was banned last year and restaurants were given one year to use up that supply. that deadline is tomorrow. restaurants that serve shark fin soup after the deadline will be fined at least $5,000. our time is now 5:25. safeway no longer buying pork from an iowa farm after the release of some undercover video. i've got to warn you the images are graphic. the animal rights group mercy for animals recorded this video you're looking at iowa select farms. you can see workers tossing and kicking pig lets and pregnant pigs living inside of crates that are so small they can

barely turn around. mercy for animals released video to put pressure on costco, safeway and other stores to stop buying pork from farms like this one. >> in a civilized society it's our moral obligation to help prevent cruelty to all animals including mother pigs from needless cruelty and violence. >> safeway released a statement they said "safeway does not tolerate animal abuse of any kind. it finds the images and animal handling practices contained in the mercy for animals video in violation of our animal welfare policies ." now our channel 2 website, ktvu.com, has much more information about the group that created that video. there's also a link to the entire video, but i have to advise you, it is graphic. just look under the right now section at ktvu.com. well, air traffic is back to normal at new york's jfk airport this morning. but that's after a delay because of turtles. yep. turtles.

more than 150 crossed a runway yesterday to reach an ideal spot for laying eggs. flights were disrupted for about two hours. it's not surprising though to see turtles at the airport considering it's surrounded by a bay and wetlands. similar incident happened in 2009. well, a little less sparkle on the 4th of july celebration. the reason one local city is canceling its fireworks show for a second year. but also not all is lost. the potential new clue in the disappearance of michelle le that's taken the investigation out of state. and the extra cash certain drivers will need to cross bay area bridges starting tomorrow. good morning. northbound 280 traffic is moving along well, but we're hearing of some police activity on westbound bay bridge. tell you more coming up.

bay bridge traffic is okay. looks like it's moving along very nicely coming into san francisco you may see some police activity near treasure island, but it's so far not causing a big delay to traffic. also the morning commute is looking good on interstate 880 here in oakland. at 5:30 let's go back to the desk. well, there is an intriguing new clue this morning in the disappearance of michelle le. ktvu channel 2 reporter jade hernandez joins us now from hayward with more on what investigators uncovered. jade. >> reporter: that's right. it's been more than a month since michelle le disappeared. no arrests have been made and no significant leads have surfaced until it seems now. we're live at hayward police headquarters this morning. we're learning this investigation may have led detectives out of state. it's reported a source close to this case that someone made several phone calls from le's cell phone after she disappeared. the source said one call came from a reno, nevada, phone and another somewhere in arizona.

hayward police have reportedly traveled to arizona to speak to a woman there, a woman who then called le's family. the news report comes out of a san diego television station. le is a san diego native. the family's spokeswoman sent out an e-mail late last night disputing the source saying hayward police and the family have not acknowledged the facts. michelle's brother, michael, is quoted in this news story but the spokeswoman for the family says the quote mentioned only says michael received a phone call and passed it along to police. not that the call had any significance to the case. the family contends they will do everything they can to bring le home. the family plans to head up another search for the 26-year- old next weekend. a $65,000 reward is being offered for nor information that might lead to le. police are still investigating this case as a homicide. we've left messages for the family and for police and we'll bring you any update we receive in this case. reporting live from hayward this morning, jade hernandez,

ktvu channel 2 news. the city of alameda has tapped a retired state fire marshal to review the memorial day drowning. he has a website offering public safety consulting services. he will issue a report on the ineffective response that led to the death of a suicidal man. alameda's fire chief says crews did not go into the water because they are not properly trained in water rescues due to budget cuts. time now 5:33. there was a deadly house fire in the hills above el cerrito. it started last night on king drive. ktvu's kraig debro is there now with more on a 98-year-old woman who did not survive this. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning, dave. yesterday this all happened and when the fire department got here they had a couple problems. one, see that giant transmission tower? they had to be concerned about that. they had to be concerned about the power pole, power lines coming from that. and according to one neighbor looked as though to her

