where people camped out over night in order to get food for the holidays. i will tell you why the need is especially great this year. welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. we are taking you out live to antioch this morning. you are look at the scene of a crash that really sounds like quite a mystery at this point. investigators are trying to figure out what happened. we do see it involves that car and at least one person was killed in that crash. we will take you back out toth scene for more details. it is friday, november 8th thank you for waking up with us i'm pam cook. >> good morning, i'm dave clark. let's check weather and traffic for you. steve is right here. >> yes, it is. we have fog back. otherwise it will be a little cooler for some. we've lost the low cloud deck or high cloud deck from

yesterday. a lot more 40s than yesterday. it will be a little cooler and cooler on the high temps for coast and bay. san francisco 50 verses 57 yesterday. we'll go for a high of 62. watch out for that morning fog coast and bay. cooler inland under clerisies. cooler as well closer to the bay and hazy and warm away. in fact everything is staying to the north expect for that low cloud deck which is very low. fog, sun, hazy. but a warm pattern inland. no change there. we get a little bit more of a semi summer pattern. 50s and 60s to a few 70s. here is sal. we just heard of a crash that sounds very serious in san jose. so i want to alert joe who operates our camera if we can get to 280 san jose. we are hearing of a very serious crash involving a pedestrian that was hit on the freeway. same thing happened yesterday

in oakland. a very serious crash and we will see if we can get that for you. let's go and take a look at the maps now. this would be on 280 as i move the map. this would be on 280 right about 87. so it would be right around here. and i can put a line on it for you. northbound 280. it looks like there is already slow traffic in that area. let's take a look at live pictures. this is a look at the bay bridge. and that traffic is moving along pretty well. there are no major problems as you drive to the city. also we are looking at the san mateo bridge the traffic there is looking good. there are no major problems as you drive across. we will try to get that picture for you coming up soon. now back to the desk. time is 5:02. we have new details about the disappearance and death of a patient at san francisco general hospital. ktvu tara moriarty is joining us live at the hospital to tell us about some security shuffling going on out there. what is happening?

>> reporter: well, we have learned that one policy change that the sheriff has already made is that any time a patient from san francisco general hospital goes missing a full and thorough search of the campus will be done. we have also learned on november 22nd, three people am sergeant and two senior deputies will be transferred out of san francisco general. and the next day five people will come in. a lieutenant, two sergeants, and three senior deputies. a dispatcher connected to the spalding case has already been transferred. and these changes cam in the wake of the lynn spalding case. the woman being treated at sf general who's body was found in a stairwell. she went missing october 21st but it wasn't until nine days later that a search was done. and in a press conference theyed a will mitted only half of the stairwells were searched. deputies that provide security at the hospital didn'ted a first consider 57-year-old spalding to be a missing person. according to the deputies

attorney saling was close to being discharged. coming up we will tell you about security at the hospital. people who are not certified peace officers. live from san francisco i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. time is 5:03. a developing story in antioch. one person was killed. these are live pictures. look at these incredible pictures. suv crashed into a parked semi trailer. this is live. this happened right behind the antioch police station in the area of second street court. the roof of that vehicle completely sheered off from the impact of that crash. this happened at 2:15 this morning. police told us the victim was a 31-year-old man from antioch. we do not know his name. we don't know if alcohol was involved here. but again an active investigation happening right now. also students at a high

school in berkeley plan to show their support for a student who is the victim of a horrifying hate crime. 18-year-old senior sasha suffered serious burns after being set on fire while sleeping on an ac transit butt in oakland monday night. he was wearing a skirt at the time of the attack and today many of the 110 students at berkeley's maybeck high school will be wearing skirts or kilts to show their outrage. >> the whole thing is very crushing to all of us. >> i hope its a gesture that moves people and i think people obviously need to be aware. >> sasha's mom describes her son as being a gender who does not identify himself as either a male or a female. sasha flashman's high school has ties to that huge fire in the yosemite fire. the rim fire forced sasha and the entire school to evacuate

maybeck high summer camp. prosecutors have filed formal hate crime charges against the teenager. they all try 16-year-old richard thomas as an adult. he wrote that thomas set the boy on fire quote because he is homophobic. >> i didn't know it was going to be that bad. >> what kind of boy is he? >> he's a good kid. a very good kid. >> police arrested the teenage suspect a day after the attack. tomorrow a national day of action to protest last months fatal shooting in santa rosa. the controversial shooting sparked several protests in santa rosa where the teenager

was killed last month. tomorrow demonstrations are planned in cities around the country including in san francisco, oakland, and sacramento. october 22nd a sheriffs deputy shot and killed the 13-year-old boy. lopez was holding a toy gun. it looked like a real assault weapon. the sheriffs deputy says he refused orders to drop it. new reports of growing evidence against randy alana. the man accused of killing oakland federal investigator sandra coke over the summer. a man in the jail at the same time that alana was an inmate claims that alana wrote a jailhouse letter and boasted that 48 hours had passed and police still had not solved the sandra coke disappearance case. sandra coke's body was eventually found in the back of a park in august. happening now thousands of families in the south bay are

