>> we are tracking the latest storm that is creating a very wet and messy commute this morning across the bay area. we will show you where the heaviest rain is falling right now and how long it will stick around. plus, uc berkeley officials are defending how they handled a protest that ended with violence. the approach that police officers took to the crowds and how much it will cost to clean up all of the damage left behind. this is ktvu mornings on 2 >> 7:00. we made it to friday. >> yes. >> it is super bowl friday ahead of super bowl sunday. we get to sit in front of the tv and watch snacks and watch commercials. if it is raining this sunday, that's okay with me. rain for the morning commute is the concern today. steve and sal have been very busy. i'm gasia mikaelian. >> and good morning.
7:01 am
i'm dave clark. we're going to talk about this right now. it stopped raining outside of our door. at least for now. >> it was the worst of it what i was coming into oakland. >> you had a lot of company. coming down hard. we saw this part of it go through. still some rain out there. the worst is over. now we will focus our attention on what could be afternoon thunderstorm activity. a little bit up in the north bay. american canyon, hercules and out to crockett and over the we benecia bridge. there was a cell that went through there. still picking up for some south of palo alto, sunnyvale, into san jose and the santa clara valley. an intense line just went down 101. things are letting up in the santa cruz mountains. that is good. we are getting a break. everything coming in from the west/southwest. 50s on the temps.
7:02 am
the breeze will be there but not as windy as when the front came through. the low is moving but it will provide instability that mighty call thunderstorms later -- might cause thunderstorms later today. >> this commute had been very slow and then we had a lot of accidents, a lot of standing water. too many individual crashes for me to mention. i will say that things are slow all over the place. let's start off with the bay bridge. you can see the only lanes moving through are the carpool lanes. it's a little better. it is not raining there right now. that also has -- it has been raining there before. that made it very slow. right now it looks more like a normal commute. we're also looking at some of the commutes on 880 northbound and southbound. it has been tough getting into downtown oakland. it is windy and breezy, as
7:03 am
steve said. 580 and 880 are both affected by crashes right now into oakland that are clearing. it will be extra slow. as we move over to marin county, southbound 101 is still slow from novato down to san rafael because of earlier crashes. on the peninsula, especially in san francisco, san francisco is a mess. a lot of standing water, a couple of fender benders trying to get to the airport. if you're on 101 or 280, give yourself extra time. and the san mateo bridge is also pretty slow. likewise for the dumbarton bridge heading over to the peninsula. >> thank you, sal. new this morning, president trump is speaking out on social media again about protesters across the country. it appears right here at home at uc berkeley against its administration and conservative politics. he said, quote, professional paid protesters are proving the point of the millions of people who voted to make america great again. in the meantime uc berkeley
7:04 am
administrators are defending how they handled the demonstration. they are being criticized from not doing enough to let the protests get out of hand. we're also getting the first damage estimates this morning. alex. >> reporter: good morning. school officials estimate it will cost about 1 hub thousand dollars to repair call -- $100,000 to repair the damage that was done on the campus. windows boarded up on the campus. this was the focus of the demonstration. protesters smashed out a lot of the windows wednesday night. a large crowd was voicing opposition to a planned speech by milo yiannopoulos. but uc berkeley officials say it was a group of 150 who set fires and broke windows. now, extra officers had been called in. they took a hands-off approach that night. the event put on by the berkeley republicans was eventually canceled. six people were hurt during the arrest and just one arrest.
7:05 am
>> reporter: and there are now stories of heroism emerging from that chaotic night. jake shields an mma fighter happened to be near the cal campus that night getting dinner with his girlfriend. shields says he saw a group of about 15 or so people wearing masks who were hitting a man with sticks. so he says he stepped in and fought them off. hem off. >> and all of a sudden i see a man getting chased about i a mob of 15, 20 people hitting them with sticks. he had already been beat up. i started fighting the people off. i hit a few of them. they started standing down. >> reporter: shields said he ultimately pulled the victim into a nearby deli and tried to get help from police.
7:06 am
but he claims that officers refused to go near the crowd of protesters. berkeley police representative that we talked with says he wasn't aware of that particular situation but officers in general would step in if they witnessed a violent attack. but overall, police in berkeley and here at the university they say they were focused on protecting life over property. in downtown berkeley, a lot of businesses were vandalized and a lot of damage done on the uc berkeley campus. school officials estimate, again, that the damage done was about $100,000 worth of damage. and they're going to continue to do the clean-up here. again, gasia, they are defending the way they handled the demonstrations, the hands- off approach they took. they were expecting large crowds. they were expecting push-back to the milo yiannopoulos speech here but what they witnessed with that outside group sort of taking over the protest was something unprecedented. >> alex, i know we have the mayor of berkeley joining us tonight on the #. we will follow up on that.