firefighters had problems getting water to this fire. that was just a couple of the problems crews had fighting the fire. the woman who took this cell phone video said it seemed like crews had trouble getting water to this fire. two alarm fire reported around 6:30 yesterday. three people live in the home. an elderly 98-year-old woman from el salvador died here during the fire. her 50-year-old son suffered minor injuries and his 11-year- old daughter was not injured. firefighters say the man went back in to try to see if he could save his mother and that's how he was injured. firefighters say a downed power line on the side of the house actually delayed their attack on the fire, but it's not known if that delay had any effect on the fatality. >> the fire was already in front of the house and all the rooms are in the back. so if it started in the woman's room, there was no chance of any survival by the time we seen it. once i got here there was no fire department here yet. kind of no hope. >> reporter: the fire did not spread to any other homes on this street about a quarter mile east of san pablo.

fire chief maple says a candle may have started the fire. neighbors told channel 2 yesterday a woman who died in the fire converted a closet into a religious shrine. they believe the fire started back there. we're going to try to talk to neighbors this morning about what they saw out here yesterday. reporting live in el cerrito, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. well, amazon is already striking back against california's new law requiring online retailers to collect sales tax. now it's cut the links between its site and the 10,000 businesses that had a click through amazon. the law requires any business that has a physical presence including an affiliate in california to charge sales tax. amazon says without affiliates here, it's exempt. mark welsh's business is one terminated by amazon. >> what i do know is i just lost 26% of my income. >> california hoped to collect $200 million in sales tax because of the change.

six other states have passed similar laws and amazon has dropped its associates in all of them except new york. that's where amazon filed a lawsuit claiming the tax is unconstitutional. your time now 5:35. governor jerry brown still has not signed the main budget bill here in california. the one passed by the legislature tuesday night. the governor's expected to sign the bill today. now the new fiscal year begins tomorrow and governor brown vetoed the first bill sent to him by lawmakers last week. but then he worked with democrats to come up with a revised version. and now we're hearing that lieutenant governor gavin newsom voluntarily gave up his salary to join in with state lawmakers who had to forfeit theirs until they came up with a balanced budget. newsom says he believes all elected officials should be held accountable. however the lieutenant governor probably didn't suffer too much financially from a couple of days of not getting paid. according to the san francisco chronicle, gavin newsom is the

wealthiest elected official in california. the labor department just released the very latest unemployment numbers. the newest report not as good as the economists had predicted. now coming up we'll see how the stock markets react in business news. pam will have that report for you at 5:50. redwood city is canceling its 4th of july fireworks show for the second year in a row. now it would cost about $65,000 to put on a fireworks display. and the city says it just doesn't have the money in these tough economic times. one redwood city family told us they piled into the car to go see fireworks last year, but they won't be doing that again. >> we tried to go to foster city one year and it was just traffic was terrible. everybody in the whole bay area i guess was heading to foster city and there was no space. >> but there will be an independence day parade and festival on monday. street closure signs went up last night. star of the show will be the redwood city fire department as it celebrates 150 years of service.

the festival starts at 9:00 a.m. the parade starts at 10:00 . time now 5:37. well, getting around the bay area is going to cost some people more money. beginning tomorrow tolls are going up on all the local bridges. on the eight state owned bridgelings cars pulling a trailer and three axle truck will be charged $10.50. those with five axles will pay $18. on the golden gate bridge three axle vehicles will be charged $13. commercial truckers will pay $22. car tolls, they will stay the same. now solo drivers of hybrid cars will have to move out of all car pool lanes on bridges and freeways. that means solo drivers will have to pay the full toll instead at that lower car pool fee. the yellow stickers expire at midnight. the white stickers for all electric vehicles will still be valid in all of the car pool lanes. and some public transit agencies are also raising their prices.