lining up -- registration for the sacred heart program starts in a few hours. >> reporter: the first person arrived yesterday afternoon at 3:30 and people have camped out over night. while the economy is improving they still expect to serve just as many people as last year. we spoke with a woman who has been in line since 3:30 this morning. she is helping to feed her large extended family. >> it helps a lot. we have -- my immediate family is small but i have one more extended family. and whatever we get here we use

and child abduction. an amber alert was issued tuesday. police in hayward want your help to try to find a missing man who suffers from diabetes and dementia. 77-year-old edward moore was last seen at his home on sequoia road. he takes medication and also gets short of breath very easily. he was last seen wearing a green shirt and camouflage shorts. he also by the way has a tattoo on his forearm. the chp is investigating a crash that injured a novato police officer. it happened at 1:15 yesterday afternoon on redwood boulevard just south of san marin drive. officer andrew was on his motorcycle when a car changed lanes and knocked him off his bike. he was not seriously hurt. investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol were a factor in that crash. tomorrow families that lost loved ones on the old eastern

the white house budget office says the two-week government shut down cost taxpayers $2 billion in lost productivity. last month's 16-day shut down disrupted businesses at all

agencies. budget analysts estimate $500 million were lost partially due to a lack of tourism, business fees, slowed home buying, and delayed safety inspections. 850,000 government employees were ordered to shut down because of the shut down. a separate report shows another stalemate slashed -- the sequesters automatic spending cuts eliminated nine staff positions. the west costa contra unified school district also lost more than $1.5 million for programs which included adult education classes. a popular activity that was postponed by the partial shut down will take place tomorrow in san francisco. the sand castle contest has been held for decades but the contest was delayed because san francisco ocean beach is part of the recreation area where

workers were furloughed. the sand castle contest hits elementary schools and last year raised $.25 million for the school. future baseball stars are benefiting from the success of the world champs the san francisco giants. the giants are paying to make major improvements to popular youth fields. both of those ballparks will get a $40,000 makeover. now we know when the next chapter of the star wars saga will be in movie theaters. episode seven will premier the week before christmas 2015. disney says it will give its creative team to develop a sensational picture. new film is being written by jj abrams who was great. and he is also directing episode seven. disney purchased lucas film including the star wars

the traffic here on the bay bridge is okay. let's bring steve in. >> that is correct coast and bay we do have very thick fog. in fact its very, very low. pockets will be clear and then wham. you can see how low it is. super typhoon for yolanda slammed about 4:30 a.m. local time. the strongest typhoon ever. 195 miles an hour winds gust at 225. look at the bands wrapping back in. i know there is some on youtube. i've seen some damage videos on youtube. when it goes over land some of the higher elevations it might regenerate a little bit. just the strongest ever super typhoon tip. a lot of high clouds yesterday

they are gone. we get the low clouds now and they will play into a cooler forecast. rain up in the pacific northwest. not here. it looks like the storm track will stay to the north. unfortunately we can use some rain. 37 novato. napa 39. we lose those higher clouds. so a lot cooler on the lows. 30s for some. 40s for others. 50 if we get a little bit of that low cloud deck. we will have sunshine inland. the next system will deepen out in the pacific but at the same time its like a teeter totter effect. if anything i'm in maybe next tuesday. again we have a couple days to deal with it. the weekend will be fine. slightly cooler. rain next week. this is a computer enhance showing you where the rain night go. everything is fine through sunday and monday. we are on the talented of that.

a very, very bad crash still being investigated right behind the police station there. we will have a live report of all the details and all the implications of this investigation in a couple moments. it is friday morning a brand new day november 8th i'm dave clark. >> good morning, i'm pam cook. time is 5:30. let's check in with steve paulson. it is definitely foggy out there. >> that is correct. dave looking very sharp. >> much obliged. >> we have some fog. especially on the bay bridge and around oakland we are getting about half a mile visibility or even less. lows are inland are much, much cooler. even by the coast and bay low 50s verses mid to upper 50s. it will be a -- so 62 for a high today in san francisco. but inland temps won't have any problems warming up. fog, coast, and bay. and hazy and warm away.

yet temperatures by the coast they will be back in the 50s and 60s. high pressure still wins out even though it will be gradual cooling into the weekend. fog, sun, hazy. some mid 70s again. probably for one more day. although if you get closer for waters edge you will see cooler conditions. here is sal. we do have a very serious crash in san jose. its a fatal collision involving pedestrian that was on the road northbound 280 on southbound 87. this is a second morning where we started off with the pedestrian crash. and now chp has shut down the ramp from northbound 280 to both northbound and southbound 87. very foggy in the area as well. we have a camera there but we can't see a thing because its so foggy. let's move along and take a look at the commute on 237. just out of our camera view there is a noninjury crash in the left lane that chp is clearing. its causing a little bit of a slow down. a couple taps on the breaks there as you can see.