golden gate transit one way fares go up between 50 cents and a dollar. cal train will charge more for parking fees as well as fares. san francisco's muni fast passes will cost one or two dollars more a month. and cable car fares, pam, they're also going up a dollar. all right. 5:38 is the time. sal, how's traffic right now? you know it's doing pretty well. we are watching just a bunch of things out there and for the most part things have been quiet. let's go to the bay bridge upper deck traffic continues to move along very nicely into san francisco with no major problems. now there is a little bit of police activity near treasure island but so far this is not effected the regular morning commute. let's move to the bay bridge toll plaza. it's still light there as well. and if you are driving in san rafael along southbound 101 that traffic looks good from novato to central san rafael. now let's go to steve. all right, sal, thank you very much. we have some patchy low clouds. there goes our big system. again, we may not see one like

sunshine today. little bit warmer inland jump up about ten degrees coast and bay 60s, 70s. tomorrow even warmer. carry that right into what looks to be a nice warm to hot weekend. time now 5:44. her name is arlene and she is the first tropical storm of the season made land fall in mexico. it touched down this morning packing 65-mile an hour winds. arlene's expected to weaken later today then break up on friday. the main threat they say is from heavy rains that may cause flash floods and mud slides. here's a quick look at some of the other top stories we're following for you right now at 5:45. in just a couple of hours 68 san jose police officers will turn in their badges. they're losing their jobs, laid off, due to the city's growing budget crisis. the investigation continues into this deadly house fire in el cerrito last night. a 98-year-old woman from el salvador was killed. investigators say a burning candle may have started that fire.

and there are new reports this morning that phone calls were made from michelle le's cell phone after she disappeared. one call was to reno. another one was somewhere in arizona. police in hayward actually went to arizona. there's no word on whether they have any new leads. happening now in orlando, florida. the defense in the casey anthony trial is expected to rest its case today after calling its final witness. now we're looking at live pictures inside the courtroom right now. there's casey anthony. yesterday anthony's father broke down when telling jurors about his suicide attempt some six weeks after his granddaughter's body was found. he testified that he tried to take his own life because he believed he'd failed his granddaughter. prosecutors say casey anthony suffocated her daughter in 2008 with duct tape. the defense claims the girl drowned in the family pool. closing arguments could begin as early as saturday. a modest apartment could

soon become a very hot property in the rental market. it is the former santa monica home where suspected mob boss james whitety bulger hid from the f.b.i. for ten years. a line of would-be renters is already jostling to get a look at the apartment once occupied by america's most wanted criminal. real estate agents say they are ready to pay top dollar. the 81-year-old bulger is due back in court today to face 19 counts of murder and other charges. time now 5:47. well, britain's foreign secretary says the uk is sending body armor, uniforms and communications equipment to the rebels in libya. foreign secretary says britain is providing this equipment to allow the police to better protect rebel leaders. international officials and nonprofit groups based in rebel controlled areas. well, a judge has ordered a san jose city councilman to pay fines and complete community service in connection with a drunk driving case.

the mercury news reports the councilman pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor dui charge stemming from an arrest on may 7. he'll be on probation the next three years. he'll also have to pay $2,000 in fines and complete a week of community service. police in marin county are warning people to watch their bikes after a string of high end bike thefts. three bikes valued between $750 and $3300 have been stolen in fair fax since saturday. police say a fourth theft was averted when a good samaritan confronted a person trying to steal a bike. investigators believe the thefts are related and the thieves may be using bolt cutters to get the bikes. all right. time now a 48:00. it's early on a thursday morning. but sal still knows about our commute. sal. all right. and we do have traffic that's moving along pretty nicely across the san mateo bridge getting out to 101. looks like there's a stalled vehicle on the right side but now that they have the shoulder not a big deal. it used to be a while ago that

in the network, everyone can get along. welcome back to the morning news. it's now 5:55. bay area congresswoman jackie spear has introduced legislation to give same sex couples the right to share cobra health care benefits with their partners and their partners' children. cobra is a federal program that allows people to continue to purchase health insurance

through their employer's plan for up to 36 months after losing a job. but under current law the health care benefits can only be shared with a legal spouse or dependent. now lawmakers in rhode island have passed legislation to allow same sex civil unions. state senators approved that bill yesterday. legislation previously passed rhode island's lower house. the bill would allow gay couples to enter into civil unions that offer most of the same rights and benefits given to married couples. rhode island's governor said he will sign it. time now 5:56. the clock is ticking towards tonight's midnight deadline in the labor dispute that may threaten the nba season. negotiators for nba owners and players meet all day today in the final hours before their collective bargaining agreement runs out. right now they're far apart on profit sharing and other very critical issues. the owners could lock out the players for the first time since the nba season was cut to 50 games that was 13 years ago.