also we do have the fatal collision in antioch that happened earlier this morning where this suv ran into the trailer part of a tractor trailer. these are the container trailers that you see on ships and this is an investigation that is going on. this is right near the antioch police department in a yard that has these trailers parked there. we'll have a little bit more about this coming up later on. let's go back to the desk. new details now about the disappearance and death of a patient at san francisco general hospital. ktvu channel 2 reporter tara moriarty is joining us now this morning with the major security changes happening later this month. tara. >> reporter: we have learned a sergeant and two senior deputies are going to be transferred out of san francisco general hospital in two weeks and six people will be transferred in. we have also learned a dispatcher has already been transferred out. these changes come in the wake of the lynn spalding case.

ament who who was -- a woman who was being treated at sf general who's body was found in a stairwell. she went missing september 21st but it wasn't until nine days later that her body was found. someone did call to report a missing body in the stairwell the morning of october 4th. according to the deputies attorneys spalding was close to being discharged and deputies did not consider her at risk. one policy change the sheriff has implemented is that any time a patient here goes missing, a full search of the campus will be done. also security duties at the hospital. they are carried out by civilians. call ipo's. they were originally private security hired by the hospital who were over seen by the police department. but when the sheriffs department took over the hospital, we're told that some of those ipo's could not pass the background check but they did sign a contract making them

quote untouchable. meaning they can't be fired. its unclear what role if any they played in the spalding case. live in san francisco i'm tara moriarty. we have new information about reports of a sexual assault. source is telling ktvu news the alleged victim is a member of the lgbt community and its being investigated as a possible hate crime. the 19-year-old student says she was raped in the first floor restroom. the campus police called the attack an isolated incident. they identified the attacker as an 18-20-year-old male student. the two were acquaintances but not friends and never had a relationship. >> it makes me feel a little weird. like i sometimes have to fear it could happen to me too. >> campus police say they know who they are looking for but so far no arrests have been made.

police in san mateo need your help to try to identify a man they say assaulted a teenage girl as she walked to school. he approached the 16-year-old girl in the area of 31st avenue wednesday morning. the man described as filipino in his 30s clean shaven with dark spikey hair. police say he was driving a white honda crv or a similar car. new this morning in the philippines one of the most powerful typhoons ever recorded made landfall this morning. the category five is being called a super typhoon. it has triggered landslides, damaged homes, and knocked out power lines. communication has been cut off so the full extent of damage is not known at this point. about 720,000 people have evacuated their homes. the typhoon same area where an earthquake killed more than 200 people last month. >> our concern is mainly in the

earthquake effected areas. there was 57.1 magnitude earthquake in mid october that theft 350,000 people displaced. >> tomorrow that typhoon is expected to make its way to the south china sea and head toward vietnam. new workers safety rules could mean shorter hours for bart. bart managers made that surprising revelation yesterday during a special hearing in san francisco. they say the recently adopted safety rules for crews working on the bart tracks could lead to big changes in service. and they would not rule out the possibility bart could cut its operating hours. the new rules come just weeks after the deaths of two track inspectors former santa clara county supervisor george shirakawa will be sentenced today. he is also accused of creating

a fake campaign mailer to discredit a candidate running for san jose city council in 2010. the district attorney wants him to serve a year in jail. the san jose police department says many crimes are going unsolved because of a staffing shortage. the department has been losing officers at an alarming rate. there were 1400 officers in 2009. now there are about 900. place say there are not enough investigators to staff special units and crimes such as burglaries and auto thefts are going unsolved. >> without a doubt for practical reality those crimes are going unchecked. and uninvestigated. >> police say they would need to add at least 200 new officers to restore the special unit. happening now the 29th annual symposium on mental health policy in atlanta. live pictures. this is health and human

their plan if they liked it. >> i am sorry that they are finding themselves in this situation based on assurances they got from me. we have to work hard no be make sure that they know we hear them. >> now if the president says consumers forced to change their plans. we will end up with better policies and may get subsidies to offset any higher costs. a deadly pedestrian crash has shut down the northbound 280 connector ramp in san jose. katie utehs has arrived on the scene. sal has been talking about this. >> reporter: traffic is backed up. you can see down on the onramp the highway patrol suv and the two patrol cars the body lies in the middle of the roadway behind that middle patrol car. so the body is between in the

center of the two lanes on the southbound 87. now it is causing quite a bit of backup as this busy morning commute is under way. you can see if we pan this direction the cars that have to be diverted chp has blocked the read. i'm told this fatal collision involving a pedestrian happened a little before 5:00. we are told the coroner has been called to the scene and a public information officer with the highway patrol is also on the way. so we are working to confirm some details. but at this point we do know a pedestrian struck and killed still working to learn the identity of that person if it was a manhour woman-- man or woman. live in san jose katie utehs ktvu channel 2 news. protecting riders on the streets and the rails.

welcome back. time is 5:44. a connecticut prosecutor wants the block of 911 calls from

last years sandy hook elementary school rampage. in september the freedom of information commission ruled that the recordings from inside the school must be given to the associated press. they wanted to examine police response to the shooting massacre. at 9:20 this morning our time security screening at airports all over the nation will pause to honor the tsa officer who was killed last friday at lax. 9:20 was when hernandez a 39- year-old father of two was shot to death. he became the first tsa officer killed in the line of duty. hundreds of airports will hold am moment of silence today. a public memorial will also be held next tuesday in los angeles. the alleged gunman is facing a charge of murder. fema has denied continued help for the recovery of the massive rim fire at the yosemite national park. now they will be forced to rebuild roads and other damaged

infrastructure with only state and local resources. in a letter to the government fema said their damage to the county was not enough to require federal aid. that fire burned 257,000 acres and destroyed several structures. san jose state president has backed off from a plan that could cut classes. they were told just days from registration they would need to cut tens of thousands of dollars to stay within their budget. but yesterday the school's president released a statement saying the campus will use a one-time fund that was supposed to go toward infrastructure and other projects to make up the difference. the cardinals defeated the ducks last night. the fifth ranked cardinals made it two in a row against the number two ducks at home last

bay. westbound 24 as you head up to the tunnel. its getting busier on the way to lafayette. bay bridge toll plaza we are seeing more people show up. its pretty foggy in some areas. we are all over the fog because it tends to move around and a lot of drivers have been saying boy, its really low. kind of thick. could be hard to see. leave the house early if you -- just because you might run into that. we are still following up on that fatal crash. northbound 280 this happened just before 5:00 and this is is going to be a lengthy investigation here. you should avoid taking 87 from 280 this morning until further notice. at 5:48 let's go to steve. thank you, sal. let's take a look at super typhoon yolanda. 4:30 a.m. local time is when it moved on shore. eastern central philippines. it was still pack 170 miles an hour sustained winds. gusts to 225.

one of the strongest storms in recorded history. we lost a lot of communication. youtube there is some video out there on that. the track will take it into the south china sea. it looses a little umph but it is still amazingly strong. it was south of manila but the information coming in has been trickling in here. and its not done yet as it goes into the south china sea. it will take aim at central vietnam. this is an amazingly strong typhoon. another name for a hurricane. we to have fog back for us locally. that is it. that will be the only fly in the ointment. rain up into the pacific northwest.

unless you are up toward fort bragg, 30s and 40s and 50s. but these are much cooler than what we had yesterday. some of that fog is pretty thick. thick as thieves there. 34 up in tahoe. 43 sacramento. cooler coast and bay because of the addition of that nothing. again its very shallow. around oakland and bay bridge we see reduced visibility. everything stays to the north. it will still be warm inland. fog, sun hazy skies. a few 70s. by the waters edge you will see more 50s and 60s. 75 fairfield. 76 brentwood and oakley. oakland 65. so coming down with that fog 70s for san jose. morgan hill and gilroy. everyone is pretty close here. 50s and 60s on the coast.

sal parts of the peninsula upper 60s or very, very low 70s. a few minutes ago the government announced u.s. employers added 204,000 new jobs. the unemployment rate though rose a bit to 7.3% from 7.2%. as furloughed workers were counted as unemployed. tesla stock continues to slide this morning. it fell another 7.5% yesterday. that was after federal investigators announced they are looking into another model s sedan fire. the fire started when the car ran into a piece of debris on the road. tesla stock has dropped nearly 21% since tuesday. it is down again this morning

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. eyes up, phone down. that is the message the bay area city is sending out to those riding buses and trains. the campaign aims to stop cell phone thefts. two out of three robberies in the city involve am smart phone. transit officials are handing out a warning to muni riders after september's killing on a muni train has prompted more to be on alert.

>> there were people on the train engrossed in their cell phones they didn't see what happened. >> extra officers have been riding for several weeks. police say it has already prompted an 83% drop in transit robbery. time is 5:55. ac transit is rolling out new buses for services in and around and out of san francisco. 54 new coach buses like these have been purchased. the first 16 start running today. these buses you are looking at they are built locally. they have free wi-fi and luggage racks and high seat backs and individual reading lamps. some former donors to an animal rescue group in contra costa county are raising questions about the charity status. last chance critter rescue their facebook page has more than 87,000 likes. however the organization is not
